This is a great BluRay player. It's integrated into my home video system which includes a dirt cheap $89 WalMart video projector with 10'x 5' screen, Roku box, computer, and loads of vintage and newer surround sound audio equipment. Don't laugh at mention of the the WalMart projector if you haven't actually tried one. The Panasonic player produces a terrific picture as well as great sound via Toslink audio to my surround sound equipment. Additionally it works with remotes from earlier model Panasonic players. An undocumented feature allows one to increase playback speed marginally by pressing the forward search button once. Speech is slightly affected but not so much as to be unintelligible, even to my less than perfect 78 year old ears. One can easily shave off 5 minutes per hour of playback, perhaps more, allowing one to binge watch faster. I absolutely despise the Netflix button which is located above the 4 way rocker switch and beneath the Stop button. It's too easy to hit the Roku button in a darkened room, which stops playback and opens a Roku app. IMHO an ergonomic nightmare. After research I found it's impossible to disable the Roku button unless one wants to disassemble the remote, taking a chance on bricking the remote. Instead I pulled out my trusty Swiss Army pocket knife and excised the rubbery button, leaving a hole where the Roku button once lurked. No regrets.
Pros:
Cons: Extremely poor location of the Roku button. Dinged one star becvause of it.

Don from Rochester, MI on 1/29/2025
Solid player!! Plays the discs as I would hope and expect it too. Found a little bonus in the 'home network' section where it automatically found my HDhomerun OTA tuner on the network and provides the cleanest 1080p digital over-the-air signal, better than my other feeds (dedicated tuner, plex server,etc.). Of course, coupled with the normal excellent Crutchfield service/delivery/price experience, we get to five stars.

Bad unit barely used
Mark from Rochester, NY on 12/30/2024
Bought 2 of these 420 units. Scratch & Dent one seems fine so far. Finally got around to upgrading our "movie room" to OLED and 4K. New 420 had "starry spec" issues displayed on dark scenes, even via a high rated HDMI cable. Now it has some sort of runaway overheating issue even when turned off; was causing an overheating issue on the preamp. Since I owned this past the 1 yr warranty, I have no return or free support available. A piece of electronics at this price is recycling now. Will plug in a $1000 Reavon unit using 48Gbps HDMI cables and see how that goes. In the past had great experience with 3 large Panasonic plasmas and Panasonic disc players; looking not so good for Panasonic AV today.

The Excellence of a new Blu-ray player from Panasonic DB 420
George from Marathon, FL on 11/1/2024
I've only had the opportunity to watch it one time the picture was excellent the sound was excellent don't know all the tricks that this player can do but so far it has surpassed the Sony that I had before it it was 7 years old the Sony but this new Panasonic just looks great sounds great and I have an excellent LG TV that's nearly brand new so if anybody's thinking about one give it a shot because you have 60 days to return it to Crutchfield no questions asked I enjoyed doing business with Crutchfield one of the only companies that I feel safe and purchasing their equipment because I purchased it in the past and it was always an excellent condition and I am a happy customer no complaints at all
Pros: Everything that I have to say about it would be a pro I have no cons as of yet

Good at its core function
Whitney from Bellows Falls, VT on 10/21/2024
This does very well as a blu-ray player, especially as it can be set to send all audio digitally out to an AV receiver or pre-pro to be handled there. What it does not offer is the broad support for streaming services that tends to get folded into so many devices today; it's just rudimentary on that side -- which is fine, but then why include it at all?
Pros: Option for full pass-through of digital audio.
Cons: Uses other than blu-ray not well supported.

DP-UB420 - A great reasonably priced player
David from Zion, IL on 6/7/2024
I have been using the DP-UB420 for about four months now and been very satisfied. I only use it to play DVDs and BDs so I can only speak to that aspect of it. My only wish is that the "Netflix" button on the remote was smaller or somewhere else on the remote. If you accidentally hit the "Netflix" button and you do not have Netflix, like I do not, the player seems to get stuck trying to connect to Netflix. The only way I have found to exit the player's attempt to connect is to completely turn off the UB420. This is kind of a pain if you were trying to access settings on a DVD or BD using the up arrow, or "Stop" a DVD/BD that is playing but hit the "Netflix" button by mistake. Overall, a really great solid player with a minor personal annoyance on the remote.
Pros: Solid dependability and plays DVDs/BDs very well.
Cons: Personal annoyance with the remote.

Expectations Exceeded
Ivan from Forest Grove, OR on 5/27/2024
First of all, information on this site was very helpful in making my decision and in dialing in the right equipment for my current system. The UB420 delivers as promised, set up was a breeze. I ran it through several movies in my collection ... Music CD's, DVD's, Blu-ray and Dune part II 4k. My experience with this device ... the greater detail visually and audibly exceeded my expectations. My other components with this type of media hit a new level of performance I had not previously experienced. I did however need to split the signal sending the picture to the Samsung 65" OLED to get the full 4K experience and the sound to the AV ... Pioneer SC-1522-K. (this receiver is capable of passing 4K but going to the display directly opened up the full capabilities of the 420) This was easy since the 420 conveniently has two HDMI outs. My Polk RTI-10's, CSI5 center and RM50 surrounds along with the SVS-20-39 PC SUB sounded and punched like never before.
Pros: Ease of operation Loads fast Plays along nice with the other components Sound - superb Visual detail - over the top Price/value, I don't think there is a better choice in this category/price point 10 out 10
Cons: I really can't think of one

