Sony WH-1000XM4
James from SATELLITE BEACH, FL on 7/11/2025
Sound great but it quits charging . Then, Sony makes you do all kinds of crazy steps, resets, firmware, etc. which don't work and they know they have a faulty battery/headphone. So, it will take you days to finally get a return receipt. Keep your money and buy cheap headphones. Crutchfield should just work it out with Sony and exchange them.

Ok but almost requires you use the Sony app
Stephen from HAINESPORT, NJ on 3/28/2025
Listening at home they sound ok but certainly not great. For that purpose the Sennheiser 560HD for the same money is vastly superior. But I didn't buy these headphones to listen at home. I bought them for airline travel. For listening to movies on an airplane the Sony's sound just fine and are pretty comfortable. The noise cancellation works well. Battery life is good. What I very much dislike about these headphones are all the features that are defaulted on. For example, out of the box the headphones will stop playing if you cough or make the slightest sound. They think your trying to start a conversation. I personally find that feature incredibly annoying. There's nothing in the minimalist manual that tells you this will happen and the only way to turn that feature off is to download the app. I did that and a few months later the same thing happened and I had to turn it off again. The right side is also a touch pad that does stuff so you need to learn and try and remember all that. The are other things it will do that may seem odd unless you pour through the app to figure out what is going on. I'd like these headphones a lot more if they just played music and cancelled noise.
Pros: Noise cancelling, comfort, battery life
Cons: Sound quality ok but not great, annoying features that can only be controlled with an app

Well Worth The Price!
Benjamin from Pittsburgh, PA on 3/27/2025
Bought these on the recommendation of Sonny, one of the incredible Crutchfield chat associates. Cannot say enough good things about them! For starters, these have to be some of the most comfortable over-ear headphones I've ever worn. It doesn't even feel like I have headphones on! They also don't heat up on my ears like my JBL 670NC's. As far as audio quality, having the Sony Sound Connect app is an absolute dream come true as it lets me get into the weeds with custom EQ settings tailored to whatever I'm listening to. I can't tell you how many times I've heard the Lord of the Rings prologue from Fellowship of the Ring (seen the movies at least a dozen times) ... but when I listened through these headphones I was hearing intricacies in the score I've never heard before which made me appreciate Howard Shore even more. Same experience when I put on a friend's album where he uses a felt piano ... I thought something was banging around in my office because I could hear every pedal depression and wood click on the recording with these incredible headphones. The one thing I wouldn't do is take these out on a run ... because the noise cancelling is so good, it would be hard to hear ambient noise. I know the Sony app has a way to deal with that, but honestly get a good set of earbuds for exercising. Save these headphones for when you can 100% focus on the music you're listening to. Thanks Sonny for the recommendation! Very glad I have added these to my
Pros: Comfortable ear pads, customizable EQ with Sony Sound Connect app, lightweight.
Cons: If you have small ears, these could be a little too big. Same if you have big hair - these may not sit right on your head. I'm 5' 6" guy with a fairly average head size and (usually) a buzz cut so no issues for me.

Nick from Williamsburg, VA on 1/2/2025
These are nice headphones. The cups are a little shallow compared to the Bose QC headphones but the sound is comparable, and maybe a touch better than the Bose. They are harder to connect to two devices at once and you lose a bit of sound compression quality when you do connect to two. Overall, worth the money and Crutchfield is an outstanding company.
Pros: Good sound, nice design
Cons: Cups a little shallow and touch ears

Originally purchased Bose Quite Comfort headphones but unfortunately this model does not provide noise reduction while using the wired connection. I use the wired connection when listing to movies during flights. This model of Sony headphones has this feature and works great. The Bose headphone sound is a bit warmer and the Sony headphone's vocals are more forward if you prefer that type of sound stage.I purchased both on sale but can longer return the Bose. Overall I prefer the Sony over the Bose.

Upgrade from an old Bose wireless that were not noise cancelling. These are very comfortable and sound great. The app allows you to customize the EQ. Using LDAC on my Windows PC, but they also sound great from Apple AAC.
Pros: Comfort, cool look and feel. Sounds great, customizable through the app.
Cons: Using the LDAC codec on Windows, apparently cannot simultaneously connect to phone to run the app and customize the settings. No big deal though. (You can connect to two devices at once under other circumstances).

Solid connection w/crisp sound.
Robert from SAINT DAVID, AZ on 11/21/2024
I wear these headphones sometimes up to 12+ hours a day and 5 days a week. I enjoy the noise canceling feature too. And mine stay connected at over 250' away from my source (Roku) soundbar through two home walls even when I'm outside on my property inside the cab of my farm tractor 200' away. Of course they also work well off my iPhone and Alexa. My only issue is with the overhead padding as I keep my head shaved. Wishing for an option of a wider pad so that I don't have to wear a baseball hat to distribute the pressure point of the pad.
Pros: Long usage battery life. Great connection to my sources. Ear pads soft & comfortable. Noise canceling.
Cons: Overhead padding for my particular situation.

Great headset
Peter from Glenhaven, CA on 8/21/2024
I was kind of leery of getting this headphone, but to my surprise, it is what I like compared to the previous headphone (of a different brand) I bought. First, it covers your whole ears, not just over the ears. It blocks off noise completely. Most conveniently, I could use my finger to adjust the volume and/or stop/play functions right on the headphone itself. The only set back, am afraid, is that over the long run, one of the sides of the headphone would wear off because of frequent usage of the your finger rubbing it. Other than that, I'm happy with the purchase.
Pros: * Cover whole ears. * Noise cancellations. * Multi-functional "Midas" touch!
Cons: * One side would be wear off faster overtime, in the long run, from finger tapping/touching/rubbing, etc.

Didn't work for me, but maybe for you
Scott from Gilbert, AZ on 8/15/2024
I bought an open box version of these headphones. The connections were stable, comfort was very good, and the headphones were very well made. I didn't evaluate the noise cancelling ability. I'm an older guy, so have a little high end hearing loss. Normally, a small adjustment to the EQ is enough to boost these frequencies to a good level. I was not able to accomplish that with either the headphones or my phone EQ. I tried this with both a wireless and wired connection to my phone and a Sony HD music player. The sound quality otherwise is very good with the bass clear and mids very nice. Possibly it was this set of headphones, not sure. I am returning these.
Pros: Fit, build quality, bass and midrange sound quality
Cons: Lack of sufficient high end

Good Sound, bad controls
Radek from Alexandria, Va on 8/13/2024
I hate the touch pad type of controls on these. It never works when I try to pause or move to another track, but works very well any time I scratch my head or touch it in any other accidental way. It is a pure nonsense, don't try to be so hip Sony, just give us good old buttons that actually work. The other problem is a size. I never knew I have a small head until I bought those. The headband is too big for me, even on the shortest setting (I am a grown up man, 6ft tall). As a result those headphones tend to move off my ears when I move around. I also don't like the low battery report. It is a bit long recording of a woman's voice. When you are listening to the podcast you don't want anyone talking over it. But the sound quality is very good. Since they don't squeeze your head there is no pain even after 5 hours of use, on the other hand don't try to rock your head, headphones will fly off it.
Pros: Very good sound quality, decent battery life, no pain after hours of use.
Cons: Non-working, over-engineered controls, too big.

Love 'em! Smooth, clear sound with plenty of dynamic range and some of the features are beyond, beyond! Love the top to raise/lower volume, or next/previous track. Love that they pause when you take them off or just start talking. Love the app let's you tweak things including pre-set and customizable equalizer, how and when to disable or customize noise canceling, etc.. I had some Sony MD1R that get a 37 vs 82 rating at https://versus.com/en/sony-mdr-1r-vs-sony-wh-1000xm4 The MD1R has higher frequency response [8k VS 4k] but I can't hear that high any more..

John from Waukesha, WI on 6/3/2024
Very pleased with the xm4. It does everything as advertised. I've read review after review, most of which were positive. Reviewers are paid to nitpick. Only criticism I could find was that the xm4s were not up to audiophile sound quality. My ears must not be that advanced because I found the sound quality of my xm4 to be the best I've heard. Excellent sound separation. I could actually understand the words of songs for the first time since my youth. I cannot say what audiophile headphones sound like but I know the difference between $250 and $1700. The xm4s are superb. So much so that I'm now looking to buy a set for my spouse.
Pros: Excellent sound quality and soundstage presentation. Hate to repeat myself but was amazed that I could understand the words of the songs.
Cons: Sony app which controls the headphones are a little difficult to understand initially. I had to experiment a bit.

how to connect and listen is a mystery
Elizabeth from Santa Barbara, CA on 1/2/2024
I have never had a wireless headphone before and bought this, 1000XM4, a x-mas present to myself, on the basis of reviews for its sound quality and comfort. (I considered, at great length, several others, including AirPods2 pro.) The comfort is great, but I don't know about the sound quality: I have not figured how to connect and operate it. There is no User Manual about how to operate and find music and/or audiobooks and/or anything so I have given up. There's a page of graphics, Sony saving money, I guess, to not have a printed user manual, about setting it up? ...I did go online, looking for Sony instructions -- should have known better since I do have a Sony mirrorless cam (A6500) - exc. camera, just awful operating menu - and I will never get another Sony cam and should have figured that that audio equipment would be similar.

