The Panasonic DP-UB9000P1K's incredible build quality contributes to its remarkable picture and sound quality.

The 4K Blu-ray player for videophiles and audiophiles

Call this a slight re-tooling of Panasonic's DP-UB9000 4K Blu-ray player — and our best audiophile Blu-ray player of 2023. This heavy-duty machine boasts the best picture quality available today for your 4K TV or 4K projector, thanks to Panasonic's advanced video processing and flexible adjustments. You'll get the most out of your 4K Blu-ray discs and upconverted 1080p discs.

And the internal audio circuitry is still top-shelf. Panasonic has updated the built-in digital-to-audio converters to high-grade ESS Sabre DAC chips, so you won't skip a beat when playing your CD collection or high-resolution music files.

Getting the best HDR picture quality

A big part of why 4K Blu-ray and streamed 4K content looks so lifelike is HDR — High Dynamic Range. It can provide a much wider range of contrast and colors than HDTVs ever could. But while all current 4K TVs can accept HDR-enhanced signals, many can't display the full potential of HDR due to their limited peak brightness.

It comes down to "nits"...

A TV's brightness is measured in "nits." Before TVs had HDR, typical peak brightness was around 250-300 nits, and most TV shows and movies were mastered at 100 nits. By comparison, today's OLED and midrange LED-LCD 4K TVs produce peaks of 700-1000 nits, and a handful of the brightest LED TVs can hit peaks of 1200-1500 nits. Meanwhile, 4K/HDR content is mastered at levels up to 4000 nits — way beyond the capability of any consumer 4K TV.

...and tone mapping

So how do you display 4000-nit content on a TV capable of only 25% of that brightness level? Tone mapping. This process helps a TV properly display content with higher peak brightness than the TV was designed to support. There's a lot of variation in the way tone mapping works from one TV maker to another, and what often happens on high-brightness material is the extreme highlights are "clipped," resulting in a "blown out" look that obscures detail.

Panasonic has developed some unique menu controls that make it easy to improve the look of HDR-enhanced content on your 4K TV. For example, you can choose from several tone-mapping options that are customized for different TV or projector brightness levels: OLED, High Luminance Projector, Basic Luminance Projector, Super High Luminance LCD, Middle/High Luminance LCD, and Basic Luminance LCD.

Selecting the appropriate setting for your display should provide better-looking HDR picture quality with more visible fine detail in bright and dark areas of the screen.

You can further fine-tune HDR performance by adjusting brightness based on the light level in your room. These picture adjustments work whether you're watching a UHD Blu-ray disc or 4K streamed content using the player's built-in apps.

Sound that keeps you riveted

Panasonic didn't forget about the sound — all the top movie formats are supported. There's built-in processing for the most common flavors of Dolby and DTS surround, and you can send three-dimensional audio formats like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X to a compatible receiver via HDMI. When it comes to music, the player delivers rich, detailed sound for your CDs, and its high-performance ESS DAC can handle high-res PCM and DSD audio files.

Panasonic paid a lot of attention to the construction of this player, for better sound with hi-fi home theater and stereo systems. This is one of the very few Blu-ray players you'll find with a vibration-reducing metal chassis, and the disc drive is rock solid. Panasonic's engineers separated the power for the audio DAC and analog output circuit, greatly reducing noise generated by the optical drive and video signal processing.

The DP-UB9000P1K's versatile design includes a 7.1-channel set of RCA outputs for getting great surround sound even when connecting to A/V receivers that lack HDMI.

Ultra HD 4K Playback & Upscaling: The Panasonic DP-UB9000P1K supports 4K(60Hz) video playback with 4x the resolution of full 1080p HD. Its newly developed 4K engine delivers incredibly life-like images with a level of detail and clarity like you've never seen before. The player will even upscale your favorite high-definition (1080i/1080p) content to 4K Ultra-HD (3,840 x 2,160). The Panasonic DP-UB9000P1K garners UHD Alliance's ULTRA HD PREMIUM logo which identifies products and services that meet or exceed strict performance levels for 4K resolution, high dynamic range (HDR), and wide color spectrum.

Note: This unit does not contain any analog video outputs.

HCX Processor: Panasonic's powerful HCX processor (Hollywood Cinema Experience) delivers precise chroma and HDR processing for optimal brightness, color and detail in all your 4K/HDR content. The HCX processor delivers life-like depth effects and vivid colors through high contrast between dark and light areas, as well as displays sharp and beautiful images enhanced by smooth motion. It also provides HDR-to-SDR conversion for your non-HDR television.