Picture & sound are great! Instuction manual is the worst. I am taking the optical output from the blu ray player right into my Cambridge CXA 81. The unit has played every 4K disc I have thrown at it that my 800MKII has skipped or locked up on. In spite of not having Dolby vision (no big deal) the quality is awesome. The ability to tweak HDR and have different audio sound curve options is great. The on line documentation is pretty clear. I found no issues with it. It's no less clarifying than any Sony manual I have ever gone through. A dimmer power LED in a color aside from red would be nice. Streaming? Forget it. This function area of the unit seems left in the 60's around the time internet was first invented. Clunky and very limited. Panasonic needs to do away with this only to save themselves embarrassment. If a person today wants to stream they can buy a streaming device or stream from their smart TV. 4K UDP's are for playing disks. Panasonic qualifies in this area. Thanks Panasonic for keeping that thought and keeping it right. I only hope the success of playing discs through the 420 continues for years to come. My only buyers remorse may be not stepping up to the 9000 instead. If that is my only remorse I am doing well in my decision.

Great unit! Panasonic still performs.
Gary from Woodburn, IN on 1/24/2024
We originally tried a Sony, but knew within a day, that we should have gone with the Panasonic. We've always had Panasonic players and recorders going all the way back to cassettes, CD's and DVD players and recorders. This player replaces a Panasonic that we've had for 14 years and with regard to operations and also the remote, they've kept it all very similar, so hardly any learning curve at all, unlike the Sony which was a nightmare. Obviously, the picture is fantastic and the quality and the speed of operation is better. In our opinion, you can't go wrong with this unit. And as always, Crutchfield was fantastic to work with. Always professional, cordial and knowledgeable. Excellent packaging and very quick shipping. Love dealing with Crutchfield. At least there's still one place you can receive true service in this country. Thanks Crutchfield.
Pros: Everything!
Cons: The remote is not as large as our old one, but it's still a good size and easy to hold onto. The Sony remote was sized for a 5 year old. I'm assuming more of that stupid minimalist crap.

I paired this to my 65" LG OLED, and I customized the the tv, with it Filmmaker mode. I then went into the settings menu on the 4k player, and customized the 4k output to the tv. It's very easy to accomplish the settings you feel are perfect. I have an older home theater, with a Marantz receiver, Bose 301's for the front, Bose VCS 110 center, Bose 201's in the rear, and an Infinity Entra, CMMD 10" powered subwoofer. The sound customization is great, and will be even better, once I upgrad to a Dolby Atmos system. I highly recommend this 4k player, it's reasonably priced, and has phenomenal picture and sound.

Setup Not Intuitive
Casey from Leavenworth, KS on 12/3/2023
Initially I plugged the DVD player to my (non-4K, HDMI 1.3a) receiver with a single HDMI cable as I would with any device. It would only play some 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray and regular DVD discs- not playing any regular Blu-Ray discs at all. I downloaded the manual (as of course it wasn't included), found the setup connections section, and added a second HDMI cable. Once I put an HDMI cable to the receiver for audio only and another HDMI cable directly to the 4K TV for video only, all discs would play flawlessly with great picture and sound. Since this setup configuration was not intuitive at all, why couldn't they include the manual with the disc player? At least include the setup connections pages in the included quick start guide. Once setup correctly, I could not ask for a better quality disc player, especially for the price.
Pros: Great picture and sound quality (once setup correctly)
Cons: No manual included to assist with non-intuitive setup

Delivered quickly in great condition by Crutchfield. I bought the Panasonic DP-UB420 player to replace a Sony player that failed in less than 3 years. The Panasonic is paired with a Sony XBR-65X950H and operates perfectly. The picture from standard DVDs is exceptionally sharp. Pictures I have on a USB cad are sharp and begin to play automatically. This unit interfaces with my TV much better than the old Sony did, and offers more options. Set up was intuitive but Panasonic offers detailed instructions on line. Very good performer
Richard from HUMBLE, TX on 1/5/2023
What stands out to me is the audio performance of this little character. I listened to Steely Dan's surround sound dvd "Gaucho" and was thoroughly impressed. Heard detail I hadn't before; and I had previously used an Oppo Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Makes me think that Panasonic is an under-appreciated brand. The video performance seems fine to me but is not my first priority so perhaps other reviewers can fill in. I am certainly satisfied and indeed happy with this purchase, which, by the way, was discounted to a very appealing price.
Pros: Syncs with my Sony TV as if by magic, didn't have to set anything up.

