Best in Class, Then some!!

After many hours of research, on Dual, Pro-Ject, Audio-Technica, Denon, etc. I decided to go to the store in Charlottesville to get hands on. I really liked the idea of direct drive, so the Dual & Technics had a leg up. Once I actually got my hands on one & could see how heavy / well-built it is (The patter is massive!!) So.... I went with the SL-1500C. All I can say is..... WOW! From how well it is packaged, to ease of use & everything in between. Comes with the 2M Red cart & I ran it for a couple of months but I had the Sumiko Pearl I had upgraded on my last turntable & it sounds even better. (if that was possible). I upgrade to the Sumiko Moonstone & now it's stellar. (Almost a year in) I can't imagine any turntable sounds better than this, at any price. The staff at the store & on the phone while I did my research could not have been easier to deal with, you can tell they enjoy what they do & where they work. Once again, Crutchfield has outdone themselves. Just when you think they couldn't do better, they do!!

Nice.

Beautiful looking, great sounding turntable. I'll probably replace the Ortofon Red with a moving coil cartridge in the near future, but this is a very nice turntable out of the box. Love the auto pickup. Typical Technics build quality and impeccable finish. Highly recommended.

Technics SL-1500C

A definite upgrade from my excellent 7 project debut carbon which I've loved for 7 years. There's simply so much more going on with this turntable. From the quality feel, the effortless sound and the micro dynamics will astound you. This turntable's noise floor is super quiet. So quiet I had to double check I was on the right input. Massive build quality meets massive sound quality. I loved my previous turntable and now I'm astounded and love this one as well. And in the new white color, and wow it's clean sharp and looks the part. I previously used an orthofon blue on my debut, and the red on this 1500 is just perfection. I have not tried the phono amp built in. But the phone out on this is simply pristine. Highly, highly recommended. I just wish this was out seven years ago as I could've been listening to records this good all this time.

Exceptional Turntable

I did not get into Vinyl until my mid Fifties. My teenage son wanted to try records and after a lot of research I purchased a Fluance R85N with a Nagaoka MP-110 Cartridge for him. This excellent set up led me to the realization I wanted something for myself and I eventually decided either on a Technics SL-1500C or a Technics SL-1210. Both are exceptional tables but the clean looks of the SL-1500C coupled with the Auto-Lift and built in Phono preamp for additional component flexibility led me to choose this model. Crutchfield was out of stock for a long time and when they finally had them available I had the opportunity for a new color option as well. I elected to go with the white which is subtle, clean and a slight departure from the traditional black or silver options. Excellent looking table and the playback is flawless. The table build quality is amazing and as I put it together I was continually noticing that I was happy about the choice I had made. The final adjustments were slightly more complicated than I was expecting and the instructions were adequate but not absolutely perfect for me.I took my time, figured it out and was soon spinning Vinyl. If you are considering this table I would definitely recommend it. I am not sure if worth over twice the price of the Fluance R85N but I can say that I am happy with every aspect of it and strongly recommend it.

Technics SL-1500C

I'm very satisfied with my purchase of the 1500-C. Set-up was pretty easy, and only took 20 - 30 minutes from opening the box to making music. My records sound really good on it, though like others have mentioned, I'll likely upgrade the stylus to the 2M Blue at some point. And that's all that it is by the way, the cartridge stays the same, you just change out the stylus. The SL 1500-C is replacing my SL 1400 that I bought back in the 70's. Technics are built to last! At this rate I shouldn't have to replace this one until I am about 120 years old.

This is a fantastic turntable, well worth the price. Easy to set up, and has high fidelity. It also doesn't hurt that the unit is an understated work of art with its domed dust cover, so is on full display in my sound room. My albums have never sounded better!

Not serious audio-philio-ish

I bought the 1500c and it nice with 'end of record' lift-up-okay-cartridge-easy to use in one package. The on-board pre-amp is good by on-board pre-amps go, but not near as good external pre-amp (even a cheap one). I tried a couple external pre-amps but on my 1500c the "phono out" was super noisy (yes grounded) so it was returned. Also plinth is not dampened very much. Bought the sl-1210gr and wow much better for all noted above.

Your daily driver

For daily use, this turntable is a dream. Paired this with the Cambridge Audio CXA81. The built-in phono pre-amp is as good as I read in reviews, so I won't be adding an outboard pre-amp to my setup. I picked this turntable for the pre-amp, the auto-lift, and how adjustable it is. My previous turntable in the $300-$400 was not very adjustable. You could set the tracking weight, but that was about it. The anti-skate worked poorly. The feet weren't adjustable. This Technics on the other hand tracks records wonderfully. Out of the box I adjusted the feet to level the turntable, adjusted the tonearm to the specifications of the factory cartridge, and it was off to the races. I like the auto-lift function, though I know some advise shutting it out. What I don't see mentioned in a lot of places is that the auto-lift is adjustable! Technics SL-1500C

This a great sounding turntable. It seems much more precise and focused than others I have listened to (at least in this price range). And the auto-lift function at the end of the record is most welcome. I was pleasantly surprised, too, by the included Ortofon Red cartridge. At some point I suspect I'll upgrade to the compatible 'Blue' stylus. But for now the 'Red' is just fine. I haven't tried the turn-table's built-in pre-amp yet. (I am using a Marantz integrated amplifier.) But it's nice to know it's there if needed. My only complaint is with the confusing Technics manual. It made installation and set-up more difficult than it needed to be.

