And when it's paired with a heart rate monitor (not included), Edge 540 tracks your heart rate, letting you train in the proper heart rate zone to optimize your workout. Check out this sensor bundle to buy the Edge 540 along with a heart-rate monitor and other training sensors.

Maps and more
Garmin has built multi-band GNSS capabilities into Edge 540. By tapping into multiple satellite positioning services, GNSS provides the most accurate information available wherever you roam. Garmin's Cycle Map is preloaded so you can create courses with turn-by-turn directions for both on- and off-road adventures. Real-time routing lets you change plans (and course) easily. Ride-specific maps highlight trails and roads that match your adventure.
Stay safe and aware
Edge 540 works with Garmin's Varia smart lights and rear-view radar, ensuring that you'll know what's happening on the road around you and that drivers are aware of your presence. Product Research
Features
Overview: The Garmin Edge 540 is a compact, GPS-enabled advanced cycling computer with navigation and connected features, such as live tracking, social media sharing, weather, and the ability to send and receive course maps. The Edge 540 includes two standard mounts, and the Out-front Bike mount.
Display: The Edge 540 has a 2.6" backlit, high resolution color LCD (1.5"W x 2.0"H), with a display resolution of 246 x 322 pixels. You can view the maps, maneuver through the menus, and make selections by touching the controls on the left, right, and below the display. The display will show your chosen route, elapsed time, speed, distance, time of day, and calories burned (if applicable).
Garmin Cycle Maps: The Edge 540 comes with preloaded Garmin Routable Cycle Maps with turn-by-turn directions for on and off road courses throughout North America. The maps will alert you of upcoming turns, and can guide you back to the route, if you get off course. If you're into mountain biking, you can save your favorite trail routes, or browse for nearby routes using the Trailforks app, and download them to your Edge device. The Edge 540 has free access to worldwide mapping from Garmin, and offer unlimited map updates via Garmin Express.
High-Sensitivity GPS Receiver: The unit features a high-sensitivity GPS receiver which will stay locked onto satellites, even near tall buildings or under tree cover. By default, the device uses the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate overhead satellites. When you're in locations with poor sky visibility, you can use a combination of GPS and GLONASS (Russian satellite system), or GPS and Galileo (European Union satellite system) to obtain a more accurate position. Using GPS and another satellite system together will reduce battery life more quickly than using GPS alone. When you turn on the unit outdoors, it finds satellites quickly, so you can start your ride quicker. The time of day and the date are automatically set by the GPS receiver. If training indoors, you can turn off the GPS receiver to save battery power.
Waterproof: The Edge 540 is waterproof to IEC Standard 60529 IPX7, which means it is protected from most types of inclement weather, as well as splashes of water. It can also withstand immersion in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The casing is totally sealed, including the edge-mounted controls, and the USB port has a water-resistant cover to prevent corrosion. The device also has a wide operating temperature range of -4° to 140°F.
Smartphone Compatible: You can wirelessly link your device to a smartphone using the Garmin Connect mobile app (Android 7.0 and up / iOS 15.0 or later). While connected, you can receive smart notifications on your device as you ride. At the end of your ride, you can transfer the ride data directly to your phone via Bluetooth. Using the app, you can analyze the details of your ride, or share it with others. You can also search out courses and workouts stored at Garmin Connect, download them to your smartphone, and send them to your Edge 540 wirelessly. Real-time weather updates and alerts can be sent from your smartphone to your device.
LiveTrack: Another connected feature of the Edge 540, LiveTrack, allows your friends and family to follow your races and training activities in real time. You can invite your followers via email or social media to view your live data on the Garmin Connect tracking page. Once they see your invitation, they can click to follow your progress on a map and see your stats. With GroupTrack, you can check the location of your riding companions, up to 50 riders, at once.
Controls: Most of the controls are located along the edge of the display. On the Home screen, you can access your bike profile, change your activity profile, manage your history, courses, and workouts, and start a new ride. During your ride, you can use the front panel buttons to start/stop the timer and mark a new lap without having to look at the screen. The power and backlight button is located on the side.
ClimbPro: The ClimbPro feature helps you pace yourself during upcoming climbs. The device displays details about the climbs, including when they occur, the average gradient, and total ascent. Climb scores are based on length and gradient, and are indicated by color (green to red) .
ANT+: ANT+ is a wireless technology that allows certain accessories to communicate with the Edge 540. ANT+ sensors generally work within 10 feet of the unit. In addition, an increasing number of health clubs and fitness centers have ANT+ compatible equipment in their facilities, so you can use the same accessories separate from your device. Compatible Garmin ANT+ accessories include:
- Cadence Sensor: The optional Cadence Sensor lets you measure your pedaling cadence as you ride. The sensor easily installs on one of your pedal crank arms, and provides feedback to the Edge 540 each time you rotate the pedal. There are no magnets or parts to line up, making it easy to swap from one bike to another. It connects to your device via ANT+ technology. The Cadence Sensor is powered by a user-replaceable CR2032 Lithium coin cell battery, which lasts approximately one year (based on 1 hour of use per day).