Works but has Quirks
John_in_NC from Zebulon, NC on 12/27/2022
Plays DVD's great but has some quirks you need to accept. This device plays 4K UHD videos perfectly, and the sound is excellent it also does a great job in upscaling my other DVD's. You need to get the FAST HDMI cable, just look for 8k cables. Then there are a number of menus you need to adjust settings one time but from then on your good. Ok, here are the issues, if you pause a movie, no screen saver, it shuts off after 5 minutes, then does not remember where you left off. If you play a music CD it does not show the song names on the tracks its just Track1...Track2...Track3 etc. The EArc works well. If I insert a DVD into the player, the tv, Denon receiver etc all switches to that source automatically. I can also pause and play the movie from the LG Magic Remote (I have a LG G2 TV). No overheating, no freezing no skipping, that is all good. I do hope however they give us a screensaver and show artists in the CD Menu and get rid of the loud ping sound when you select apps from the player.
Pros: Plays DVDs great!
Cons: No screensaver, does not remember where it left off and does not show titles on Music CDs

I would give this piece of junk a negative rating if I could. Worked for about 7 months and then all of a sudden when it tries to read a Blu-ray disk there is terrible loud distortion. I was afraid it would damage my speakers. It plays DVDs okay. I called Crutchfield and they gave me a # for Panasonic since it is still under warranty. When I called this # there is voicemail of some guy who says to leave a message. Have left two messages over two days and heard nothing. This is how a major corporation provides customer support? Plays well with Projectors
Wendell from Los Angeles, CA on 8/9/2022
Ok, great picture, though, not a huge difference between Blu-ray and 4k, but does better than Sony players. No hiccups, or picture dropouts, like Sony. Plays well with middle of the line projectors, as there is no HDR or Dolby Vision. Streaming apps after Netflix & Prime Video are basically useless, hopefully this will be addressed in future updates, with more streaming services. General playback overall is really good. Would hope it continues to perform.
Pros: Easy setup. Good picture, Loads fast. Clean front panel.
Cons: Made out of Plastic, so build quality is suspect. Dated interface. No back lighting on the remote. But, figured this would happen, when OPPO left the market. With a new high end player available from different manufacturer, this might now force the rest to step up their Blu-Ray/4k game.

Poor UI and drops the ball on basic functions
Andrew from Danville, CA on 5/21/2022
I bought the UB420K to replace my 10 year old Panasonic BDT320, and found it has many of the flaws of the old model. First, the easy stuff: the 420 plays most discs well. It's quick and has average mechanism noise. Note that I didn't try 4K discs because all my HD discs are 2K. However, it did have trouble playing two regular DVDs, completely freezing on one. Beyond this, the Panasonic's user experience is based on a re-skin of a creaky old UI from 10 years ago with a big, visually obstructive on-screen Options overlay and many nested submenus to get to needed functions. As a result there is still no direct "Subtitle" button; one has to navigate through several levels to get at it (though there is a direct CC button - useless for most). Panasonic did finally add a direct "Audio" button (though track switching is oddly slow). The remote is too small, with the buttons being laid out by geometry instead of function so wrong presses happen constantly. Surprisingly, UB420 can't correctly play a video m3u playlist from a DLNA server. You have to manually play each title in the list instead of having it autoplay. Unlike the old BDT320 this one is cheaply made: the disc tray is flimsy, and the plastic fascia came out of the box scratched from the packing material because there was no cling film on it. Labor warranty is only 90 days (!) for a unit at this price. This seems like a weak effort from Panasonic that drops the ball on basic functionality.
Pros: Loads quickly; played most discs I tried (only 2k HD and DVDs, I don't have 4K discs).
Cons: Outdated and slow-to-navigate UI: no direct "Subtitle" button; audio tracks are slow to switch; it can't correctly play m3u video playlists from a DLNA server; froze on one DVD; crummy remote; overall cheap build; stingy 90 day labor warranty.

JUNK - Defective, not worth 25 cents
Brian from Miami, FL on 3/10/2022
I received this player and it worked for maybe a few days. They I would get error messages such as "Copyright violation", "Unable to read format", or if it played , 4 out of every 5 discs (some Netflix and some brand new 4K discs or 1080p discs) would have the sound drop out every couple of seconds, or I get a LOUD (scares the crap out of you loud) burst of static. Not only this one, but I bought another Panasonic (DP-UBB20), at twice the price as this one, for my other location, and it did the EXACT SAME THING. So because I work outside the US, I sometimes order stuff in advance of leaving. Bottom line, I waited until I got a new Denon (5 weeks later) to hook it up. Both of the Panasonics were beyond the 60 day return period. So I wound up buying two LG units (good reviews) to replace these. So I am out $750 for machines that have the identical problem. This appears to be a Panasonic systemic problem. DON'T BUY PANASONICS!!

Worst BLURAY player EVER
Mark from Hamilton, OH on 2/26/2022
This is the worst piece of equipment I have ever had. Bought 15 New 4K UHD bluray disks. Would you be amazed to know this player only played 9 of 15. I kid you not. So I replaced it with a Sony 700x. This is the player to own. It has near perfect performance. Would have given the panasonic player a negative 10 stars if it were possible. Please, DO NOT buy this product. You have been duly warned.
Pros: NONE
Cons: I cannot count high enough.

