Convertible speaker system

Versatile speaker system for any space

JL Audio's Evolution C3 speaker systems allow you to choose the best configuration for great sound in your vehicle. Mount the woofers and tweeters separately, and a C3 component system will fill your car with incredibly detailed, rich, and crystal-clear music, perfectly positioned in your listening space. In vehicles with limited space, you can mount the C3 tweeter inside the woofer to create a full-range, coaxial speaker that still performs with breathtaking impact.

Advanced material construction leads to clean musical reproduction

The C3-650 component system uses a 6-1/2" mica-filled polypropylene woofer that covers the midrange and low frequencies strongly and accurately. A specially designed frame resists unwanted resonances, keeping your music free from interference. If you mount the tweeter separately, simply install a phase plug into the woofer and the sound will disperse smoothly throughout your vehicle.

Silk tweeters and versatile crossover networks

The C3 tweeters use ferrofluid cooling to handle extreme levels of high-frequency information without overheating. Mounted separately or coaxially, these 1" silk dome tweeters broadcast crisp musical detail evenly without harshness. Separate, outboard crossovers use premium components to direct the signal flow to your woofers and tweeters. You can select from three midrange settings and four levels of tweeter presence to match the speaker system to your listening environment.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Product Research

Woofers: The JL Audio Evolution C3-650 convertible component system includes woofers with injection-molded polymer frames, mineral filled polypropylene cones, rubber surrounds, ferrite magnets, and 1" voice coils with Kapton formers. In the center of each cone is a phase plug; the phase plug can be removed and the tweeter mounted in its place to create a coaxial speaker.

Tweeters: The 1" silk dome tweeters are Ferro fluid cooled and use neodymium magnets. Silk is lightweight and great for high frequency extension and efficiency. It is also designed for durability in the extreme automotive environment. Flush mount and surface mount housings are included, along with fixtures to coaxially mount the tweeters to the woofers.

Tweeter Dimensions:

Frame Diameter Cutout Diameter Mounting Height Mounting Depth
Flush Mount 2.134" 1.875" 0.25" 0.853"
Surface Mount 1.926" Screw holes only 0.981" Screw depth only

Coaxial Mounting: The tweeters can be mounted in the center of the woofers to create coaxial speakers. When the tweeters are mounted to the woofers the speaker is taller; the mounting height increases to 0.775", 0.575" for the tweeter protrusion.

Two-way Crossover System: The C3 component system utilizes a 2-way crossover system with Mylar capacitors and air-core inductors:

  • High Pass: second order (12 dB/octave slope); four tweeter level settings are selectable to compensate for mounting location or orientation; +2.0 dB, Reference, -2 dB, and -4 dB
  • Low Pass: first order (6 dB/octave slope)
  • Midrange Presence: there are three settings that affect the amplitude of the upper midrange response, designed to compensate for mounting location or orientation; choose High, Reference, or Low

Tweeter Protection: The crossover network has an electronic tweeter protection circuit built in; it monitors the current and disconnects the tweeter when it senses and overload. The circuit automatically resets once the overload is removed.

Crossover Wiring: The terminal strip will accept bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.32" wide (the included crimp-on spade connectors are 0.255" wide).

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 3.368"
  • Height: 1.415"
  • Depth: 4.739" (plus wire)

Connection Note: The C3 component system comes with no speaker wire. Instead, a number of spade connectors and quick slides are included in the hardware pack to be crimped onto speaker wire you provide.

Size Classification Note: Crutchfield has traditionally referred to this size speaker as a 6-3/4", while some manufacturers, including JL Audio, call it a 6-1/2". Please enter your vehicle information to confirm fit.

Power Handling: JL Audio publishes several power specifications for this speaker, 75 watts continuous power handling (RMS), 225 watts peak music power, and 25-150 watts recommended amplifier power (RMS). We've listed the conservative combination of 25-75 watts RMS in the specs table.

Can i use these without the crossovers in a 3 way active system?
steven  Dec 16, 2022
1 answer
That is a great question, Steven. If you have an active DSP or amp/crossover setup in place with bandpass frequencies for the woofer's you can use these without the included crossovers. If you are not using DSP or just have a traditional high-pass crossover on your amp(s) you will need to use the JL crossover.

I have 2 sets of jl c-3 650 should I run them with 2 jl rd 400/4 or 1?
jl reliant  Sep 06, 2022
1 answer
an single rd/400 will provide 74 watts RMS x4 into a 4-ohm load. That is an ideal power match for these speakers. A single amp will do perfectly.
thomas  Sep 06, 2022 (Staff)
Will these work as an upgrade to my existing speaker with my factory head unit in a 2020 GMC Acadia or is the minimum wattage too high?
richard  Mar 26, 2022

I think that this speaks need that little extra power to get out that nice sound . They will work but not as nice as they should sound . The power on this speaks is amazing with the proper power given to them . I running them with a 3 channel amp that I puro threw crutchfield. .
sergio feria  Mar 26, 2022
No. These speakers won't do well without an amplifier. If you're Acadia has premium audio and has a factory installed amplifier, it will work, depending on the wattage of the amp. It will do best with at least a 75 Watt amp.