Technics SL-1500C

Upgrade from a previous purchase here at Crutchfield. Easy assembly and setup. The adjustable feet are a great feature and functional. I found the factory VTA for the included Ortofon Red cartridge to be a bit off , the VTA is adjustable so it was easily adjusted to the specs in the manual. I would suggest to anyone that you complete a thorough setup. After setup everything is working as it should. Another nice feature is the "auto arm lift" at the end of the LP. The platter still rotates, and the feature does take a few rotations to activate, but if for whatever reason the unit was left unattended it would be much better for the stylus. Channel separation and soundstage are great, and after a few hours it is apparent that the stylus does sound better overall than when new, I do not know technically why this occurs, but in my case it is obvious. No complaints so far and a definite upgrade from my previous model.

Awesome build and phenonemal sound!

Playing Peter Gabriel's The Rhythm of the Heat. Bringing down the house. The Beatles 2018 White Album and Abbey Road. Beautiful. Also had to play Stairway to Heaven. Crystal clear. Plenty of bass and highs. More bass than I'm accustomed to from Vinyl. Paired it all up with a Rotel MKII (thanks to Tom at Crutchfield) and a pair of KLH Model 5's. Extremely nice pairing for authentic vinyl reproduction. Everything sounds loud and clear, no hum or fuzz when playing vinyl through the Rotel's phono amp. The built-in phono amp on the Technics is not as good as my Rotel. Output seems half. This turntable has gold-plated connectors and according to the us.technics website (https://us.technics.com/products/direct-drive-turntable-system-sl-1500c-k) lots of separation in the components to reduce noise. This is an excellent pairing for my needs. I do not know if I will use the auto lift feature. But nice just in case. Highly recommend this turntable in this price range. Extremely rigid and heavy build. I looked at a few other turntables in this price range and sure, you can get a Rega Planar 3, very cool, but I just felt that it was too fine and delicate for my setup. Plus I decided I didn't want a belt drive. I guess I'm not a purist. I wanted something beefy and this is a beast with refinement. Super quiet and beautiful, matte-black version. Highly recommend it.

Finally Upgraded

Purchased the Technics SL-1500C to upgrade from a Dual CS 505-1 with a Dual TKS 52 E cartridge (by Ortofon) bought new in 1981. The Technics is much heavier, more stable, more adjustable (leveling and Tone Arm height), with improved speed control and sound. The new Ortofon 2M Red cartridge does not require as much volume control to produce the same sound as the older cartridge utilizing the PHONO output terminals straight into my PHONO input equipped receiver. Next step is to purchase the 2M Blue stylus to see which I prefer. The tone arm Auto Lift Function is handy but you may have to turn it off for those records where they tried to fill every inch of vinyl available with music. Some times it will lift before the song is over on those.

I bought this TT as a compliment to my Pro-Ject Carbon Debut belt drive. The Technics is quite impressive: massive, solidly built, great tonearm, adjustable feet, and very well built. It sounded terrific and I was excited. But there was a hitch: It wouldn't track the last song on 50% of the records I played - and the same songs would track without a hitch on the belt drive TT. I setup the Technics three times to make sure I didn't make a mistake but the issue wouldn't go away. Guess I just wasn't lucky on this one, so I returned it opting out of having a direct replacement. I ended up getting another belt drive TT instead, a Dual CS 518 with an Ortofon 2M Blue stylus upgrade.

Where the heck is the storage for 45 adaptor?

No where to store the 45 adaptor. Owning this turn table is like owning a beautiful Porche that does not have a coffee cup holder. And I use 33 1/3, 45, and 78 platters.

great turntable

I'm very pleased with this turntable. I see no indication of platter wobble that a few other reviews have mentioned. The tonearm is one of the more difficult to balance that I've used, but not a big deal. This product meets and exceeds all my expectations. It is a substantial unit and sounds great.

One great turntable!

