ANC is not great

Merle from Albuquerque, NM on 6/13/2025

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I like the fit and comfort, I wish there was a size in between medium and small but it was good. Sound was good, bass OK but I think it could have been better if it had better ANC. I seriously did not notice a different between Ambient and Noise Cancelling. It also disconnected twice on a 40 minute run.

Pros: Sound Quality is Good Comfortable Tips Easy to Run with it on

Cons: No noticeable ANC

All Around Choice for Conversation and Movies

Crutchfield customer from Merrimac, MA on 3/30/2025

Verified employee review (What's this?)

The sound quality, noise cancelling and battery life are great, as they should be at this price point. I wore them on a one hour walk conversing with a friend. They locked into my ear and held tight. I never had to touch them once, despite moving my jaw constantly during the conversation. I had the noise cancelling off for most of the walk so I could hear vehicles behind me but easily switched it on with one finger tap while crossing over a loud highway. My companion never noticed any transition and commented after the walk they I had been loud and clear the entire time we talked. (I did go through the software's ear tip fit test, which had me swap into the large ear tips.) My next test was binging movies on an LDAC blue ray player. They were comfortable for over four hours. As an added bonus, their shape allows comfortable use with my ski and cycling helmets. As a side sleeper I found them just a bit too bulky for sleep usage, but they did stay in place through the night, and the battery lasted until morning in "connection stability" mode, which makes the most efficient use of the battery. My next flight will complete my test, but I have no reason to doubt that their tiny case, great noise cancelling and long battery life will make them my go-to choice for air travel. Overall, they do all the things I need them to do, and they do them well.

I was in the hunt for wireless earbuds and compared there with the Bowers & Wilkins Pi8 and Technics AZ100. Out of the box, they paired easily with my iPhone after downloading the app. I had to change the earplugs to smaller size, this comes with several sizes. The sound was bright with a muted bass and narrow soundstage. These improved by tweaking the EQ in the app. I chose to go with the B&W as the Sony's sound could not match, and the fit was less adaptable to my small ear canals

Had two of my Bose Sound sport go bad. It's time for upgrade. Originally I was deciding on Audio-Techinca but decided to spend a little more and get the Sony due to popularity and great reviews. Got my Sony in the mail, first time hearing it was a disappointed, absolutely lack of bass. But then, I went to the Sony app and adjusted the equalizer and sounded better but still not as good as my old Bose Sound Sport. After 3 days of playing the bass got better and better. I guess the speakers needs to break in first for the first time. The noise cancellation is great but I can't wear it for extended time as it gives me headaches from the sensation of pressure in the ears. I searched it up it is know effects for some people using noise cancellation earpiece. There is no actual pressure. Not fault of Sony as it could be any other brands. One thing annoys me a bit is my local gym, lots of teens and pretty much everyone wears headphones and about half of them are using Sony so I get a lot of interference, music cutting on and off or one of the earpiece will have more static than other. I visited another gym that is farther from my house, older crowds and less headphones usage. My Sony works fine at this gym. Despite these issues I still love my Sony WF-1000XM5

First off- the sound is great- no issues there. I purchased these for workouts and skiing. The touch interface on them does not work with gloves and overall seems pretty temperamental- I was not a fan. In addition, I had intermittent cutting out of the signal and songs would stop for a beat or two- then come back. Returning the item for something that fits my needs better.

Pros: Great sound - clear precise- good bass but not too boomy. Fit is comfortable and they stay put.

