Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Sony DSX-A415BT is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (version 3.0), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

  • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
  • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Sony DSX-A415BT.

Multi-Device Pairing w/ Dual-Phone Connection: Up to nine Bluetooth-compatible devices can be paired to this receiver. You are even able to keep two Bluetooth-enabled phones connected at the same time, so you can make and receive calls from either phone through the head unit. Only one audio device can be connected at a time, which means only one of the two connected phones can stream audio. When an already paired device is in close proximity to the Sony receiver, the two units will automatically re-connect. The head unit offers three pairing modes - SSP, NFC, & USB Auto.

  • Simple Secure Pairing: With Simple Secure Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Sony DSX-A415BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings.
  • Near Field Communication (for Android): Android (OS 4.0+) smartphones that have Near Field Communication (NFC) pair simply by touching the Android device's NFC tag to the head unit's NFC tag on its rotary-knob. For older Android smartphones that don't have OS 4.0 or better installed, download the NFC Easy Connect app from Google Play to use the head unit's NFC pairing function.
  • USB Auto (for iPhone): You can pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Sony head unit via USB and activating the Bluetooth function on your Apple device.

Hands-Free Communication w/ Front-Panel Mic: The Sony DSX-A415BT supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled cell-phone (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Bluetooth hands-free communication helps to minimize distraction while driving by allowing you to control your mobile phone from the head unit, so you don't have to touch your mobile phone. The unit features a front-panel microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. And thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the DSX-A415BT provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls.

  • Answering Calls: Incoming calls can be answered manually or automatically (between 3-10 seconds) through the Sony head unit, while the ring tone is output from your car speakers and the caller's name or phone number is displayed on the head unit's LCD. Incoming calls can also be rejected if desired.
  • Dialing a Number: Using the DSX-A415BT, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways.
    • Entering Phone #: Allows you to manually dial a phone number using the unit's control dial.
    • Preset Dial: You can store up to 6 contacts in the preset dial for quick dialing.
    • Phone Book: You can store up to 1,000 contacts in the unit's phone book. Up to a 40 character name can be input for each contact.
    • Call History: The unit will store the last 20 calls, allowing you to select a previous phone number quickly from the list.
    • Voice Dial: You can make a call using the voice tags stored on your connected cellular phone.
    • Redial: Use to easily redial the last number you called.
Note: During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Sony DSX-A415BT supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player, plus song/artist information display. You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Sony DSX-A415BT for playback.

  • SBC + AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the DSX-A415BT offers support of AAC. By supporting AAC, the DSX-A415BT offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
  • Music Control: The Sony DSX-A415BT lets you control basic playback functions like Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track from its front-panel. Advanced music browsing is not supported.
  • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control (for iPhone): When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth, the Sony DSX-A415BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and integrated microphone. Simply activate the "voice dial" function on the DSX-A415BT to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the head unit and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the DSX-A415BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone).
Android & iPhone Integration

Android Direct Connect via USB: The Sony DSX-A41BT enables playback of stored music and music apps on select Android smartphones through its front-panel USB port. The unit's USB port (1.5A) will also charge your Android device while connected; the vehicle's accessory key must be set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. There are two types of modes to choose from based on your type of Android smartphone and what content you want to listen to.

  • AOA 2.0 (Stored Music & Music Apps): The Sony DSX-A41BT supports Android Open Accessory 2.0 (AOA 2.0), which lets  you connect your Android smartphone (OS 4.1-7.1.2) to the DSX-A41BT's front-panel USB port and listen to stored music and select music apps from your Android device through the Sony receiver. You'll be able to control basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track. Other advanced music navigation will still be done from your Android smartphone's touchscreen. In this mode, the head unit will not display song/artist information; you'll continue to view song/artist information from the Android device's touchscreen. You'll still be able to access other functions and applications from your Android smartphone's touchscreen, while listening to music through the head unit. If you make a call or answer a call from your smartphone while listening to music in this mode, the music will pause until you are finished with the call and then start back up again.
  • MTP (Stored Music w/ Song/Artist Info): The DSX-A41BT also supports MTP for playback & control of stored MP3/WMA music files on your Android (OS 4.0+) device through the Sony receiver's front-panel USB port. In this mode, you get basic playback control (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track), plus song/artist information on the receiver's LCD screen. During MTP connection, you cannot use your Android smartphone's touchscreen to control music playback and you cannot select music apps from your smartphone for playback. However, you can continue to listen to stored music on your Android smartphone through the head unit while you check your Calendar, Facebook, Texts, etc on your phone.

