Features
Overview: The Garmin Delta SE Dog Training Bundle helps you train your canine and correct unwanted behavior from up to 1/2 mile away. This training bundle includes the Delta SE dog device and collar, and the Delta SE handheld controller. The Delta SE collar device provides corrective feedback via tones, vibration, or stimulation. The handheld controller is used while training your dog to trigger the corrective feedback on the collar device. You can train up to 2 dogs (with additional dog collar, sold separately), switching from one to the other on the controller. In addition to the collar device and controller, the bundle includes two sets of contact points (long and short) with wrench and USB charging cables.
Training Device: The Delta SE training device is a small, lightweight device that fits collar straps up to 3/4" wide and up to 1/8" thick. It has two contact points that gently touch the front of your dog's neck. The device can deliver a tone alert, vibration, or corrective stimulation to get your dog's attention, and safely and effectively provide a deterrent to unwanted or annoying behaviors. The Handheld Controller features three "action" buttons to choose the type of correction (Tone, Vibration, Stimulation). The Side switch allows you to switch between the two different dogs being trained (if configured). The handheld and collar devices both have an IPX7 water-resistance rating, allowing you to safely train in wet conditions. Dimensions:
- Collar Device: Width 2.327", Height 1.369" (w/o contact points), Depth 1.451"; Weight 3.9 ounces (w/collar)
- Collar Strap: Width 0.73", Length 25", Thickness 0.081"
- Handheld Controller: Width 2.045", Height 4.796", Depth 1.035"; Weight 3.05 ounces
Fitting the Collar: The Delta SE training collar must properly fit the dog in order to be effective. Two sets of contact points are included. The shorter contact points are for dogs with shorter coats, while dogs with thicker coats should use the longer points. A wrench is included for loosening and tighting the contact points. The device should be positioned at the front of the dog's neck with the status LED facing toward the dog's chin. The collar should be tightened so that the device does not slide back and forth, and that the contact points touch the skin. The dog should be able to swallow food and water normally. For smaller dogs, you can cut off the excess strap, leaving at least 3" to spare.
Training Methods: The Delta SE system is designed for beginners, and offers several methods for training your dog: Tone, Vibration, and Stimulation (momentary or continuous). There are 10 stimulation intensity levels, which increase sequentially. You can select the intensity (1-10 or Vibration) using the top-mounted rotary dial on the transmitter. Stimulation should initially be applied at the lowest level, and gradually increased until the dog reacts such as a head shake, neck movement, or change in facial expression. The available training methods include:
- Tone: The dog device plays an audible tone for as long as you press the "T" key, for a maximum of 8 seconds. A tone can be used as positive or negative reinforcement, depending upon your training program.
- Vibration: With the stimulation level set to "V", the device delivers a vibration for as long as you press a training key, up to 8 seconds maximum. Vibration may be a more effective training tool than stimulation, depending upon your dog's temperament and experience.
- Momentary Stimulation: A brief corrective stimulation is applied when you press the "M" key. The duration of the stimulation is not based on how long the key is depressed.
- Continuous Stimulation: Continuous stimulation is applied to the dog the entire time you press the "C" key, up to a maximum of 8 seconds. Typically, your stimulations should be much shorter than 8 seconds.
Basic Training Commands: You should begin your training with a few basic commands, such as "heel," "sit," "stay," and "here," without using the Delta SE training system. Then introduce the dog collar device with the power turned off, to allow the dog to get used to wearing it. Once you start powering up the collar and using tone, vibration, or stimulation feedback, you should begin training with a single command during a session. Training a dog requires lots of repetition, consistency, and patience, praising your dog as they begin to respond to the commands. Each dog learns at a different rate.
Signal Transmission: The Delta SE system transmits on a radio frequency of 27 MHz, which is in the upper section of the "High Frequency" (HF) band of 3-30 MHz. Other devices on the HF band include CB radios, radio control devices for models, shortwave broadcasts, and RFID. The Delta SE transmitter has a range of up to 1/2 mile.
Power Requirements: The Delta SE dog device and handheld controller are both powered by Lithium-Ion rechargeable batteries. The controller has a USB-C charging port, while the dog device has a clip-on charging cradle that attaches to the side of the device. Both devices have a battery status LED that indicates a good charge (green), less than 50% charge (yellow), very low charge (red), and battery depleted (flashing red). The batteries charge in approximately 2 hours when connected to a USB power adapter and the included charging cable. When fully charged, the dog device has a battery life of 60 hours, while the handheld controller offers approximately 70 hours of typical use. The batteries should be charged in temperatures between 32°F and 113°F.
Registration and Product Updates: You can connect the handheld unit and collar device to your computer via USB for registering the device, and to download software updates. Your computer should have Garmin Express software loaded for both services. (Garmin Express requires Windows 7 SP1 or newer or Mac OS X 10.11 or later.)