Underwhelming Upgrade
Brett from Placitas, NM on 12/2/2023
I still own a pair of Sony's first generation MDR-1000X headphones, which are the great-grandfather of the WH-1000XM4. I loved them and they still sound great, but after 7 years they are scuffed and dirty and the foam is falling apart. I was too cheap to pay full price for the latest generation XM5 headphones, so I decided to replace them with the XM4. The basic design is the same, with touch-pad controls on the right ear cup. Bluetooth pairing with my phone and television was quick and simple. The sound is good, but not any better than the old MDR-1000X. To my ears the new phones have a slightly better response at the higher frequencies, but the older headphones lend a mellow roundness to the sound that I prefer. There are several new features that I was excited to try out. First, a software app that allows custom equalizer settings. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. No matter what settings I program, the sound from the headphones does not change at all. Second, these phones allow use of voice assistants like Google and Alexa. You press the "custom" button on the left ear cup, and speak your command. This seems to work pretty well with Alexa, but the "custom" button is also used to control the noise cancelling modes. If you program it (via the app) to ring for Alexa, you can't control the NC modes any more. The sound and NC are what I would expect from Sony at this price point. Overall, these are fine phones, but no better than great grandp
Pros: Very light and comfortable, great sound and noise cancellation.
Cons: No improvement in sound or noise cancellation over previous generations. The app seems to be nothing more than a way for Sony to gather your personal info and listening preferences, since the equalizer settings do not work. These phone need a third button on the ear cup so that voice assistants can be used without sacrificing control over the noise cancelling modes.

Great before the battery issue started
Em from NEW YORK, NY on 11/5/2023
This almost gave me a solid 2 years. Several weeks before the the 2-year mark, an annoying battery issue started that affected almost everyone (do a search for 1000xm4 uneven battery drain ). Tons of community posts and forum comments about this issue and still it hasn't been addressed. The situation, each earbud yields a battery percentage, they would start out like 99%. After a couple uses, it would be something like left earbud: 80% vs right earbud: 68%. Eventually, I would get 40% on the left and 18% on the right. This significantly decreases that actual hours of usage if the right earbud one has no power left. The theory going around is one of their firmware updates bricked the battery. I'm a couple months past the official warranty and at the time of this writing probably barely past the extended 1-year warranty my credit card grants me. I really hope Sony can address this issue, or they're gonna have a class-action lawsuit soon.
Pros: Comfort, ease of use, equalizer
Cons: Known battery issue where the right earbud drains significantly faster than the left.

I owned the XM3's for a few years and enjoyed them quite well. Recently, I was forced to upgrade to the XM4 and I'm very impressed with the added features and sound quality. I fly a lot and these headphones take sound canceling to the next level with comfort and high-fidelity that put Bose back on the shelf like ol days, Sony can't be beat for the price.
Pros: Balance of all things good at this price point.
Cons: They're not exotic they're just solid and dependable

They sound good period. My home system is Cambridge Audio, Bower Wilkens and these head phones make me put them on instead of my B&W's. Simply put no noise to interfere with the quality of sound. Great headphones for the money. Prefer them over my Bose earbuds which cost more money.
Pros: Great

New York City
Paula from New York City on 5/15/2023
I wish I had done more research before purchasing these. I find Bluetooth technology an unreliable pain to begin with, but I needed Bluetooth headphones for certain devices (I'm in the classical music business). The pairing with my laptop is a pain; and I notice that if you take them off for a few minutes, they "unpair" automatically. Also, I'm not sure the audio for classical music is half as good as my plug-in BOSE (no Bluetooth). They aren't comfortable, which surprised me, so wearing them for long periods of time is out. Lastly the design is absurd: the swipe RH headphone for volume isn't a brilliant idea; and the on-off- and other controls on the LH headphone are impossible to see. Yes, you feel the buttons on the left side headphone, but....In short: my bad.

Customer service is not dead.
Michael from Wilmington, NC on 4/17/2023
Trying to find info on products has become a nightmare. Each site has a different #1. Therefore I called and was lucky to have Dante answer the phone. I explained my situation and what I was trying to accomplish, nothing large but enough to be overwhelming without specs. I told him that it was his job to find what I wanted given the parameters. I always ask sales people what they would buy for them selves. Challenge accepted. We explored several options and he would forward the spec sheet to me to compare with each other. Finally narrowing it down to one unit. I was able to pay him and arrange shipping. Mission accomplished. Now the time frame for this to happen according to my phone was 32 min 9sec. The purchase was a pair of noise canceling headphones, wireless of course, Sony WH-1000XM4. You would not get this type of expertise or service is big box stores. Thank you Dante for the wonderful experience. Mike S
Pros: Excellent sound, pics up things even my 11.1.4 sound bar misses. Better specs. Very pleased
Cons: Took a while to get synced and set up but worth the effort

Very comfortable and light weight for their size. Great looking quality. Nice packaging and storage case. Don't get very loud. Can easily listen at full volume without discomfort. App control is not very good or as intuitive as I would like. Little to no difference in different noise cancelation settings. Sound is good but not audiophile quality or marginally better then headphones costing half the price.
Pros: Comfort Quality Style Battery
Cons: Price App Volume

Stands out for comfort & Noise Cancellation with "very good" sound
Joe from De Soto, KS on 2/11/2023
If you're buying for noise cancellation for travel (comfort, fit, cancellation effectiveness, battery life etc) then very strong recommendation. Sound is "very good" as in better than many/most in this price range, and perhaps for the average user, very comfortable and pleasant to use for long listening periods. If you're an audiophile looking for top end sound then maybe keep looking. I've never used the cable connection (frequency response improves to 5-20KHz) but I've sure appreciated them on planes / airports. Voice use for calls is pretty good (I think airpods are better voice quality wise) tho these might be better in really loud environments since both you and the person on the other end benefit from the better noise cancellation. Cons: While I like the idea of the cup your hand over right ear to turn off cancellation (for speaking to someone, hearing something in the room, etc.) it seems to trigger way to often if I clear my throat, etc. (tries to sense you speaking and auto-stop the noise cancellation) - tries to sense your activity mode and I guess I trip it up alot. You can adjust this in the app but it never quite behaves like I'd like (I'm often using this in the woodshop with noises that trigger this) -- worse, it often pauses the music "for your convenience" when doing so, so I wind up turning all that off alot. So you may want to review that feature and ensure it fits for you. Speaking of the app, otherwise it's quite good & frequent up
Pros: Noise Cancellation is top notch Comfort Battery life (++) 2 input sources at once is handy Sony specific DSEE (compression enhancement) mode does help with clarity App is flexible and easy
Cons: auto-pause for noise cancellation feature is a bit annoying at times, requires fiddling in the app to get it "just right" Tho sound is very good and balanced, it's not "off the chart" for audiophiles given the price range if that's your main objective. Strangely, the headphones connect/reconnect quickly and that aspect works great, but opening the app (iphone) is sometimes oddly sluggish.

Not worth the price
Scott from Portland, OR on 2/5/2023
These headphones are "Meh..." they are not loud at all. Bass isnt very powerful either. Treble response is good but only if you go hard wired. I have an external sound card Creative Sound Blaster X G5 with a dedicated headphones amplifier. i can get the headphones pretty loud (I like it loud) but i just cant get behind these headphones and recommend them. they are too weak and are not worth the price. they are constructed well, they are comfortable but that is it. if you have them plugged into the charger you cannot power them up at the same time. I have a set of Razer Nari Ultimates with Heptic Feedback and the Razers whip the snot out of the sonys. More powerful, louder, bass is deeper, you can run them while plugged into the charger and are actually more comfortable plus they are half the price of the sonys. my problem with the razers are the volume pots are damaged. i thought i'd upgrade to the sonys but i think they are going back.
Pros: comfortable, battery life is good
Cons: weak, not very loud, cannot run them while on the charger (Plugged in) bass is weak

Stops working after a year
Nicholas from RICHARDSON, TX on 2/1/2023
DO NOT BUY if you want to use the noise cancelling for more than a year. After a year of use, the right speaker starts making a loud whining noise due to feedback in the noise cancelling. Sony support had me send it to them and they sent me a warranty replacement, but after a year with that replacement, the exact same issue started happening. A friend of mine who also got this model said they had it happen too, just the same as me. Extremely disappointing. I am considering this entire model line as defective, it is way too expensive to only last a year.
Pros: Noise cancelling works well for the first year
Cons: Starts making a loud whining noise on the right side after a year

