Panasonic DP-UB9000 guts shot

The DP-UB9000's incredible build quality contributes to its remarkable picture and sound quality.

We were stunned when Oppo stopped building their fantastic Blu-ray players in 2018. Since then we've been waiting for a player that could match their reference-quality picture and sound. For many, Panasonic's beautifully built flagship model DP-UB9000 will put an end to the waiting.

The Panasonic gives up nothing to the Oppos when it comes to picture quality. In fact, some reviewers have found that it slightly outperforms them, at least when it comes to 4K Blu-ray playback and upconversion of 1080p Blu-rays. If you're a videophile with high-end equipment, the DP-UB9000's powerful processing and flexible adjustments will help your 4K TV or 4K projector deliver the best possible 4K/HDR picture.

To be fair, the DP-UB9000 doesn't match the flexibility of the Oppo players — especially the UDP-205. It's not a universal player so it can't play SACD or DVD-Audio discs. And it lacks the digital audio and HDMI inputs that allowed the UDP-205 to improve the quality of external audio and video signals.

But as a Blu-ray player, it is currently without peer.

Getting the best HDR picture quality

A big part of why 4K Blu-ray and streamed 4K content looks so lifelike is HDR — High Dynamic Range. It can provide a much wider range of contrast and colors than HDTVs ever could. But while all current 4K TVs can accept HDR-enhanced signals, many can't display the full potential of HDR due to their limited peak brightness.

It comes down to "nits"...

A TV's brightness is measured in "nits." Before TVs had HDR, typical peak brightness was around 250-300 nits, and most TV shows and movies were mastered at 100 nits. By comparison, today's OLED and midrange LED-LCD 4K TVs produce peaks of 700-1000 nits, and a handful of the brightest LED TVs can hit peaks of 1200-1500 nits. Meanwhile, 4K/HDR content is mastered at levels up to 4000 nits — way beyond the capability of any consumer 4K TV.

...and tone mapping

So how do you display 4000-nit content on a TV capable of only 25% of that brightness level? Tone mapping. This process helps a TV properly display content with higher peak brightness than the TV was designed to support. There's a lot of variation in the way tone mapping works from one TV maker to another, and what often happens on high-brightness material is the extreme highlights are "clipped," resulting in a "blown out" look that obscures detail.

Panasonic has developed some unique menu controls that make it easy to improve the look of HDR-enhanced content on your 4K TV. For example, you can choose from several tone-mapping options that are customized for different TV or projector brightness levels: OLED, High Luminance Projector, Basic Luminance Projector, Super High Luminance LCD, Middle/High Luminance LCD, and Basic Luminance LCD.

Selecting the appropriate setting for your display should provide better-looking HDR picture quality with more visible fine detail in bright and dark areas of the screen.

You can further fine-tune HDR performance by adjusting brightness based on the light level in your room. These picture adjustments work whether you're watching a UHD Blu-ray disc or 4K streamed content using the player's built-in apps.

Sound that keeps you riveted

Panasonic didn't forget about the sound — all the top movie formats are supported. There's built-in processing for the most common flavors of Dolby and DTS surround, and you can send three-dimensional audio formats like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X to a compatible receiver via HDMI. When it comes to music, the player delivers rich, detailed sound for your CDs, and its high-performance DAC can handle high-res PCM and DSD audio files.

Panasonic paid a lot of attention to the construction of this player, for better sound with hi-fi home theater and stereo systems. This is one of the very few Blu-ray players you'll find with a vibration-reducing metal chassis, and the disc drive is rock solid. Panasonic's engineers separated the power for the audio DAC and analog output circuit, greatly reducing noise generated by the optical drive and video signal processing.

The DP-UB9000's versatile design includes a 7.1-channel set of RCA outputs for getting great surround sound even when connecting to A/V receivers that lack HDMI.

    • Chroma Processing: The unit supports up to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling for full color data rendering of ultra high-definition video. This allows the Ultra HD Blu-ray player to offer twice the color range of existing conventional Blu-ray players and 64x higher color expressions, surpassing the digital cinema standard. With 4K high precision processing and upscaling, 4K (4:2.0) image color signals are interpolated into 4K (4:4:4) by an advanced chroma process to give you full, natural textures and depth. As a result, you'll get to enjoy realistic picture quality like never before.
    • HDR Optimizer: The HDR Optimizer will display highly bright scenes with smooth gradations based on the luminance information (static metadata) of your playback content. It can even improve high-brightness imaging on HDR-compatible TVs with low peak brightness. Select which type of HDR compatible TV you own - OLED, High Luminancce Projector, Basic Luminance Projector, Super High Luminance LCD, Middle/High Luminance LCD, and Basic Luminance LCD.
    • HDR-to-SDR: When this unit is connected to a TV that does not support HDR (High Dynamic Range), the player's HDR video output is converted to a SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) video signal. You then can manually adjust the dynamic range of the image to produce the best brightness and contrast.

