About the Sennheiser CX True Wireless

Wire-free "value" earbuds with premium sound

The sweat-proof Sennheiser CX True Wireless earbuds fit securely and deliver clear sound with depth and detail.
Wire-free "value" earbuds with premium sound
The Sennheiser CX True Wireless earbuds bring much to the table at a reasonable price. I've spent some time with these streamlined, sweat-proof earbuds and they include many of the features found in more expensive models. In fact, if you don't need active noise cancellation, there are few other compromises. And Sennheiser certainly didn't skimp on sound.
They've included their 7mm "TrueResponse" drivers — a simplified version of the dynamic drivers found in their top-of-the-line IE900 in-ear headphones. Music plays wirelessly via the newer Bluetooth 5.2 version, and the pairing process with my phone was seamless. There is no connecting wire between the two earbuds, and you can control music or calls by touch.
My listening impressions — well-rounded sound with precise imaging
While you shouldn't expect flagship-level performance from the CX True Wireless, I found the sound here a cut above most entry-level earbuds. They deliver Sennheiser's signature smooth highs, articulate mids, and satisfying bass. The soundstage is intimate rather than spread out, but there is plenty of breathing room between the different instruments, vocals, and other sounds. Everything sounded focused and cohesive with a well-defined sense of place.
This will be a very specific — somewhat obscure — example, but The Roots recently reissued their 1995 album Do You Want More?!!!??! which includes a track called "The Lesson pt. 1." It's a stripped-down hip-hop production that has beatboxer Rahzel simultaneously providing vocal percussion and part of the melody, which is overlaid with some instruments and female vocals. I've listened to this song in countless formats and listening setups over the years, from a dubbed cassette tape in the stereo of my old Dodge Raider to a CD bumping through my first tower speakers.
But streaming on Qobuz through these earbuds, I got an extra layer of dimensionality that I've never experienced. Again, it's not a large soundstage. But I could hear and feel the emphatic thump and rattle of Rahzel's beatbox dead center in my skull — as the vocals swirled from left to right "around" me. Meanwhile, the back and forth between Black Thought and Dice Raw, the two lead emcees, played out in front of me.
It's cliché for reviewers to say things like, "I heard this song again for the first time." But there is something cool about getting a new listening perspective on an old favorite you may have worn out. It helps remind you why you loved the song in the first place — and why you hit that play button so many times over the years.
Secure, stable fit
These earbuds slipped right into place with a slight twist and remained stable when I moved my head. Sennheiser includes four sizes of silicone ear tips for finding the right fit. That helps for comfort and also ensures you have a tight seal for proper imaging and strong bass punch.

The earbuds offer up to nine hours of battery life, and the charging case banks enough power to recharge them twice.
Responsive touch controls
The earbuds turned on automatically when I put them in, and paired up immediately to my phone when it was in Bluetooth mode. From there, you can control music and calls by touching or tapping either earbud. There's a bit of a learning curve with Sennheiser touch controls, but it becomes second nature rather quickly.
Controls are snappy, and the touch pad is not as sensitive or finicky as it is in some other small earbuds. I could adjust the fit without accidentally pausing music or skipping tracks. And when I wanted to change the volume or activate Google Assistant, the controls were intuitive and responsive.
Charging case banks hours of power
The ultra-light earbuds arrive packed in a compact charging case. It's lightweight, functional hard plastic — small enough to pocket, but durable enough to drop in a bag. You get about nine hours of listening on a single charge, and the case banks enough power to recharge the earbuds twice while you're on the move.

Features
Overview: The Sennheiser CX True Wireless in-ear headphones (CX200TW1) are two individual ear buds with no connecting wires. They connect to your smartphone or tablet (and to each other) via Bluetooth. Four pairs of silicone ear tips (XS, S, M, L) are included for a comfortable fit. The CX True Wireless headphones come with a charging case for storage, and for recharging the batteries.
Drivers: The CX True Wireless features 7mm TrueResponse dynamic transducers that deliver high-fidelity sound with clear treble, natural midrange, and deep bass. You can tailor the sound using the equalizer found in the Sennheiser Smart Control app, available for iOS and Android devices.
Bluetooth 5.2: The CX True Wireless headphones feature Bluetooth version 5.2 which pairs to your phone or audio device in seconds. You can make and receive phone calls and stream audio wirelessly in a range of up to 33' (10 meters), depending upon environmental conditions. The headphones have a maximum of 10mW of output power, and have the following profiles: Hands-Free Profile (HFP), Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP), and Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP). If your audio source supports aptX or AAC, music is automatically played in high audio quality. Otherwise, the headphones will play in standard audio quality (SBC).
Voice Assistants: The ear buds are compatible with the voice assistant that is activated to your smartphone, such as Siri or Google Assistant. Tapping the right ear bud 3 times activates the voice assistant for you to make a request or ask a question. You can also activate voice dialing through the voice assistant.
Voice Prompts: The ear buds output voice prompts to confirm events or headphone status. These voice prompts include "Power on," "Power off," "Connected," "No connection," "Pairing," "Pairing successful," "Pairing failed," "Recharge headset," "Call rejected," or "Call ended." In the Smart Control app, you can change the language of the voice prompts, choose between voice prompts and beep sounds, or deactivate some of the status messages.
Rechargeable Batteries: The CX True Wireless headphones are powered by built-in 3.7VDC Lithium-Ion rechargeable batteries. Each earbud's has a 55-72 mAh battery, while the charging case has a 400-420 mAh battery. The complete charging cycle of the charging case and earphones is approximately 1.5 hours. A 10-minute Quick Charge provides about 1 hour of playback time. The battery in the charging case charges via USB-C power (5V, 600 mA) using the supplied cable from a laptop, an AC-powered USB charging port, or a mobile 12-volt USB charging port. Fully-charged batteries in the earbuds provide approximately 9 hours playback. The charging case provides enough stored power to charge the earbuds approximately 2 additional times, to extend the playback time to 27 hours.
Phone/Music Controls: Controls for music playback and phone call functions are located on separate earbuds. Both earbuds are equipped with touch-sensitive controls. The left earbud controls Volume Down (hold), and music playback functions Play/Pause (1x) and Previous Track (2x). The right earbud controls Volume Up (hold), Voice Assistant (3x), and Next Track (2x). For phone call functions, you can use either ear bud to accept (1x), end (1x), or reject (2x) calls. When you're on a call and another call comes in, you can tap either earbud to accept (1x) or reject (2x) the incoming call.
Microphones: The CX True Wireless earbuds are equipped with a dual microphone system in a beam-forming array. This pickup pattern helps to reduce ambient noise. The microphones have a 100Hz to 10kHz frequency response.
Smart Control App: In addition to the on-board controls, the CX True Wireless in-ear headphones can be controlled by Sennheiser's Smart Control app for Android and iOS devices. The app lets you customize the ear buds' on-board controls as you desire. Firmware updates for the earphones are also available through the app. The Smart Control app is compatible with iOS devices running version 13.0 and later, and Android devices with version 8.0 and up.

So far best earbuds I've ever put in my ears. The sound quality and bass is very impressive. If I had to give it a rating from 1-10 I'm giving 10 across the boards. I can't wait to see what else Sennheiser has to offer.