A great wireless, noise canceling option for frequent travelers
Jason from Laurel, MD on 1/3/2023
I cross-shopped the XM4s with the XM5s. I ended up going with the XM4s as they were slightly cheaper, and they folded to a smaller footprint-though in practice, the size difference of the case between the XM4 and XM5 is negligible. The audio profile, while not amazing, is solid. My primary use case will be for travel, and I expect that they will do quite nicely. I did have a twinge of regret when I heard the XM5s, as they are cleaner from an audio standpoint, but the XM4s fit my head well and slide into my travel bag perfectly. All in all, I'm satisfied with my purchase and will be even more so if they hold up to the stresses of travel for multiple years.
Pros: Above average noise cancellation Above average sound quality Supports multiple Bluetooth devices Customizable audio profile via app Reasonably small footprint when folded inside case Bonus points for including all cables and adapters for charging and airplane audio
Cons: Not quite as good as the XM5 The touch controls on the right ear cup are fussy and respond to touch inconsistently Folding design sometimes feels a little "loose," cheap, and unstable in your hand (feels fine on your head)

Steven from Pikesville, MD on 12/6/2022
This is my first pair of NC headphones. Sony really knows their business when it comes to wireless headphones with NC. They sound really great wirelessly when you take advantage of the Sony connect app and adjust the equalization to your preference. They are not so good when you plug them in to your audio source, in my opinion. Those who do question the sound quality need to remember, these headphones are wireless with bluetooth, DAC and headphone amp all in one. I'll go wired with Sennheiser when I need more.
Pros: Great sound, comfortable, great battery life, noise cancelling is good.
Cons: Do not sound good when tethered to audio source, in my opinion.

Edward from Renton, WA on 11/30/2022
Noise cancelling feature works very well. However, I'm very disappointed by the sound quality. Low end is weak and doesn't extend very deep. Upper frequencies are also subdued. There is an equalizer function that works on the Sony headphone app, but as far as I can tell it only works using a Bluetooth connection; I have a headphone jack on my phone and I'd prefer to connect via wire, which disables the equalizer.
Pros: Noise cancellation is excellent Comfortable to wear
Cons: Poor sound quality

Great Bluetooth Headphones!
Jack from Gresham, OR on 9/30/2022
I purchased the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones to use when traveling and to use with my Sony TV when I'm at home. These Sony headphones are great for travel! They're comfortable, have a great battery life, outstanding noise reduction and the Sony headphone app allowed me to adjust the sound to my preferred sound profile. What I'm most excited about is the ability to use these headphones wirelessly with my Sony TV via Bluetooth. The connection was easy, the sound is great, the Bluetooth signal is strong, and there is no perceptible latency (lag) between the headphones and the video! A special thanks to Ace at Crutchfield for helping me with this purchase! The transaction was easy and the shipping was fast.
Pros: Comfortable, great sound, long battery life, solid Bluetooth connectivity, outstanding noise reduction, and they work great with Sony TV
Cons: None found so far.

Great Headphones. The noise cancellation really helps me focus at work. I can't wait to use them when traveling by plane. Note: They come with a 9-inch USB charging cord that is WORTHLESS (I don't have any outlets that are close enough to the counter to use it). Get a 3-foot long USB-A to USB-C charging cable.
Pros: Super comfortable, lightweight, great sound, easy to use.
Cons: Charging cord is useless.

I hate these headphones. Got these for my partner to use for computer gaming. The noise canceling is so good that I fell in the bathroom 20 feet from him and was yelling for help to get untangled from my traitorous pants as my cat looked down upon me from the bathtub with joy in the thought that today was the day he got to feast upon me and my partner was clueless to the chaos surrounding him. I have had entire conversations with him before realizing that he had no clue that I was even speaking. I walk into the room as loudly as possible and have to prepare myself for his ninja moves when he realizes a human has suddenly appeared since he is so lost in the world of Dungeons and Donkeys or whatever and these headphones are so excellent at canceling outside noise that he gets too sucked in. He loves them, great sound and comfort. They definitely do what they are meant to.
Pros: great sound, comfort, noise canceling is out of this world
Cons: I miss being able to annoy my partner as he games

Bradley from Glen Ellyn, IL on 6/27/2022
Didn't have an opportunity to demo these babies so I went with the various reviews thumbs up and risked a purchase. It helped that Crutchfield had them on sale, not gonna lie. So far so darn good. Tidal Bluetooth from an Android phone sounds good with a clean treble and solid but not overpowering bass. The true test of the noise-canceling for me will be air travel but health and Covid are preventing that. In my 100 year-old house, the retro-fitted air conditioner noise is completely gone. Haven't tried them with the provided cord yet but that option was definitely a major plus in choosing this over the Bose.

Philip from Lititz, PA on 5/9/2022
I've been listening to the WH-1000XM4 for about one week at time of writing this review. Outstanding noise cancelling performance. Very comfortable headphone. The app is decent--the/an EQ is a must. Out of the box, these headphones did not sound good to me when streaming on my iPhone. I paired them with my PC (ALAC music files) and, after some fussing with the EQ on my computer, got them sounding pretty decent to my ears. The bass can very easily get overwhelming, producing a muddying effect. This is one area where an EQ helps. The music on the whole seems a bit veiled to my ears, even after EQ'ing. I certainly didn't go into these headphones with the expectation of audiophile level sound quality. My first priority was noise cancelling, and my second priority was good sound. So far, that seems to be what I got. I must say, though, that at this price, I'm admittedly still somewhat on the fence about this headphone.
Pros: Noise cancelling performance. Comfortability. Sound quality ok to good.

Best Noise cancelling Headphones on the market
Nathan Tyler from NORTON, VA on 4/12/2022
Best Noise canceling headphones on the market, period. I own a pair of the WH-1000XM3's and tried these out for a few weeks, same fantastic sound, even better Noise cancellation, neat feature is the ability to pause by removing them from your ears, simple but very useful, one I'm not crazy about personally is the adaptive noise cancelling, I prefer to set the level of noise cancellation manually and then adjust as needed. Luckily Sony is pretty cool and has an app were there are a lot of controls for the headphones where you can turn the adaptive cancellation off, or adjust the intensity of it, EQ settings, an optimizer for the noise cancellation that adjust for noises around, air pressure, and other factors. Battery life is insane, I use my XM3's every night of my life and charge them maybe once every other week, and these have an even longer battery life, not much longer but shoot, I was already barely charging the XM3's.
Pros: Great sound, good noise cancelling dare I say as good as Bose if not better, fantastic battery life.
Cons: Only complaint and it's a minor one, wish the charging cable was longer, the one they include is super short, not a big deal though I have several USB-C cables.

My First Pair of Headphones!
This was my first ever "big" purchase on an electronic device and these were 1000% worth the money I spent! I wanted a pair of headphones that were noise canceling because I get distracted easily with outside noises, and the Sony WH-1000MX4 do the job PERFECTLY! The noice canceling is amazing, the headphones are comfy (they don't squish my ears and I don't have a headache from them after wearing them for a while), and the music quality is superb! I am really happy with the pair I purchased and am excited to continue to use them for the years to come... :) I would totally recommend to those looking for headphones that have good quality sound and noise canceling!
Pros: -great noise canceling, the few times I do hear things going on "outside" it's very, very distant/muted -sound quality is fantastic (it's like I'm in a concert!) the music I listen to I can hear the instruments and the beat so clearly
Cons: honestly, none!

Buyers Beware
Guest from Ft Mitchell, KY on 3/26/2022
Something that nobody seems to be mentioning - these wireless headphones have one significant "Achilles heel" - that is - your "system" must have Bluetooth 5.0 in order to work properly - this is something I did not know - I have a late 2015 iMac and I tried these headphones - sounded great on the wired connection - but very poor performance on the wireless connection - had to send them back - so - buyers beware . . .
Pros: Sound Great With Wired Connection
Cons: Your "Device" Must Have Bluetooth 5.0 Inorder To Work Properly - May Not Work With Older Devices . . .

Though I haven't given these phones the full 50 hour break in period, I am most impressed with their sound. I also have not yet taken the time to fully incorporate the app and its ability to improve upon my experience. That being said its hard to imagine a better value in headphones than the WH1000XM4. The most annoying aspect has been the random drop out where the music just stops as I am walking about. I have tried to find a way to eliminate this but have failed thus far. If I am seated on an airplane with Noise cancelling engaged these are a dream. As I walk around the house or airport the random millisecond drops outs are annoying.

If you own a Samsung Tv and plan to use these headphones read this
Crutchfield customer from Scottsdale, AZ on 1/28/2022
If you have a Samsung tv and plan to use these headphones to listen, think twice. I have 3 Samsung tvs oldest being 2 years old. On all three the sound does not match the picture. I've updated software and tried dozens of setting configurations. They just don't connect to Samsung tvs well. Every other device, iPad, laptop, phone flawless. For me that's a deal breaker. Google this problem. No fix available. Otherwise these are great sounding headphone with lots of features and adjustments. One fatal flaw, This is not an issue with Crutchfield as always they are awesome!