HDR Video: The DP-UB9000P-K supports four HDR (High Dynamic Range) formats; including HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG). HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, bringing greater contrast & wider color spectrum to the screen. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. Previously hidden areas of dark shadow and sunlight are now full of clarity and detail.

    • HDR10: HDR10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
    • HDR10+: HDR10+ is a a new open standard that leverages dynamic metadata to produce enhanced contrast and colors. The HDR10+ technology incorporates dynamic metadata that allows the player to adjust brightness levels on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame basis. By applying individualized tone mapping to each scene, HDR10+ delivers an incredible viewing experience. The picture quality offers an enhanced visual experience with more detailed expressions, brighter shadow areas and more accurate color renderings that stay true to the creator's original intent.
    • Dolby Vision: Dolby Vision adjusts brightness, color, and contrast automatically for each scene. It supports 12-bit color and 10,000 nits. Dynamic metadata carries information that maps every image to your TV's display capabilities, so you see more of what the content creator intended. As a result, Dolby Vision delivers incredible brightness, color, contrast, detail, and dimensionality.
    • HLG: HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.

Note: Please use a premium high speed HDMI cable with 18 Gbps and above to view Ultra HD and HDR content.

24p Output: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second, the DP-UB9000P-K will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

3D-Ready: The Panasonic DP-UB9000P-K UHD Blu-ray disc player supports 3D playback of high-definition (up to 1080p) 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses.

Deep Color & x.v. Color: The Panasonic UHD Blu-ray player supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the player and a TV that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a TV that does not support Deep Color. This player can also playback AVCHD discs using the x.v.Color format. x.v.Color offers a wider color range than normal DVD camcorder discs.

Picture Adjustments: You can make picture adjustments to tailor the image quality to your type of content and preference. You can choose between a variety of Picture Types (Normal / Cinema / Fine Cinema / Retro Cinema / Animation / Live), based on what type of movie or TV show you are watching. You can fine-tune the picture image by manually adjusting the picture's Brightness, Contrast, Color Saturation, Hue, Sharpness. In addition, you can turn on Noise Reduction (Block / Random / Mosquito) to reduce unnecessary noise in videos.

    Audio Section

Reference Quality Construction: The Panasonic DP-U9000P-K Ultra HD Blu-ray player offers reference quality construction for audiophile-grade sound that is free from interference, vibration, and noise.

    • AC/DC Conversion Circuit: The main power supply, which provides power to the optical drive and video signal processing circuits, generates a variety of low-to-high frequency noises. These occur, for example, when driving the motor during disc playback, accessing memory, and communicating between peripheral circuits. By separating the power for the audio D/A converter and analog output circuit at their origin, the noise effects are greatly reduced. In addition, soft switching control lowers the noise of the power supply itself.
    • 10-Line Isolated DC Regulator Circuit: The digital and analog power supplies for the D/A converter are isolated. The analog channel is further separated into 2 channels and 7.1 channels, and for the 2-chanel output, the reference voltage of the left and right channels is isolated, making a 10-line regulator circuit and reducing mutual effects to improve distortion. Moreover, high-quality audio grade electrolytic capacitors are used in the analog channel to minimize noise.
    • Low-Noise Op Amps & Audio-Grade Electrolytic Capacitors: The analog circuits for 2 channel and 7.1 channel output are mounted onto special glass-epoxy circuit boards. Together with the use of quality components, such as low-noise operational amplifiers and audio grade electrolytic capacitors, a totally balanced signal transmission is achieved by using differential circuits all the way from the D/A converter output to the XLR output terminal.

THX Certified Sound: This THX certified Ultra HD Blu-ray player achieves lifelike surround sound the way the director intended. Now, you can enjoy movies in your own home with cinema-level quality.