A really great truntable! I am gad I spent the extra $$ to get this one. The sound is truly amazing on new and old vinyl. This is said even paired up to a vintage receiver and a newer one as well. This does need to be set up properly. It is not plug and play. With that said, it is not difficult to do. This video link will guide you through the entire process. Great Turntable for the price

The turntable feels solidly built, I love the looks of it. Very easy to set up. Screw in the headshell with the 2M Red cartridge pre-installed and set the stylus downforce. If you read the instructions you just spent 15 minutes or so setting up. No platter wobble that other reviewers mentioned. The cueing lever takes a bit to get used to. The tonearm will drop will drop quickly when lowering the arm. This isn't a problem, I just expected a more damped feel to cueing. My one complaint with the turntable is the auto lift function. I have a few albums where it will lift the tonearm prematurely before the album has finished. Secondly when it does work properly it can take 30 seconds or so for the tonearm to lift once the end of the run out groove has been reached...too long a time in my opinion. I turned the auto lift function off. I have the turntable connected to a SCHIIT Audio Mani phono pre-amp. It sound great. The 2M Red is a good phono cartridge. I already own a 2M Red cartridge and I upgraded the stylus to a 2M Blue while ago. I swapped the 2M Red stylus for the 2M Blue stylus on the SL-1500C and the sound improvement is amazing. There is a world of difference between the two and it is well worth the money to upgrade to the 2M Blue stylus. I rated this 4 stars...if the auto lift function worked better it would have been 5 stars. Great turntable for the price.

Purchased to replace an old Technics table SLQ30. Included cartridge produces nice sound. Seems to be the same sound quality as prior turntable, tried the sound stage from the turntable and my integrated Marantz 30 amp I believe the amp sound was a little better. Overall I am pleased with the 1500 and it should be a good investment for many more years!

Crutchfield staff could have been way more helpful in that I wanted to explore upgrading the cart and was discouraged. When having issues setting up, the response was we can do a return or a refund. Zero technical support and it should be the exact opposite.

Nice turntable, good for my needs, not perfect

Nice turntable. Preamp sounds great and the turntable looks nice in the living room. A few minor issues, in order of how much I care: (1) tone arm lift is not sturdy or responsive to touch the way it should be; feels cheap, (2) auto-lift function is not accurate or reliable with all records and for at least two records has stopped early before reaching the end, which is annoying, (3) the platter has a very slight vertical wobble that is noticeable to the eye -- this does not seem to be affecting playback but it irritates me that I saw it immediately, (4) poor isolation, and (5) the stock Orton 2M red cartridge does not allow the turntable to live up to its full potential. At least issues (4) and (5) are readily curable. Overall I am happy with the purchase and it will suit my needs. It sounds great, but feels much cheaper than I expected, which is the reason this gets just 3/5 stars. Crutchfield tech support gets 5/5 stars for excellent support during set up.

Disappointed.QC lacking

This former Technics fanboy is disappointed. Returned due to wobbly platter. I've read here and other places where folks were reporting wobble and being told that 'a certain amount of wobble is still within spec. I'm here to say that if you spend this much on a table.you should expect NO visible wobble.especially wobble visible from across the room! This is Technics!, A Japanese company who was able to manufacture these to shockingly goodtolerances 50 years ago!!! (Or, are all bets off now that they are outsourcing this and other tables manufacture to Malaysia?) Re. The rest of the table..I liked it.if it did not wobble, drop the cart and built-in phono.and (IMO) you've got a very decent $800 turntable..that's all. That DD motor system is awesome though..and I know it's not likely.but I'd love Technics to license that out to other manufacturers. I am no longer interested in the new 1200mk7s either as I suspect sloppy tolerances. I will consider a GR or G down the line.but only after visually confirming no wobble. My kingdom for a quality Semiauto Technics without the dj stuff. This is not it. Crutchfield made the process about as easy as possible though. I'm going to assume they didn't knowingly sell me a 'scratch and dent' with an (across the room-grade) wobbly platter.

Perfect for Me

I bought this to replace my forty-something year old Technics SL5200 when iys speed controller went bad and started spinning the platter at about 100 RPM. I figured if I could get 40 years out of this one it would be enough. I am impressed with everything about the 1500C. The speed control, on/off, and start/stop buttons have a great positive feel. It stops and starts almost immediately. There are no DJ controls, strobes, or lights buttons; so the plinth has a clean look, without extra gee-haws. Everything about is feels well made and well thought out. And I like that the tone arm lifts at the end of the record. I selected the 1500 rather than one of its big sisters in part because I wanted the built in phono preamp. But after I bought it, I decided to change amps and went from an AV without a phono input to the new Marantz 400n. I did the Ortofon Blue for Red stylus swap and I can tell the difference. It would be nice if Crutchfield offered that as a purchase option.

Really nice

I've been using a 1976 Dual CS604 for the past few years. A nice vintage turntable. But as it was developing a few, persisting "old age" issues, decided it was time for an upgrade. I don't consider myself an audiophile or even a serious vinyl collector, so shelling $1,200 for a turntable was not an easy decision. The Technics arrived promptly, looks lovely and putting it together was relatively straight forward. But I did find the weight of the tonearm had to be set higher than recommended to play properly. Also, the auto lift up sometimes lifts the arm BEFORE the record is done. But, how does it sound, you ask?? Well, great question! Although it's sounding better and better every passing day, with bright and vivid soundstage, good highs and nice clean bass, my 57 year old ears can't discern too much difference between the shiny new Technics and the old Dual with Grado stylus. I think given the price it should have come with the Ortofon BLUE for a more refined experience. I will no doubt upgrade at some point. For now though, this will do just fine! And Crutchfield customer service is simply excellent.

