Clean Sound, no bass punch.
Omar from Miami, FL on 7/11/2025
2005 Toyota Tacoma
The JL Audio RD900/5 is a clean sounding amplifier. Setting the input/output gain limits is much improved. However, I find the amp lacks SPL (sound pressure level) as compared to JL's older models like the Slash line (JL 500/5). With a retuning of my DSP (digital sound processor) I was able to accomplish comparable sound quality. The quality of the sound is clean and loud, but I find it lacks that SPL bass punch I had grown accustomed to with the JL product line.
Pros: Clean Sound Quality Ease in Setting Input/Output Limits Loud Improved cable connections (power/speakers)
Cons: Lacks Sound Pressure Level (SPL)

Does exactly what it's supposed to do
Crutchfield customer from KANSAS CITY, MO on 1/8/2025
I've replaced the Bose system in my '03 Silverado extended cab with this amp and it's working just fine. I'm powering a set of Infinity reference door speakers (components in front and coax in the back doors) with a JL W3v3 sub (6.5 inch 150 watts rms @4ohms) in the center console and it works great! It's a HUGE step up from the Bose system in terms of both clarity and volume. One gripe I have (that I also have with many other amps) is the set screws are significantly smaller than the rest of the wire connection terminal, so unless you prep your speaker wires with a significant amount of solder, you only may be clamping on a couple strands of wire rather than clamping on all the wire strands, Even though that's normal practice, it gets a star knocked off for that. It would also have been nice to have some better mounting options. As it stands, I've used some wood screws to screw it onto a piece of plywood that I've epoxied to the back wall of my cab. Otherwise, it performs perfectly and is 100% stealthily mounted behind my rear seat with 4 gauge running under the sill plate, through the firewall, and straight to the battery with a ground attached to a seat bolt. With the exception of the aftermarket radio and tweeters in the A-pillars, the build is entirely invisible and sounds MILES better than the stock Bose system. It won't pound your chest with the single W3v3 sub, but the amp could easily power a pair of 10's under the back seat should someone want to go t

At long last a quality 5ch

I've always wanted something jl and a five channel Amp. So I killed 2 birds, here. I'm using it to add 6 or 8 additional speakers in a diy box, to my scion TC. My scion has the rare radio with rcas on back and with this even the original car speakers not connected, seemed to improve. So far I have 1 pair of infinity 6-1/2s connected. It is a big noticeable difference. Good bass and great voices on pumpkins 'tonight '.My birthday is next month so I'm just getting a pair every check.
Pros: Lovely Amp, great sound
Cons: New rcas connected a little loose on this unit.

If only...
Sergio from Strasburg, CO on 5/3/2024
Don't get me wrong, THIS IS A GOOD AMP. The amp build and sound quality are amazing although total value I think could be better. For example, the level control knob, I feel, should be included especially for that price. I do also wish the level control knob could be selectable for different channels instead of just for the subwoofer. My amp also doesn't include mounting hardware or anything of that sort which is kind of a disappointment. If only it had that, this amp would be so unstoppable.
Pros: High and low level input capabilities, Good build quality, Sounds great and can push a lot of power for its size.
Cons: No control knob, no mounting hardware

2015 Corolla - Compact and Plenty of Power
RJ from Upper Marlboro, MD on 4/25/2024
Awesome product! Upgraded from a Rockford mono block (sub amp) and an old school JVC Digifine 4-channel amp (from the late 90s, for the main channels). I use this JL amp to power the Infinity Kappa 603CFs in the front, Alpine coaxial rears, and 2 old-school 10" JVC Digifine subs (bridged to 2-ohms) from the late 90s (my advisor Rucker knows all about em!!! :) ). This amp makes the main channels sing, and definitely puts out plenty of power to make my old subs thump. No issues at all with setup, very clean layout, and I've gained trunk space back. I'm impressed with the ease of use, and power output in such a small amp. I'm not looking to be the SPL champ; I'm in it for the sound quality, and when the urge calls to put the windows down and crank it - this amp has delivered. I love the ease of setup and tuning with the input sensitivity, built-in indicator lights. I'm very satisfied with this amp (and my advisor Rucker), and would recommend them to all.
Pros: -Small Footprint; 1 Amp for a 5-channel System -Plenty of Power -Ease of Setup and Tuning -Clean Layout and Construction
Cons: -Be careful when wiring up the sub outputs, as the pattern changes (++ - -), if not paying attention, from what the main channels (+ -, + -) are labeled as.