  • Chroma Processing: The unit supports up to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling for full color data rendering of ultra high-definition video. This allows the Ultra HD Blu-ray player to offer twice the color range of existing conventional Blu-ray players and 64x higher color expressions, surpassing the digital cinema standard. With 4K high precision processing and upscaling, 4K (4:2.0) image color signals are interpolated into 4K (4:4:4) by an advanced chroma process to give you full, natural textures and depth. As a result, you'll get to enjoy realistic picture quality like never before.
  • HDR Optimizer: The HDR Optimizer will display highly bright scenes with smooth gradations based on the luminance information (static metadata) of your playback content. It can even improve high-brightness imaging on HDR-compatible TVs with low peak brightness. Select which type of HDR compatible TV you own - OLED, High Luminance Projector, Basic Luminance Projector, Super High Luminance LCD, Middle/High Luminance LCD, and Basic Luminance LCD.
  • HDR-to-SDR: When this unit is connected to a TV that does not support HDR (High Dynamic Range), the player's HDR video output is converted to a SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) video signal. You then can manually adjust the dynamic range of the image to produce the best brightness and contrast.

HDR Video: The DP-UB9000P1K supports four HDR (High Dynamic Range) formats; including HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG). HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, bringing greater contrast & wider color spectrum to the screen. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. Previously hidden areas of dark shadow and sunlight are now full of clarity and detail.

  • HDR10: HDR10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
  • HDR10+: HDR10+ is a a new open standard that leverages dynamic metadata to produce enhanced contrast and colors. The HDR10+ technology incorporates dynamic metadata that allows the player to adjust brightness levels on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame basis. By applying individualized tone mapping to each scene, HDR10+ delivers an incredible viewing experience. The picture quality offers an enhanced visual experience with more detailed expressions, brighter shadow areas and more accurate color renderings that stay true to the creator's original intent.
  • Dolby Vision: Dolby Vision adjusts brightness, color, and contrast automatically for each scene. It supports 12-bit color and 10,000 nits. Dynamic metadata carries information that maps every image to your TV's display capabilities, so you see more of what the content creator intended. As a result, Dolby Vision delivers incredible brightness, color, contrast, detail, and dimensionality.
  • HLG: HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.

Note: Please use a premium high speed HDMI cable with 18 Gbps and above to view Ultra HD and HDR content.

24p Output: Movies are typically recorded on film with a frame rate of 24 frames per second. When a movie is transferred to Blu-ray Disc at 24 frames per second, the DP-UB9000P1K will output that signal to the TV (if the TV will accept the 1080p/24 format) with no need for conversion.

3D-Ready: The Panasonic DP-UB9000P1K UHD Blu-ray disc player supports 3D playback of high-definition (up to 1080p) 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses.

Deep Color & x.v. Color: The Panasonic UHD Blu-ray player supports a color depth of up to 12 bits. Connecting the player and a TV that supports Deep Color via HDMI allows more accurate color reproduction than when connecting it to a TV that does not support Deep Color. This player can also playback AVCHD discs using the x.v.Color format. x.v.Color offers a wider color range than normal DVD camcorder discs.

Picture Adjustments: You can make picture adjustments to tailor the image quality to your type of content and preference. You can choose between a variety of Picture Types (Normal / Cinema / Fine Cinema / Retro Cinema / Animation / Live), based on what type of movie or TV show you are watching. You can fine-tune the picture image by manually adjusting the picture's Brightness, Contrast, Color Saturation, Hue, Sharpness. In addition, you can turn on Noise Reduction (Block / Random / Mosquito) to reduce unnecessary noise in videos.

Audio Section

Reference Quality Construction: The Panasonic DP-U9000P-K Ultra HD Blu-ray player offers reference quality construction for audiophile-grade sound that is free from interference, vibration, and noise.

  • AC/DC Conversion Circuit: The main power supply, which provides power to the optical drive and video signal processing circuits, generates a variety of low-to-high frequency noises. These occur, for example, when driving the motor during disc playback, accessing memory, and communicating between peripheral circuits. By separating the power for the audio D/A converter and analog output circuit at their origin, the noise effects are greatly reduced. In addition, soft switching control lowers the noise of the power supply itself.
  • 10-Line Isolated DC Regulator Circuit: The digital and analog power supplies for the D/A converter are isolated. The analog channel is further separated into 2 channels and 7.1 channels, and for the 2-chanel output, the reference voltage of the left and right channels is isolated, making a 10-line regulator circuit and reducing mutual effects to improve distortion. Moreover, high-quality audio grade electrolytic capacitors are used in the analog channel to minimize noise.
  • Low-Noise Op Amps & Audio-Grade Electrolytic Capacitors: The analog circuits for 2 channel and 7.1 channel output are mounted onto special glass-epoxy circuit boards. Together with the use of quality components, such as low-noise operational amplifiers and audio grade electrolytic capacitors, a totally balanced signal transmission is achieved by using differential circuits all the way from the D/A converter output to the XLR output terminal.