As advertised. Good quality, although I chose to use an Audio Technica cartridge over the supplied one that I did not try. The one con I can think of is that the connections are way under the back of the unit. Difficult to connect prior to setup. Impossible to access after setup.

Even better than I hoped for. I bought my first turntable in 1971 and this is just my fourth. It replaces a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon that has served me well for the last 5 years. By comparison the SL-1500C sounds fuller and more precise. It's also much quieter as the stylus drops into that first groove with no audible motor hum coming through. I have not yet tried the built in phono pre-amp, instead using the phono stage in my Pioneer SC-LX704. The controls all work nicely and I'm pleasantly surprised that the cue lever works smoothly and has damping as the arm drops. Some reviews have criticized this. The auto lift-up function works but I have already found it lifts the arm from one record before the end of play. Lastly, it's nice to have the motor power to use my classic Discwasher without the platter slowing or stopping.

I have purchased several HiFi products from Crutchfield and like the other components this Technics SL-1500C arived in two days and in perfect condition. After assembling the turntable and checking the pre mounted Ortofon 2M Red cartridge for proper alignment I placed a MoFi master recording on the platter and sat back to listen. I bypassed the built in phono. My signal chain is as follows. SL-1500C connected to a Ifi Zen phono preamp to a Emotivia TA1 to a Emotive A2 powering a matched pair of ADS L710's. I'm not a fan of the 2M Red. I have a referance turntable with other mm & mc carts, so I imediately removed the 2M Red cart and replaced it with a Shure VN 5 MR, fabulous! The turntable is silent adding no coloration to the sound that I could discern. I then switched carts to a Hana ML moving coil. The Technics handled this cart without any issues, again fabulous! The VTA ajustment for varing cartridge hights is a breeze to adjust. I would recomend this turntable to someone who is looking for a great performance to value rataio, minus the 2M Red. One would need to spend considerable more money to gain any significant improvements in performance.

Love it!

Bought this turntable to replace a much cheaper turntable that I purchased as I leaned toward going back to listen to more vinyl. Was very easy to setup even for someone who is not tech savvy. The sound difference between the two turntables could not be more dramatic! The highs and lows are amazing. I feel like I was missing out on half the recorded music. My cartridge is an Ortofon red which came with the turntable but I upgraded to the Blue and have yet to replace the red as I was pleased with the result so far. I purchased all my other items for making sure the cartridge pressure and alignment will be correct. Will give it a few more days then change out cartridges. Looking forward to hearing the difference. Shipping was easy and I actually recieved my product ahead of schedule. Was well packaged. The quality of the build of this table is impressive! For me it was well worth the upgrade!

Round n Round

I've favored belt drive with isolated motor outside the platter near corner of plinth for decades. However, I've always respected Direct Drive's accuracy. This table should be on everyone's list between $850-$1300- wide gap you say but with what this table includes its worth $1100 or more!

Really happy with this turntable

I bought this for my first higher-end turntable for home listening. I have a little experience with other direct-drive turntables, and like the whole concept--dealing with belts is something I'd rather avoid. So I was pleased to hear their direct drive has been refined over the years for the home listener. I thought about holding out for the 1200GR, but I didn't need many of its bells and whistles. While the direct drive system in it may be slightly better than the 1500C from what I've read, the 1500C's cost and the fact it was actually available were the clinchers. After years of enjoying music on vinyl, but not truly getting the hype, I feel like I get it now--the music feels more alive! I don't have an ear for the things others talk about, but music I've known intimately for decades now sounds like it has been rejuvenated. I may look for a cartridge that gently rolls off the highs, as is my taste, but the overall sound has me very pleased. The only thing close to a negative was the lid had two stress cracks on the outer sides of the hinges, but they are not glaring, nor do they impede the function of the lid. Some may not like that the tonearm has no "damping" to ease it onto the vinyl--your own movement of the lever determines the speed and timing of its contact with the groove. To me it just speaks to how this is a mostly manual turntable. Speaking of, the auto-lift at the end of a side is just the right amount of automation for me--I like that the rest is manual.

Hard to beat!

Excellent turntable for the price! In my opinion it's better than my old VPI Scout Signature! The sound is clear, precise and non-fatiguing,. I am using the factory Ortofon cartridge and a Pass Labs XP-15 phono stage. I love this combination, I can't imagine how the sound is going to be, when I upgraded the cartridge! The soundstage is wide and very realistic . Highly recommended!

There are a few things on this table that do feel a bit cheaper than the classic SL1200 - specifically the cueing lever. But hey, it all works and only time will tell how it holds up. Crutchfield got this to me very quickly and the rep that took my order was extremely professional and efficient. I did request this be double boxed as I'm completely against this trend of shipping in the manufacturer box. I don't want it advertised to the world what is sitting on my porch. Sadly my request wasn't honored and that's disappointing. First time this boxing request hasn't been honored by Crutchfield.