JL Audio amp ..will not disappoint
Michael from Pearl City, HI on 1/17/2024
2023 Toyota 4Runner
This is why i love JL Audio...Amazing!!! Going into this audio project I had a few requirements: clean power, adequate power, and buy once /cry once. I wanted a clear, accurate system with just enough bottom end. I experienced JL Audio many decades ago....they did not disappoint then...and I knew they would be my go to amp and sub components. I have this connected to a factory head unit with the JL Audio speaker-to-RCA convertors (high level input) powering Focal 6.5' components (60hz hi pass), Focal 5.25" Coaxial (80hz hi pass), and a JL Audio HO110RG-W3v3. Going into this...I though I would keep this at a moderate listening level (10-15) ...and just enjoy an great sounding system on my commutes.....haha... that lasted for about 5 minutes...then cranked the volume to 20...30.....40. ooh yes, this amp provided it easily....and stayed nice and cool. If your looking to update your factory system with better speakers and Sub....this should definitely be on your radar.
Pros: - Build quality - Price - Clean power - Connections - High level input -
Cons: None

Makes my speakers sound crystal clear.
Alex from Sacramento ca on 1/14/2024
I've had this amp for 3 years and I can say I finally got to push it by playing my system full blast for more than 5 hours in my backyard a few weeks ago. Only reason I had to turn it down was because I got the cops called on me for noise disturbances. The cops even complimented on how clear and loud it sounded and how they were able to hear me down the street. I'm using it to run some kicker 6.5 QS and some pro tweeters, kicker comps 10s the 07 models in a sealed box in my Chevy single cab obs. This JL Rd makes my speakers sound crystal clear and pumps up deep and impactful bass. I was hesitant about running a class D for my mids/highs since I had run other class D amps and just didn't like how they sounded. The clipping light is useful and convenient. Along with all the connectors in one side. I would definitely buy this amp again.
Pros: Sound quality. Convenient and small enough to fit in tight spots. Clipping light.feels like a well built amp. I also like the way it looks with the simple sleek design.
Cons: Other than price but then again you get what you pay for with this amp.

I have this amp in my '85 Bronco powering 4 Polk Audio DB series speakers, and a Kicker 12" Comp sub with 12" passive radiator in a downfire enclosure. I'm not one to write reviews but I felt compelled to help someone based on my experience. Started with a kicker 5 channel, the. Rockford P1000X5. They both got extremely hot during normal operation. Tested with a temp gun 140-150 degrees. Because they are class A/B combined with D. Old technology. Mind you two different Crutchfield reps recommended me these amps until I spoke with a Crutchfield installer who said go full class D and it won't get hot. Well he was right. This amp barely gets warm compared to those amps. Wish I would've known this sooner. Class D and JL for the win !

Crutchfield includes vehicle specific directions for install so it was less confusing to do my own install. Powering dash 3 1/2's, door 6x9's and rear door 6.5's along with a single 10" sub. Sounds awesome. I didn't want something to rattle the license plate off more of a good solid sound and I have achieved that goal. It's plenty loud in fact alot louder than I will ever play it. What I like about it is its crystal clear and the bass is tight and solid.
Pros: Powers my entire system without having to have multiple amplifiers. Great clean, tight sound.

