Garmin has hit it right at the pin once again with their latest golf watch. The Approach S70 golf watch boasts a bright and easy-to-use touchscreen display with a set of golf tools that will help you take your game to the next level. And when you're off the course, Approach S70 helps you strengthen your game with health monitoring and fitness tools that will keep you sharp and living your best life.

Hit the links with a caddie on your wrist

Approach S70 comes preloaded with 43,000 courses, displayed in breathtaking full color on the bright AMOLED display. No matter where you tee it up, you'll be able to play the course like a regular. Approach S70 also puts these powerful tools on your wrist:

  • Virtual Caddie will recommend clubs based on your swing data, elevation, and wind speed. It will let you know what hazards will come into play based on the club choice too.
  • The Playslike feature takes elevation change and environmental conditions into account to provide a true read on the distance to the pin.
  • Green Countour Data displays slope direction on select greens. A Garmin Golf membership is required for this feature.
  • Pinpointer shows the direction of the pin — very useful for those blind shots.
  • Hazard View provides distance information to hazards, so you'll know whether or not you need to worry about that fairway bunker or water hazard.

Manage your stats and scoring

Want to analyze your game for future improvement? With Approach 70, you can track your putts per round, greens and fairways hit, and the average distance of your strokes. It also offers digital scorecard options for individual players, including Stroke Play and Stableford. It even gives you options for handicap scoring for individual holes, the player's local handicap, or index/slope methods. You can save, review, and print scorecards from your computer. Use the Measure Shot feature to tell you exactly how far the ball went next time you hit a really big one.

Dial in your swing

You can make the Approach S70 your secret weapon on the links by utilizing its built-in swing assistants:

  • TempoTraining: The watch emits audible tones as you begin your swing — use the tones to synchronize your swing mechanics in the optimal 3:1 swing ratio (your backswing should take 3 times longer than your downswing) and get your swing tempo down pat.
  • SwingTempo: The watch calculates the relationship between your backswing (also called upswing) and downswing and displays the results as a ratio.
  • SwingStrength: The watch measures how hard you swing your clubs so you can work on consistent delivery for your shots.

Get fit

You'll play better if your body is primed to go, so Approach S70 puts the tools of a sophisticated sports watch at your disposal, so you can record or track almost any kind of sporting activity, from bicycling to yoga. When it's time to train, you can create workouts using the Garmin Connect library of exercises; track HIIT and strength training workouts, or access free running training plans from Garmin Coach. Garmin's Fitness Age tool will let you know if your hard work is paying off.

Approach S70 also makes it easy to monitor your health, with a wrist-based heart rate monitor and pulse OX sensor. This Garmin also tracks your stress level, heart rate variability (HRV), your energy levels, and monitors your sleep. With these tools, you'll have a better appreciation of your overall health and training performance, and know when it's time to ramp up your activity or back it off.

Works with Garmin Connect IQ for a wide range of apps

The Approach S70 is compatible with Garmin's Connect IQ platform, which allows you to use a plethora of cool smartphone apps through the watch's face. Whether you want to hail a car through a rideshare service or engage with smart appliances at your house, your Approach will feel like an extension of your smartphone, while your phone stays safe in your pocket or bag as you're golfing. You can also use apps and widgets to customize your watch's display to show specific fitness information or a cool new face that reflects your personal style.

The Garmin Golf app keeps you and your buds in touch

Garmin's new golf app lets you compete against your friends on different courses, with weekly leaderboards showing rankings, scores, handicaps, and more. You can create tournaments, submit your own scores and stats to the leaderboard, and get live scoring in real time while using the app on the course.

Know when you've got incoming messages

Worried about missing urgent texts, calls, alerts, and emails on the course? Garmin's got you covered. You can pair the Approach S70 with your compatible Android™ smartphone or iPhone® and receive notifications directly on the watch's face. Leave your phone in your bag and concentrate on the task at hand.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Approach S70 is Garmin's most advanced GPS golf smartwatch to date. Its memory is pre-loaded with distance information for more than 43,000 golf courses worldwide. The S70 uses a high-sensitivity GPS receiver to measure individual shot distances and track how far you walk on the course. In addition to golf features, you can use the device for many other sports and fitness activities. When paired to your smartphone (via Bluetooth), you can receive notifications on calls, texts, and emails. No subscriptions or setup fees are required, however, a paid membership to the Garmin Golf app provides access to additional premium features that keep you at the top of your game.

Note: This Approach S70 has a 42mm diameter case. A larger 47mm model is available with a black silicone band, and may work better for larger wrists (5.12" to 8.07").