Technics SL-1500C

I had put my vinyl collection(300+) in storage about 15 years ago Sold my old turntable. I got the urge to resurrect my record collection and listen to some vintage music. I did my research and decided to try 2 turntables and one phono preamp. I ordered two "scratch and dent" turntables from Crutchfield knowing I would return at least one. I selected the Technics SL-1500 and the MoFi Studiodeck. I ordered a Schiit Mani phono preamp from Schiit. After extended listening in my system, I selected the SL1500 with the inboard phono preamp as my choice. All the albums I tried sounded really good with that combination. The SL1500 and Studiodeck with the Mani preamp were too bright through the midrange in my system. HIghs and lows were more extended especially on the Studiodeck. It could be due to the Mani more than the turntables. The Studiodeck is a very capable turntable and will better the SL1500 in many systems. I am satisfied with my selection of the SL1500. I like the auto lift feature at the end of record play also.

Brilliant turntable

This is my initial opinion of this turntable. Whilst many have disparaged the tone arm function and it's ability to feel proper and function accordingly, I haven't experienced any issues with the tone arm. I did however read instructions, and follow instructions. To be quite fair, I didn't have at it the all American way, and just blindly set up with blind gusto. I however adjusted the tone arm height, cue lever height and made proper corrections as with tone arm balance. I'm using an Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge paired to an Cambridge AXR 85 receiver driving a pair of Klipsch 600 M speakers located in my sitting room 26 feet 5 by 20 feet 7. Not a large room, but the sound fills the entire room. Now the Technics turntable provides a equal balance across the frequency spectrum and presents in a most natural way. Music played: Dave Brubeck- Time Out Dave Brubeck- Time Futher Out Bill Evans Trio- Waltz for Debbie Bill Evans Trio- Live at the Village Vanguard Bill Evans Trio-Portrait in Jazz The Who-Quadrophnia Yes-Fragile Van Morrison- Latest Record Project Lynard Skynyrd Second Helping. Every album sounded brilliant, better than I have ever heard before on my Audio Technica LP5, which is a more than capable turntable. I rated this Technics turntable as solidly built, easy to set up and more than capable of handling any style of music. It's a brilliant turntable at a very affordable cost. Technics SL-1500c

Was deciding between this and a couple of other turntables. Called and by chance spoke with Lane. Gave him the details of my system and asked for his advice and opinion of those I was considering. After some discussion, we agreed the SL-1500c was the better selection. I really appreciated him taking the time and being patient throughout the call. I did go with a scratch and dent model, which saved me some money. The SL-1500c arrived intact, and the only blemish I could find was a small scratch on the dust cover. Assembly was easy, and it sounds and works great!

Excellent Direct Drive Table

Overall, a well built, great sounding turntable. In the week+ I have had it, I have been going through my collection of vintage and newer LPs and rediscovering the joy of playing a well produced record via a well designed turntable/cartridge. I have thus far used it with the included 2M Red cartridge, an AT VM95ML, and an AT 440Mla with a NOS AT stylus. Phono preamps have been a Schiit Mani and a Cambridge 640p. I have not tested the onboard preamp or the auto-lift. I had placed an order for a 1200GR from another vendor, but just missed the cut when the last of the MIJ tables were sold out. Truth be told, I did not care for the DJ stuff on the 1200, so the 1500c became a viable candidate. I did not really need the on-board phono preamp, or the included Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, but I accepted the trade off to get a Technics DD table without the strobe and pitch slider stuff. So, how does it sound? From the moment I dropped the needle on a Japanese EAS pressing of Abbey Road, I had a grin on my face that could not be removed. Even with the 2M Red, the sound of this deck was wonderful. The overall tonal balance was good, and the cart tracked the inner grooves without any obvious issues with inner groove distortion. Moving up to the 95ML, and then to the 440Mla, the tonal balance did shift a bit (as one would expect), treble detail improved, and tracking of highly modulated passages improved. All things considered, a very satisfactory purchase.

Scratch & Dent Experience

This review is regarding Crutchfield's "Scratch & Dent" merchandise. I had a Technics 1500 back in the 80's which brought great memories. So when I saw the new SL-1500C and after doing some research, I knew I just had to get it. Unfortunately the SL-1500C had been out of stock forever. Then I stumbled upon a link which had this turntable available sold as "Scratch & Dent". I was initially hesitant because I am very particular about keeping all my audio gear flawless but I decided to chance it anyway. When I received the turntable, it was packed as if it came from the factory. When I examined the turntable carefully, I could not find where it was scratched and/or dented. If I used a magnifying glass, I could see a very faint area of the turntable where a very minute portion of the paint "might" have been rubbed off. So for all practical purposes, this turntable is flawless and I saved $117. So glad I went for it. As for performance, what can I say. The sound stage is astounding when paired my my custom McIntosh amplifier driving a pair of Bowers & Wilkins 606S2 speakers. I did upgrade the cartridge to an AT-VMN95SH and couldn't be happier. The SL-1500C is every bit as exciting as my vintage 1500. The SL-1500C does not have a strobe like my older turntable but at my age, that's a feature I don't care about. The SL-1500C is extremely well build, has excellent specs, sounds great and is stunning to look at. No need to spend a lot of money for superior sound