Cons: Touch interface not for everyone- does not work with gloves

This is my first noise-cancelling wireless earbud. I already have a Sony XBA-H1 Hi-Res wired earbud and a couple of Sony WH1000XM3 headphones, an Oppo PM3 headphone and a Sony MDR-1A headphones. The WF1000XM5 has good sonics, decent bass but like my Sony NC headphones, only decent highs. The Sony MDR-1A, XBA-H1 and Oppo PM3 has better detail in the highs, I think this is the nature of NC phones. Comfort is so-so. I couldn't get a snug fit with any of the supplied buds. They were either too big or too small. I also don't like the new touch sensor controls, to adjust the volume, the four taps is ridiculous. The timing of the taps is critical for it to sense what you want to do. I keep activating the wrong functions. The prior model just had a touch and hold to adjust the volume. The auto turn off feature takes too long to kick in. Battery life really drops when you activate all the features on the earbuds. The ANC does not work as good as NC headphones. The BT connectivity is inconsistent. It works great with my two newer Walkmans. But the signal constantly drops on the right channel with my older Sony NWZ-A17 Walkman and my iPhone 15 Pro, like every several seconds. It seems to be an antenna issue as there is less dropouts when the device is on the same side as the right earbud. Put the device on the left pocket and the dropouts get pretty severe. It's not the Bluetooth version because the iPhone has BT 5.3, the newer Walkmans have 5.0 (the NWZ-A17 has

Pros: * Good sound * Compact size * noise canceling decent for an earbud but headphones are better

Cons: * Inconsistent and terrible Bluetooth connectivity (device dependent) * mediocre noise canceling * poor fit (for my ears) * battery life really drops when activating all the features * terrible touch sensor interface * auto turn off takes too long to kick-in

A great upgrade from its predecessor!

Note: I'm not a fan of consumable foam inserts in general (the EP-NI1010 series replacements seem difficult to find) so I used third-party silicone ones for comfort and longevity. Physically both the charging case and the buds are smaller. Pairing with multiple Bluetooth devices is more intuitive with the case's physical button. The surfaces of these buds are smoother and slightly more difficult to handle than their matte predecessors. No need to choose a language with these buds (language prompts replaced with two-toned sound prompt indicating connection with earbuds), plus support for more app services. Sound-pressure readings help listeners keep the volume at a safe, comfortable level. Location settings allow dynamic noise-canceling to do its job (or remain off) at home or on a bus/train, just like the predecessor earbuds. Sound quality for podcasts is more than adequate. Overall these earbuds are a marked upgrade from the predecessor WF-1000XM4s and their well-documented battery issue. I look forward to them being supported by more devices with future firmware updates (e.g. GoPro for stereo sound recording).

Pros: Smaller than predecessor, no need to select language for prompts, support for more app services.

Cons: Smooth surfaces on smaller buds make it more difficult to handle.

I've had these for 5 days. I was fortunate enough to get them on a sale. They were still pretty expensive, but they are worth it. They sound fantastic and the adaptive sound control works well. I walk on a two lane road while listening to music streamed on my iPhone and I haven't been run over yet. I'm still getting used to having them stuffed in my ears, but that doesn't bother me too much now. And I know they sound better because of the tight fit in my ears.

Perfect sound and fit

Jessica from Washington, DC on 7/5/2024

These are everything I hoped they would be: excellent sound with a snug ear fit. I had been using Beats ear buds but found them to sound a bit tinny. They also were too big for my ears and would hurt after more than 30 minutes of wear. The Sony buds fit very well and have four sizes of tips, making them truly a custom fit. The sound is rich and full with good definition and the noise canceling is effective. I am very glad I bought this product.

Pros: Best sound and fit

Cons: Does not pair as seamlessly with iPhone as do Beats

Is XM5 worth it? Think and research about it

John from San Juan, PR on 7/1/2024

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

First, the sound quality is great, but not significantly different from competitors with a lower price tag. The app and earbuds can measure the airflow into the ears, which is excellent if you want to ensure effective noise cancellation. However, don't expect headphone-level noise cancellation; it's still acceptable. Personally, I can justify paying over $200 for these earbuds, especially considering potential long-term benefits like durability and support.

Pros: Great app, good quality on sound. Great building quality.

Cons: Not the best in confort, but are tolerable for long music sections.

The 1000XM5 is the best of the ear bud I could find.....It lasts almost all day on 1 charge, 3 hours longer than my M4 & Bose sport with high quality sound at a fair price point. Its the smallest ear bud with longest lasting battery I could find and handles cell calls flawlessly.