32-Bit/768kHz DAC with Upsampling: A 32-Bit/768Hz DAC supports high-resolution audio to reveal both rich and delicate tones in music and vocals. This audiophile-grade DAC can even upsample low res music files up to 32-bit/192kHz (when the Voice Guidance feature is activated, the maximum upsampling frequency will be fixed at 48kHz).

HDMI Low Clock Jitter Process: The DP-UB9000P-K utilizes a HDMI Low Clock Jitter Process that faithfully reproduces the original sound recorded onto your UltraHD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs for exceptional audio performance.

Analog & Digital Audio Outputs: In addition to HDMI connectivity, the Panasonic DP-UB900P-K is outfitted with both analog & digital audio outputs. There is a 2ch analog stereo balanced XLR output, a 7.1ch analog unbalanced RCA output, a coaxial (RCA) digital output and optical (toslink) digital output. The balanced (XLR), unbalanced (RCA), and coaxial (RCA) output terminals are gold-plated for excellent signal transfer and resistance to corrosion.

    • Balanced (XLR) & Unbalanced (RCA) Outputs: The DP-UB900P-K is outfitted with a 7.1ch unbalanced RCA analog audio output that lets you connect to an AV receiver, preamplifier, or processor with a corresponding 7.1ch RCA analog audio input. The "Front" RCA outputs of the 7.1ch analog audio output can also be used for a 2-channel connection to a stereo receiver. In addition, there is a balanced XLR 2ch output for connection of high-quality stereo receivers and integrated amplifiers. A Balanced XLR connection provides better audio quality with less noise.
    • Optical & Coaxial Digital Outputs: The Ultra HD Blu-ray player is equipped with a optical (toslink) digital output and coaxial (RCA) digital output. Both digital outputs support Dolby Digital, DTS, & PCM (2ch to 5.1ch) audio signals with a sampling frequency of 48, 96, or 192kHz.

Hi as far as I know Panasonic did not release a blue ray Ub9000P1k and the Panasonic DP-UB9000 is still the best high end blue ray player plus it is also a high end cd player. Larry

The players are identical, except for a different set of DAC's being used, as the previous plant producing the DAC's was destroyed in a fire. Production stopped as a result, and is now being resumed with the different DAC's. All specifications are the same, according to Panasonic.

I have the 9000 and love it. I have no experience with the 820. I can tell you that if the 9000 times out and turns off with a 4k Blu-ray on pause, you can hit play and it boots back up to the screen to resume the movie in 12 seconds or so which I feel is pretty fast!

Hi you cannot add apps to this Panasonic player they only have the big three app on the unit. Panasonic only downside is limited apps on unit and the same for Panasonic Tv. So no fandango or movies anywhere for this unit.

Joe, unfortunately, I dot no use apps through the Panasonic DP-UB9000. I did however test it when I first received it and it worked great with Netflix when available the streaming was in 4K. I generally use Apple TV for all my streaming services. Good luck. The Panasonic DP-UB9000 is a fantastic 4k player.

If you are asking whether or not the UB9000 will replace your old Oppo AND a pre-amp/processor, the answer is no. This unit is a stand-alone disc player, designed to be connected to an AVR, or a pre-amp/processor, if that is what you meant. The UB9000 is currently the best UHD player available, so if it's in your budget, get one!

I have an ultra high-end audio system but it is truly only a two-channel stereo system with 4 giant pro-series speakers in each corner of the room powered by 8,000 watts RMS of Crown amplifiers. Does this Blue-Ray player allow you to hear quality movies in stereo rather than surround sound? Also, is it a great sounding stereo CD player for the audiophile?

This player received an award for 2019. You can change it to stereo using the optical or coaxial cables. I do not know if the HDMI connection can be switched to stereo. The audio on this player is excellent. Hopefully this information is helpful to you.

It sounds fine, this unit has no DVD Audio or SACD so I had to add another unit for those. Why can't someone make a universal DVD/CD player with high quality balanced outs. Frustrating, buy an old Oppo.

Yes to movies in stereo, you can use the analog outputs with the player converting the signal. As far as the cd playback, goes I find the player to be excellent. For more on this unit, check out sound and visions recent review. I actually bought this player for 2 channel music playback and love it.

Hi Tim: Yes it has analog stereo output for RCA connectprs. I cannot tell you about the quality of the sound from them because I haven't used those outputs. It is a great sounding stereo CD Player for me. Again I don't use those outputs. I use the XLR outputs for the stereo CD. I hope this helps. Arnold
