Garmin RV 785 & Traffic portable GPS navigator

Seven standout inches of screen

This Garmin's 7" display features multi-touch control that gives you easy access to preloaded maps of the U.S., Canada, much of Mexico, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands. It's big enough to allow flexibility about where you can mount it on your dash or console and still see the maps. RV-specific points of interest will come in handy when it's time to find Wi-Fi or on-site showers — you can even add your own favorite destinations. And with one tap of the screen, Garmin's Up Ahead feature pulls up details for services that lie ahead on your route, including restaurants, gas stations, and more. You also get up to four free map updates per year to keep you current on road changes.

A dash camera for added security and convenience

Thanks to an integrated video camera, you'll have a continuous video record of everything that happens on the road before you. Garmin incorporates a G-sensor to automatically save vital footage in the event of a collision, and optional GPS tagging stamps the video with your location, speed, date and time for the most accurate presentation possible. You can easily remove the RV 785 from its magnetic mount so you can take high-res photos of any damage done. Speaking of the mount, it also features a video input so you can add a feed from a non-Garmin wireless camera, whether it's a backup cam or a camera placed somewhere else on your vehicle. A microSD™ card is included.

Extra help along the way for drivers

You're always on the lookout behind the wheel, but the RV 785's also keeping an eye on the road ahead to give you an audible forward collision warning if you approach a car too rapidly, and lane departure warning if you veer from your lane. Thanks to built-in GPS, this Garmin even detects speed and red light cameras on the horizon and gives you a heads up.

Custom directions for your RV

Road restrictions info enables the RV 785 to find the perfect route for your RV. You can build a custom profile with your RV's height, weight, length, width, and trailer details, and the navigator will deliver the best, safest route to your destination on most roadways in the contiguous 48 states and Canada. If you're in a hurry, Garmin includes standard RV sizes which allow you to change your vehicle profile with the push of button. And you can plan trips with multiple stops and save routes for future reference with ease.

The navigator's elevation map tool gives you info on elevation along your route while viewing the map screen. You can tap the screen for more detail about potential steep grades before you hit a hill your RV might not be ready for.

Built-in directory of RV parks and services

The RV 785 includes a database of RV parks and services around the globe, giving you instant access to thousands of sites in North America and beyond. You'll be able to find RV parks and campgrounds quickly, and you can narrow your search by type of amenities desired, including pet-friendly, on-site laundry, electric hookups, Wi-Fi, and more. You can also narrow your search to include results from PlanRV Parks, iOverland, Ultimate Public Campgrounds, and KOA, as well as European directories. The included PlanRV directory can point you to nearby garages that can help if your RV breaks down or needs service.

Alerts for road hazards along the way

Worried about possible dangerous road conditions? The RV 785 provides upcoming highway info, such as sharp curves, high winds, and weight limits. You'll also get local info like bridge heights and animal or railroad crossings. If you're in an area with one-way streets or school zones, you'll get a heads-up about paying attention to the speed limit or driving in the wrong direction. The navigator also provides mile marker locations, along with border notices five miles before you reach a new state line or the border to a different country.

Avoid time-wasting traffic jams

Garmin includes a traffic information receiver with the 785, so you can get a comprehensive view of congestion along your route and how long potential delays might be. It'll even suggest alternate routes to get you to your destination faster. And you won't have to pay a penny more for this service over the life of your navigator.

The Garmin Drive app packs plenty of extras

You can pair the RV 785 with your iPhone® or Android™ smartphone to take advantage of Garmin's Drive app, which allows the two devices to share information, such as live traffic information, saved and recently found locations, where you parked, and your current destination. The Drive app also provides smart notifications to your navigator for incoming calls and texts so you won't miss anything important. You can also subscribe to dynamic services from Garmin for more road-friendly content like advanced weather reports, live parking, and traffic camera locations for an additional fee.

Points of interest via Foursquare® and TripAdvisor®

This Garmin comes with crowd-sourced points of interest from TripAdvisor and Foursquare, giving you user-verified info for millions of stops along America's roadways. You'll find the most relevant and popular hotels, restaurants, and roadside attractions within seconds, many with TripAdvisor ratings.

Voice recognition for hands-free guidance

You can activate the RV 785's guidance by using your voice — simply speak one of its recognizable commands and it'll get started. Hit the road without using your hands for safer exploring.