THX Certified Sound: This THX certified Ultra HD Blu-ray player achieves lifelike surround sound the way the director intended. Now, you can enjoy movies in your own home with cinema-level quality.

Four 32-bit/192kHz ESS DACs with Upsampling: The Panasonic DP-UB900P1K utilizes four 32-bit/192kHz ESS DACS (digital-to-analog converters) that supports high resolution audio (up to 32-bit/384kHz) to reveal both rich and delicate tone in music and vocals. This audiophile-grade 4-DAC configuration can even upsample low res music files up to 32-bit/192kHz (when the Voice Guidance feature is activated, the maximum upsampling frequency will be fixed at 48kHz). Supported Hi-Res music files include ALAC/FLAC (up to 32-bit/192kHz), AIFF/WAV (up to 32-bit/384kHz), and DSD (up to 11.2MHz).

HDMI Low Clock Jitter Process: The DP-UB9000P1K utilizes a HDMI Low Clock Jitter Process that faithfully reproduces the original sound recorded onto your UltraHD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs, and DVDs for exceptional audio performance.

Convenience & Remote Features

Quick Start: Quick Start speeds up the load time on movies, so discs start faster after they're inserted into the UHD Blu-ray player. The Panasonic Ultra-HD Blu-ray player has a start-up time of approximately 4.7 seconds in Quick Start mode (24.3 seconds in normal mode). In Quick Start mode, it takes approximately 30.1 seconds for a Blu-ray disc to begin playback (35.7 seconds in normal mode).

Note: The Start Up/Playback Time tests were started with the UHD Blu-ray player initially turned off and in standby mode. The Start Up Time test was stopped when the player's Home Menu screen appeared. The Playback Time test was stopped when the UHD Blu-ray disc began playback.

Remote Control: The included IR remote control provides full wireless operation of the Ultra HD Blu-ray player. You can also program the included IR remote to operate basic functions of select brands of TVs (including Panasonic, LG, Samsung, Sony, and Vizio). Programmable control functions include Power On/Off, Volume Up/Down, and AV Input.

HDMI CEC (VIERA Link): HDMI CEC (VIERA Link) links select operations of this player with other VIERA Link and HDMI CEC compatible devices that are connected to one another via HDMI. Linked operations included Auto Power On/Off and Auto Input Switching. When you power your HDMI-connected TV on or off, the player will also turn on or off. In addition, when you begin playback on the UHD Blu-ray player, your HDMI-connected TV will automatically switch to the appropriate input.

Photo Slideshow: Play a slideshow of photos (JPEG files only) with music (MP3 or FLAC music files) in the background from a USB MSC device or DLNA network device.

Parental Control: The Panasonic offers Parental Control settings to limit Ultra HD BD, BD, and DVD content according to the age of the users. You can also block access to network and internet content.

Voice Guidance: Voice Guidance reads aloud various on-screen information, such as menu items, explanatory text, and currently-selected items. When Voice Guidance is activated, the player is restricted to PCM and only offers 48kHz upsampling.

Q
Hello, I just bought the Panasonic dp-ub820, but I'm considering swapping it for this model. While I'm looking for the best video, I'm mostly concerned about audio. I'm a musician and stream prime music and premium YouTube daily. I have the marantz amp10 and I'm getting the marantz av10 preamp this week, and currently have a 5.2.2 setup.. I want to know if it's worth getting this model instead? I like the idea of the xlr outputs. How does this connect, is there a separate connection for video to my preamp then?? Thanks guys, you are the best!

Greetings Phil, and thank you for your question. The XLR outs are just 2 channel, mainly to go to a dedicated 2 channel preamp, or 2 channel integrated amp. There are not XLR outs for all channels. In this case to do effectively 5.2.2 just use the HDMI, and let the AV10 do the decoding. The video difference from the UB820 would be a mild step up, but mainly the 9000 is more stable, of course Aluminum front and side panels for vibration reduction, and the better DACs if you were using the alanog outs. In the case of the AV10 then, your not going to be using the anaolg out on the UB9000. If you would be connecting a 2 channel integrated as well, then you would be using the DAC for music only, and the XLRs as well.