Sony WH-1000XM4
Stephen from Waltham, MA on 1/28/2022
Really good active noise cancelling. The sound, out of the box, is quite neutral. You can warm it up with the CLEAN BASS setting in the Sony app. Fit and finish are great! Despite the plastic construction, the headphones feel premium. Two small gripes: 1.) You can't use the headphones when they're charging. 2.) The touch sensor for controls is finicky, I would have preferred buttons, but I pretty much use my phone for volume and seeking anyway. Otherwise, really love these!
Pros: Neutral, clean sound Excellent active noice cancelling
Cons: Touch interface on right ear cup can be finicky Cannot use while charging

spend some to gain some
Jonathan from Saipan on 1/25/2022
These headphones are the priciest pair I have ever bought in my life and I have no regrets. Of course nothing is perfect. I am happy with the features and the comfort while using the XM4. For those single people out there, these are perfect for binge watching on mobile devices. Why spend hundreds on a sound system? Also, when the wifey and kiddos are asleep these are perfect as well for binge watching. The bass is impressive, the vocals are clear, the free downloadable app is fantastic. They work great for home, work and travel.
Pros: Better bass response than most headphones. great for watching on mobile phones. comfortable. has a carrying case while some only have bags. Customizable features on Sony Connect App
Cons: After a while you will start sweating around the muffs. I heard this does not happen to Beats owners [top model]. I wonder if that is true or hype talk?

Sony-Mandated "Beeps" Ruin Listen Experience
Crutchfield customer from Los Angeles, CA on 1/24/2022
A bizarre and inexplicable design feature may make an otherwise excellent product unusable for many. A very loud "BEEP" is triggered every time you touch or use any of the audio controls on the headphones. Every volume adjustment, FF, rewind or pause is accompanied with a loud "BEEP", spoiling whatever you are listening to. There is no way to turn it off, or even reduce the volume of the Beep. I should have read the user forums complaining of this flaw before buying. Otherwise, the sound is great, and they are comfortable. But having music interrupted every time you touch the headphones defeats the purpose.
Pros: Great sound Comfortable
Cons: Beeps every time you use any audio control Beeps cannot be disabled

Great Headphone
Glenn from Elkton, MD on 1/8/2022
I had my concerns about the sound quality of a wireless headphones, especially Blue tooth connected ones; and coming from the Beyerdynamic T-1 and T-5 camp with the best cables on them. However, once again Sony's technology has really shined on these lightweight wireless headphones. Furthermore the sound is beyond amazing, especially using the surround sound of the quad feature playing from Amazon music app. I was beyond amazed at the sound of these Sony Headphones. I would highly recommend them and use them with the apps. It really works great on Smartphones too. The battery last a long time also. The charging cable is too short, but that' my only complaint!
Pros: Great sound and battery life
Cons: charging cable too short

Pros: Best battery and charging, crazy noise cancelation, customize sound. You want bass, turn it up!
Cons: Color options

Christopher from Dickson TN on 1/8/2022
This is a great pair of headphones. I purchased before taking a few flights during the holidays and they were fantastic. The padding around the ears and head band is very comfortable....The real test is going to be its longevity. Will this material hold up. I'm using these mostly in the office which is a sea of cubicles and I can say the sound cancellation works pretty well and they have fantastic battery life.
Pros: Comfortable, Great battery life, Ease of use, Connects to 2 bluetooth devices simultaneously.

It's a Sony XM4 & no other options
Crutchfield customer from San Bernardino, CA on 12/17/2021
I can't say more what others have already said. I like it's features from the Sony app. Love listening to bluetooth but like it better wired although I listen to it in BT mode 99% of the time because I have other wired headphones. Better frequency range wired. Bought the first outside Crutchfield but bought the next two from Crutchfield as gifts for family members.
Pros: Light, comfy to wear for long periods, BT range, wired sound reproduction ( using other devices to accentuate it's tone capabilities) although its' BT is sufficient . In BT mode, mids and treble are excellent but bass could slightly have a bit more emphasis), Sony app, headphone case, sound reproduction & overall design
Cons: Short charging cable. Looks like there is still more room inside the case for a longer charging cable. A foot long one instead of 8 total inches would have not made much of a price difference. What is up with that Sony! You started great but had to mess it up with a short cable.

Unbeatable for the price
Crutchfield customer from Dayton, OH on 12/11/2021
For the money, especially at the reduced holiday price, these are great wireless (Bluetooth) headphones. The noise cancellation is superb. You must use the app and the customizable equalizer settings however to get the most out of them. Sony's 360° surround sound is a really cool feature too but it only works on a few music streaming platforms, Tidal being one of those. Keep in mind that these are only LDAC/AAC capable. Sony dropped the aptX/aptXhd capability that's found on the previous model but that can be forgiven as they still sound great. These headphones are also feature rich. You can just start talking or tap the right ear piece to instantly silence the music and listen to outside conversations thru a built-in microphone. They're light, comfortable to wear and fit great on my normally-sized ears. They might be a bit tight for someone with very large ears however. As someone who owns high-end audiophile equipment, I can certainly recommend them, especially for the price.

Very comfortable, can have them on for hours. Excellent noise cancelling, like how that noise cancelling can be adjusted to the place you are on. Sony also enhanced the distance range without dropouts. Sound quality is very good and can be adjusted manually to my taste through the included equalizer (presets included also); the sound stage is excellent, instruments and voices are placed clearly where they should be. Been using them since received and battery life is still at 70%. Highly recommend this headphones.

Well worth it
Lee from DOUGLASVILLE, GA on 12/2/2021
These have been the best headphones I have ever gotten. Using Airpods daily and especially when going to the gym then switching to these have been a massive upgrade. In the companion app it allows you to customize the sound to best suited your taste. The touch features are simple and very responsive. The most fascinating gesture is when you cup the right side of the headphone, and it cancels the noise canceling and reduces the sound to one letting in all ambient sound without having to stop the music or pull out your phone. the only downside to these headphones is while you can have two devices connected simultaneously it will connect to both. For instance, I had to take a phone call while the family was watching tv. So, I connected the headphones to my phone and answered normally. It was only when the phone call ended and I removed the headphones, I noticed the tv had no sound. So, while not a true downside I would say it could be an inconvenience at most. Overall, they have been a great experience and I recommend them to casual and experienced listeners alike. 10/10

Nice Headphones
Crutchfield customer from Medford, OR on 12/2/2021
Overall these are good. Great Mids and Highs. They are a little off on the Bass, maybe a little heavy, not nearly as bad as Beats or Bose but it's there. They have excellent noise blocking. Only real negative is having to load an app, create an account, etc... this is really annoying I wouldn't have selected them if I had known.
Pros: Convenient, good sound in the Mid and High range, Sold Sony Product, Comfortable.
Cons: Have to load an app and create an account, Bass is a little off for Audiophile ears but relatively minor.

Sony XM4's Good NOT Great
Lee from Lisbon, ND on 11/24/2021
These are good headphones. Traded up from a 14 year old pair of Bose wired quiet comfort 2 Noise Cancelling headphones. I'm old and do not own a smart phone, so I can't download and or use the APP that is available for these Sony's. I'm just using a laptop with Bluetooth. Out of the box these did NOT sound as good as my old quiet comfort 2's. The bass was fine, but I could not hear some of the detail I could on the old Bose. I grew up in the 70's with hi-fi and back then I used a graphic equalizer to make my Pioneer HPM-100's sing. I could tell these new Sony's had the potential to sound much better and since I can't access the equalizer available through the APP, I splurged and purchased and downloaded "Equalizer Pro" software for $30.00. This is a good equalizer for Windows 10 on a laptop. I toggled thru all the default equalizer settings to get a feel for what it could do. Then I created my own custom equalizer setting for each frequency just for these Sony's. Now they are fine tuned and sounding better. So for all you smartphone users, during your initial setup, I recommend taking the time to use the equalizer available on the APP and tune these for your ears. The only issue I have is sometimes the sound just shuts off. I can't tell if this is the bluetooth signal cutting out or if the "speak to chat" function is inadvertently kicking on? I can't turn "speak to chat" off without the APP. If I turn the phones off and back on they start playing again immediately.
Pros: Very Comfortable Sound can be greatly adjusted using equalizer settings Noise cancellation is good
Cons: Possibly to many features that can add unnecessary complexity and issues to deal with. Can't turn off features or make adjustments without the APP. There should be an alternative way to access and adjust all the options and features manually. When are APPS going to be available for laptops? These are good headphones, but they are over hyped in many of the articles and professional reviews. Need to concentrate more on sound quality and user friendly simplicity rather than too many features.