This is an amazing 4k Blu-ray Player, especially for those with Samsung TVs! The HDR Optimizer really brought my picture to life and helped balance out the over-darkening of Samsung's aggressive tone mapping. It brightened the overall picture where it should and restored lost shadow detail while still keeping blacks at their appropriate level. 100% recommended this player!
Pros: -HDR Optimizer -HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG Support -Atmos, DTS-X, and other HD Audio Format Support -Small foot-print
Cons: -No Dolby Vision (Get the UB-820 for that) -A bit noisy on start-up

Have had this for a little over a month now and have watched 12 4k movies on it. The settings are great, it loads fast, and has not lagged or skipped or anything. My discs are brand new so I don't know how well it handles if they get dirty or anything, but so far I can't think of one thing to even complain about. The second HDMI output for audio is also great since it allows me to connect to my older receiver, and it bitstreams the lossless formats just fine. It's also slim so you can fit it pretty much anywhere.

Mark Ricky from Dublin, VA on 1/30/2022
The quality of the product is 2nd to none. The size of the unit kinda throws me for a curve. It looks like a childs toy but has the picture quality of it's bigger brothers. I wish I had purchased the UB 480 Because of the size of the unit. I'm hooked on 19" products. But this is a really good unit for the money. The picture quality is great, and it offers features found on more expensive units. If I can get over the size all will be well. This unit is defiantly worth the bucks!
Pros: Another quality-built Panasonic unit!

Great product, poor instruction manual
Robert from Joliet, IL on 1/8/2022
I bought this particular Blu Ray player because of its combination of features, price, and good reviews; as well as my previous good experience with Panasonic products (such as their plasma HDTVs and DVD players). It has performed up to expectations with one noticeable issue. As is true of so many electronic products today, it has exceptional capabilities and optional, customizable functions. The problem with many products such as this one is that their instruction manuals do a poor job of listing and explaining their capabilities and functions. In this case of this Blu Ray player, initially I could not get any sound output from the optical (Toslink) audio port. The instruction manual troubleshooting tips were vague and unhelpful, and basically useless. It was only after googling the problem, that I found a simple and easy solution on a Panasonic UK website. This is an example of an all-too-common issue that needs to be addressed by manufacturers like Panasonic.
Pros: Excellent performance
Cons: inadequate instruction manual

So Far, So Good
John from Bolton, MA on 1/8/2022
After owning this a couple of weeks it appears to be doing what it's advertised to do. I do not have a 4K display so I don't know how it would look or handle Ultra HD discs. I did knock off one star because, even though it advertises itself as a "streaming video" player, it appears to lack the ability to add to the the three or four streaming applications (e.g., Netflix, which seems to be working hard to capture the streaming universe) it comes equipped with. Hopefully this will fare better in durability than the Samsung players I previously owned, which seemed to have a built-in self-destruct timer.

I have had this player for a year plus and it is now starting to skip through cds. The interface is like working in DOS and I do not feel the picture is any better than streaming. Not the best purchase I have made.

MICHAEL from Cincinnati on 1/4/2022
I originally purchased this item in March of 2020 it played well but by December it was not working. I contacted Crutchfield and they sent me another one I received that around this 7th of January 2021 now here we are January 4th 2022 and it doesn't work again. It was not heavily used mostly play my granddaughter's cd's. I would not recommend this product to anyone. Crutchfield was very helpful but they will only replace it one time and since it is now out of warranty they won't be able to help me. Is it possible that I got two lemons I guess anything is possible.
Pros: Great when it works
Cons: Only works for about a year

Perfect for Projectors
Crutchfield customer from Great Mills, MD on 12/12/2021
This model provides all of the video features I needed for the best price. My objective was to provide the best video quality to my 4K projector (VW295ES), and this model has all of the necessary features to accomplish that (customizable tone-mapping, SDR "conversion"). I also still use an older receiver, so the dual HDMI outputs was a must. It has worked perfectly and looked great for all of the UHDs I've tested so far. I only use this for playing UHD blu-rays (have separate BR player and HTPC for streaming).
Pros: Customizable Tone-mapping SDR "Conversion" (really HDR tone-mapping and gamma processing in UHD player) Dual HDMI Outputs
Cons: No IR cable input (almost none have that these days) Front door makes IR repeater placement slightly more challenging

A very good player for the money
Crutchfield customer from Crawfordsvlle, IN on 11/18/2021
I bought this to replace a failing older Sony 4k DVD player. In terms of bang for the buck, this is a very good player. 4k picture quality and 3D are excellent. Audio supports most surround formats. Outputs are minimal. HDMI and one optical. I am pleased it has both rear and front USB inputs. This makes connection to my hard drive much cleaner. Basic setup is easy, but I had to research how to defeat HDR settings, since my TV is too old to support it.

Needing to replace a older dvd and bluray player, so doing some research found this Panasonic UB420 would fit both my budget and work well with my new 4K UHD-TV. I was also looking for a drive that would allow me to connect a Hard Drive with many videos in MKV and MP4 formats. I connected a WD 2 TB Elements Drive, formatted as FAT32, and this working great for me; I will eventually get a 4 TB drive when my 2 TB drive ha reached its capacity. Great For The Money
Guest from Visalia, CA on 8/27/2021
I have two 420's and an 820. The 820 is hooked up in our main living room to our Samsung Quad JS9500 78" TV, and it will blow your mind. One 420 is in the family room hooked up to our LG OLED 65" C9. The other is in our bedroom hooked up to our LG OLED 55" B8. They all are great. If you can't afford an 820, and you want great quality for the money, then this is your ticket. I have had 4K players by other companies, Sony, Samsung, and LG Just to name a few, but Panasonic blows them away when it comes to picture quality. Not to mention how great the quality remains when playing non 4K movies. If you burn your own, play CD's, or whatever you play through them, you will not be disappointed. I won't buy anything other than Panasonic again.