Let me save you time and money. If you are thinking about getting this amp do not hesitate. I've been through several amps in the last 6 months and this has everything you would want. I listen to a wide variety of music and this amp delivers clean, quality and true reproduction from whatever source you use. I've had the Pioneer DX975, Kicker 44KXA8005, Rockford Fosgate T1000X5ad and a Boss PV3700. Nothing comes close to the JL Audio. Easy install in a nice, clean, compact package. There is no need for a subwoofer volume control because it's not amplifying garbage frequencies. Everything sits right where it's supposed to. I can't say enough how great this amp sounds.
Pros: Easy Install Compact Excellent Sound Quality Under Rated Power Listing 1 Allen Key for all terminals

Very satisfied with the amp so far. Set up was fairly easy and the compact size worked nicely with my 2001 Ram 1500 under the rear seat. I was able to set gains with the test tones from JL Audio's website before I hooked up the speakers. The clipping LED's were very handy in doing this and getting the gains set to a safe level that would prevent clipping or distortion. i currently have this amp connected to 4 coaxial speakers (Kenwood KFC-174's) and a JL Audio 12in Stealthbox. More than adequate power for my listening needs. Huge improvement over the sound coming from my Pioneer MVH-S522BS.
Pros: Clipping LED's for set up. Good connections.

Cons: Makes me want to buy a new head unit to see just what this amp is capable of!

Easy installation
Franklin from Atlanta, GA on 4/27/2018
Easy installation and sleek design. Versatile amp. I'm using this for 2 front speakers and the sub. With the clipping indicator gives me reassurance that I'm not exceeding its limits. Not 5 stars because I had to use a different Allen wrench than the provided one for a few screws.

JL Audio RD900/5
James from Fresno, CA on 4/1/2018
This is running some Hertz Energy components and an Audiofrog 12" sub. My goal is sound quality rather than volume, but this can still play my system way louder than I want to listen to. I'm a big fan of the clip indicator lights and really like how easy the controls are to access from the face of the unit because it makes adjustments really easy. One of the issues with 5-channels is they often don't put out much power on the sub channel. One of the reasons this amp really appealed to me (other than being highly rated in listening reviews) is the 500 watts at 2 ohms. If you're looking for a 5-channel, def give this some consideration.

Clean design and smooth sounding amplifier
Andy from San Diego, CA on 3/23/2018
So far so good, I was hesitant at buying any other amp other than JL. In the past I've owned Slash, and XD series amps and was always happy with the sound quality. I have only recently heard of the RD series amps. I'm driving Hertz Audio Coax all around and a Pioneer prefab sub box (10") in my 2016 Nissan Murano. The amp runs CLEAN and COOL. Very quiet turn on and turn off, excellent installation location for all adjustments and input wires. Simple and clean look which makes the amp even more astonishing. It reminds me of German Engineering for some reason. Give it a test drive, definitely very happy with my purchase. I was going to get the 400/4 but am really glad I spent the extra money and got the sub outputs. Signal sensing didn't work all that well, only detected my turn on a couple of times. Spoke with JL and they obviously recommended hardwired Remote. So I did and it all worked fine after that.
Pros: Compact, clean sound, cool operation, ease of use
Cons: Signal sensing didn't work all that well. Wish they had included the sine wave CD for the clip sensing feature, you have to go download it from their website.

Great power for the size!
Ignacio Chavez from Coral Gables, FL on 9/4/2017
This amp delivers enough power for a complete 4 satellites + 1 subwoofer. I've got it hooked up with JL C3 525 front, JL C2 525 back and a 10W3-D4 JL sub in the trunk on my 2017 Fiat 500. I have to say, the sound is crisp and clean on mids and highs. The lower bass lines and beats sound good, but sometimes it feels like missing more bass. The size is perfect if you have little room like i did. The looks is very sober, clean and elegant overall. The clipping setup is awesome! works perfectly. Overall a very good amp!
Pros: Size and nr. of channels
Cons: The bass channel lacks bass power sometimes