Hear directions like your neighbor would give

The powerful built-in speaker overcomes engine noise so you can hear about upcoming maneuvers. The navigator offers Garmin Real Directions with Garmin Real Voice, a combination that helps keep you relaxed as you drive. Real Directions voice prompts speak the instructions to you like a friend would, using easy-to-see landmarks, buildings and businesses, and traffic lights, rather than streets with tiny signs that you might not see in time. With Real Voice technology, you'll hear directions spoken in a personable, human-sounding voice that you'll comprehend readily.

Stay on the right path

Active Lane Guidance shows you colored arrows for the correct lane for an upcoming turn, while 3-D representations of buildings and terrain help give you a better perspective of where you are. You'll see these visual features in a split-screen with your overall route so you won't lose sight of what's further down the road. This Garmin's also compatible with the optional Garmin BC 35 wireless rear-view camera, so you can add an extra layer of safety when you're backing up.

Convenient Bluetooth® compatibility

The Garmin's built-in Bluetooth connectivity allows you to conduct phone calls hands-free with your compatible phone. You can keep in touch with friends and family without diverting your attention from the road ahead. Most points of interest in Garmin's database include the phone numbers, so you can call ahead to make reservations at restaurants or check availability at nearby campgrounds.

Update easily with built-in Wi-Fi

Nobody wants to hook their navigator up to their computer when it's time to get a map update or other software change. With built-in Wi-Fi connectivity you can perform updates from your vehicle, so long as you're connected to a Wi-Fi signal or a public hotspot that doesn't require a web browser sign-in.

Map updates are available for download up to 4 times a year with no subscription or update fees and no expiration dates. Map updates can be obtained by connecting the device to a Wi-Fi network and directly download the maps, or connect the device to your computer and obtain the updates through Garmin Express.

Wi-Fi Compatible: You can keep the device updated with the latest maps and software without connecting it to a computer. When connected to a Wi-Fi network, the device checks for available updates, and displays an icon on the screen. The connected network is added to the list of saved networks, and will reconnect automatically when it is within range.

Garmin Express: You can connect the unit to your computer with the supplied USB cable for downloading map updates, custom POIs, voices, and vehicles. You will need to download the Garmin Express software to update your maps and register the unit. Garmin Express requires Windows 7 SP1 or newer or Mac OS X 10.11 or higher.

RV Parks and Services Directory: The Garmin RV 785 & Traffic includes a directory of thousands of RV parks and campgrounds, as well as service locations in the coverage area. You can search for sites with various amenities, including hookups (full, electric, water, pull-throughs, dump stations), accessibility (pet-friendly, handicap, big-rigs), recreational (boating, fishing, swimming, cable TV, internet), and service (truck stops, towing, repairs, tires). Additional content from Ultimate Public Campgrounds, KOA, iOverlander, and PlanRV.

Customized RV Routing: The included maps feature RV-related restrictions, such as bridge heights, and related information for most major highways. After entering your RV's dimensions (height, weight, width, and length), the device will find routes that are suitable for your RV. While traveling, the unit will display the elevation grade of your current route.

Avoidances: You can program the unit to avoid certain things that may be undesirable on your route. The device can avoid areas with environmental or emissions restrictions that may apply to your vehicle. Other examples of things that can be avoided include U-Turns, Highways, Carpool Lanes, Unpaved Roads, and Ferries. You can also add Custom Avoidances for certain areas and roads.

Bluetooth: The RV 785 & Traffic has built-in Bluetooth technology. This allows you to sync the unit with a Bluetooth-enabled device for hands-free calling through its integrated microphone and speaker. You can make and receive phone calls as long as the devices are within 33 feet and paired.

microSD Card Slots: The RV 785 & Traffic has two microSD card slots: one for the dash cam, and the other for optional map updates. An 8 GB Class 10 microSD card is included for recording video from the dash cam. The second microSD card slot lets you store and use optional City Navigator maps (available from Garmin), or download and save vehicle icons from the Garmin Garage. The unit will accept microSD cards up to 64 GB.

Magnetic Mount: The unit comes with the Garmin Suction Cup and Magnetic Mount. The mount has an extra large 3" diameter suction cup for mounting the device on your windshield or dashboard. The RV 785 attaches to the mount with a strong magnet, allowing you to remove the device from the mount easily, without having to disconnect any cables. The mount has a Micro USB port for connecting the included vehicle power adapter/traffic antenna, and a 3.5mm video input for an optional Garmin backup camera.