Few apps, poor linking
Crutchfield customer from Lakeside, AZ on 8/1/2021
Expected more for the cost. Lacking features or apps that most other lower cost units have. You can download Netflix, Pandora, and Prime, and several other, what seams to be Russian and other countries in that area, but does not have other common apps like Hulu, IHeart, and other Movie and Music apps found on other brands. It seams rather slow in response when going thru the pages or selections in Prime and Pandora. Also have to have to go thru more menus just to get to the app you want to run. When there is no Disk in the unit, gives an error rather then stating "no disk installed". Just an annoying message more then a problem. It does have the link feature, so when the unit is powered up it links with the receiver to switch to DVD input. Unfortunately that apparently only works with Panasonic receivers, does not work with my Yamaha. My previous Sony unit had more apps and linked correctly, but was slow at starting up, was problematic, and just quit running one day. Sony, despite the cost, is more of a cheap Walmart Special then a quality electronics. Not a Sony fan, but better then this DP-UB420. I will be looking for an replacement.
Pros: Runs faster start up then Sony
Cons: Slow response in apps not many apps poor linking to receiver bad menu layout

USB a bust
Rick from Cavendish, Vermont on 7/15/2021
Excellent quality. I've always had good luck with Panasonic products. Minimal output ports, a problem with older receiver/amp. Have to use a converter box to get audio from CD to amplifier. One of the main reasons I bought this unit was the promise of USB for movies. I've backed up most of my movies to hard drive, packed away the DVD's. In their online manual they caution that some movies may not play. Have been working for a couple of days with thumb drive and portable HDD. My results... so spotty on what it will play, not worth the effort. Digging out boxes of DVD's again. If all you want is DVD playback to TV and receiver, works fine.
Pros: Excellent playback quality, good menu structure, can connect audio to a receiver/amplifier with optical cable.
Cons: no RCA's for music output; USB playback so spotty, not worth the effort.

Great for bedroom use
Crutchfield customer from Ludlow, MA on 4/22/2021
For me it's a 5 star, since it is for bedroom use on a 9 year old Sony 3D 32" tv. It allows for access to Netflix and utube. The remote is poor quality and lacks many features you would expect in this price range. Case plastic and warranty 1 yr. same as the 800 dollar version. The picture quality for us is awesome, as to use on an had oled I believe it would be good, however I purchased the Sony 800 for the main tv and it's day and night quality build however the software features are lacking on the Sony which for a 100 more offers a superior unit in my opinion.
Pros: Price, hook up options, software.
Cons: Inexpensive build best for occasional use, remote very ow quality.

The little player that could...
Steven from New Fairfield, CT on 3/20/2021
I was in the market for a replacement for my old oppo BD 93 player. The player was very good but it was no longer updateable and quite frankly technology has moved forward. I wasn't interested in the most expensive player as the Blu-ray format has been superseded with 4K and UHD.However I did want a Blu-ray player that could play confidently and would be able to have 4K capability. I find this little Panasonic player to be of good quality and I have not experienced any of the limitations that I've read in some threads. That said I do have a couple of comments in regards to idiosyncrasies of this particular player. For one thing it has no display not that that's a big deal as from the sofa you can't read the displays anyway. All the information you could possibly need or at your fingertips via the remote for on screen viewing which is much better than a display on the player. This is not a full size player it is slightly diminutive in the width and length department and Panasonic has spent less money on an oversized chassis and put more of their money into the electronics. One very interesting idiosyncrasy of the player is that in the order to obtain internet access you must first go into the internet settings and accept their user conditions. Once you've done this then you can access the internet via your player. Overall I find the picture quality and audio to be exceptional and in fact better than my old opal player.
Pros: Exceptional picture and audio quality
Cons: Diminutive side and the network setup can be a little tricky.

I expected more from Panasonic. After a few months the player started freezing while playing Blu-Ray discs. Each time I had to unplug the unit, wait a few minutes, and plug it back in. Thankfully I have an older Yamaha Blu-Ray player that I use for SACDs as a back-up. The discs always played in the Yamaha without any problem. The Panasonic finally froze to the point where I could not remove the disc, even after unplugging the unit for several minutes. I purchased a new Sony player from Crutchfield, hopefully it will be problem free.

As an added bonus I also got this one on sale from Crutchfield. As for longevity - I've only had this player for a month now so can't speak to how long it lasts.
Pros: Fast and pre-installed streaming apps.

Excellent unit

Quick to boot up and get running. My old Panasonic Blu Ray player c2008 is quite slow to decode and get the video going but not this speedy unit. Picture seems to be better too than my old unit. Very pleased. I also much prefer it to my LG unit I got couple of years ago I have in my bedroom
Pros: Quick to get to viewing DVDs.