I always enjoy reading reviews. 45+ years of enjoying great music utilizing great gear. Here is quick review of the Sony SilverWF-1000XM5. Best earbuds i have ever encountered and some of the best headphones I have ever enjoyed. I have had other Sony Headsets and ear buds. This exceeds all in leaps and bounds. Took (seriously) 3-5 seconds if that to pair perfectly to my iPhone 15. To be fair I had the App from my previous 2 Sony wireless phones. Fidelity Superb,Bass is solid and separation is outstanding,Comfort is excellent.Noice cancellation is great. Great purchase and whole heartedly recommend. These are great phones. I do have several headphones primarily wired and 3-4 times this price and these easily equal the performance of those.I could nitpick the slight fidelity enhancements with the more expensive phones, but why bother. These are great and fun! Crutchfield service continues to be best in class. I can shop here knowing they have the best intentions and truly guarantees 100% satisfaction. Thanks Crutchfield 50 years in the Audio Business is a milestone and rarefied air.

These are really nice earbuds. If you've never worn any before (or any like these), they'll take a little getting used to. But once you do, they're very comfortable to wear and even sleep in. When I'm lying on my side, there's only a little pressure on my ear from the tip. They're noise cancelling is great at blocking out the world around you, while still enabling you to hear when people are talking so you can either take an earbud out, or turn off the noise cancelling. and the "Adaptive Sound Control" in the app does a good job of automatically letting in ambient sound when you're walking. The "tapping controls" take a little bit of practice, especially if you're not used to them. It's easy to either enable or disable the noise cancelling, or start/stop whatever your listening to since each of those is only one tap. One thing these could use is a mute feature: if you're on a call it's easier to just mute it if you need to talk to someone around you, rather than taking the earbuds out or ending the call.

Pros: Great fit Good noise cancelling Secure when your head is moving around.

Cons: No mute feature.

Returned them because they were to small and I had a very hard time getting them out of the charger. Sound quality wasn't bad but not outstanding. The 3 inch supplied HDMI cable was useless and the packaging was very cheap for a $300 product. Instead I purchased the Technics EAH - AZ80 and gave them 5 stars, they give near audiophile sound quality compared to the Sony and are very easy to insert them in your ear.

I bought these specifically for the noise canceling feature and they did not disappoint. I wear them when sleeping if there is any annoying outside noise and sometimes do play music as I'm sleeping. I did not buy them for the audio quality but find it sufficient for my purpose. I generally wear a quality over the ear headphone for music listening. It is absolutely crucial that these ear bus fit perfectly for quality audio and the noise canceling feature to work. I found the small ear buds to give me the best acoustic seal. I did not test any of the other features of this item.

I did return these. Excellent sound quality with good bass. Lots of features on the app and easy to use. However, for the premium price, I was not satisfied with the connection. There were connection issues that really ticked me off since I enjoyed the sound so much and that was a big thing for me. At the gym for under an hour and both buds would briefly lose connection for one second around 4-5x in the short duration. I had my phone in my pocket.

This is my first experience with wireless earbuds. I initially found that their somewhat amorphous shape made it difficult to insert and orient them properly. With practice, that has become easier. Audio quality is very good, but requires well sealed tips. One of my ear canals is apparently larger than the other and requires a larger tip than is supplied by Sony. I found it necessary to purchase after market replacements. While not an important issue for me, I found sound isolation from the outside world to be minimal. Overall, I would give the Sony WF-1000XM5 a 7 out of 10.

Pros: Easily portable. Acceptable sound quality

Cons: Disappointing ambient sound isolation. Multiple-tap controls require deftness and practice.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Upgraded from XM4s and have been using the XM5s a full 60 days. Excellent sound quality. Not good for working out. The noise cancelling is better but it's far from best in class like people say, and it's 100% dependent on the earbuds being jammed in your ear canal with 0 gap. This means you cannot move if you want to preserve the noise cancelling. You can't wrinkle your nose, you can't move your head, nothing. They do work fairly well in an airplane for NC. Not so much in a city bus or in a place with other people speaking. They are smaller than the XM4s and fall out much more readily, even after tying multiple ear insert sizes. OVERALL good not great. If sound cancelling or workout earbuds are what you want look elsewhere. If you want great sound while you're sitting down reading they are great.