Notes:

  • AOA 2.0 is a discontinued technology that only works with older Android smartphones with OS 4.1 to 7.1.2 (it does not work with newer Android smartphones).
  • Sony cannot guarantee MTP operation with all Android devices, regardless of operating system.

iPod/iPhone Direct Connect via USB: The Sony DSX-A41BT supports direct connection of iPod nano (7th gen) iPod touch (5th and up), or iPhone (4S and up) through its front-panel USB port. The DSX-A41BT offers playback of your music library or music apps, music control, song/artist/album display, and charging of select Apple devices. Simply connect your compatible iPod/iPhone using the cable that came with your Apple device, or purchase and Apple-certified USB cable (sold separately) to be used in the car.

  • Playback Control: The unit offers basic playback controls - such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, and Repeat/Random. Your iPod/iPhone will remain unlocked during connection, so you can continue to control your Apple device from its touchscreen for advanced music browsing and to access additional music apps.
  • Song/Artist Info: The digital media receiver will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information; including Track number, Elapsed playing time, Song Title, & Artist/Album Name. The DSX-A41BT will also display song/artist information and station identification from select music apps.
  • 1.5A Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then this unit will not recognize it.
Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Q
Where are Volume controls ? Another person complained of proximity to other controls
carl  Jul 10, 2025
6 answers
A
Volume is the large knob on the left side face of the unit. My only complaint is the strange process to pair a device using bluetooth.
david  Jul 13, 2025
A
The large knob on the left operates the volume.
david a  Jul 11, 2025
A
The volume control is the round knob
jason  Jul 11, 2025
A
The knob is volume control. If you accidentally press the knob (which, while the vehicle is moving is easy to accidentally do) you are in in a setting adjustment menu.
max  Jul 11, 2025
A
Turn the knob on the left. Easy to do without looking. Knobs are the way to go for volume!
randal  Jul 11, 2025
A
You can adjust the volume on the Sony DSX-A415BT using the rotary dial on the left side of the receiver, with the included wireless remote control, or remote app on your mobile device.

Q
Does it have bass and treble adjustments?
roundman  Jan 09, 2025

A
Greetings Everett. Thank you for your question. Actually, it has more than just bass and treble controls. It has a 10 band equalizer.
thomas  Jan 10, 2025 (Staff)
Q
Is there a way to change the seek mode so steering wheel controls scroll your presets and not just scan?
david  Apr 21, 2024
1 answer
A
Hey David, sometimes the steering wheel control module can be used to reprogram certain radio functions and assign them to your buttons but that function is not one I have ever seen possible with any of the steering wheel control modules we carry.

Q
At what volume setting does the Radio start to clip?
jo  Mar 31, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings Jo. Thank you for your question. There is no true volume setting where the stereo will clip, or any stereo for that matter. That will vary depending on the attached speakers. One thing we are not going to be testing.