Good 4K value for the money
Crutchfield customer from Danbury, CT on 11/14/2020
Good value for the price. Excellent 4K picture & sound with both 4K UHD, & 1080p upscaling. However, I found the 4K upscaling on some DVD's to look oddly too bright, "softened", & ultimately unnatural. I compared this DVD upscaling to 4K upscaling on an OPPO, a very high standard to be fair, & found the Oppo DVD upscaling very superior. This may be a consideration if you're planning to continue viewing your DVD's (or have some titles ONLY available on the format). Considering Oppo is defunct, it's quite possible there is NOTHING on the current market upscaling DVD better than the Panasonic in question & it's not exactly a poor upscale to say the least, plus the Panasonic has a lot of little color tweaks many 4K players do not (especially with HDR). This model does not support Dolby Vision. Build quality is adequate, certainly not impressive, only "power" & "eject" buttons on the machine & no digital display whatsoever. On the plus, if you're tight on space this Panasonic is very light & compact. An asset if space is at a premium in your set up. I did have an incident where the Panasonic failed & hung up (while continuing to run) for over 7 minutes & became entirely unresponsive via remote or the unit's buttons when playing a defective blu ray. I had to unplug the unit to stop the spinning & eject the disk. Playing the disk on an Oppo (was able to immediately start & play disk through bad bits a plenty) confirmed. The remote & interface aren't the best I've used.
Pros: Great 4K picture & 1080 upscaling. Small size.
Cons: No Dolby vision, build quality on par with price, DVD scaling possibly not the best but good, remote & interface adequate, but not the best I've used

I've owned this player for about a month and couldn't be happier with its performance. Setup was easy and painless. The video output is phenominal. I haven't had any issues with video playback, as in it locking up. I've watched the following 4K movies on it: Jaws, 1917, Fury, War of The Worlds and INXS: Live Baby Live and The Empire Strikes Back. The video resolution in all of them was stunning and the player was flawless playing them. The upscaling of regular Blu Ray to 4K is pretty darn impressive as well. I have the player connected using both HDMI outputs, one directly to the TV and the other to the receiver. I have it set up this way b/c my current receiver only supports 1.4 4K. My setup...Samsung 65" NU 6900 series, Denon AVR-E300, Boston Acoustics all around with a Velodyne sub in a 5.1 config. I would definitely recommend this player.

DP-UB420 Review + Direct Access
Crutchfield customer from Morrisville, PA on 10/15/2020
Blu-ray & DVD Is perfect. Panasonic Wireless works on 5g, internet access is fast, YouTube streaming is seamless. Current results with Mirroring/ Direct Access feature; pc desktop replication has a very hard time keeping up. Mouse & windowing latency is severe and lockup's occur disabling the session. The Mirroring session only appears to detect the 2.4g connection [most likely] contributing to the latency.
Pros: Perfect as a BluRay/ DVD & streaming player. Video CPU provides excellent color rendering, sharp images and seamless video.
Cons: Direct Access feature needs work to detect a 5g connection.

The main reason I ordered the DP-UB420 was that it has a optical digital output to run into my 2008 Yamaha receiver which has no HDMI. The unit handles just about anything I throw at it, including videos on USB, photos on DVD, mp3 files, etc. Video and audio are excellent even on my non-4K TV. Wi-Fi setup was quick and easy. Unit arrived with the latest firmware, but it does allow updates. Netflix, Amazon & YouTube are installed but the unit cannot add new network apps which is a disappointment. I'm sure I'll find other features to my liking in time to come on the DP-UB420.

Build quality is a bit cheap feeling (lightweight, no display) and it is a hair slow to load and get started. It's streaming capabilities are mediocre as well. With the above exceptions, in every other way, this player is top notch. The HDR mapping is brilliant and only otherwise available in players at double the cost. I have this paired with a JVC Projector and the combination is spectacular. This player is a no brainier for anyone with a projector and the value simply cannot be beat.
Pros: HDR Mapping Value!!! Overall Picture Quality
Cons: "Feels" cheap Remote is kind of "basic" Streaming capabilities are average

Didn't live up to the expectation
Eddie from Jacksonville, FL on 7/10/2020
So I bought this 4K player. The flagship Panasonic 4K player is one of the best on the market so I thought this might be a decent player. I have an oppo blu ray player that did significantly better than this 4K model. lol hen I used my ps4 as a blue ray for comparison. My ps4 did significantly better with a blue ray than this 4K player did. This gave me very washed out blacks and white tones. I was able to get SIGNIFICANTLY superior resolution out of a blu ray than on 4K. Even the pixelation was as worse. Do yourself the favor and at least go to the next model. I thought I met let others know that are trying to save some money. It just underwhelmed. I wish there were reviews to explain it to me and I would have just went with the flagship model. Which is worth the money.
Pros: Price
Cons: Significantly inferior 4K picture quality even compared to a ps4 blu ray.