Power Requirements: The Garmin RV 785 & Traffic is powered by your vehicle's battery using the included 12-volt vehicle power adapter. The built-in Lithium-Ion battery will provide up to 2 hours of use after a full charge. The included GTM 36 power adapter contains the required antenna for Garmin Traffic services.

Optional Backup Cameras: The RV 785 & Traffic is compatible with the Garmin BC35 Wireless Backup Camera (sold separately). The BC35 helps you to see what's behind your vehicle when backing up. The camera can pair via Wi-Fi to the RV 785 & Traffic and transmit a clear view from the rear of your RV. (The transmitter should be installed within 10 feet of the RV 785.) The BC35 is hardwired to your vehicle's reverse light circuit, which powers the camera on when you shift the vehicle into reverse. Wiring it to a constant power circuit lets you view the camera's video at any time. Up to 4 BC35 cameras can be paired to the RV 785 at once to provide multiple views of your RV. The RV 785 & Traffic also has a 3.5mm composite video input for connecting a wired backup camera.

Dash Cam Features

Built-in Dash Camera: The Garmin RV 785 & Traffic has a built-in dash camera for recording the view of the road ahead as you travel. Recorded footage is automatically saved if an incident is detected, including the GPS details of when and where it occurred. You can also manually save your footage at any time. The video (and audio, if enabled) is recorded onto the provided 8 GB microSD card inserted into the slot behind the removable back panel. Class 10 or higher microSD cards from 4 to 64 GB are supported. You can set the video resolution to 1080p for best quality video, or 720p to save more video to the memory card.

Viewing Videos and Photos: Recorded videos (MP4 format) and photos (JPEG format) stored on the memory card can be viewed on the device. You can view or transfer footage to your computer by connecting the device, or inserting the memory card, into your computer. When you pair the RV 785 to the Garmin Drive app, you can view or transfer videos or photos on your smartphone.

Camera-assisted Features: The built-in dash cam enables many advanced features on the RV 785 & Traffic. The Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) provides warnings and alerts of potential dangers as you drive. These features include the Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning systems. The FCWS alerts you when the device detects that you are not maintaining a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. The LDWS alerts you when the device detects you may be crossing a lane boundary unintentionally.

Navigation Features

Garmin Real Directions: The RV 785 & Traffic features Garmin Real Directions with easy-to-understand driving directions using recognizable landmarks, buildings, and traffic lights, in addition to spoken street names.

Voice Command: You can use your voice to activate and operate the RV 785 & Traffic . Voice Command allows you to use the device by speaking words and commands and following the voice prompts. After speaking a predetermined Wakeup Phrase, you can enter the names and/or address of popular, well-known locations. If necessary, you can disable voice prompts without muting the device, so you'll still hear the audible directions as you travel.

Garmin Drive: Garmin Drive is a smartphone application that allows the device to download live data using your phone's data connection, and transferring the data wirelessly via Bluetooth. The free Garmin Drive app provides access to real-time services, such as live traffic, basic weather and live parking. Where available, photoLive traffic cameras let you view live photos of more than 10,000 traffic cameras to see traffic and weather conditions. Notifications from your smartphone, such as text messages, calendar reminders, or app alerts, are sent to the RV 785 & Traffic for viewing. Garmin Drive is compatible with devices running iOS 11.3 or later, or Android 6.0 or higher.

Garmin Traffic: Traffic reports help you avoid tie-ups that may delay your travel. Here (formerly NAVTEQ) collects, processes, and distributes real-time traffic conditions. Two traffic services are available with the RV 785 & Traffic: Live Traffic and Garmin Traffic. If you pair the RV 785 & Traffic with your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, and use the free Garmin Drive app, you can receive Live Traffic information through the app. Live Traffic data is updated minute-by-minute, and the alerts are fairly specific ("Stalled car in left lane." "Debris in roadway"). When the included GTM36 Car Charger is used with the RV 785 & Traffic, Garmin Traffic information is received by the device and displayed on the screen. Garmin Traffic data is updated every five minutes, and the warnings are more generic ("Slow traffic ahead." "Accident ahead.").