Q
Hello - I have a Sirius account + App on my iPhone. If I link my iPhone to this Sony unit via the USB, will the receiver recognize my Sirius account and play music? Thank you
fred  Jan 18, 2024
1 answer
A
You may play music from SiriusXM via your iPhone with this radio. However, this will be done via Bluetooth as opposed to USB. You may connect your iPhone via USB for charging while using Bluetooth, so the end result will be the same.
zachary  Jan 18, 2024 (Staff)
Q
How do you remove the sleeve from the SONY DSX A41BT?
curtis  Jan 17, 2024
1 answer
A
2 radio removal tools are included with purchase of the Sony DSX-A415BT, Curtis. Insert both release keys into the slots on the left and right of the radio until they click, then pull the radio out to separate.
bo  Jan 18, 2024 (Staff)
Q
I have this head unit and for some reason when connecting to Bluetooth I can't hear anyone on the phone and there voice seems to be trying to come out of my subs and with aux I hear them but they don't hear me?
shawn  Jan 10, 2024
1 answer
A
That is very interesting, Shawn. I would first check the RCA pre-out connections on the rear. Make sure your RCAs are connected to the black subwoofer outs and not the white and red rear pre-outs. When connecting with AUX you would not be utilizing the built-in microphone with the Sony DSX-A415BT, causing them not to hear you. I hope this helps!
bo  Jan 10, 2024 (Staff)
Q
Hi I would like to know if the radio comes with rear and sub preouts can I add a 4 channel amp later on to power my 4 speakers and a mono block later on as well to power a sub?
brandan  Dec 08, 2023
1 answer
A
The Sony DSX-A415BT has a rear preamp output and a subwoofer specific preamp output, Brandan. You could add a subwoofer amp and 4-channel amp, but you would lose fade control as you would be splitting the rear RCA preamp output signal to all 4-channels of your 4-channel amp. If you need 6-channels of high-voltage preamp outputs for your system goals, check out the JVC KD-X380BTS in the link below. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KDX380B/JVC-KD-X380BTS.html

Q
How do you install/mount this receiver? There are no instructions in the operators manual.
bob  Nov 08, 2023
1 answer
A
We provide Mastersheet vehicle specific install instructions with radio package orders when available for your vehicle, Bob. In most vehicles when installing the Sony DSX-A415BT a dash kit is required, and you can either use the included DIN-style sleeve or side mount the Sony radio with the included screws. IF you already have a single DIN sized radio in place you would remove the existing DIN sleeve and replace with the sleeve included with the Sony radio, make your radio's wiring connections according to the instructions, then slide the new unit in place. Keep the radio release keys in case you need to remove the Sony radio in the future. I hope this helps!

Q
How does this radio get the alternator voltage? Is it wired to the alternator?
michael  Oct 23, 2023
1 answer
A
This radio (and most) would be connect to the vehicle's battery. In most installations, this is achieved by simply connecting the radio to the vehicle's pre-existing radio power connections, usually with a harness or interface to make the process easier. Please reach out to our advisors via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695 for help with your specific project.

Q
I have a Crutchfield Sony DSX-40ui that I want to replace with this Sony DSX-A415BT. Is this a simple pull old Sony in bolt in the new Sony. Can I use the existing Sony 40UI cable/conector with the Sony 415? Thanks for any info.
randy  Oct 12, 2023
1 answer
A
Unfortunately, these radios use harnesses with different wire pin configurations. It would be necessary to use the harness for the new radio, which means rewiring.

Can I wire stereo to work without ignition switch on?
michael s.  Jul 08, 2023
1 answer
A
This radio's Auto Off functionality will completely turn the radio off 30-minutes after it has been been "turned off" manually. To clarify, turning off the radio manually still allows for a small amount of power draw from the battery. Auto Off, on the other hand, completely turns off the unit with no possibility for power draw.

Does it come with the subwoofer cable for the jack on the back of the media player?
christopher  May 26, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Christopher, and thank you for your question. You would need to purchase an RCA cable to add your amplifier/powered subwoofer. The RCA cable is not included.

Q
How big of an amplifier/sub can I hook to this if I already have Rockford Fosgate R168X2 (x4) already installed?
levi  Feb 04, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Tuorgan, and thank you for your question. You can put as big or as little sub/amp as you like. You would be using the preamp outputs of this Sony, not the built in amp that is already running your main speakers.

