Do more with Garmin Drive

The Garmin Drive app lets you tap into your Dash Cam Mini 2 three new ways:

First is through the Vault, which is a secure online storage platform from Garmin. Any videos triggered by an incident (whether you're driving or not) automatically go to the Vault and you can access them via a password and your Garmin Drive app that's connected to Wi-Fi. This way you don't have to worry about lost or damaged memory cards. Extended storage plans are available with an optional paid subscription.

The second way is through Live View, which also requires a Wi-Fi connection to the Drive app, as well as constant power to the dash cam (see the next paragraph). You'll be able to peek in on whatever your camera's seeing at any time, from anywhere.

The third way is Parking Guard, which monitors activity around your parked vehicle and sends an alert to your smartphone if an incident is detected. It'll also start recording automatically when an alert is sent. You may need Garmin's optional constant power cable OR optional hardwire powering kit (neither is included) to supply constant power to the Mini 2 while your vehicle is parked with the engine turned off.

Incident Detection

If you're involved in an accident, Garmin's Incident Detection feature uses a built-in G-Sensor to detect hard braking or a collision, and then saves vital video files for a complete record of the event.

Multiple camera system

If you own multiple Garmin dash cameras, they can be paired to your smartphone through the Garmin Drive app. Use this cool feature to install multiple cameras in the same vehicle, or to connect to dash cameras from multiple vehicles to the same phone. Garmin lets you create composite picture-in-picture videos from simultaneous recordings.

Note: This dash cam does not include a microSD card for video storage. In order to save recorded video, you will need a microSD card with storage capacity 8GB or higher.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Garmin Dash Cam Mini 2 is a tiny stand-alone dash camera with a wide-angle 140° lens that records full HD video of the road ahead as you drive. The camera mounts to your windshield with the supplied adhesive mount. It records video and audio onto a microSD card (not included). As it records, the time and date and location data are embedded into the video so you'll know exactly when and where a captured event occurred.

Recording: The Dash Cam Mini 2 records in a continuous loop onto an inserted microSD card. It records both audio and video as you drive, or video only (if desired). As long as the Dash Cam is receiving power, it is recording. As the available memory runs out, it starts recording over the oldest recordings. You can manually save a video recording or take a still photo by pressing a button on the back panel.

Resolution: The Dash Cam Mini 2 records high definition video at up to 30 frames per second onto the microSD card. The device records with a video resolution of 1920 x 1080p with Clarity™ HDR (High Dynamic Range) which combines multiple exposure levels for each video frame and improves clarity in high contrast or low-light conditions.

No Display: The Dash Cam Mini 2 has no LCD screen. Videos and photos can be viewed on your smartphone through the Garmin Drive app. The Camera Setup procedure displays a live video feed to allow you to adjust the position of the camera. You cannot view live video while recording.

Lens: The Dash Cam has a 140° wide angle lens that gives you a full view of the road, including most cross traffic.

Microphone: An integrated microphone records audio inside the vehicle. If desired, the microphone can be turned off so the unit records only video.

Power Cables: The Dash Cam Mini 2 comes with two power cables, allowing you to install the camera in a number of ways. The longer cable (13.25 feet) can be used for a more permanent installation, feeding the cable up and around the windshield, and tucked out of sight behind the vehicle trim. The shorter cable can be used for temporary installations, especially if you transfer the camera from one vehicle to another.

Note: The camera does not have an internal battery for portable recording.

Constant Power Cable: With the optional Constant Power Cable, you can power the Dash Cam at all times. The cable plugs into your vehicle's OBD II port, allowing you to power up to two dash cameras for a selected length of time (10 minutes, 24 hours, or always on) after you turn off your vehicle.

Parking Guard: The Parking Guard feature lets you record video automatically while your vehicle is parked, as long as the Dash Cam Mini 2 is connected to an external power source. When you turn off your vehicle, the camera automatically enters the parked recording mode. Each time it detects an incident, the camera automaticaly records video and sends a notification to your smartphone (if the camera is connected to a Wi-Fi network). In the settings, you can set the amount of time the vehicle must remain still before Parking Guard begins (Auto Start), and the amount of time Parking Guard remains active before turning off (Monitoring Time).

microSD Card: The Dash Cam Mini 2 records video and audio onto a microSD card (not included with the camera). The camera is compatible with microSD cards 8 GB or greater, up to 512 GB. Class 10 speed rated cards, or higher, are required.

Automatic Incident Detection: The Dash Cam has a built-in G-sensor, which can detect when a collision or hard braking occurs. When the G-sensor detects an incident, the previous, current, and next recordings are automatically saved. This way, a complete record of the moments before, during, and after the event is preserved.

Smartphone Pairing: You can pair your Dash Cam Mini 2 with your smartphone via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi and use the Garmin Drive app to change camera settings, set up a multi-camera network, and view, edit, and save photos and videos. When viewing videos or photos, the Dash Cam stops recording, and alerts are disabled. Both saved and unsaved videos and photos can be viewed on your smartphone.