General Description: The Garmin Approach S70 features a sleek design that looks good on or off the course. It features a rugged Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3 lens, a black ceramic bezel, and a 20mm white silicone band that fits wrists from 4.53" to 7.28". Optional QuickFit® 20 interchangeable bands, available from Garmin, come in a variety of colors and materials, and can be changed without special tools. The Approach S70 has a 5 ATM water rating, meaning it can withstand pressures equivalent to a depth of 50 meters. You can wear the watch in the rain or snow without worries. The lightweight Approach S70 (47mm) weighs only 1.5 ounces.

Display: The Approach S70's 1.2" diameter AMOLED color touchscreen LCD has a resolution of 390 x 390 pixels. The display's Hole View gives you full-color details of every hole, including hazards and layups, even before you play them. In addition to the hole number and par for the hole, the Hole View also shows the distance to the front, middle, and back of the green. The frame around the display shows the numbers 1 through 18 indicating the holes of your round. As you play, the watch displays a color next the hole indicators showing your score on that hole. The Green View lets you take a closer look at the green's true shape from wherever you are on the course. For greater distance accuracy, you can drag-and-drop the pin to its current placement.

Memory: The Approach S70 has a 32 GB built-in memory for storing golf course maps, scorecards, data, and statistics from your completed rounds, workouts, health statistics, and other files. You can download music to your watch for playback through Bluetooth headphones.

GPS: The S70 provides accurate location information by utilizing multiple global positioning systems. In addition to the U.S.-based GPS (Global Positioning System), the device gives you access to Galileo, the European system, as well as GLONASS from Russia. SatIQ™ Technology lets you dynamically select the best multi-band system based on your environment.

Included Course Maps: The Approach S70 has CourseView map data loaded into its built-in flash memory. The data contains distance information to the front, back, and center of the greens for more than 43,000 golf courses worldwide. The course maps include enhanced "plays like" distances, with yardage adjusted for elevation changes and environmental conditions. Lifetime free course updates are available from Garmin Express and the Garmin Golf app. When you connect your device to your smartphone, the golf courses you use most frequently are automatically updated.

Digital Scorecard: During your round, you can enter your score by entering + or - the number of strokes over or under par. Your total score (relative to par) is updated as each hole's score is entered. If necessary, you can select any previously played hole to change the score for that hole. You can also record statistics, such as number of putts taken, greens in regulation (GIR), and number of fairways hit (or which direction you missed), during the round. Before you start the round, you can select Stroke Play or Stableford scoring. (Stableford points are awarded as specified by the USGA.) When the device is paired with the Garmin Golf app on your smartphone, you can upload your scorecard, view your saved rounds, and player statistics. Many courses have leaderboards that you can join and play against other golfers in tournaments.

PinPointer: The watch includes a PinPointer feature that shows you the direction to the pin. When you can't see the green, you can still line up your shot by using the compass pointer that shows the location of the pin. PinPointer should not be used while in a golf cart because interference from the cart may affect the accuracy of the compass.

Approach CT10 Sensors: The S70 is compatible with the optional Approach CT10 golf club sensors (sold separately). The sensors are placed on the handle end of each club, and allows the device to track your golf shots, including location, distance, and club type.

Virtual Caddie: The Virtual Caddie provides club recommendations based on the hole, wind data, and your past performance with each club. Before you can use Virtual Caddie, you must play five rounds with Approach CT10 sensors, or enable the Club Prompt settings, and upload your scorecards. You must connect the S70 to a paired phone with the Garmin Golf app.

Swing Tempo Training: The Garmin Approach S70 helps you develop a more consistent swing with Swing Tempo Training. The device measures your backswing and downswing times, and displays your swing tempo. Swing tempo is expressed as a ratio, and equals your backswing time divided by the downswing time. The ideal swing tempo is 3-to-1 or 3.0, based on studies of professional golfers.

Note: The Garmin TruSwing golf sensor has been discontinued, and is not compatible with the Approach S70.

Garmin Golf Membership: The free Garmin Golf app lets you keep track of your golf game. When paired with your smartphone and the Golf app, you can upload scorecards, review shot history and performance stats, and participate in weekly leaderboards. The app lets you create tournament and save the results of your driving range sessions. A paid membership subscription to Garmin Golf™ provides access to even more premium golf app features. As a member, you see the slope directions of select greens to help you align your putts. With the Approach R10 portable launch monitor (sold separately), your video clips of shots are copied to the cloud for viewing from multiple devices. You can also play virtual rounds at over 42,000 golf courses using the Home Tee Hero golf simulator.