Pros: Sound quality. Regular updates. App. Style

Cons: Too loose. Noise cancelling just OK.

I previously owned the WF-1000XM4s for two years and replaced them with these after sending those in for repairs multiple times. I'd like to echo what other reviewers have said, as well as my own thoughts. First, the smaller buds compared to last gen is an improvement overall. They are lighter and easier to insert, but since I have a big head and ears, I actually slightly preferred the older, larger design. I acknowledge though that the new design is objectively better despite my preference. I also really like that the ear tips have a mesh filter now, as everything stays cleaner. One thing about design I really don't like is the shiny plastic body. Not only do I feel they look cheaper compared to the matte, textured finish of the predecessor, but they make the earbuds slippery and more difficult to handle. They are hard to pinch and pull out of the case, so I have to push them out from the side instead. Also, when I put the XM4s in, I liked to twist them a bit back and forth to get a really snug seal, but the slick plastic of the XM5s makes that difficult and results in a less secure feeling fit (though they haven't fallen out yet). Spund quality seems about on-par with the XM4s. I hope they update them with an option to hear the listening mode read out loud when wearing like on last gen so that it's easier to tell what mode you're currently on. Overall, I think these are a great upgrade for most people, but I admittedly prefer the old design. Still happy with them overall!

Pros: Good sound quality, good ANC, better ear tips, improved charging case

Cons: Shiny plastic body feels slippery and cheap, lighter and smaller design makes it harder to feel like you have a snug fit for larger heads/ears

The Sony headphones app needs a little work on which ear tips to use.. from Small to Large it passed the test.. but the large and medium kept slipping off.. and if I do get a seal my ear just starts to feel a little pain.. so I'm using the small ones.. Ear tips needs to be better . I would rather use the mediums for a better seal but it's kinda painful to wear it more than a hour.. the smalls isn't the best seal but it's the most comfortable one of the four ear tips.. Sound is great on my iPhone.. I just wish the app comes with extra bass.. as Sony is known for extra bass..

Pros: Great quality Great sound Enjoy watching movies with it on iPhone

Cons: Need better ear tips Need extra bass on app Need to be fully integrated with iPhone

I was an early adopter of the XM3 and a day one buyer of the XM4 and of these. Audio quality: indistinguishable from the XM4, although never did side-by-side tests. I think only experienced audiophiles with impeccable streaming sources will notice a difference. Fitment/weight: supremely more comfortable. I don't usually have issues with the XM4 (the complaints about them being large are valid, but apparently I have large enough ears) and never did with the XM5. But the fitment has downsides too, see the next section. Noise canceling: minor improvements, except (1) certain frequencies that did come through could have a computer-y, processed quality to them, and (2) because these earbuds are smaller, wind or air could rush in around the buds and be heard (noticeable while running). For the same reason, they were slightly more prone to jostle especially when talking or opening your mouth, leading to gaps in noise canceling and overall sound quality. Overall the larger XM4 feel more stable in my ear. The smooth finish to the buds and case was actually annoying to get used to. I think the matte finish of the XM4 makes them easier to handle. The redesigned tips are a plus. They have a mesh guard separating the ear from the speaker channel- great addition for cleanliness. But the foam is different, softer and less thick, I prefer the previous foam's tighter fit. The Bluetooth pairing method is more annoying. I experienced minor connectivity