Great picture quality, but...
Crutchfield customer from Ramsey, NJ on 6/11/2020
First, let me say that the 4K picture quality from this payer is really excellent, especially for the money. I purchased it as a replacement for the Sony UBP-X700, which is also a very good player. I got because of the smaller size and I was going to give the Sony to my son. I like the menu system and how it operates. The ONLY reason I gave it only 3 stars is because whenever I play a 4K disc that offers Dolby Atmos and/or Dolby Vision , which this player does not support, it "hiccups" by either freezing the picture or distorting it temporarily. I spoke with Panasonic twice about this, but there didn't seem to be any way around it. Unfortunately, I had to return the player, but on the upside, Crutchfield made the return process, which I've not used previously, completely painless. A good player, but just not for me.
Pros: Picture quality, easy-to-use remote, good (not great) menu system, good buy for the money
Cons: does not deal well with discs that have Dolby Atmos and/or Dolby Vision

I'm becoming a Panasonic fan.
Arbee from Pikeville, KY on 5/18/2020
If i were basing this on my quality expectations and Blu Ray playback I would give it more than 5 stars. Here's why: I'm replacing a 9 year old Panasonic Blu Ray player that still functions perfectly. So far out of 3 discs (not a good test probably) it's been flawless on playback. It boots and reads fast. I can't imagine it making any audible noise during playback unless you have your head close to it and muted the TV. The downside is, the streaming app interface is exactly the same as the 9 year old it's replacing. Youtube and a couple of apps that have been stripped from the old player in an update are back, but the interface is still dated and still not as fast and fluid as it should be. My humble recommendation is if you are buying it strictly for a player I doubt you will get a better player for the money. Most people have Firesticks and Rokus anyway. I was tempted to give it 4 stars but didn't really feel that fair with the number of streaming options available on other platforms and no experience with the few competitors. As usual, Crutchfield made buying easy. Thanks
Pros: Fast and quiet enough. Great image quality. No hiccups
Cons: Dated and limited streaming interface

I bought this to replace an older Panasonic Blue Ray which was not 4K ultra H.D. This unit does not look as good as the older unit and has many plastic parts. (i.e.) When I open the DVD drawer the plastic cover stays open. When I remove the DVD the plastic cover remains open. I believe I will be returning it for a better model. Possibly an LG since I have an LG OLED TV. Crutchfield has been great t work with.

It took me a little while to set it up but had trouble with Blue Ray Discs displaying the image. There was sound but no image. However, thanks to a Crutchfield tech who helped me change a couple of advanced settings the Panasonic DVD player displayed a good image, not great. That's why the 4 stars. Other than that everything is going well and have experienced no problems connecting to the internet. I have a 8 year old Samsung TV and maybe that's why images from Blue Ray Discs are good but not outstanding. Sound is good but not again not outstanding. I have a 7 year Onkyo receiver, maybe that's why. But for the price I paid for this Panasonic DVD player I am satisfied. Maybe when I migrate to a 4k TV and to a more modern audio receiver that has all the whisles, things will change. Be sure to take advantage of the free tech help that is provided by Crutchfield should you encounter a problem with any DVD player you buy from them.

Great pea to go with a Q60R carrot
Crutchfield customer from Harlan, IA on 3/10/2020
Overall Love this Blu-ray player, I have it setup with a Samsung Q60R TV. Both support HDR10+ and gives a great picture. I was originally looking at the DP-UB820 which adds Dolby Vision however the Q60R doesn't support this so no gain for a player that is double the price. I read a few reviews that claimed setup was difficult but I didn't feel that way. It does have a very light weight feel and I can see how this can create a cheap feel for some users but it's all about performance.

Great Disc Player
Crutchfield customer from El Cajon, CA on 3/10/2020
Very satisfied with this purchase. I replaced a DVD/VCR (what is that?) combo, so you can tell I only update when necessary. This unit was chosen because it has 4K capability and I want some future-proofing. (Although I don't have a capable TV.) The price point was good. I didn't need the features available on the more expensive models. Setup was very easy; I'd say 15-20 minutes to finish going through all the menus. I didn't change anything in the advanced menus, but I looked at them. Connection to my router via Wi-Fi only took a couple minutes and has been rock solid ever since. I haven't set up Amazon yet, but Netflix is working flawlessly. Tested out all the discs I had, including Blu-Ray, DVD and CD (commercial and my own compilations). Everything played without any problems. The only capability that's lacking I would be interested in is SACD, and that is a minor issue. Other players had it, so I could have chosen one of them. In the reviews, Panasonic was clearly ahead of Sony (who has been going steadily downhill for decades). I would recommend this unit to anyone looking to upgrade to Blu-Ray, who doesn't want (or need) lots of capability. The 4K compatibility will also give some ability to adapt as standards change.
Pros: Flawless operation | Easy setup | 4K capable | Good value
Cons: Doesn't play SACD