Great sound, Good noise-cancelling
Crutchfield customer from Toledo, OH on 11/9/2021
This is my first attempt going outside the Bose brand. I've had Bose noise cancelling over the ear headphones for a very long time. I wanted to try a new brand because much of the music I listen to is very base-filled, which Bose doesn't handle so well, especially when it comes to some of the hip-hop music I listen to. That being said, Sony's headphones really play music on a wonderful level and I've been very satisfied with them. The noise-cancelling is good, not awesome. Hence the four stars versus five. Bose really is the best in the noise-cancelling market but I would definitely say these headphones handle the music quality better, at least for the style of music I listen to. Bottom line, if you listen to a lot of instrumentals, go with Bose, if you listen to a lot of bass, go to Sony.
Pros: Great sound, better than Bose for bass.
Cons: Noise-cancelling not as good as Bose.

A great impulse buy
Crutchfield customer from Pleasant Hill, CA on 11/5/2021
My old Sennheiser headphones (also purchased from Crutchfield) had taken a bit of a beating so I decided almost on impulse to check to what else might be available. My timing was good: there were on sale, $100 off ending that day. Followed my second impulse of the day and ordered them. I'm very glad I did. The sound quality is astonishing. I played a few favorites to test them out ("I'm Waiting for My Man" by the Velvet Underground, John Coltrane's "Blue Train", some lo-fi hip hop). It was like I was hearing them for the first time. Incredibly detailed and clear. The noise canceling is far better than my Sennheiser Momentum headphones and Sony's are more comfortable. (I have a big head - one size fits all hats never fit and XLs in sized hate rarely do. So I feel them a little more than someone with a normal noggin might, but they are very comfortable for long wearing. The software takes a little getting used to and I may turn off certain features. And I haven't had time to go through everything yet. But my early response is that these are fantastic head phones that are well worth the full price let along the sale price.
Pros: Comfortable, incredible sound and the best noise cancelling I've heard (or haven't heard, depending on how you look at it.)
Cons: I'm sure the features in the software are good and will be useful to most people. I find it a little intrusive and unnecessary. I'm sure that mine is an idiosyncratic opinion, but the level of smart controls for my noise cancelling Apple Air Pods is about right for my needs.

This was my first purchase of a Sony branded headphone. I am very satisfied with the sound clarity and the sound cancellation features. The over all comfort of the headphones on my head has been a pleasant surprise for me as I had read a few previous reviews where some had complained that they were rather tight fitting and uncomfortable for people wearing glasses. That has not been my experience whatsoever.
Pros: Very comfortable fit, excellent sound clarity
Cons: The control buttons are a bit small and the headphone didn't come with a detailed user manual

Great sound, smart noise canceling
Crutchfield customer from Big Stone Gap, VA on 9/29/2021
Great headphones overall. Noise canceling is the best I have heard for travel or loud droning sounds. The adaptive technology is great because I frequently walk in the mornings and evenings and if I need to talk to someone passing the noise canceling will shut off while I am talking automatically. Pairs excellently for Bluetooth especially watching TV late at night on my Sony TV. Of course Sony doesn't disappoint in sound quality. Awesome upgrade feom already great Sennheiser wireless headphones
Harry from BIRMINGHAM, AL on 9/16/2021
I upgraded from a pair of five year old Sennheiser Momentum2.0 headphones. These raise the bar. Battery life is much better. Noise cancellation is further refined. The setting that turns off NC when you speak so that you can both hear and talk is wonderful. This comes in handy especially on airplanes. The touch area on the right headphone that lets you control the volume, etc. is just pure genius. And finally the most important part, the sound quality of treble, mids and bass is so well done. No issues at all with comfort. These feel great and I have worn them on a plane trip and when relaxing at home. I would recommend resetting the sound when flying versus when at home since the air pressure will be different. This just takes a few seconds and is easy. I would buy these again for sure.
Pros: Comfortable with great noise cancelling and feature heavy
Cons: Cost

Speak to chat ruins this product, do not buy it. While there headphones will work when they want to, the speak to chat options makes them so anoying that I would not buy them again with some else's money. I work in a high desble area for 12 hours at a shot. It's bad enough that I have to be in that envrnment, now thanks to my "hearing protection" I am sentence to silence the entire shift because if I make a sound the stupid headphones turn off. But I know your going to say that the feature can be turned off with your phone. But if you are in an area where phones / cameras are not allowed then you are hosed. the feature randomly turns it's self on as if it knows what you want, verses what you set them for. Combine that with the annoyance of having to "tap" the things (while there are buttons on the left, Some fool decided that this feature is to be independant of them) to get it to turnback on
Pros:
Cons: speak to chat (makes this product useless

JOHN from Macedonia, OH on 5/16/2021
To begin with, my experience dealing with Crutchfield has been nothing short of stellar for many, many years, and that still holds true! Now, to the headphones. I had been wanting something for a while to use when cutting grass. After doing some research, and a few years of indecision, I zeroed in on these based on the reviews from here as well as other sources on the web. I am really surprised at how good music sounds and the active noise cancelling works really well. I have only paired them with my Pixel 5 and everything works flawlessly. (Both devices use the latest BT tech.) I don't really intend to connect them to multiple devices, but they do have multi point technology, so I'm not able to comment on that feature. As for the app that goes along with them, there are a lot of mixed reviews. It does what I need it to do and then some, so no complaints on my part. As for comfort, they are, as many reviewers have said, very light and comfortable. No buyers remorse here! Over all, I would recommend these headphones to anybody considering such a purchase.
Pros: Good sound with music. Good noise cancelling. Long battery life. Comfortable.
Cons: None that I have experienced.

I had to go to work in a cube farm. The sound of 15 people talking all the time was very distracting. I bought the Sony headset and I can now work in peace. I use it for conference/Skype calls and the sound quality is excellent. the microphone works perfectly. Music sounds great also, and the noise cancelling is great. I would highly recommend this pair of headphones for anyone looking for quality fit, sound and a little peace from the noise in their surroundings.
Pros: Noise cancelling is superb Microphone works great Music quality is excellent Fits perfectly Nice case and accessories

Super comfortable, sound great, I couldn't be happier. I wear these for extended periods of time while working in my studio and also at home after my son goes to bed. My ears never get tired of having them on. The noise canceling is very impressive with much less I'll act to sound quality than a lot of others I've used. The app is very helpful for setting the eq to get the best sound for your tastes and listening habits.

GREAT headphones
Crutchfield customer from Marlborough, MA on 5/9/2021
I was never a "headphones type of person" until I tried these. Great sound and comfort. Bluetooth pairing is easy. They do not work with my Yamaha RX-V6A home theater receiver, sound is continuously "stuttering." There appears to be a compatibility issue. I am OK using a cable connection in my theater. Perhaps a future firmware upgrade will address the issue. They work just fine with other devices.
Pros: Comfort Multi-device connection Sound quality Speak-to-chat feature
Cons: Does not work with my Yamaha RX-V6A receiver. There's constant "stuttering."

The noise cancelling is great on these, as is the sound quality. I'm still figuring out some of the features, but I like having the app to control things like ambient noise. The headphones are comfortable on my ears, but for some reason the top that goes over my head is uncomfortable after wearing them for a bit and I have to move it around frequently. They're lightweight, but honestly for the price I thought they'd be more comfortable.
Pros: Great noise cancelling and sound quality
Cons: Not as comfortable as I thought they'd be.

Great Multi-Purpose Headphones
Spencer from Lisle, IL on 4/9/2021
Great headphones all around! I wanted something good for active music listening (especially in noisy environments) but also something that could support calls and passive listening. I've been quite satisfied with the sound, and have been able to tune to my music preferences with Headphones Connect (easy to use). They can be bass-heavy for rock sounds, but that can be EQd out. There is also some sharpness that can be sometimes fatiguing in the higher mids, but overall very clear with good imaging. My two gripes: 1.) the proximity sensor hasn't worked great, it pauses when I remove the headphones but will often play again laying against my neck. Seems to need to be tuned to a shorter distance to prevent that. 2.) The call quality with my Dell laptop (Teams, Jabber) can be pretty bad at times but this may be the laptop's bluetooth in part. I compared the built-in laptop mics vs. the XM4 mics and the laptop was much clearer. When I have the output device set to the XM4 headset, sounds are warbly and unclear, but if I set it to the normal headphones the mic is disabled. They definitely get the job done with calls, just not the quality I expected. Other than that, I'm very happy with the XM4 and they do what I need them to!
Pros: Excellent ANC Great sound quality Customizable functions and sound Comfortable Work for calls Portable
Cons: Poor bluetooth call quality (mic and headphones) Proximity sensor response

Love the headphones, wore them for an hour straight in the hot sun before I needed to air my ears out for a minute. I wish the app was more intuitive as I realized I wasn't using the noise canceling feature properly after a week of use. I've also had issues with the "next" or volume buttons (always end up pausing instead). Lastly, the microphone isn't great as is...i believe there's a trick to getting it right. Tldr: comfortable but need some figuring out