A fantastic TT at a great price

I purchased this TT as an upgrade from a more entry-level (but still quite capable) TEAC. I really wanted a direct-drive, semi-automatic table and the SL-1500C fit the bill. I will admit that the Technics look was never my favorite (I thought my TEAC was quite pretty!) but I've grown to love it. Very easy to set up and adjust, and the plug-and-play headshell/tonearm made upgrading to the Ortofon Bronze a breeze. The tonearm lift/lower lever feels a bit mechanical but you get accustomed to it. Some folks have complained that the end-of-record lift feature can kick in prematurely (and I encountered this as well on a couple of albums and 45s). However, there are actually two settings to this function and the remedy is available in the service manual (you can find it online). Problem solved! GREAT Technics technology and sound without the unnecessary DJ functions. Looks and feels solidly-built, like a Technics should. I'm not using the pre-amp but others have said it is quite capable. I really dig this turntable!

Great Turntable

Well built and excellent quality. My first turntable (back in the day) was a Technics. Good to get back to one. Normal looking, classic turntable. There are a bunch of manufacturers that are making a bunch of crap. Just keep it simple...looks good and sounds great...even at very low levels for background music.

A Modern Classic

I've been thinking about this table for a year or more and finally decided to give it a try. I can't add much to the many reviews that have already been written about the Technics SL-1500C other than confirm that it is solidly built, accurate and produces a sound deep and rich. The "S" arm is versatile and I've put a better cartridge on the Ortofon 2M Red that comes with it; looking to step up again as the arm is well-balanced and of medium mass. Much has been said about the arm lift, and while it's true that it could be better, a little care when lowering the stylus makes for nice contact and when fully depressed there is a satisfying "click" locking the arm in the down position. I'm using the auto-lift and it works as advertised. With it's beautiful, stream-lined appearance it is true to it's lineage; in all respects a modern classic. Recommended.

You cant go wrong with Technics !

Purchase the new Technics Sl-1500 to replace my 40+ year old SL-1300 so this one had some stiff competition to be up against right from the start to be able to take its place. I spent many weeks comparing dozens of tables before deciding to purchase another Technics. One main reason was the direct drive feature that has proven to me to be the best overall design over belt driven. The fully automatic feature of the old table to the new "semi" automatic is going to be missed and will take a little getting used to but the quality and workmanship are equal to that of the old turntable. The sound quality is a perfect 10+, the supplied Ortofon stylus and cartridge as well as the head shell being factory set was a great time saver when it came to set up and the Ortofon stylus gives you a great range of sound and depth. I checked the head shell setting just to be sure it was close and it was perfect right from the factory. The unit looks awesome, sounds great, and I am very satisfied with my purchase and as well the fantastic service given by The Crutchfield Staff once again. Hats off to them in making this just one more smooth, simple, and totally professional purchase. The shipping time was also fantastic. With all the issues going on in our world today especially with shipping issues I was amazed they were able to get this unit to me in the timely manor that they did. My recommendation for this turntable is a hands down yes, I would recommend this over many others.

Just Like My Radio Days

My first experience with Technics turntables was in Radio. We used the SP10 Mk 2s, and they ran 24/7 for decades. And of course they sounded great; they had to. I bought an SL-D205 in 1981, and it's still going strong. But when I saw this table, it reminded me so much of those SP10s that I knew I had to have it. It is a thing of beauty, sounds great, and the Ortofon 2M cartridge/stylus doesn't seem to recognize my old albums have skips and pops. Or rather, they did. There is no pitch control, just like those SP10s. This old Radio lady is just fine with that.

Love it! Immediately swapped out the red for a blue stylus. Then I ditched the cheap stock cable for a OCC copper phono cable. Wow, what a difference! Vinyl never sounded this good on my system. Easy setup. Cue lever works fine on mine. Auto lift is nice for those times when you aren't close by. It takes a while though. There is a video on the net showing how to program it to lift earlier which I may try. I am using a tube phono preamp so I can not comment on the built-in preamp. Well built direct drive bliss. Another excellent Technics TT!!

Purchased to replace my good ole trusty Technics SL-D202, which I moved to another listening area, as I wanted to upgrade. I stayed with Technics as I'm familiar with them, and love them, and the reviews across the board for this model are excellent plus the easy speed selection between 33/45/78 rpm was a must for me. Setting up was simple, as expected, and the feel of the controls, materials used, and sturdiness are excellent. I don't use the internal phono preamp and it nice there is a switch to defeat/turn-off. Out of the box, the sound is great with the Ortofon 2m Red and another reason I stayed with Technics, and the S-shaped tonearm, is that I can purchase other headshell/cartridge combos and easily upgrade or change the combo. The auto-lift function, which lifts the tonearm at the end of a record, is another nice feature for peace of mind, however, you do hear an audible mechanical "click/bong" when it engages and wish that were quieter but not a problem for me and, no, it does not transfer to the speakers. Overall, I'm very happy with this TT!!