Points of Interest: The built-in maps include millions of Points of Interest (POIs) from the vast Foresquare database, such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, attractions, and ATMs. With the help of TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site, you can view ratings for many of your destinations. A travel database from The History Channel provides additional pictures and descriptions of notable historic sites, monuments, museums, and parks.

Active Lane Guidance: Active Lane Guidance with voice prompts lets you know in advance which lane you should to be in to make an upcoming turn. In select metropolitan areas, the RV 785 & Traffic will enter split screen mode to display the photoReal junction view, a realistic depiction of the junction, complete with road signs and brightly-colored arrows to indicate the proper lane for navigation.

Map View Options: You can choose from a 3D map view or two 2D map views (Track Up or North Up) as you navigate to your destination.

Speed Limits: As you travel along a major road or street, the speed limit is displayed on the screen alongside of the vehicle's speed display. If you are exceeding the speed limit, a tone will sound, and the color of the vehicle speed indication will change to red. If the highway's posted speed limit has changed since the last map update, you can change the speed limit display on the unit.

Where Am I?: The "Where Am I?" feature gives you instant access to important information in case of an emergency. When you touch the vehicle icon on the map screen, the "Where Am I?" feature provides the coordinates (including elevation) of your current position, plus the nearest address and intersections. There are also buttons to help you locate the nearest hospitals, police stations, gas stations, and roadside assistance. You can also save the location for future reference.

Up Ahead: As you travel along your route, the Up Ahead feature constantly indicates the location of nearby businesses, including gas, food, lodging, restrooms, parking, and banks and ATMs. The locations are shown as icons, some with brand logos, and when the icons are touched on the screen, details of the services are displayed, and you are given the opportunity to navigate to that address.

Destination Search: When the Where To? button is pressed, you can use the search tools to find your destination and plan your route. The search tools allow you to search for cities, addresses, intersections, or coordinates. The Search Bar lets you directly enter a category, brand name, address, or city name. The unit's memory stores the last 50 locations you have found so you can quickly find a previous destination.

Trip Planner: You can plan your next RV trip using the Trip Planner app on the device. After selecting your starting location, you can add destinations until you trip planning is complete. The unit can automatically optimize the order of the destinations in your trip to create a shorter, more efficient route. Each trip you plan can be saved in memory until you are ready to make the trip again.

Where I've Been/Trip Log: The Where I've Been application allows you to view your previous routes and places you have stopped on the map. In addition, the device keeps a Trip Log, which is a record of the path you have traveled. The Travel History setting must be enabled in order for the Where I've Been and Trip Log features to function.

GPS Simulator: When indoors, you can activate the built-in GPS simulator and practice using the unit. This turns off the GPS receiver so it's not searching for satellites, saving battery power.

A
Live traffic data: Sends real-time traffic data to your device, such as traffic incidents and delays, construction zones, and road closings (Traffic, page 17). Normally the alert are several miles away. The alerts cannot be adjusted.

Q
Can this unit be charged with a USB connection?
randy  Apr 02, 2021
2 answers
A
Yes it can, but best to use a "high speed" charger. HOWEVER, after ussing this unit for 3 months, I do NOT RECOMMEND purchase of the GPS due to poor accuracy in directions, and total failure to identify severe traffic issues (construction tie-ups lasting MORE THAN AN HOUR, and failure to announce many street names. Lastly, the routing is attrocious! In one instance it gave us a route more than 200 HUNDRED MILES out of our way, sending us literally to the Canadian border for a trip from Scranton, PA to Boston, Ma......luckily we realized where it was sending us and made our own route using good old paper maps and atlas...
john  Apr 03, 2021
A
In theory. I tried to charge mine using a USB insert plugged into a vehicle power port. It would not charge. It may have been the USB insert did not put out sufficient voltage for the Garmin. Perhaps a higher voltage USB insert would work.

Yes, setting select Dash Cam. Tilt the device to align the camera.
darren  Nov 05, 2020

We bought a dash mount instead of using the window mount it came with because we also have the RV camera. But as far as we know, yes you can angle the Garmin on the window mount.

Q
Does the garmin 785 have an address book? Is the 785 brand new, any known issues? I am not a techie but I want a reliable gps for our RV that I don't have to be a techie to operate. I love everything that comes on the 785 but concerned it will be too difficult?

A
Lynn, The 785 allows entry for custom points of interest, as well as voice command for address entry. there is a small learning curve, but once you learn it, Garmin products are pretty easy to use!