Really Like the Sony WH-1000XM4 Headset
Crutchfield customer from Beaumont, TX on 4/4/2021
I really like the Sony WH-1000XM4. This is the first wireless and noise canceling headset that I have ever used. Not being familiar with the many features of this headset, I went to the online user guide (https://rd1.sony.net/help/mdr/wh1000xm4/h_zz/). The guide is quite extensive. I am glad that I spent a number of hours reviewing the information there. It helped me set up the headset and to determine what features I want to use. In my opinion, the sound quality of the headset is excellent and the headset is very comfortable. Using Bluetooth, I easily connected the headset to my digital music player and to my iPhone 11. The charging cable is too short. However, I found that other USB-A to USB-C cables that are much longer can be used to charge the headset.
Pros: Sound quality and comfort

Incredible Upgrade
Crutchfield customer from Waterloo, IA on 3/30/2021
Absolutely amazing how much of an improvement these are over my older mid-range noise cancelling headphones. My old ones still work well, but are showing their age, so I got these when they were on sale. I would not have thought the noise cancellation could have gotten that much better without completely wrapping your ear. I've used active noise cancelling shooting muffs and chainsaw muffs for years. I have had a couple pairs of on/over the ear noise cancelling wired/bluetooth headsets, and some ear buds. These XM4s blow everything completely out of the water. Extremely glad I got them. With my most recent set, they did well on airplane travel, but I still felt a lot of the ambient noise. I had used the provided Bose headsets in business class international on several occasions and enjoyed them, but never felt they were that much better than my older set to warrant buying them. I'm sure the new Bose are about the same as these, at least most all of the reviews say so, but I am very much looking forward to my next plane trip to have these with me.
Pros: Lightweight Incredible noise cancelling

Worth the money
Crutchfield customer from Oviedo, FL on 3/29/2021
Fantastic product! Never been a big fan of ACN headphones and earbuds are not my thing. But I'm suffering physically and mentally from the noise the 'ultra quiet' pool heater my next door neighbor installed. Constant low frequency noise supported by pump running at 3200rpm. In Short - SONY headphones did the job! I'm not entirely sure if this is due to the headphones software allowing on demand calibration or just overall great ANC design on this set but the noise is gone as soon as ANC is on. These are quite comfortable to wear, I wouldn't run in them or jog but not a problem walking around . The band is on a short side. The pads get warm around the ear but still reasonable and I'm yet to sweat. Sound quality is not what I was buying these for but it is surprisingly decent. Especially that you have a choice of EQ presets or you can make your custom ones. No issues pairing with iPhone. takes less than three seconds to pair from the moment the power is up. It's been almost three weeks I'm using them through the day and never dropped the connection. Battery charge lasts as advertised. the 30hrs or was a selling point for me over the 'truly wireless' earbuds. At the end, these aren't the most sexy looking headphones but I will buy them again as they do great job with noise canceling and all other statements on the manufacturer site about them are true.
Pros: great noise cancelling very decent sound quality easy pairing comfortable no-nonsense controls
Cons: headband a bit short

Excellent headphones, great sound and comfortable to wear all day. Awesome sound quality over bluetooth and aux cable. Can't compare to any other noise-cancelling but it's very good, my co-workers will be having a conversation behind me and I'll have no idea they're there.
Pros: - Crazy good noise cancelling and sound quality - Very Comfortable - Battery lasts for multiple days of normal use - Compact, easy to travel with - button to change noise cancelling on/off/external amplifying is useful.
Cons: - bluetooth touch controls are a neat idea, but don't work great, especially play/pause. a few buttons would be a significant improvement. - Can't use microphone over wired connection, so this can't be used as a headset with an xbox controller - Secure for walking around the office and house, but can slide around if laying down and then getting up.

stephen from Austin, TX on 2/4/2021
I'm deep into the Apple ecosystem but when it came to buying a pair of wireless headphones these were a no brainier. Playing music from my phone or my or computer is seamless. The app's usability is very good so it's easy to tweak features throughout the day. I do get some garbling sporadically with the microphone when these are used on Zoom once in a while... Though, for slack and ring central it's not an issue. These replaced some lower range Sennheiser wired headphones and as far as comfort and sound they are a pretty drastic improvement. TLDR: If you want high end wireless headphones, these are the best bang for buck.
Pros: Good app Good tuning options
Cons: Some garbleness with the microphone with Zoom... sometimes... kind of

Great sound, bad comfort
Daniel from Pasadena, CA on 2/3/2021
Great sound quality and noise cancellation, but painful for extended periods. The narrow band digs into the top of my head and requires constant adjustment. The earcups are angled for a specific angle so when you adjust the headband it throws off the angle which pinches your ears further. The cups themselves are on the smaller side and squeeze my ear in the standard position which feels ok for an hour or less but any longer I have to massage my ears occasionally.
Pros: Great sound and noise cancellation
Cons: Narrow headband Small earcups

Sony to Bose to Sony
Crutchfield customer from PITTSBORO, NC on 1/18/2021
Having both purchased the XM3s and returned them over a year ago due to some comfort issues that were resolved with Bose QC ii. Unfortunately the Bose and a replacement failed for different reasons. While it might have been just my bad luck I decided to replace with the Sony XM4. Given that they will stay reliable, I could not be happier. More important, the Sony's, have fixed my complaints with the XM3's. The most important new features in my opinion, were the addition of the ability to connect to 2 devices at the same time and the upgrade from Bluetooth 4.1 to 5.0. Bluetooth 5.0 has made for more stable connectivity. Audio/video sync with my LG TV is perfect. The comfort level is also improved. The XM3's interfered with my glasses. The sound is great but my ears are old so each person will have to make their own judgement. The downsides are poor documentation which caused me a couple of user problems. Sony telephone support is poor but the Sony user forum works well. And as always, Crutchfield support and customer service is top notch.

Best sound-cancelling headphones I've ever heard. Period. I've got a pair of Sennheiser HD599s and Backbeat Pro 2s - neither really touch the 1000XM4 for pure enjoyability. It's a "must try before you'll understand" type of product. Fantastic!

Sony App Is Only Available on Google Play + iPhone =(
Crutchfield customer from Yorktown Hts, NY on 1/13/2021
I bought this because Crutchfield recommended it as a good pair with the Sony NW-A55 Walkman® because of the same LDAC audio codec it uses but there's a catch. You can NOT* use the headphones 'Sony Headphone Connect' connect app by using these as a combo. Meaning you cant* tweak the noise cancellation settings to max. I tried to ask this exact question in Crutchfieds Q&A section but the system did not let me do so for whatever reason. I had to make an account and even when I did it would'nt post the question. I even tried disabling my pop-up blockers with no luck. For this reason alone I recommend you get the Sony Walkman with* WiFi model as it has the google play store and runs on android. I bought this item at 11pm and I could'nt ask in the chat either as they were closed. I honestly thought there would be atleast a Mac Store App for this but nope. I should have made sure fist. The person I bought this for as a gift say's "I can still hear outside noises when it's not turned up loud". Makes me wonder if maybe* I should have got him the Bose.
Pros: - Good battery life - decent noise cancellation out of box by default but should be set to max already
Cons: - Must have Android PHONE or iPhone to to actually use the Sony Headphones connect app - Not a good combo with the Sony NW-A55 Walkman. Get the Sony NW-A105* Walkman instead for access to full app features.

CAN'T MUTE !? Basic Headset function missing
William from Altamonte Springs on 1/11/2021
Sony call this a "Wireless Noise Canceling Stereo Headset" 1 star for missing common, basic functionality on a headset at this price. I want to love it, but mute is fundamental to a headset. To be clear, there is currently no way to mute the WH-1000XM4 microphones on the headset itself. If you want to mute the microphones you must use the computer's software (Zoom, Teams, etc.) or the phone's functionality. More "Headphone" than "Headset".

Sony wants you to pay extra to make their headphones sound good
Crutchfield customer from Anchorage, AK on 1/10/2021
I don't think I like these. They are too small, but I have a really big head. The best eq setting is treble boost and even that just doesn't sound right. I can't play metal loud and have it sound good. They give my a skull AND ear ache in an hour at lower volume than I play my NC earbuds at and I can wear my earbuds all day. I'm getting an earache just thinking about wearing them. But besides all that what really irritates me is during setup they let you listen to a sample of music, and then they give you a sample of what they will sound like if you pay extra for customized sound spaces or whatever they call it. What?!? I am seriously considering returning them just for that. That makes me want to never buy another sony product. It's insulting. How can anyone think that is acceptable? It's sunday and I'm giving them another chance this afternoon before I return them tomorrow. But I'm not paying to fix a new product.
Pros: they have a nice case. noise cancelling works well
Cons: Sony makes you to pay more to make them sound right. they hurt my ears. they hurt my skull in front of my ears

These really are superior. I had a fine pair of headphones I tend to use for music with my computer. Then I thought to use the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones because I wanted to use it with BlueTooth. OMG! The sound was incomparable! The new technology they use to create deep sound with these is really astounding. I totally recommend these.