Q
What's the correct way to utilize the DACs for the best sound out of this? HDMI-out (audio only) to my Anthem MRX 720 (HDMI-IN) or do coax-out to coax-in? If I do HDMI then that bypasses the DACs for movie audio right? I have a 3.1 setup.
mous3y  Jun 03, 2023
1 answer
A
Using any output aside from the RCA or XLR outputs from the DP-UB9000P1K will bypass its internal DACs. It would not be possible to input 3.1 channels into your MRX 720 via RCA because the receiver's RCA inputs are only 2-channel stereo.

Q
Can the analog RCA jacks be used as a line level output to a headphone amplifier?
lanny  Feb 13, 2023
1 answer
A
You can use an external headphone amplifier in 2-channel mode with the Panasonic DP-UB9000P1K 4K ultra HD player, Lanny. You cannot output sound via HDMI at the same time however, you need to select audio output to "off" in the advanced settings on the Panasonic's menu disabling audio output over HDMI to enjoy the sound over your headphones. If your plan is to watch late night without disturbing others, it's a solid one!

Q
What's the difference between the Panasonic DP-UB9000 and the DP-UB9000P1K ? Like, what's the "P1K" stand for?
david  Dec 27, 2022
1 answer
A
The DP-UB9000 is an older, discontinued model David. The DP-IB9000P1K has updated the built-in digital-to-audio converters to high-grade ESS Sabre DAC chips for better sound quality over the DP-UB9000. All of the other core features folks love are still onboard as well, this is a slight improvement over the older model!

Q
Does the Panasonic DP-UB9000 have "Subtitle shift", where you can shift the subtitles either up into the picture frame or down into the black bar area? If not what DVD player has this feature?
thomas  Dec 05, 2022

A
This does have a setting for adjusting the position of subtitles. Panasonic does not use the term "subtitle shift," but subtitle positioning can be adjusted in the settings.

Q
Is this player compatible with PAL format discs?
brian  Dec 04, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Brian, and thank you for your question. The PAL format is more widely used in Europe which is a different region code that would be found on players sold in the U.S. There was no mention of this player being able to play a PAL formatted disc.

Q
When does the HDMI AUDIO OUT port need to be connected? Connecting the HDMI AUDIO OUT then requires the HDMI VIDEO OUT to go directly to the TV (bypassing my Yamaha receiver). Consequently, I have to give up the video processing the receiver can provide and the receiver volume control indicator cannot reach the TV since that path is gone. The HDMI AUDIO OUT connection can provide "High-Resolution Audio" but I'm not clear on when that would be an advantage. What sources provide high-resolution audio?
david k  Dec 02, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings David, and thank you for your questions. The main reason for the second HDMI out is for older receivers that are not compatible with 4K content. If this Bluray player were connected to it, the video would not come out to the 4K TV. So, what's the fix for those older non compatible 4K receivers? A second audio only HDMI output. If your receiver is HDCP 2.2 4K capable, you don't use the second HDMI output.

Q
How resistant is the Panasonic DP-UB9000P1K 4K player to stuttering and freezing when playing the larger capacity "triple layer" 4K disks? I have an Oppo UDP-205 and as my collection has grown (over 300 4K films and 3,000+ standard Blu-rays) I've experienced numerous skips, stutters and freezes during the last third of longer films using the 100 GB, triple-layer 4K disks. I would like to hear from someone with a comparable library of 4K films who also owns the Panasonic DP-UB9000P1K. I've never had a single playback issue with the standard Blu-ray format, so this bothers me quite a bit. I'm liking 4K physical media a lot less these days.

I haven't had any issues with my current 4 k collection playing in the UB9000 player, however I have had a few disc like Spider Man Homecoming freezing and pixelating due to a defective disc. The replacement disc played perfect. The Lord of the Rings 4 k collection played without issues . Check your disc it is doesn't play properly. I notice 4 k disc seem to have a few issues from what I have read but I haven't had any issues. The Some Like It Hot had an issue with playing Dolby vision with flickering but after I updated my firmware it played just fine. Hopefully this helps you.I love my player and I am completely satisfied with it and I am very picky when it comes to my equipment!!

My library is quite a bit smaller than yours (2000 BR/70 4K), but I am using an Oppo 95 as well as the Panasonic, so I can give you a relative comparison. The Panasonic has been handling the 4K discs extremely well, but I try to stay away from using the PAUSE button, which sometimes stirs up a skipping problem on a few discs. Other than that, I would say that the Panasonic has been, for me, an excellent machine to enjoy the upgrade in picture & sound quality that 4K provides. Also, occasionally, my Oppo 95 will have a problem with a blu-ray, but the Panasonic handles the same disc just fine ... so, it's nice to have 2 machines for troubleshooting etc :-) Good luck ....
richard  Nov 04, 2022

Greetings. My 4K library is more than twice the size of yours so I have a lot of experience with these discs. With the UB9000P1 I have yet to have a single skip, stutter, stall on any 4K disc unless it was due to the disc needing cleaning. I have both the Panasonic 9000P1 and the 820. Both are superb in every way. Best of luck.

