Overview

Our take on the Panasonic CQ-DP171U

Panasonic makes it easy for you internet music fans out there — the CQ-DP171U plays the MP3 files that you've recorded on CD-Rs and CD-RWs. Since you can record up to ten hours of your favorite files on a single disc, it's like having a CD changer in your dash.

Panasonic makes it easy for you internet music fans out there — the CQ-DP171U plays the MP3 files that you've recorded on CD-Rs and CD-RWs. Since you can record up to ten hours of your favorite files on a single disc, it's like having a CD changer in your dash.

A powerful built-in amp (23 watts RMS/45 peak x 4) reproduces your tunes with authority, and a set of preamp outputs simplifies adding an outboard amp and subwoofer for even more low-end punch. For greater flexibility, the CQ-DP171U will control a Panasonic CD changer — add one to your receiver order, and save $$ with Crutchfield's package discount. A wireless remote control is included.

Features

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files that have been recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using any of the following formats: ISO 9660 Level 1, ISO 9660 Level 2, Joliet, Romeo, and Apple Extension to ISO 9660. The files can be recorded with fixed bit rate or variable bit rate compression. The CQ-DP171U is compatible with bit rates from 16kbps to 256kbps. ID3 tags are not supported, but the file names can be displayed. Each recorded disc can have a maximum of 8 trees and 254 files/folders. The following functions are available during MP3 playback:

  • Folder Skip (forward and backward)
  • File Skip (forward and backward)
  • Audible File Search (forward/reverse)
  • Direct Folder Selection: using the supplied remote control, you can directly access folders
  • File Random Play: allows you to play the files in all the folders in random order
  • Folder Random Play: allows you to play the files in the current folder in random order
  • File Scan Play: plays the first 10 seconds of each file in all the folders
  • Folder Scan Play: plays the first 10 seconds of the first file in each folder

  • Folder Repeat Play: allows you to repeat the current folder

Multi-Stage Noise Shaping: This technology helps prevent zero-cross distortion and non-linear distortion. It requantizes the CD data, "shaping" it to move digital noise out of the audible range. Pulse width modulation (PWM) then reconstructs the analog waveform with true precision.

Anti-Shock Floating Mechanism: To help assure high signal reading accuracy, the optical deck of this unit is mounted on the chassis via three silicone/rubber dampers, creating a floating suspension. Panasonic uses a side-mounting system to resist horizontal as well as vertical vibrations.

1-Bit 4-DAC System: This unit uses four 1-bit digital-to-analog converters.

Alphatuner V: The tuner is designed to help suppress multi-path distortion and reduce the problem of radio signal reflections in metropolitan areas. It also features increased sensitivity for weak signal areas.

Direct Track Selection: Using the supplied remote control, you can directly access tracks.

Anti-Volume Blast Circuit: When the power is switched off and on again, the volume slowly rises to the previous level. The anti-volume blast circuit will not work when the volume level is set lower than position 20 on the display.

When the clock has not been given display priority, pressing and holding the Source button turns the unit off completely.
