Product Research
Features
Overview: The Sony ECM-S1 Wireless Streaming microphone is designed for use with Sony Interchangeable Lens cameras. The microphone is equipped with three mic capsules for recording clear, high-quality audio. The wireless microphone transmits audio to a receiver that attaches to a Sony camera that supports the Multi Interface (MI) Shoe. The digital audio signal is directly recorded by the camera for high quality sound for your videos, streaming, and vlogging. The transmitter and receiver are powered by rechargeable batteries that charge via USB. The ECM-S1 comes with a stand, a clip-on Pop Guard, and a cloth storage pouch.
Stand: The microphone comes with an adjustable stand. When attached, the microphone can be tilted for the best results. When not attached to the stand, the microphone can be installed on a tripod or boom arm via the 1/4" tripod thread.
Directivity Patterns: The microphone is equipped with three large-diameter (14mm) mic capsules for high-quality sound recording. The mic offers three Sound Capture modes that allow you to select the appropriate pickup pattern for the current situation:
- Monaural, Uni-directional: This mode is for recording sounds from in front of the microphone while minimizing sounds from the back. This is suitable for recording the voice of a single person, such as for a podcast, narration, or other voice work.
- Monaural, Omni-directional: Sounds from all directions are picked up in order to record the voices of multiple persons or sounds from multiple angles.
- Stereo, Uni-directional: This mode picks up sound from in front of the microphone in a wide pattern. This is ideal for recording music in stereo.
Bluetooth 5.3: The ECM-S1 wireless microphone uses Bluetooth version 5.3 to communicate with the receiver. The LC3plus codec provides a stable connection, plus low latency, low power consumption, and excellent sound quality. It has a working range of up to 450 feet under optimum conditions. The receiver has a "Link" LED to indicate when the Bluetooth connection is made.
Multi-Interface Shoe: The receiver fits onto the camera via the Multi-Interface Shoe. The M-I Shoe digitally transfers the audio signal from the receiver to the camera, allowing it to be recorded directly on the video. When using the Multi-Interface Shoe connection, the switch on the receiver should be set to "Digital." The Multi-Interface Shoe can be found on most Sony Interchangeable Lens Cameras, including E-mount and A-mount models, as well as some Sony compact cameras, camcorders, and action cams. To check compatibility, click here. Some models are fully compatible, while others may have some limitations. When the receiver is not in use, the connector sleeve should be attached to the Multi-Interface foot to protect the terminal. The sleeve also doubles as a stand, if not attached to a camera.
Analog Connection: If your camera is not compatible with the Multi-Interface Shoe, the audio can be transmitted in analog form via an audio cable (not included). The receiver has a 3.5mm analog audio output (labeled "Mic Out"). The power switch on the receiver should be set to "Analog" when connecting to the camera via audio cable.
Connecting to Computer: The ECM-S1 can output audio directly to a computer or smartphone through a USB cable. The USB port on the receiver is USB-C. You can connect to your computer with a USB-C to USB-C, USB-C to USB-A, or USB-C to Lightning cable (if connecting to an Apple device). The receiver will always output a digital signal to the computer or smartphone, regardless of the setting of the Analog/Digital switch.
Audio Mixing: When the microphone is connected to a computer or smartphone via USB, you can adjust the audio mix between the microphone and the computer/smartphone via the Headphone Volume/Mixing Ratio dial.
Headphone Jack: The microphone is equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack for connecting a pair of headphones. This allows you to monitor the audio while the microphone is connected to a device, such as a computer or smartphone via USB. You can adjust the headphone output level via the side-mounted Headphone Volume/Mixing Ratio dial.
Adjustable Audio Level: For best recording quality, you can adjust the Audio Level using the front panel dial. A row of vertical LEDs indicates the level so you can monitor the audio while recording.
Filters: There are two filters to choose from to improve the audio. The Noise Cut (NC) filter eliminates unpleasant noise through digital signal processing. The Low Cut (LC) filter cuts off low frequency noise, such as wind, vibration, or HVAC noise, to improve the audio.
Pop Guard: Included with the ECM-S1 is a clip-on Pop Guard. The guard reduces plosive sounds from the human voice (p-sounds and t-sounds) picked up by the microphone, as well as protects the mic from effects of the wind.
Rechargable Batteries: The microphone is powered by a 3.85-volt Lithium-ion rechargeable battery, while the receiver has a 3.7-volt battery. The mic and receiver both have USB-C ports for charging from a computer or other USB power source. Charging time is approximately two hours for both the mic and receiver. Battery life for the microphone/transmitter is approximately 13 hours with a fully charged battery. The battery life for the receiver is about 18 hours when attached to a camera via the Multi-Interface Shoe. When the analog audio output is selected, the receiver has a 3-hour battery life.