Button Actions: The Approach S70 has three physical buttons along the right edge of the watch. The Action Button (top) is used to start a round of golf, or start an activity or app. The Menu button (middle) is pressed to view the controls menu and watch settings. Holding the button turns the watch on or off, as desired. The Back button (bottom) is used to return to the previous screen.

Watch: In addition to its golf and GPS functions, the Approach S70 is a digital watch with a backlight. You can customize the watch face by selecting from a wide variety of faces. By default, the watch time is set automatically when the device acquires satellite signals. You can also set the time manually. If enabled, the watch can automatically switch between standard time and daylight saving time. The watch also has an alarm, countdown timer, and can display 12-hour or 24-hour time formats.

Glances: The watch comes preloaded with glances that provide quick information, accessible on a loop by swiping the screen from the bottom. Dozens of glances are available from Altimeter to Weather, including glances that require a Bluetooth connection to a compatible phone. Some deal with health (calories, heart rate, oxygen, stress, sleep), while others track your activities (floors climbed, golf, steps, intensity minutes, training status). You can view environmental info (altimeter, barometer, compass, sunrise/sunset, weather), and help plan your day (calendar).

Non-Golf Activities: In addition to golf, the Approach S70 uses the GPS data, and data from a built-in gyroscope and accelerometer to help you keep track of and analyze other indoor or outdoor activities. The watch has preloaded activity and sports apps, with profiles for fitness training (yoga, pilates, HIIT), running (indoor/outdoor track, trail, treadmill), cycling, swimming, and outdoor recreation (hiking, climbing, skiing, rowing, and kayaking).

Elevate Heart Rate Monitor: The Approach S70 is equipped with the Elevate wrist-based heart rate monitor. The monitor is located on the bottom of the watch, and uses light to detect changes in your skin to determine your heart rate. The device analyzes your heart rate readings while you are sleeping to determine your heart rate variability (HRV). The watch calculates and displays your average HRV after three weeks of consistent sleep data.

Bluetooth/Wi-Fi: Approach S70 can connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and provide many valuable connected features. Some features require you to install the Garmin Connect or Garmin Golf apps. The device can display phone notifications and weather forecasts, as well as obtain software updates through the apps. If you misplace your smartphone when it is paired to the S70, you can use the Find My Phone feature to locate it if it's currently in range. You can also locate a lost Approach S70 using your smartphone and the Find My Device feature.

Music Playback: The S70 offers three different music playback options. When paired to your smartphone, the S70 can control and play music loaded onto your phone. You can also download music from a third-party provider (Spotify, Deezer, Amazon Music) to your device, or music files stored on your computer. Whether the music is on your phone or stored in the watch, the watch has basic music playback controls. You can listen to music loaded on your watch on Bluetooth headphones paired to the watch.

Garmin Pay: The Approach S70 features the Garmin Pay contactless payment solution. Garmin Pay lets you pay for purchases quickly without your wallet or phone. It works almost anywhere you can make contactless payments. All you have to do is enter your passcode, select the credit card you want to use from your virtual wallet, and hold your wrist near the card reader. Your card number is not stored on your device, or passed to merchants when you pay, so it's private and secure. Garmin Pay works with many major credit and debit cards from major banks, including Visa and MasterCard.

Garmin Apps: The Garmin Approach S70, when paired to your smartphone, can be even more valuable and informative when synced to these Garmin applications:

  • Garmin Golf: The Garmin Golf app helps you keep track of each round of golf you play, analyze your game, and show improvements. You can compete against your friends, or participate in weekly leaderboards on any golf course. The app is available for devices running iOS 14 or later, and Android (version varies with device).
  • Garmin Connect: The Garmin Connect app is a useful source for health and fitness data. It can help you keep track of your non-golf activities and sleep quality. The app is compatible with Android devices (version 7.0 and up) or Apple iPhone and iPod touch (iOS 15.0 or later).

Power Requirements: The Approach S70 operates on a built-in rechargeable Lithium-ion battery. The battery is charged using the proprietary USB charging/data cable. In the GPS mode, a fully charged battery should give you up to 15 hours of continuous use as you play golf or perform other activities. You can turn off the GPS receiver when you are training indoors to save battery. If you are using the unit continuously as a watch, a fully charged battery should provide up to 10 days of battery life. To save battery life, you can turn off the Always On display mode, and turn off GPS when you don't need it.