Q
The recommended install accessories (1997 Lexus ES300) for this unit include a line output converter. None of the other head units that I am looking at require this. Could you please explain why? (note: I will retain the factory amp in my car)
matt  Jan 11, 2023
1 answer
A
This radio only has rear and subwoofer line-level pre-amp outputs. In order to feed full-range signal to your factory amplifier while maintaining fade control, we will need to convert the speaker-level front and rear outputs of this radio into line-level RCA signal to feed into your factory amplifier. The other radios you've considered likely had front and rear line-level outputs, which is why a LOC was not needed.

Q
I have Sirius XM account. Do I need to do anything special for install?
john  Dec 01, 2020
1 answer
A
You will most likely need an additional XM tuner and antenna, there should be a link on the Crutchfield page for it. The receiver is setup to work as an interface with the XM tuner, the satellite radio receiver is not built in.

It was a gift for my girlfriend's son and he installed it. Per his report, he likes the interface, equalizer setting and very simple. He uses the Bluetooth to connect his I phone to the unit and works well. He doesn't like to use the technical part and other perks of the unit and he's satisfied with the unit.

Q
hi is this item with built in Steering Wheel control output?
mary jane  Apr 25, 2020
3 answers
A
Yes, you will need to include the adapter that Crutchfield sales with this radio. This adapter allows you to use steering wheel controls, like volume up & down; advance to next song, scan radio, and change source. Installing the adapter is straight forward, just plug and play, with the wires. I would also get Crutchfield to set up all the wires to plug & play to make the install easy.

The ability to retain steering wheel controls with aftermarket receivers will be determined by the receiver you are using and the vehicle you have. For full information on this type of integration (including the parts you will need) please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Will this unit be a straight swap out for a Sony MEX-BT3000P?
paulp  Jun 07, 2019
1 answer
A
Hi Paul! Just want to be sure I'm on the same page with ya. Sounds like you're hoping to just unplug your MEX-BT3000P, and swap it out with this DSX-A415BT. There are quite a few years between these models, so odds are, the pin locations for the harnesses won't be the same. As much as I hate to say it, you're probably going to have to disconnect and do some new wiring connections for your new receiver. Sorry about that, Paul, but let us know how we can help! You can reach us online via chat, or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. We'll be happy to help.

How do you get it onto FM? How do you get it to show the song name and artist? I tried following the manual and got it all screwed up! Are there "idiot-proof" instructions out there?
george a.  Jun 05, 2019

This HU is not the most user friendly. I can tell you that. It is very functional to basic needs. As far as changing source. the OFF/SRC button on the top left. pushing that should cycle through your options. and to get the song title, SCRL/DSPL that is bottom right in the "carbon fiber' area. Pushing that should cycle the display options. One would think, since it is a digital media HU, they would have put more screen in the face instead of all that dead space and give us some extra display lines to show what is being played. But alas, no.

Q
I've got a dead Sony DSX-A405BT - will this update plug into the same harness on my 2001 F150?
jw  May 26, 2019
1 answer
A
We have not researched the physical size of the harnesses to make sure they are identical to know 100% if they can. However, I've checked and the pinouts are the same and given that didn't change, I would expect the plugs to be the same size too allowing a direct swapout. If worst case scenario happens and they are not the same size, you can swap each wire, color for color, to make the change My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

This radio does not have rear speaker preamp outputs; just front so it cannot fade the audio when using them. There are ways to use the speaker level outputs with an amp and retain the fade ability. I recommend contacting an advisor on 1-800-324-9695 for a personal recommendation on gear to make this work My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Paul

It says hands free calling, and voice recognition, but I don't see a microphone. Is it built in, or do I need to buy a mic to go with it? I see a blue mini plug on the back. Is that for a microphone?

A
There is a built in mic. I have it installed in a jeep liberty and it works but there is noticeable road noise when using the phone. I have had limited success with the voice recognition but that could be operator error in my part. Overall it works well, however is those two features are most important uou might want something with a remote microphone and noise canceling built in.