engine noise ruins my entire experieince
rodney from Winter Springs, FL on 8/8/2017
After reading other reviews i must be the unlucky guy. In short the amp does everything it says it will do and i love the built in lights to help setup the amp properly to avoid clipping. My 2 star rating is completely based on the issue of engine noise that has proven impossible to resolve . I replaced my JL XD700 5v2 with this. So as you might guess it was pretty much plug and play. Same rca's, same power/ground wiring, NOT the same performance. I work at a Toyota Dealership and always have my gear professionally installed (work perks). they've gone through a number of different exercises to try to isolate and irradiate the engine noise to no avail. I'm so unhappy with this purchase. Its been explained to me by the Crutchfield tech support team that just because one amp worked fine with my existing setup doesn't mean another one will but i don't really understand how that doesn't point directly to a shortcoming of the new amp.
Pros: decent power decent price
Cons: quality of product??? see my review for more info

Sounds Great
charles from Memphis, TN on 3/23/2017
Ok I have had this amp hooked for about 2 days now and I am not disappointed! I do have a sound processor hooked up as well (kicker front row) but everything sounds loud and clear. The highs are crystal clear and the lows are not too bad either. It hits hard and does not use much power at all and does not get too hot. I would recommend this amp because it has more than enough power to run you entire system. 500 watts to the subs is more than enough me. So if you need more than that this might not be the amp for you.
Pros: Small, Powerful and sounds great.
Cons: Do not really like the cover plate because you have to remove it if you need to make adjustments to the amp.

Loud and clear mids/highs sub channel so-so
Jason from St. Louis on 3/18/2017
Crystal clear on the mids and highs but the sub channel is a little underwhelming. I have it pushing two 10W1V3 4ohm subs and it pushes them ok, but not as well as the Rockford Prime 500/1 I was running on them with before.
Pros: Crystal clear mids and highs, super loud
Cons: I think the sub channel power is overrated

JL Audio RD900/5
Kevin G from Shallotte, NC on 11/20/2016
Was skeptical at JL's new amp lineup, but figured I'd roll the dice and see what happens. Ended up re-doing my amplifier setup in my Acura RSX. Went from a 4 channel & mono channel sub amps, down to a single 5 channel. My setup is JL XR 6.5" components, C2 6.5"s, 10W6V2, 4 gauge power wire and monster cable RCAs. The sizing of the amp is truly amazing of how things have progressed in the car audio world. This 5 channel is almost as big as the 4 channel that I replaced which was an audiophile, not a big name brand amp. First and foremost - the sound: Not sure if it was me, but this amp made my speakers come to life. Not only with power like my old setup, but clarity. If you are worried that this amp isn't going to good enough for your audiophile expectations - have no fear, this amp is great and at almost half the price of JL's more premium lineup. I would definitely recommend this amp to anyone, especially if you are on a tight budget. Don't let the RD series fool you, its't going to be tough to decipher between the XD/HD sound quality to the naked ear.
Pros: - budget price - big power output -small size - quality build
Cons: -Doesn't look as good as HD/XD series amp lineup - Coverplate screws tough to lineup

JL Audio RD900/5
Marc from Gulfort, MS on 11/8/2016
I put this 5 channel amp in a 2000 Toyota Tacoma ext cab. Also and new receiver, 2 front door speakers, 2 rear speakers, and 10" JL Audio Sub. This Amp made my system complete. After adjusting to the Amp to the perfect sound for me. Good highs and Mids and just the right amount of base. Everything sounds great even turned up to loud for my ears. I'm up in my 40s like listening to; ole and new country, classic rock, pop rock, even some new pop. I have sons between 18 and 22 yrs old and now they want a 5 channel amp instead of there Mono signal channel amp only pushing there subs. I have played with electronics for 30 yrs. and this is a sweet amp
Pros: Awesome
Cons: None