Legendary performance for the price

Great mid level table. Much better sound stage, bass and clean sound than my Audio Technica (which was great). Instructions were a bit hard to figure out until I realized that the optional counterweight was not needed with the factory Ortofon Red cartridge. Phonostage is great so you don't have to match to the cartridge. For the pricepoint, it is hard to beat. Next level, you'd probably have to spend 3x this.

An excellent turntable with upgradability.

The Technics SL1500C is a wonderful turntable. Put on a higher quality cartridge and use a dedicated preamp and you have one very nice sounding record player. I installed an AT VM95ML cartridge and couldn't be happier with the fidelity this turntable provides. The background is ink black and dead quiet. Separation between instruments is excellent and the overall dynamic width and depth of the sound is immersive. Set up is very straight-forward and all of the necessary adjustments are available; VTA, VTF, and even azimuth. The auto-lift feature is a nice convenience and the cue lever is smooth and consistent. With it's own built-in preamp, and it's noteworthy build quality, this turntable will suit beginning record spinners as well as demanding listeners.

5th Technics and loving the new motor system

Well I had to return the first SL1500 Black because of an anti skate problem and since they were out of the black I got the silver and black and I'm just as happy. I was concerned that the anti skate issue may be a design flaw but this one works great and the cueing lever works and feels better. Built like a tank and looks and sounds great. I don't use the Ortofon Red but several moving coils and they sound great. Love the auto lift at the end of the album. This is my 5th Technics in 48 years and sure am glad they are back.

Great mid-level turntable

Great sounding with the internal phono preamp and Ortofon Red cartridge. Smooth, quiet motor. ZERO problems with the auto lift function. The tonearm feels a bit light, but it was easy to balance and set the tracking force. I prefer the dial type anti-skating vs. the tiny weight on a short piece of filament. This is the second turntable I have purchased from Crutchfield in the last 3 months; the first was a Pro-Ject X2. It's hard to compare the "sound" of each turntable. Each one has a feature or two that I like better than the other turntable. Both are connected to high-quality separates using MartinLogan Motion towers.

Excellent Table. Period.

This table strikes a great balance to me for the price & quite reminds me of my old Sony PS-X5, one of my favorite past tables, but it's simpler and a bit better looking. I have it black and really like the matte finish - opposite of a fingerprint magnet. - Plinth damping is excellent. Tonearm and mechanics have that great Technics feel of solidity. - Motor is strong and has been rock solid (hard to overlook the Technics DD stability and longevity of the past). - Onboard phono stage is worlds better than I expected. I've been using it quite a bit. It is dead silent and sounds better than any built-in I've heard. - VTA adjustment is great and despite what some have said about it, I really like the implementation; the lock is secure and adjustment is easy & quick. Huge bonus. - Auto-lift function works fine - I have mine adjusted per service manual posted on VinylEngine to use the innermost position (1 of 2) before auto-lift engages. - Cue lifter many have complained about is just fine. It isn't as dampened as most are familiar with, but adjustable & only takes muscle memory & a bit more care in use, e.g. you can't just flick the lifter up & down and rely solely on dampening to take care of the ascent/descent for you. Rather you need to use it with a bit of finesse. The few complaints about this table are far, far overblown. My only true gripe is a strange internal grounding scheme which causes more RFI than usual when using the phono RCA output (w

Another Great Turntable from Technics with some quirks.

I've been a vinyl guy since the 60's and still have about 5000 pieces , I'm not a TT newbie having owned dozens. My equipment is all separate's, preamp, mono blocks, Martin Logan SL3's, Dahlquist DQ10's,Kef's and a pair of SVS Prime Ultra's piano black, After years of fiddling with separate tone arms and table configurations I decided to go with grace and simplicity. Having owned several very early Technics and being very please with them. this one arrived today. Nice build. easy set up. As others have said the cueing feels a bit cheezie but works fine. Very industrial looking in Black, I love it. I use the phono output with ground wire and not the line out with the phono preamp. I use mostly MC cartridges so only the phono side can be used. When I first set it up I was getting all kinds of strange noises coming out of the table and with all kind of ground configurations. I use an outboard MM/MC preamp with load dip switches for certain cartridges. After several attempts to get rid of the ground noise's I gave up for and while, came back and tried again. This time turned off the phono preamp on the line out side which shouldn't have anything to do with the phono output but it does. Grounded everything again, I tried a bunch of MM's and MC's, life is good. Dead quiet. This is a no frills TT that works great. I do use the extra counter balance weight for my Denon 103 MC. The auto lift is nice since I'm 67 and fall asleep while listening up late, 3am. I'm all good. Buy it!