I order them a sunday and they arrived 4 days later and i leave in Puerto Rico. Suuuper fast. I order them silver, but they actually look like a beige and i LOVE HOW THEY LOOK. They have a nice feel to it and for me they look and feel premium.

They're not only minimalist good looking, they sound as good as any headphones out there, with tremendous noise-cancelling abilities. AND you can pause and change volume with the stroke of a finger on the outside of the ear cup. I use them in sync with my Bluesound Node2i steamer, and when I activate the headphones, the Node2i's signal to the main stereo is automatically muted. The headphones automatically mute when the wearer starts to talk. Very good frequency response.

Overall, they're comfortable and do a decent job with the noise cancelling. I do enjoy the buttons on the one side to increase volume and skip - very smooth and easy.

Sony WH-1000XM4
Crutchfield customer from Hood River, OR on 12/20/2020
Love everything about these phones and they are superior to the Sennheiser 550s I just returned. First sound. The adjustments are far superior. Sennheisers have only preprogrammed choices like voice or club. Sony allows full 5-band eq adjustments besides preset programs. Each program enhanced one range (i.e. bass) while making others muddy IMO. Sony phones have minimal interference from a text if I am listening to Spotify or TV. Sennheisers shut down the phones and made me have to restart the phones and chose a source. This also happens with web browsing on my phone often - tv or music cuts out in favor of web source - really poor user friendliness IMO. Sound is very clean and I do not lose any mid or high freq when upping the bass. Noise cancelling is excellent and dynamic adjusting for the environment. To be fair, Sennheisers were scratch and dent, so there could have been a software glitch. That doesn't explain the inferior functionality though.
Pros: Functionality. Sound quality. Fit and comfort. Software minimizes interruptions from text and web searches - very user friendly
Cons: Have not found one.

Sony WH-1000XM4
Crutchfield customer from Jessieville, AR on 12/15/2020
It's all about playback, they sound very good but don't have the volume capacity or can reach the peak highs and clarity that my original Bose Soundsport wireless ear buds have and can reproduce (material number 774373-0010) I have the same opinion about the new Bose Soundsport ear buds that I just purchased in this order. I'm not complaining this technology is very good but that's what I have concluded. I also have a pair of Raycon E25 earbuds and their the least of all in playback quality. I have about answered most of my questions except are products like Siennhousen that cost 3, 4, or $500.00 or more are better? The wondering as a person looks at the stuff at that $ level can get expensive. The new soundsport earbuds I purchased in this order are a Christmas gift and I'm sure that person is going to be quite happy

High hopes, bad quality
Crutchfield customer from Pomona, CA on 12/6/2020
Even at the discounted price the price does not ensure that you are receiving a good quality headset. This will seem like an upgrade if you've never owned a pair of headphones in this price range, but the noise cancelling function was not a truly noise cancelling (i could hear my ac vent faintly while on my office, it seems the only fix would be to raise the volume higher, but then my ears hurt after a few minutes with the loudness in sound). The microphone quality was awful and i experienced crackling/static noises on a regular call and on other app based calls. Additionally, the setting up process to get a passively decent output in sound quality takes a long time to get right. I like the controls on the headset and ease of use, but overall not a product that I would feel comfortable endorsing. I just bought them and spoke to the support team, they think I must have received defective ones (and i purchased two, experiencing similar problems), so that only makes me wonder, with a limited 1 year warranty, what if I have problems after the 1 year is up? Will I be stuck with a useless headphone set? Considering the money you spend on these, it would be assumed that they should last a few years without problems, but if the microphone and sound quality are already an issue out -of-box, I am inclined to say that Sony needs to perfect these issues before charging a premium price comparable to the best headphones on the market.

Amazing, high quality headphones!
Crutchfield customer from Valparaiso, IN on 12/1/2020
These headphones are great. You can feel the quality right out of the box and obviously the sound and noise cancellation speaks for itself. The set up was very easy and it connects no problem. The battery life is also truly unbelievable. They are good fully charged for 30 hours and just a 15 minute charge gives you 3-4 hours easy. Great for trips or just to wear around the house. Really a great product, purchase, and gift for just about anyone this season
Pros: Amazing sound, feel, wireless, and customizable app features. Noise cancellation is state of the art. Bluetooth connectivity has been flawless so far. Battery life is best in the industry
Cons: They are ever so slightly heavy so it makes them difficult to wear for more then 2-3 hours straight. In that case you may want to switch to ear buds....

sounds good but bad open box item
Kusandy from Tustin, CA on 11/17/2020
it sounds great to my liking. Unfortunately, I had to return it. For whatever reason when I put it on and move my head, there is a noise coming in. It sounds like a knocking noise. In the beginning, I don't notice it till I was on a long phone call and got to look down to find a pen to write something that's when I started noticing the sound. I got a good deal on the outlet/open box item and it looks nice and cleans no scratches but when I got it, it is still not hard reset to factory default so got a bit problem connecting this. Maybe if Crutchfield also does a hard reset and do some test first they will find if there is a problem with the unit. That's why I rate 3 stars for the unit.

Cracking good sound and noise cancelling!
Soher from Campbell, CA on 11/15/2020
Absolutely fantastic sounding headphones. I like having the ability for further control (equalizer etc.) through the app. My only issue is (though these are supposed to connect to two devices at the same time) I have no problem connecting them to my iPhone 12, but a heck of a time connecting them to my recent iMac, and the connection comes and goes. Sony's tech support is of course non-existent, Apple support (had to be connected to second level expert after 45 minutes with first level) was very helpful in finally getting them to pair with my iMac. I did not contact Crutchfield: Great place to purchase from (quick and free shipping etc.), however my experience with their tech support has unfortunately been very hit and miss. You either get someone knowledgeable and eager to help, or someone with very little actual knowledge about the product and who just wants to end the call as soon as they can.
Pros: Amazing clear very musical sound
Cons: Difficult to pair to two devices

Crutchfield customer from San Jose, CA on 11/11/2020
Coming from the Bose QC25 this was a terrific upgrade for both The NC capability and comfort. Pairing two devices is huge because I can shift from my phone and my laptop seamlessly. Only minor gripe is I had to turn off the speak to chat feature because it kept turning of the NC when I didn't want it to. Also I wish there was a way to turn of the voice announcements when there is an active call, sometimes I'll miss what people are saying because the device randomly connected / disconnected from my laptop nearby. Overall exactly what I needed and the minor inconveniences are all things I can fix by just turning off features or disconnecting devices.

Good noise canceling but contains some little annoying limitations.
Crutchfield customer from Athens, TN on 11/8/2020
I really like these headphones. The noise cancellation is much superior compared to the last headphone set which I've used. Only drawbacks I've found so far is: 1) it takes about 5 seconds whenever accepting a phone call for headphones to work properly for phone conversations, 2) the ear pads are uncomfortable and do not fully cover my ears, and 3) whenever you press the ear cup twice, it automatically turns on the Speak-to-Chat functionality. I have to manually swap phone's audio connection to headphones after accepting a phone call so by the time it accepts this new connection, I've already missed the beginning of conversation. I can wear headphones for approximately 2 hours before I have to take them off to let my ears breath. Regarding the Speak-to-Chat functionality by pressing right ear cup twice, I regularly have to go back into headphone application to turn it off each time. I find these limitations kind of annoying for the price paid for these headphones; otherwise, I've been pretty impressed with the noise canceling aspect. BTW: I use mine on-and-off throughout the day for digital communications and music doing development work within an office environment. The main reason I chose this unit was due to the fact that they were supposed to provide a superior experience with regards to digital communications. So far, I'm extremely impressed with noise cancellation functionality but it needs some work providing user friendly interfacing with phones.
Pros: 1) Noise cancellation is probably the best I've seen out of all other over the ear headphones I tried on. 2) Sound quality is excellent for communications and treble type music. 3) Application can be used to provide more bass to your music but not to magnitude of Bose or Beats. 4) Very comfortable headband that does not dig into head. 5) Very light unit that does not feel like it is wearing down your neck from being on your head throughout the day.
Cons: 1) It takes about 5 seconds whenever accepting a phone call for headphones to work properly for phone conversations due to having to manually adjust phone's audio connection to headphone after accepting phone calls. 2) The ear pads are uncomfortable and do not fully cover my ears making them sweat which requires removal every two hours. 3) Whenever you press the ear cup twice, it automatically turns on the Speak-to-Chat functionality which requires turning off within applications each ti

Haven't had em Long enough to really give a great review so at this point, I can say that after a bout 2 Hours of wearing them i can feel slight pressure on the Top if my Head??? Also, I've watched some Videos on set up, used the Sony App, called Crutchfield, and for the Life if me I can still hear noise in the Background for some stupid reason. Ain't figured that out yet??? The sound is Impeccable, adjustments are pretty simple, has Equalizer, swipe feature work good! Like others, the charging cable with the headphones is Virtually Useless!!!??? It's so Short it's darned near unusable. I called Crutchfield and they helped me Find something that I could actually use to charge them with thats Longer than 9" long. That.... Is a S O N Y SCREW UP!!! Overall, Very nice, just gotta figure out the features due to the Instructions are Useless also!!?? Have to go on line to Video's or use the Sony App and Dig n Dig n Dig to figure stuff out??!!
Pros: Nice. Great sound Quality, pretty Comfy.
Cons: Fir some Reason, I can still hear some Background Noise?? Don't understand that since these are Rated Better than B O S E??? Hmmmmmmm???

