About the Shure SFG-2

Be "Shure" your turntable is on the right track
Be "Shure" your turntable is on the right track
Did you know that dialing in the proper tracking force for your turntable's phono cartridge is crucial for optimum playback? Too little force, and the stylus won't seat properly in the grooves, potentially causing skipping (or mistracking), and increased wear to your stylus and precious vinyl LPs. Too much force, and you'll over-compress your cartridge's internal suspension mechanism, causing its internal signal generating assembly to become misaligned and resulting in a loss of performance.
Unfortunately, the traditional method of calibrating your 'table's tracking force — floating the tonearm, then twisting the counterweight to the desired setting — can actually be inaccurate by a wide margin. That's why we strongly recommend the Shure SFG-2 to anyone looking to really fine-tune their rig. This simple, easy-to-use stylus force gauge ensures that your cartridge is tracking precisely at the manufacturer's recommended setting, giving you the best possible sound quality, and minimizing wear and tear on your stylus and records.

I used one of these years ago and when I recently added another turntable the Shure stylus gauge was one of the first accessories purchased. Easy to use and accurate the Shure should be the first turntable accessory when purchasing a new turntable or even a new cartridge.