How much modifying needs to be done for the tweeters to fit in the dashboard corner of an 8th gen civic - 06-10? Cruchfield says the tweeters are larger.

I have a audio control d-4.800 amp (125rms per chan). I plan to hook the jl audio c3 comp set up without the passive xover as an active setup to the d-4.800 amp. will this work? the set says recomended amp 25-150 watts rms.
dustin  Jan 04, 2022
2 answers
It can work, that's almost double the rms wattage of the JL Audio C3, Plenty of Headroom You just have to keep the Gain Settings Low for the Tweeters to avoid blowing them. If you want to get a separate DSP. Then I would suggest getting a Morel MPS 4.400 4 Channel Amplifier (4 X 70 Watts).
philip  Jan 05, 2022
125 watts RMS out of the amp should be plenty to push those c3-650s. You will definitely want to tune the system for your amp gain and xovers to match the speakers on each channel. Your proposed setup may actually be able to control the tweets a little better (vs the passive xover) with a separate gain on the woofers. I am using the passive xovers and use the head's eq to try to control the tweets and it struggles to maintain its separation at about 3/4 volume and higher.
chad  Jan 05, 2022
Are they loud enough to where my ears will hurt?
cole  May 24, 2021
1 answer
Yes. They will get loud and remain clear. They do not need to be overpowered to achieve it. I have the C3s powered with a Rockford Fosgate 750X5 rated for 50 Watts RMS x 4 @ 4ohms. But they're underrated. The certificate shows it's pushing about 64 watts X4. That makes the C3s plenty loud. Paired with them are C2 650s in the rear. And a JL Audio 10TW3-D4 in a ported box. With those speakers and power I cannot turn the volume up past 75% without discomfort.
john  Jul 25, 2021
Can these be flexed at 2 ohm's?
rob  Nov 29, 2020
1 answer
This component speaker has a 4 ohm impedance. The only way they can be used to create a 2 ohm load for an amp is to wire two component speakers in parallel to one amp channel.
jason  Dec 09, 2020 (Staff)
How do I know when a crossover is not working properly?
saul  Nov 11, 2020
1 answer
It depends on what you mean by "not working properly". If there are any open circuits in it, either the woofer or the tweeter will not be working at all. If there are any short circuits, it will not properly apply the high pass or low pass filters, and this could cause your tweeter to be damaged or blown. You should also know that the jumpers to set the tweeter level and the midrange level should be installed. If they are missing, it will behave as an open circuit.
kevin  Oct 19, 2021
can the c3-650 be wired in parallel with a jl 10005v ?
danny  Jun 01, 2020
1 answer
That amp is stable at 2 ohms so you could theoretically wire two pairs of those in parallel. If you want to discuss your overall system or ideas with one of our product advisors, you can connect for live advice here:

Are the crossovers in this kit considered active or passive?
david  Sep 19, 2019
3 answers
They are passive. Active crossovers are software filters that can be designed and edited in a digital signal processor (DSP)
kevin  Oct 19, 2021
They are passive crossovers. These speakers are fantastic! Just did a 11hr road trip today and worth every penny! Silk dome tweeter or nothing!
dana r  Sep 20, 2019
With the cross overs if I remember correctly it makes it an active and adjusts accordingly but I could be wrong and that not be the feature on this setup. Been awhile since I put them in the car but by far best bang for buck!

On your website says JL c3 650 won't fit my 2002 Toyota Camry LE front Door ? How about if I was to use them as a Coaxial should they fit
felix  Apr 20, 2019
1 answer
No the limiting factory on the fit is the mounting depth. The C3 is just a little bit too deep for the available space in the front doors of that 2002 Camry. You could fit the JL Audio C2 component

It says you can use them as a coaxial. Can you wire them without using the huge crossovers?? If so which terminals on the speaker get used?
jay  Nov 15, 2014
4 answers
The speakers can be mounted as coaxials, but they do not have a built in crossover. You have to use the external crossovers that cone in the box. They are higher quality than the small internal crossovers that come in cheaper coaxial speakers, and the sound clarity will be better.
kevin  Oct 19, 2021
Yes they can be used without the crossover but the tweeter and woofer are on separate terminals and must have wires ran to each one. IMO I wouldn't run it this way due to unwanted frequencies going to the woofer and tweeter. Also it could possibly change the ohms and cause problems for amplifiers or head units whichever is to be used.
john  Nov 20, 2014
I am using them as coaxial, but I am certainly using the crossovers. I want the flexibility, and I'm skeptical how the speakers would work without them. They are clearly part of the designed package. My expectation is that they provide protection for the speakers as well as controlling the sound. I'm driving the speakers with 900/5 amp and would not want to risk leaving the crossovers out, so I am making room for them. Each speaker has a pair of terminals, whether you connect them as component or coaxial. I download the installation manuals from the Crutchfield site before buying to better inform my buying choices, and that would probably clear up your question.
eugene  Nov 17, 2014
You have to use the crossovers.
