About the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless

More than just a cosmetic makeover

The Sennheiser Momentum 4 wireless noise-canceling headphones sport a sleek, lightweight design.
More than just a cosmetic makeover
Sennheiser has made some huge changes for the fourth generation of their popular Momentum noise-canceling over-ear headphones. The most obvious is the look — instead of the retro styling, these headphones sport a modern industrial design. But I've auditioned them for about a week and found there are even more updates and upgrades beneath the surface.
The Momentum 4 headphones offer touch controls, stronger noise cancellation, and play music wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.2 — the latest and most reliable version of Bluetooth available. I was able to keep my phone at my home office desk and walk all around the house without an audio dropout. And thanks to their extended battery life — up to 60 hours — I haven't had to recharge them yet.
Premium build, relaxed fit
The new redesign offers some perks I could feel. Sennheiser is using lightweight, yet durable materials, and their soft ear pads hugged my ears and sunk right into place. It was a relaxed, secure fit from the start, that I appreciated even more the longer I wore them.
Sennheiser also managed to preserve a bit of the retro charm that's made Momentum franchise such a hit. The headband is smooth and soft on the inside but sports a designer fabric on the outside. It feels as pleasant as it looks and is punctuated by a small Sennheiser logo.
Sennheiser's best noise cancellation yet
Sennheiser has always been a front-runner when it comes to noise cancellation. And the Momentum 4s offer the most "quiet" I've heard from them yet. These headphones silenced my laundry room's noisy appliances — so much so, I had to lift an earcup to make sure my dryer and dehumidifier were both still running.
And that was before I even hit play on my music! These headphones have newer processing and circuitry that work together with four built-in microphones. They can better read external sounds and distractions, then adjust the amount of noise cancellation in real time.
Smooth Sennheiser sound
There's one area where Sennheiser felt no drastic change was needed: sound quality. The 42mm drivers delivered the smooth, well-balanced tuning I expected. Bass has impact but doesn't overpower everything else. There's detail in the highs, but never it never sounds harsh.
Meanwhile, the midrange occupies an interesting place in the mix. Some vocals and instruments come across laid back, like you're sitting further away. I had just finished auditioning a set of headphones with a more prominent vocal presence, so it took me a few songs to adjust. Once I did, I grew to appreciate how the relaxed presentation matched the fit and feel — it all felt so effortless.
Optional mobile app
That said, you can personalize the sound with Sennheiser's Smart Control app. It's a free download for Android and Apple, and lets you adjust the EQ manually or choose from a few presets. You can also choose the level of noise cancellation or ambient noise you allow in.

Control music, calls, noise cancellation, and more by tapping and swiping the earcups.
Easy controls and clear calls
You have touch control over noise cancellation, music, volume, and calls. The field next to my house is close to interstate 64, so I went over there to test the built-in mics. I called my wife and even next to the busy road, she said my sounded as clear and crisp as it does inside the house. And I heard her with no problem, too.
Stay aware when you're out and about
When you need to be aware of your surroundings, you can double tap the right earcup. This turns off the active noise cancellation and activates "Transparency" Mode. It uses the built-in mic to increase the volume of ambient sounds, so you can hear what's going on around you.
(Another nifty touch: the headphones will automatically pause your music when you remove them. Then they'll resume playing when you put them back on.)
Strong, high-quality wireless audio
Along with Bluetooth 5.2, aptX® Adaptive technology is on board. This versatile wireless audio codec automatically detects if you're in an area with competing Bluetooth signals, and it will optimize either reliability or sound quality accordingly. It can also sense when you're watching a video on, say, Netflix or YouTube, and keep latency low. So, the audio and video should be better synced up.