Good sound, poor ANC

The foam eartips are uncomfortable to me and they do slide out of my ears after a few hours, regardless of eartip size. I suppose I'm more of a silicone eartip fan, but that is hardly my biggest gripe. I've gone through 3 sets of these earbuds and the ANC simply does not work. In spending probably a total of 2 hours across all three sets of earbuds, Sony determined them to be defective but Crutchfield has an excellent swap policy so I've just being exchanging my earbuds with Crutchfield. The sound quality is excellent and I'm in meetings a lot and people say my calls are crystal clear except when I'm around other people. Then the ANC simply does not cancel our their background noise and I can't hear anything in my meetings due to the ambient noise around me, despite the app saying ANC is in fact on and working. I've read countless reviews on these earbuds and everyone seems to claim the ANC on these are about as good as the Bose QC2 but I can't agree with that. However, I was able to find one review that did claim the ANC was very poor and some comments/responses to that article agreed with the author. I can't believe Sony has 3 back to back to back defective sets of earbuds, I just think they really screwed up their launch batch of earbuds and I can't wait for them to eventually fix these. So I'm going to return them again for something else. These are a supreme disappointment as the sole reason I wanted these were for the apparent ANC.

Pros: Sound quality

Cons: Inoperable ANC on 3 different sets of earbuds (claimed defective by Sony) Eartips uncomfortable Body is slippery and difficult to remove from ear

Easy to setup. Excellent product, great song. Hoping for long battery life. I have M4 model and batteries lasted a little over a year. I will admit that I used them many hours.

This is my first wireless set of earbuds or IEM's if you will. I wouldn't trust these to stay put when i'm doing something vigorous like running, but if your doing something stationary it should be fine most the time your wearing it. I still check them periodically to make sure they did not fall out or came lose. Comfort wise they are tolerable, i have problems with over the ear headphones smashing my ear lobes that are sensitive to pressure. Audio quality, these don't deliver much on bass line hits but are still pleasant to listen to. The mids and highs seem accurate accurate enough. To get something noticeably better I would have to go with something much more expensive from brands like Audeze or Campfire Audio that has separate drivers for each function. The noise rejection aspect of it works good, its not amazing but its works ok for blotting out background noise if your in an office. Even with NR active, the audio on most tracks still delivers acceptable fidelity. I briefly compared these to my HiFiMan (Sundara) Planar Magnetic wired headphones, they can't compete with it but for what these do i'm OK with that, for comedic relief I will mention my wired headphones cost about the same as these.

Pros: Easy Charging Portable Fits in your pocket - compact Fast Charging Simple to use Comes with extra tips for the ears.

Cons: The (expandedable) tap functions on the earbuds have very limited functionality and are specific to supported applications only. Does not pair with Samsung smart TV's.

I had the WF-100XM4 headphones before these and absolutely loved them. Best ANC I have found on a headset. These sound just as good although I find the new shape and size to be difficult in handling. I drop/fumble with these a lot more than my older ones. My old ones started having weird battery life issues. Not sure if it was tied to a firmware update or not but the next firmware update made it worse.

Pros: Great sound. Amazing ANC

Cons: Shape/size

I upgraded from the Sony WF-1000XM3 to the Sony WF-1000XM5. Boy, what a difference. I could never wear the XM3's for longer than 1.5 to 2 hours before I had to remove them. Well with the XM5's, I have even forgotten that I had them in. I have worn these for up to 4 hours with absolutely no issues. Oh yeah, the sound quality is great. They could make the Sony Headphone App a bit more flexible regarding controlling with finger taps and their small size make them a bit fidgety when removing from the charging case.

Pros: Size

Cons: Size

Not worth it - previous model (WF-1000XM4) has MUCH better sound isolation and sound in general. I understand that Sony tried to make them smaller than previous models and yes, they are smaller and look less bulky - well unfortunately sound and sound isolation was affected by it. So, if you're looking for esthetics and don't mind paying around S300 that I did out of curiosity then sure go for it - if you are looking for sound quality and better sound isolation as well lower price range then WF-1000XM4 will be the right choice. I would gladly return mine unfortunately I was so sure that WF-1000XM5 cream de la cream that got rid of box as well as all the documentation before i realized that I'd been duped :)

Pros: smaller than previous model both earbuds and charging case - looks better.

Cons: not as good sound AND sound isolation than WF-1000XM4