Multiple Camera Network: Multiple dash cameras can be paired to your smartphone through the Garmin Drive app. This allows you to install multiple cameras in the same vehicle, or connect to dash cameras from multiple vehicles to the same phone. You can create composite picture-in-picture videos from simultaneous recordings. If one of the cameras in the network was GPS-connected, you can add location information to the saved videos on all of the cameras in the network.

Installation: The Dash Cam Mini 2 is designed to be mounted on your windshield using the included adhesive mount. The adhesive mount is approximately 1" in diameter, however, it is designed for long term installations. The camera attaches to the adhesive disk via a ball-and-socket joint, allowing it to be easily removed. Two adhesive mounts are included, allowing you to move the camera from one vehicle to another. The camera should always be mounted in an upright orientation, otherwise the resulting video will be upside down or sideways. If connected to an ignition-switch powered outlet, the Dash Cam will turn on and off automatically as you turn the ignition on and off. An optional Parking Mode Cable or Constant Power Cable allows you to hardwire the camera to the vehicle's power and ground circuits.

Viewing Videos and Photos: You can view recorded video and still image files on the your smartphone. You can remove the microSD card and view the files using a card reader on your computer. When viewing the footage on your computer, you'll have a record of the date and time. Videos and still images are stored in several folders:

  • 100EVENT: videos saved automatically when the unit detects an incident
  • 101PHOTO: still photos
  • 102SAVED: manually saved videos
  • 103PARKM: videos saved while parked
  • 104UNSVD: Unsaved video footage; when storage space is full, the oldest unsaved video is overwritten

Garmin Drive App: Pairing your Dash Cam to your smartphone via the Garmin Drive™ app provides additional features. The app lets you set up a multiple-camera network, change camera settings, and view, edit, and save photos and videos. You can also upload, manage, and share footage on a secure, online storage drive using the Vault Subscription Plan. The Garmin Drive app is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 13.0 or later, and Android devices running version 6.0 and up.

Garmin Vault: The Vault subscription plan lets you store your saved Dash Cam videos. By default, videos are stored in the Vault for 24 hours. The Standard Vault plan stores videos for 7 days for $4.99 per month. The Advanced Plan extends the storage to 30 days for $9.99 per month. There is no size limit for the amount of data stored. Uploading videos to the Vault requires an active Wi-Fi connection.

Customer Q&A

9 questions already asked

Q
Can I skip the Garmin app (and subscription, and constant power hookup), and just occasionally move the SD card to an adapter to view the videos? Thank you.
stephen  Jun 08, 2023
1 answer
A
Thank you for your question, Stephen. You can view recorded video and still image files on your smartphone. You can remove the microSD card and view the files using a card reader on your computer. When viewing the footage on your computer, you'll have a record of the date and time. Videos and still images are stored in several folders. So you do not have to have the Garmin Drive App or the Vault subscription, but both do give you added features. Feel free to give one of our Advisors a call at 1-800-324-9695 or by online chat, they'll be happy to go over those details with you.

Q
Is Garmin mini 2 compatible with iPhone 5s?
cathy  Nov 25, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Cathy, and thank you for your question. Your Iphone 5S should have both Bluetooth, and Wifi. If not at home you would need to make your phone a wifi hotspot in order to connect thru the Garmin app. The 5s should have hotspot capabilities.

Q
What is the best size SD card to use? I read larger is not smarter as trying to locate a specific 1 minute video clip is increasingly difficult to find among the many stored on a large SD card.
the bloke  Nov 25, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings the bloke, and thank you for your question. Garmin recommends the minimum card size at 8GB. To make it easier on yourself, I would have to say go with the minimum.

Q
What format does the SD card have to be formatted to? I use Windows 10 on my computer and it does not format to FAT32.

A
The Garmin app will prompt you to format the card when you insert it into the camera. The card then is easily read by my macs, but I do not know if there would be a problem with Windows.
stephen  Aug 21, 2023
A
This camera requires SD cards formatted to FAT32.

Will this work with an ODB II port constant power cable? In order to keep the 12v outlet free.

You can plug into your vehicle's OBD II port, allowing you to power the Dash Cam at all times using the Garmin Constant Power Cable here: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_1501253023/Garmin-Constant-Power-Cable.html

Yes, it fits perfectly! Just line it up with the indicated marks and it works just fine. Very happy with the cameras and the filter.

Q
What is the largest size SDmicro card will this support?
mark  Jul 31, 2021

A
I use a 256MB card, as was suggested by Crutchfield at the time of purchase. It is easy to find a particular moment despite the size because the downloaded videos, 60 seconds each, are clearly dated and time-stamped. I use two cards solely for the Garmin, to swap out easily. Make a mental note of of the date and time of any drive that you know you will want to see, and the big size is not a problem.
stephen  Aug 21, 2023
A
512GB
daniel  Aug 02, 2021

It can take a minimum of 8 gb and a maximum of 512 gb
thomas  Aug 01, 2021

I'm not sure. I have a 32gb in mine currently and working great.