I had a very similar issue with this unit when I first purchased this, where 1080p discs would frequently freeze during playback and some 4k titles. Typically the film would freeze about 2/3rds of the way through the running time. It turned out that this was some kind of manufacturing defect. I had to send in the unit to Panasonic for repair. Since it came back I have had no issues whatsoever with 4k or blu-ray playback. I think I have about 50 4k titles and 200+ 1080p blu-ray discs for comparison.

Has anyone noticed an improvement in the sound of movies with this unit over others you have had? I have no complaints with 4K picture on my existing player but one never knows if they are being short changed on the dolby. Running 7.2.4 Thanks

I am currently a 5.1.4 and I definitely notice a difference in audio quality .The UB 820 is great but I have better audio or with the UB 9000 .I get more volume out of the 9000 when both are set at the same volume level. I know because I have them both setup in my system and alternate playing my 4 k Blu ray disc and Blu ray discs.

I haven't heard any other 4K players, but the sound on this player outdoes the sound quality of my Oppo BDP-95 Blu-ray player (second to none in the Blu-ray format). I believe the sound quality of the Panasonic UB-9000 to be State of the Art in the 4K format at this time.
richard  Sep 06, 2022
A
First and foremost this is an excellent unit, well worth the money. Build quality is top notch. Regarding your question about sound, running this and an older Oppo unit.. They both sound the same to me, sending the same audio format. The processor decoding Dolby Atmos is where the sound magic happens. I hope that helps you friend.
michael  Sep 06, 2022

Greetings Glenn, and thank you for your question. What we cannot do here is side by side comparisons. The Panasonic DP-UB9000P is using all top shelf components and circuitry inside. Knowing that, performance on video, as well as audio would be a step up from any other player we currently offer.

Q
Does this player have an eARC connection? Does any UHD player?
robbyrocketz  Jun 28, 2022
1 answer
A
You won't find a specific eARC connection on this Panasonic DP-UB9000P1K, Robert. If you are connecting directly to a 4k TV you would use the Audio/Video out. That does support Dolby Atmos and other 7 channel content. Since these are designed to be used with a home theater receiver/preamp or plugged in directly to a screen, you won't find that specific "eARC" descriptor as there is no two way communication (audio streaming back, like when an AVR/Soundbar is connected to a smart TV with eARC). You can connect this Panasonic to practically any setup, and it's in my opinion one of the best 4K Ultra player's available. I hope this helps!

If I wanted to connect two Klipsch RP-8060FA and a center speaker and sub would I need an amplifier connecting this blu ray player? Or will they run fine directly out of the connections on the back? New to surround- thanks.

The UB-9000 needs to be connected to a preamplifier or surround sound receiver via the HDMI outputs, or with its analog outputs (provided that your preamp/receiver has analog inputs).
richard  Jan 31, 2022

For sure you need a reciever/amplifier. The connections your referring to if memory serves are for powered speakers.

I believe they are referring to blu ray disc's when they say "HD DVD" mainly because there is no HD DVD technically. I can tell you this player definitely plays blu rays and I'm sure DVD as well. I only have one DVD left but I have for sure played blu rays many times. This player in my opinion really shines with 4k blu rays.

So I have a samsung dvd player which I bought to use with my old stereo receiver. That unit is finally starting to get old and I wonder if this would work as a replacement. I see it has stereo output so that is good. I want a unit that will play my concert dvds and regular dvds. I do not have a lot of blue ray discs. And I would like to use Netflix and Amazon but I have a fairly old Vizio Tv. Will this unit work with the older equipment I have?

The UB9000 has RCA & balanced stereo outputs, & would make a wonderful CD/DVD player for your system. It also has built-in apps for Netflix & Amazon.
richard  Apr 05, 2022
A
The UB9000 will play all your DVDs & upconvert them to the native resolution of your TV. The Netfix/Amazon apps should work fine if your Vizio TV is set to receive them. You might want to invest in a new 4K TV, so that you can truly enjoy this machine's capabilities :-)
richard  Nov 05, 2021
A
Yes, but you are going to have to make some adjustments to the settings. You can even run XLR outs in true stereo from this unit. If you do decide to go this route, I would suggest contacting Crutchfield technical support or panasonic tech support for analog set up options.