- Speed Sensor: The optional Speed Sensor mounts to the hub of either wheel, and helps you determine your speed and distance more accurately than GPS. Once installed, you'll need to calibrate it with your Edge device, or enter the wheel size in the setup menu on the Garmin Connect website. It connects to the Edge 540 via ANT+ wireless connectivity.
- Heart Rate Monitors: Optional heart rate monitors, such as the HRM-Dual or HRM-Pro Plus, can help you get the most out of your workouts, and reach your fitness goals. The heart rate monitors feature an adjustable strap that is worn around the chest, just below the sternum. The heart rate monitor uses ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy technology to wirelessly transmit your heart rate data in real time to the Edge 540. Wireless range is approximately 9.8 feet (3 meters).
- Varia Bike Radar/Lights: The optional Varia Rearview Radar/Taillight, Rearview Radar, and Radar Taillight Camera work with the Edge 540 to keep you safe as you ride on the highway. Varia Rearview Radar can alert you of vehicles approaching from behind. Varia Smart headlights and tail lights integrate with the Edge 540 and change intensity with your speed.
User Profile: The Edge 540 allows you to enter data about yourself to create a User Profile. This data (gender, birth year, weight, and height) is used to calculate accurate ride data.
Garmin Connect: Free web-based Garmin Connect software lets you store your workout data for comprehensive analysis. Garmin Connect is used by cyclists worldwide, and presents your data in an easily understood manner, with maps, reports, and suggested activities. You can create fitness goals and send them to your device. As you complete activities toward your goals, they are tracked on both the device and on Garmin Connect.
Courses: The Edge 540 can save your ride data as you train. From that saved data, you can use Garmin Connect software to create courses that you can follow in the future. Each time you follow the course, the unit will compare your time to previous rides, or to other riders, and let you set performance goals. As you ride along the course, the display will indicate distance and time to upcoming maneuvers.
Incident Detection: The Edge 540 offers an incident detection feature for certain outdoor activities. Prior to enabling this feature, you should set up emergency contact information in the Garmin Connect app. When an incident is detected by the device, the Garmin Connect app can send an automated text message and email with your name and GPS location to your emergency contacts. A message appears on the device and paired phone indicating your contatcts will be informed after 30 seconds has elapsed. If you do not require assistance, you can cancel the automated emergency message.
Auto Pause: The built-in timer will pause automatically when it detects you're not moving. The timer will restart when you resume your ride.
Auto Lap: The Auto Lap feature lets you automatically mark the lap at a specific position. This helps you compare your performance over different parts of a ride (i.e. a long climb or training sprints). You can also use Auto Lap to mark laps at a specific distance.
Mountain Biking Metrics: The Edge 540 can track Mountain Biking (MTB) metrics as you ride. The device measures your Flow (how well you maintain speed during a ride or section), Grit (the difficulty of the mountain bike trail, including the grade and angle of turns), and jumps (hangtime, distance, speed). A 60-second moving average of your Flow and Grit is displayed, as well as the overall scores for the current lap.
Ride Data Storage: The Edge 540's 16 GB built-in memory stores up to 200 hours of your ride data until it can be uploaded to your Garmin Connect account. The unit not only has an odometer to keep track of your mileage, but includes data on your last ride, longest ride, fastest ride, and all rides. The memory also stores up to 100 routes and 200 waypoints, favorites, and locations.
Virtual Partner: During your workout, you can use the Virtual Partner to help you meet your goals. The Virtual Partner rides along with you and provides incentive for you to keep up or stay ahead. If necessary, you can adjust the speed of the Virtual Partner during the ride.
USB Port: A USB-C port is provided on the front edge of the unit for charging and connecting to your computer. A water-resistant cap keeps moisture out.
Power Requirements: The unit is powered by a built-in Lithium-Ion battery. It charges via the included USB cable when connected to a USB power adapter or your computer. The battery charge level is expressed as a percentage on the display. Typical battery life for the device is approximately 26 hours.
Battery Save Mode: You can enable the Battery Save mode to extend the battery life. When you turn on Battery Save mode, the screen turns off during the activity. To wake it up, you can manually press a key, or enable automatic alerts. GPS tracking points and sensor data are recorded less frequently. Speed, distance, and track data accuracy are reduced. You will need to disable Battery Save mode to use all of the device features. With Battery Save enabled, you can squeeze up to 42 hours of battery life on a single charge.
Optional Charge Power Pack: The optional Garmin Charge Power Pack is a 3100mAh external Lithium-ion battery pack that plugs directly into the Edge 540 cycling computer to extend the battery life by up to 24 hours. It includes a mount adapter that fits the battery pack onto the Out-Front Bike Mount.
Mounting: The Edge 540 can be mounted to your bicycle's handlebars or stem using the included standard "quarter-turn" mounts. Two sizes of rubber mounting bands are included for best fit. Two complete mounts are included to allow you to use the unit on multiple bikes. The included Out-Front Bike Mount lets you put the device in front of the handlebars for easier, heads-up positioning and increased safety.