I was a bit disappointed by these. Comfort is pretty good, and the sound is fantastic. They are somewhat complicated to use between the app (which has a lot of features) and the swiping you have to do for features on the headphones themselves. My biggest gripe is there isn't a mute button on the headphones (and you can't program one either). Seems like a basic feature and means I would have to be near my laptop or phone to mute if needed. WOW...I have read a lot of reviews saying these headphones sound exactly the same as their predecessors, the 1000XM3s, but I don't think they know what they are talking about lol. This may be true with the EQ off, and while the sound signature is very similar, even then XM4s do sound cleaner. There is a noticeable reduction in midbass frequencies that I think contributed to a certain muddiness that was present in the XM3s...which is why they are currently on the way back to the warehouse lol. However that's about where the similarities end. What I like about the updated XM4's is that you can connect two devices to them via bluetooth; i.e. my laptop and my phone. At first I thought it was a minor convenience... yay no more disconnecting then reconnecting when I want to switch. But it turns out that this is actually a major upgrade, that allows you to keep your EQ on two devices, and tweak the sound signature from the SONY app on either device, which is huge. Additionally, the DSEE Extreme codec is not just a gimmick, it really does work. When I have the EQ on, the BT codec defaults to SBC if playing from a non-Apple device (Apple will default to AAC), but the DSEE upscaling makes my Spotify tracks sound way better than the XM3s. You can also leave your EQ on and keep the sound quality mode prioritized, which is great. So, while some folks may say its not worth the money to upgrade, I have to disagree. The XM4's win here by a landslide IMHO.
Pros: Comfort Sound Multipoint bluetooth connection - EQ both devices Slightly upgraded appearance - more matte finish
Cons: It feels like the earcups on the XM3s were just the slightest bit more comfortable, but we are splitting hairs here

Great sound and noise cancelling.
Crutchfield customer from Conway, AR on 9/27/2020
I work on a mowing crew. I can barely hear the diesel commercial mower running wide open during work. The sound is incredible. I can listen to it at much lower volume due to the excellent noise cancelling. This is very nice at the end of the day when i take them off and can still hear!!! The battery life is awesome as well. One charge per week. I would highly recommend these headphones. Especially if used while working in a noisy environment. They are very comfortable and do not hurt the top of my head after an 8 hour day. They have just the right amount of tightness to keep them in place and not vibrate around but not be too tight and hurt your head. Very good product!
Pros: They are everything they say they are.
Cons: Charging cord is waaaaaaay to short. I can't charge them in my vehicle. I have to do it at home. Find a longer charging cable if you can.

Solid purchase!
Crutchfield customer from Rochester, MN on 9/26/2020
I am very picky about comfort and these headphones meet the test. The Bluetooth works very well, whether connecting to my phone or my TV. Speaking of ... the ability to connect two different devices at the same time is a great feature. Very useful while watching TV, I don't miss a call.
Pros: - noise-canceling - I can continue to listen to my TV and walk from my basement upstairs to refill my coffee. - carrying case is a nice add
Cons: I have to share

Sony wh1000xm4 headphones
Crutchfield customer from Las Vegas, NV on 9/23/2020
I bought these new Sony xm4's a few weeks ago and they are very comfortable , pairing was easy and noise cancelling works very well. The ear cups are large and fit my medium size ears with room to spare , from small to large size ears they will fit anyone no problem. I do get a little sweat on ear cups but only when I'm outside in 95° + heat here in Las Vegas , but it takes an hour or so in the heat before it happens and it's really just a slight moisture not a dripping sweat. Overall these headphones get 5 stars from me , thanks to Crutchfield for another great buying experience !
Pros: Build quality , best in class noise cancelling , sound quality , ease of swipe features.
Cons: Short charging cable

Sony WH-1000XM4
Guest from Overseas on 9/20/2020
I have owned three Sony ANC headphones to date. I recently traded in the amazing XM3 series for the new XM4s. What's new, sharper ANC at higher frequencies, more comfortable ear covers, BT5.0 for longer range and quicker device switching, and wear detection sensors to pause music if you take the headphones. I would say having owned the XM3s for two years - I can say there is a slight uptick in audio quality, passive noise cancellation with the thicker pads, and increased stability in the BT connectivity which was already quite good. I will say that they as a whole are not as comfortable as the XM3s, the headband is thinner in the new series and I can feel the added pressure of the reduced cushioning. I find myself taking them off with greater frequency than their predecessors. That said, the ANC still leads the pack and will be great for use while working from home and the eventuality of resuming travel post pandemic.
Pros: BT5.0 Better active and passive noise cancellation Thicker ear pads Quick device switching Slight improvement to sound quality - more neutral sound profile Vs XM3
Cons: Thinner headband less comfortable for reduced longevity in wear sessions Price Not waterproof/resistant Short USB-C cable included

So far, so good.
Crutchfield customer from Cumming, GA on 9/19/2020
Works well for my office calls, and I've enjoyed playing music. Seems like good construction quality, but have only had a month. Was looking for over-the-ear to get away from the less sanitary in-the-ear, and I'm happy. Slightly tight fit, but generally comfortable - I have a big head, so not too surprising.

High Class Product
Crutchfield customer from Xenia, OH on 9/18/2020
The product is made of premium materials and is relatively lightweight. It's a very high tech product using sensors to sense location movement as well as on and off head detection paired with high quality drivers. Worth the price!
Pros: Equalizer settings customizable, great sound, high tech, strong bluetooth.
Cons: Heavier than some other over-ears, slightly pricey

Great sound and noise cancelling that actually works
James from ELON, NC on 9/18/2020
Make sure you have automatic updates on through the Sony app. About two years ago I moved into a much cheaper apartment BUT i did not realize it was a quarter mile away from a college. The kids of course play loud music during the day time when most people have to work, but you just put your headphones on and there is a setting in the Sony app that optimizes the noise cancelling for your particular environment and literally you hear very very little to no sound. I wear glasses so it can get a little uncomfortable after about 4 hours but without glasses you can go past that. They have a picture in the help guide to show you how to place your headphone in the case.
Pros: Great controls to stop music to talk, adjust volume.
Cons: I would be careful with cleaning materials for the headphone cushions.

Excellent sound quality and comfort
Crutchfield customer from Midlothian, VA on 9/10/2020
I have used Sony headphones for many, many years based on their excellent sound quality and competitive pricing. These sound fantastic and are very comfortable for long listening sessions or gaming. I tried Air Pods Pro initially, but they are not comfortable and the sound quality is just OK. They have been relegated to use while mowing the lawn while the Sony's are used for everything else. Sony has another hit on their hands with this one.
Pros: Sound quality, comfort, ease of use, pairing process, controls.
Cons: Short USB-A cord for charging

Sony XM 4
Crutchfield customer from Seattle, WA on 9/7/2020
I previously had Sennheiser PXC 550 headphones. I wanted to update and hoped these Sony's had the bass and punch I was looking for, and still have clarity. They do. I would say they are pretty much equal to the Sennheiser's but are just a bit more clean. Just what I was looking for. Would totally recommend.

Hurts the top of my head after like 4 hours, which is infrequent. Great sound quality and noise cancellation. Bluetooth multipoint is finicky with my Macbook since I think the Mac is keeping the audio connection open, but otherwise and amazing pair of headphones.

Exceptional Noise cancelling
Louis from Cincinnati, Ohio on 9/2/2020
I've enjoyed the Sony MDR-V700 headphones for over 10 years, so finding its equivalant would be difficult, but Sony pulled through and did it with these 1000MX4 headphones. Setup was easy. Bass response is stellar in the low end at 4Hz. I've had bose noise canceling and I enjoy these much better. Sony has a calibration so the feeling a vacuum in your ears, when cancelling noise, is at a minimum You wont be disappointed, promise.
Pros: Frequency Response Environmental noise response. Exceptional noise cancelling Battery Life
Cons: Case is kinda flimsy

Dont Fix What isnt Broken
Ethan from Bethesda, MD on 8/19/2020
First, This looks and feels like the M3 from last year, but with a few gimmicks Second, The noise-canceling is top notch probably one of, if not the best noise-canceling for this price range. Third, Sony added several gimmicks (not to say it's bad) such as malti-device support, and holding the right earcup will pause the music and amplify voices.