Get Ready for Christmas!

Combo Birthday/Christmas present. For me, the sound of this is beyond (really *way* beyond) my expectations. Sound stage, lows-mids-highs, just a visceral sound that you can touch and connect with IMHO. The included Ortofon Red gave a good taste, but with only one channel due to a wire problem between the cartridge and headshell -- but Oh, just that one channel sounded fabulous, what a Taste! With my Nagaoka MP-200 on another headshell, both channels with dramatic effect (again, IMHO). I called Crutchfield re cartridge/headshell left-channel connection issue. Roman answered, we took each other thru the steps I had taken to resolve - and I had another headshell/Red out a few days later. Flawless. I had read/listened to reviews for months. Everything read well about the 1500C. There was one review that said the internal Phono Pre wasn't that great (maybe they tried an MC cartridge by mistake? Works only with MM). So I was already trying to budget for a new Phono Pre as well. No Need!! Shocked at how wonderful this sounds with my MP-200, and fairly exciting with the Ortofon Red. That budget is already going to new vinyl, and I am a happy camper. Please understand I have a decent preamp/amp/speaker set up here from used pieces over the years (full time wind musician 26 years). I'm just so darn delighted, and I think you will be too!

Technics SL-1500c is an Audiophile Quality Deck

I've been spinning vinyl since the early 60's, and currently have 6 turntables, including my new Technics SL-1500c. The 4 turntables in my music room include this 1500, two belt drive Rega decks, and a Pioneer PLX-1000 DJ deck. This 1500 replaced my Technics SL-1200 M3D deck. After reading many reviews about the new 1500, I just had a hunch that I would like the audio from this Turntable. Sure enough, I made a good call on this one. It's hard to find any fault with the audio this deck produces. Best of all, it's a clean design and lacks all the Dj deck controls that just aren't needed for home audio use. I'm picky about my phono cartridges, so I installed my Hana ML moving coil cartridge with an Emotiva XPS-1 preamp. Downstream from this my system is vintage, with a pair of rebuilt Mono tube amps driving a pair of 1959 vintage Frazier "Black Box" theater speakers. A simple alpine stepped volume control is all that's needed to control the source and volume. Haven't tried the Ortofon Red cartridge or the built in preamp on the 1500, so I can't vouch for that audio configuration, but I can attest to the fact that this deck responds well to a substantial cartridge upgrade. And finally, I use the auto arm lift feature at the end of the record, it works fine. The somewhat loose feeling of the arm lift lever should be a Non-Issue for a seasoned turntable user; I'm fine with it. Finally, this is a "scratch-n-dent" unit that arrived in New condition!

Excellent build quality. Best onboard phono stage I have ever heard. Runs absolutely dead quiet. The ease of use and lack of fuss is outstanding. The bass and midrange tones are spot on. Swapping out cartridges is ridiculously simple. The Ortofon Red cartridge that comes stock with the SL-1500C is absolutely fine for newbies and casual listeners, but when I swapped a few others in and out I got to see what this unit is really about. Mated with a higher quality MM cartridge and still using the built-in phono stage, the Technics SL-1500C outperformed a couple of tables I have owned that are twice the price. For most people, including experienced audiophiles, this is the last turntable they will ever need. It can climb the latter of future system upgrades for those that are still chasing the elusive perfect sound and be a set it and forget it solution for the casual, quality oriented music lover. Bravo to Technics. Outstanding!

Solid build, great sound, good looking.

My Pioneer PL-88 finally bit the dust. Rather than purchase a another 70's turntable I went looking for new. The only one I really liked with the specs of a good late 70's TT was the Technics SL-1500C. I wanted a semi-automatic with the that old style look and feel. This TT is a hybrid (not semi-auto), when the tone arm gets to the end it will lift up after about 30 seconds. The tone arm does not retract and the platter keeps on spinning. It is more of a safety feature for a manual turntable (it is fine with me- really not an issue). Some users have complained that the lift arm feels cheap, I tend to disagree. It does have a light feel but I have not had any issues using it to lower the tone arm to the record. I did replace the 2M red ortofon stylus with a 2M Blue. You do not need to replace the cartridge as the 2M Red and Blue stylus fit the same cartridge. I set-up the counter weight / tracking force according to the very clear instructions and double checked it with a Riverstone Audio scale. The difference was -0.09 grams. Not bad for manually setting it up! I also verified the cartridge set-up using a Hudson VTA and Protractor. I did not have to make any adjustments to the cartridge. I did use a better set of cables and grounding wire (the factory does not know the cable length you need). I am very pleased with the overall construction, sound, tracking, and looks of this turntable. I only wish it cost the same as a TT made in the late 70's !

Industry standard! Such a fine piece of machinery . Great customer service that Crutchfield is known for. I had a missing part that they took care of. No major complaints, just feel the cue lever feels a little cheaply made for the price of the turntable. But that's just being picky. I would recommend it highly.
