Product Research

Features

Overview: The Garmin Alpha 200 Plus handheld unit allows you to track up to 20 dogs from up to 9 miles away. It also lets you train your dogs with tone, vibration, or corrective stimulation. The device is preloaded with topographical maps, and includes direct-to-device satellite imagery. The Alpha 200 Plus is 2-3/4" (W) x 6-3/8" (H)(10" with antenna), and 1-3/8" (D) and weighs 9.9 ounces with battery and antenna.

MURS/VHF: The Alpha 200 Plus communicates using two-way MURS (Multi-Use Radio Service) in the VHF radio band. The Alpha TT25, Alpha T20, and Alpha LTE dog devices are all compatible with the Alpha 200 Plus. The handheld device can track up to 20 dogs (using one of the above dog devices) and buddies (with other Alpha handhelds).

GPS Tracking: The Alpha 200 Plus uses data from GPS (the U.S. Global Positioning System) and Galileo (the European Union's version of GPS) satellites to pinpoint the location of each dog. The GPS data is transmitted via radio frequencies from the dog collar devices to the handheld device. Having access to multiple global navigation systems provides much greater accuracy than using GPS only.

Display and Maps: The Alpha 200 Plus has a 1.85" x 3.03" H (3.5" diagonal) color touchscreen display with a resolution of 282 x 470 pixels. The preloaded detailed TOPOActive maps provide detailed views of terrain contours, topographic elevations, summits, parks, coastlines, rivers, lakes, and geographical points. The Alpha 200 Plus has a built-in 16 GB memory, and a slot for a microSD memory card for additional storage or pre-loaded maps. With an annual subscription to Garmin Outdoor Maps+ ($49.99 as of February 2025), you can download additional maps, including enhanced Topographical maps, Campground, Hunting, and Public Lands maps, and Raster maps.

Satellite Images: Satellite Imagery provides an extra set of eyes at the surrounding terrain by providing overhead images of your route, your location, trailheads, clearings, and much more. You can download satellite images directly to your device when it is connected to a Wi-Fi network. The file size depends upon the image quality and the radius of the area you select.

Tracking: The Alpha 200 Plus works with a wide variety of Garmin Dog Devices. Up to 20 Dog Devices can be paired with the handheld unit at once. You can maintain a full list of your dogs, keeping inactive dogs on your list until you need to recall them for the next hunt. After pairing each dog's collar device with the Alpha 200 Plus, you can track your dogs on the map. Each dog is displayed on the map with an icon showing their current status: sitting, running, on point, treed, or unknown. You can also view the direction and distance to your dog on the tracking compass display. The Alpha 200 Plus can alert you when your dog enters or exits an invisible boundary you have set up (Geofence Alert), or when your dog gets within or outside of a certain distance away from you (Radius Alert). Compatible Dog Devices include: Alpha LTE, Alpha TT25, Alpha T 20, Alpha TT15/TT15X/TT15 Mini, and Alpha T5/T5X /T5 Mini.

Training: The Alpha 200 Plus and your chosen Dog Devices can be used to effectively train your dog. Before attempting to train your dog with the Alpha system, you should thoroughly research the training methods that are best suited for you, your dog, and your training goals. The Alpha 200 Plus offers three training methods, which can be applied using separate buttons on the handheld display:

  • Tone: The Alpha 200 Plus activates an audible tone on the Dog Device that can be used as either a positive or negative training cue.
  • Vibration: The Dog Device vibrates each time you press the training key, to provide a cue to your dog. The maximum vibration duration is 8 seconds.
  • Stimulation: Using the collar's contact points, the Dog Device delivers corrective electrical stimulation, either brief momentary stimulation, or continuous stimulation up to 8 seconds. You can use linear or traditional stimulation in your training. Linear stimulation lets you use progressive stimulation from level 1 to 18. Traditional stimulation lets you make quick changes using low, medium, or high settings within predetermined stimulation levels (1 through 6).

Contact Tracking: The Alpha 200 Plus can also be used to track other hunters (using other Alpha devices) and to make contact or send messages to them. Each additional Alpha device must be added as a contact to your handheld device. When additional devices are paired to the Alpha 200 Plus, you can send Emergency Alerts, send Preset Messages, and track your contacts. The Alpha 200 Plus system can also mark your truck's location while you're hunting so you can navigate your way back.

Other Compatible Devices: With the Garmin Explore app on your iOS (16.0+) or Android (8.0+) smartphone, you can see real-time dog tracking information, save collections of dog tracks, and replay tracks to see exactly what happened during the hunt. If you're using a vehicle to follow and retrieve your dogs, you can use the Garmin Tread or Tread 2 off-road powersport navigator, the Garmin DriveTrack 71 car navigator, or a Garmin Montana 700-series handheld device (each sold separately).

Battery Powered: The Alpha 200 Plus is powered by a user-replaceable 3.7-volt 1960mAh Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. The battery charges inside the handheld device in approximately 4 hours using the supplied USB cable and USB power adapter. A fully charged battery provides up to 55 hours of tracking time.