Features
Overview: The Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless (M4AEBT) headphones have a closed circum-aural (over-the-ear) design with Bluetooth 5.2 technology and Hybrid Adaptive ANC (Active Noise Cancellation). The headphones come with a straight connecting cable for those times when you can't go wireless, a USB-C charging cable for the internal battery, and a semi-hard zippered storage case. The Momentum 4 Wireless headphones come in black and white.
Drivers: The Momentum 4 Wireless are equipped with 42mm Dynamic drivers to deliver Sennheiser's Signature Sound. With crisp, deep bass and brilliant highs, you'll hear your favorite music in great detail.
Bluetooth: The Momentum 4 Wireless headphones have Bluetooth version 5.2 which pairs to your phone or audio device in seconds. You can make and receive phone calls and stream audio wirelessly in a range of up to 33', depending upon environmental conditions. The headphones have the following profiles -- HFP, AVRCP, and A2DP.
Onboard Controls: The Momentum 4 has a single Multi-function button to turn the headphones on/off, pair the headphones with a Bluetooth device, and activate your chosen Voice Assistant. The right ear cup features a large touch-sensitive panel that lets you control various features using gesture controls, including tapping, horizontal and vertical swipes, and stretch and pinch actions.
Auto On/Off: The headphones will automatically power on and off as you unfold or fold the ear cups. This helps save battery power when you are finished listening without having to manually turn off the headphones. Folding the left ear cup in toward the headband, and then the right, turns off the headphones. Fully unfolding the ear cups turns the headphones on.
Smart Pause: The Momentum 4 Wireless have a sensor that can detect when the headphones are worn or taken off. The Smart Pause function automatically pauses your music when you remove the headphones, and resumes playback when you put them back on.
aptX Adaptive: With aptX Adaptive audio coding, the Momentum 4 Wireless headphones deliver clean, crisp HD-quality audio. aptX Adaptive offers a dynamic Low Latency (LL) mode to help keep the audio and video perfectly in sync. The bit rate adjusts to provide seamless audio and fewer dropouts. If your Bluetooth audio source supports aptX, aptX LL, or aptX Adaptive, the headphones will automatically stream music wirelessly in aptX high-quality mode. If the device is not equipped with aptX or AAC (Advanced Audio Coding), the music will be streamed in the standard quality mode (SBC).
Active Noise Cancellation: The Momentum 4 Wireless headphones feature next-generation Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Four microphones, two outside the earcup and two inside the earcup, pick up ambient noise. The headphones cancel the ambient noise with an equal, but opposite, signal. ANC is most effective with low-frequency noise, such as engines and wind. On the headphones, you can turn ANC on or off, or using the touch pad, increase and decrease the levels of the ANC and Transparency Modes. You can also adjust the levels using the Sennheiser Smart Control app.
Transparency Mode: The Transparency Mode lets you stay aware of your surroundings while wearing the headphones. It lets you carry on conversations, listen to important announcements, or hear street noise and nearby traffic. On the headphones, you can simply turn Transparent Hearing on or off. In the Smart Control app, you can turn the feature on or off, and select whether or not you want to keep music playing when the feature is activated.
Smart Control App: The Sennheiser Smart Control app lets you control and personalize the Momentum 4 Wireless headphones to your needs and convenience. In addition to configuring the Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode features (described above), the app offers an equalizer for adjusting the bass, midrange, and treble to your liking. Using your smartphone's touch screen, you can make adjustments to the sound by moving an onscreen dot up or down to raise or lower the selected frequencies. The latest settings made in the app are stored in the headphones, and will be active the next time you use the headphones, whether you use the app or not. You can deactivate the EQ by touching the center dot on the EQ graph to "center" the settings. The Smart Control app also lets you turn on/off Smart Pause, which automatically pauses music playback when you remove the headphones, and resumes playback when you put them back on. The Smart Control app is available for iOS devices (requires Version 13.0 or later) and Android devices (requires Version 8.0 and up).
Rechargeable Battery: The Momentum 4 Wireless headphones are powered by an internal, 3.7VDC 700 mAh Lithium-Polymer rechargeable battery. The battery charges in about 2 hours via USB power (800mA max) using the supplied USB cable from a laptop, an AC-powered USB charging port, or a mobile 12-volt USB charging port. A 5-minute Quick Charge gives you up to 4 hours of playtime. A fully-charged battery provides up to 60 hours of music playback using both Bluetooth and Active Noise Cancellation. You can keep track of the remaining battery life through the multi-color LED and voice prompts, as well as on your connected smartphone or tablet.
Voice Assistant: The Momentum 4 Wireless headphones is compatible with the Voice Assistant that is available on your mobile device, including Google Assistant and Siri. You can set up your Voice Assistant using the Smart Control app, and activate it using the Multi-Function button on the right earcup.
Audio Cable: If you can't listen to the headphones wirelessly, you can still enjoy your music through a wired connection. An attachable 49" straight audio cable is provided with a right-angled 3.5mm mini-plug. As long as the battery is charged, you can still take advantage of the Active Noise Cancellation when using the headphones with the audio cable. The headphone's music/phone controls and Voice Assistant functions are disabled when the audio cable is used.

These sound fantastic, I forget that they are wireless. They are light and comfy, shut out an amazing amount of sound without sounding weird, and the battery lasts all week. They are perfect for all day use in a noisy office.