The HDR adjustments are very useful to fine tune an HDR formatted disc. I also like the automatic HDR and UHD features. And the sound just as awesome. Picture Improvement, but Build Quality and Remote Function Regression
Crutchfield customer from Youngsville, NC on 2/27/2020
I replaced my Panasonic DP-RP62 DVD player(still working) with this, because Panasonic no longer makes just a Blu-Ray player, which is all that I wanted. I still have a Panasonic 1080P plasma tv, so was not interested in all the 4K stuff. I also don't have internet at home, due to living out in the country, so all the online apps were of no interest to me. Comparing it to my old, made in Japan DVD player, the only thing that this improves is the picture, which is great. It is not built nearly as well as my old player, there is no dispay on the front for playing CDs, and the remote on the new player is a joke, compared to the remote on my old one. The remote size is about the same, but the new one lost many functions that are on the old remote, such as zoom, subtitle, cinema mode, setup, program, dialogue enhancer. On the old player, if I wanted to turn on subtitles after starting a British movie, I just hit the subtitle key on the remote. I still haven't figured out how to turn on the subtitles after starting a movie, on the new one. I gave it 3 stars for the great picture and sound on Blu-ray disks, and the upscaling does a good job on a standard DVD. Other than that,I consider it a large step backwards from my 17 yr old player.
Pros: Picture and Sound
Cons: Build Quality and Remote Function

Panasonic DP-UB420
Crutchfield customer from Woodstock, GA on 2/5/2020
The picture quality is excellent due to HCX chip in this player. Very easy to set up and like various option to adjust picture quality. Only drawback is missing Dolby Vision (DV). But overall very solid player for picture and sound with sale price. I Would highly recommend.
Pros: HCX chip for high end picture quality HDR customization Very easy to setup
Cons: No Dolby Vision ( DV)

Panasonic DP-UB420
Crutchfield customer from Mont Alto, PA on 2/2/2020
Best 4k Bluray player for the money as long as you don't need Dolby Vision. I waited for Crutchfield to put it on sale and jumped on it immediately. I hooked it up immediately and played a couple 4k movies with my 82" Samsung Q82R. Very nice combination that looks great. No complaints whatsoever. I was going to go with the 820, but I couldn't justify the jump in price.
Pros: Great bargain
Cons: No Dolby Vision

Good for the price
Crutchfield customer from Boyce, LA on 2/2/2020
So far haven't used it much. It seems pretty lightweight. I played a cd with it and it sounded very good (Beatles Abbey Road Delux). Also watched an old Columbo dvd. It upscaled the image well. For the price I am very satisfied. I have it hooked up to a Marantz NR 1609.

Panasonic Player Scores
Crutchfield customer from Virginia Beach, VA on 1/20/2020
For my purposes, an excellent machine. I didn't need Dolby Vision or super high end surround options on this, so no points deducted. I did need brilliant 4K UHD HDR picture, easy navigation, and perfectly listenable aiudio playback. Set up was a breeze, and disc playback was stable and completely reliable - totally unlike the similarly priced Sony player I had to send back (to a different retailer) which was total junk. Never had a problem with Panasonic.
Pros: Delightful UHD HDR picture Easy set-up Stable, reliable, does what it says it will do Good audio flexibility
Cons: For me,, none

Nice Player - Please give it a front panel display
Crutchfield customer from York, PA on 12/28/2019
Bought this player to replace a brand new Sony UPB-X800M2 unit that refused to play standard DVDs. Crutchfield's great technical support and return policy made that process simple. This Panasonic unit was simple to setup although the firmware update took much longer than I expected. The menu interface is simple and easy to use and the player has a small footprint compared to other DVD players. The picture quality (connected to my LG OLED TV) has been outstanding and the player syncs well with the TV and my Bose Soundbar 700 via CEC. The only reason I didn't give this player 5 stars is that it really should have a display on the front panel so you can tell what it's doing. All you get is a little red light to let you know it's turned on. The lack of display seems to be typical of players in this price range but I'd gladly pay a few extra dollars for a small display.

Unbelievable product, the 4k Blu-ray player of 2019 It doesn't matter that this player lacks Dolby vision because the HDR optimizer is just as good. I highly recommended this player
Pros: All good
Cons: Lack of display is going a little cheap

Bargain Powerhouse
Crutchfield customer from Omaha, NE on 12/21/2019
The DP-UB420 fills a need I had within my home theater. I feel that running a projector with HDR content is part science and part art. The UB420's HDR Optimizer allows you to dial in your HDR picture for each movie. Rather than just compromise on one setting with a static calibration you can change the settings on the fly. As I said, part science and part art. I gave it 4 stars because I know the 820 or 9000 are more solidly built. Otherwise it's quite a bargain for the features.
Pros: HDR Optimizer
Cons: Not much but you can pay more for higher build quality in the 820 or 9000.

Superior Video to Oppo 203
C Jay from West Des Moines, IA on 11/24/2019
Wonderful budget player. Lacks Dolby Vision but other than that it puts out video comparable to the much more expensive Panasonic UB820 and UB9000 models and beats my Oppo 203. Very basic remote and build quality to keep the price low, but you can always go to eBay for upgraded backlit remote from the UB9000 model for under $20. Highly recommended if you don't need Dolby Vision or the audiophile upgrades of the more expensive Panasonic players. As a bonus it can play most region B and C Blu-rays--just hit Stop on remote when region error message appears and then hit Top Menu button once or twice, though this trick doesn't work for DVDs.
Pros: Price Superior video
Cons: No Dolby Vision Cheaply made Basic remote
