Melanie Seibert
Love listening to your favorite songs on your MiniDisc portable? Hear them through your home audio system with this versatile deck from Sony! The MXD-D400 can play any track you want to hear, whether it's stored on an MD, audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, or MP3 CD.

Love listening to your favorite songs on your MiniDisc portable? Hear them through your home audio system with this versatile deck from Sony! The MXD-D400 can play any track you want to hear, whether it's stored on an MD, audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, or MP3 CD.

Because MiniDiscs are virtually indestructible, and because MDLP™ mode lets you pack up to 5 hours of music onto a single compact MD, MiniDisc is popular for folks who like to create custom mixes for on-the-go listening. The MXD-D400 provides quick, convenient recording from CD: its slot-loading MD well lets you dub tracks to MiniDisc internally at up to 4X the playing speed. You can also record from external components via the analog and optical digital inputs.

During playback, 25-track programming and repeat and random play modes put you in control of your music. The remote gives you easy operation from across the room.

System Features
CD Features
MiniDisc Features

System Features

Overview: This unit combines a single CD player with a single MiniDisc recorder/player in a single chassis. This unit features a two line, white display that can be set to display one line for CD and one for MiniDisc, or both lines can be set to display either CD or MiniDisc information. There are two jog dials (one for MiniDisc and one for CD) that are used for quick track access and quick MiniDisc menu access.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the system off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

CD Features

CD Compatibility: This unit will play prerecorded CDs, finalized CD-Rs, and finalized CD-RWs.

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 files recorded onto CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 level 1/level 2, Joliet, or Romeo formats. Each disc can have a maximum of 150 folders and the unit will play no more than a combined total of 300 folders and files. When playing an MP3 disc, you can choose from the following play modes:

  • Normal Play: plays all tracks on the loaded disc in order
  • Album Play: plays all tracks in the selected album in order
  • Shuffle Play: plays all the tracks on a disc in random order
  • Album Shuffle Play: plays all the tracks in an album in random order
  • Program Play: allows you to program a sequence of up to 25 songs for playback in any order
  • Repeat Play: allows you to repeat the current track, entire disc, shuffle play, album shuffle play, or program play
    • Note: You must select the CD deck during playback. You cannot, for example, use shuffle play or program play between the MiniDisc and CD decks.

CD Text: The unit displays track and disc titles for CDs that have this information. When a CD Text disc is copied to MiniDisc using the CD-MD Synchro recording function, the track and disc titles are automatically recorded onto the MiniDisc.

MiniDisc Features

Play Modes: When playing a MiniDisc, you can choose from the following play modes:

  • Normal Play: plays all tracks on the loaded MD in order
  • Shuffle Play: plays all the tracks on an MD in random order
  • Program Play: allows you to program a sequence of up to 25 songs for playback in any order
  • Repeat Play: allows you to repeat the current track, entire MD, shuffle play, or program play
    • Note: You must select the MD player/recorder during playback. You cannot, for example, use shuffle play or program play between the MiniDisc and CD decks.

CD-MD Synchro Recording: You can easily copy a CD digitally to a MiniDisc using the CD-MD Synchro function. In addition to recording at normal speed, you can also record at high speed (approximately 4X normal speed).

Note: When recording MP3 files, the files are converted to audio CD format. This may cause the data volume to increase beyond the capacity of the disc.

Recording Level: The recording level can be set for both digital and analog recording. Additionally, you can change the volume of the recorded tracks using S.F. (Scale Factor) Edit, which records the original track over at a new recording level.

Pitch Control: You can lower the MD pitch by up to 36 steps, or 3 octaves. Additionally, you can control the playback speed in 0.1% increments from -87.5% to 0.0%.

Smart Space: The Smart Space function will replace long silent spaces (4 to 30 seconds) with a 3 second blank space. You can turn this feature on and off.

Level-Synchro Recording: When the Level-Synchro Recording function is turned on, track numbers are automatically marked when the input signal is continuously below a certain level for more than 2 seconds and then exceeds that level.

Time Machine Recording: The last 6 seconds of data is stored in a buffer so you can start recording 6 seconds before you actually engage record function.

Undo: This function will cancel the last edit and restore the data on the MD.

Music Synchro-Recording: The Music Synchro-Recording function allows you to synchro-record with any audio equipment connected to the external inputs.

REC-IT Function: You can record specific tracks on a CD while listening to them. This allows you to put only the tracks you like onto an MD.

Recording: Recording can be done in both stereo and mono. In mono mode recording, time is doubled.

MDLP Recording: In addition to normal stereo recording, this unit has two long time recording modes; LP2 and LP4. When recording in LP2 Stereo mode, you can record two times the normal recording time. When recording in LP4 Stereo mode, you can record four times the normal recording time.

Sampling Rate Converter: The sampling rate converter allows you to convert 32kHz and 48kHz to the 44.1 kHz sampling rate of MD, so you can record from DBS with digital out or DAT/DCC.

Serial Copy Management System: SCMS does not allow you to make a copy of a digital copy. Normally, this will not be a problem, but note that it will keep you from making a MiniDisc copy of a CD-R made on a consumer audio CD-R recorder when using the unit's CD player.
