So Far.I Like It
E Shane from Hereford, AZ on 5/19/2024
Went searching for a speaker switch for my home so I could enjoy music on different areas of my wrap around deck. Originally ordered a very basic 6 pair switch until I received a phone call from A Crutchfield expert. He explained why it was not the right choice and why it would not work with my receiver. After all was said and done, most of it too technical for me to understand, he recommended this one to me. Turns out it was the right choice. I like it.Easy to connect the speaker wires, individual volume controls are great and I think the sound is much improved.
Pros: Simple connections, individual on/off and zone volume control, improved audio
Cons: None to speak of

This is the second one of these. They are a little difficult to hook up unless you have a straight shot, but they do exactly what they are supposed to do and they do it well.
Pros: Performance
Cons: Hard to hook up if you have to work in small spaces and are old and clumsy like mio.

Multipurpose Speaker Selector
Stephen from LILBURN, GA on 2/8/2023
Speaker selectors like this Niles are often purchased to provide multi-room audio. My intended usage was different from the start. I was "saddled" with 2 pairs of bookshelf speakers to compare/contrast and a receiver that only had inputs for 1 pair of main speakers. In addition, these speaker pairs differed in sensitivity (90dB vs 86dB) and impedance (6 Ohm vs 8 Ohm). It became obvious to me that a speaker selector with volume control and impedance matching/protection circuitry would be very beneficial and after lengthy research this Niles SSVC-4 was selected. The installation, while a little tedious, was not very difficult aided in part by the use of jeweler's screwdrivers and off I went with the comparison. This unit proved invaluable in my efforts to compare these 2 sets of speakers, and I ultimately added a 3rd pair just for the fun of it. My only true gripe, albeit minor, is about the "stepped" volume controls. Pretty much all of the other manufacturers take the same approach so there must be something about "stepped" vs "infinite" volume controls that is in their favor. I have ultimately settled on blending the 2 pairs of bookshelf speakers together and it makes for quite a nice soundstage! Most importantly, however, my receiver hasn't blown up during this process. I'd say that's a win-win for everyone.
Pros: Relatively easy to setup and understand how to use. Relatively low profile unit
Cons: Stepped volume controls are not optimal in my "blending" audio scenario

Balanced Sound level everywhere
Crutchfield customer from Amissville, VA on 11/4/2021
I upgraded from a Niels SS-4 to the SSVC-4 as this allows controlling the volume levels in each of 4 areas - making setting the sound level perfect in each location -outdoors & out building -master bath. Installing it was simple swap out --all my remote speakers are rated at 4-6 OHMS and I'm using a 100 watt amp to drive them
Pros: Easy setup --speaker connections are large and easy to read
Cons: NONE

Amazing! Nearly perfect!
Crutchfield customer from Tacoma, WA on 7/9/2021
I love my new SSVC-4 Speaker Selector. (even though I may not be using it precisely as Niles Audio intended) My Cambridge CXA81 integrated amplifier was not performing up to potential, and there were two problems. PROBLEM #1: the CXA81 drives two pairs of speakers, one pair in the living room and another pair outside on the deck. When the volume was properly adjusted for the deck it was unbearbly loud in the living room. And, when the volume level was right for the living room, it was almost inaudible on the deck. The SSVC-4 allows me to adjust the volume for both speaker pairs independently and enjoy the music at the proper level in both locations simultaneously. Problem solved! PROBLEM #2: There is no speaker balance control on the Cambridge CXA81. The furniture arrangement in our living room absorbs much of the output from the left speaker, so the soundstage was always dramatically skewed to the right. But, by connecting the left speaker to the SSVC-4 speaker channel #1 and the right speaker to channel #2, the volume for each speaker could be controlled independently, and voila! - we suddenly had a proper stereo soundstage. A dramatic improvement. I was thrilled! Now - the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. The control knobs all click through 12 different volume increments, from zero to full volume. If, instead, the volume increase was smooth and seamless, the stereo balance could be controlled more precisely, and then the Niles unit would be absolutel

High quality selector.
Crutchfield customer from Lewisberry, PA on 4/12/2020
This is my 4th Niles selector (two 2 output and two 4 output). They are solid pieces that work great. I actually like the incremental volume controls since I can mark a reference point and go back to that exact (volume) spot if I want to. I noticed a few updates on the new one, both of which are sensible. If there is one issue I have it's that these are pricey but the less expensive alternatives have mixed reviews. I'll stick with Niles.

This speaker selector replaced an older version. Installation was simple especially with my Crutchfield rep on speaker phone ready to help. My Crutchfield advisor also helped me reconnect a Bose outdoor speaker that had become disconnected and angled incorrectly. The Niles comes with labeled tabs for every imaginable room or outdoor space in your home. On my application I used the pool, deck, porch, and garage tabs. It fits neatly with my NAD amp with both being 17" long. I reckon always reviewing the dimensions of components if they are going to be stacked or stored in a cabinet of limited siz.

Solid unit and does the job.
Bernie from Hubert, NC on 8/24/2018
Well put together piece of equipment. There is a loss of power/volume (expected) with multiple pairs of speakers connected so it works best with maximum rated power of 100 watts. As others have said the incremental volume controls takes a little getting use to but works. The removable wire connectors are great just wish they were larger and excepted larger gauge wire.

The Niles SSVC-4 works perfectly for my application. I have it paired with an Onkyo amplifier that powers the auxiliary speakers around my home. It feels very well made and looks good with my other components. If you need individual room volume control, don't hesitate to buy one for yourself.
Pros: Works exactly as described. Very well made. Looks sharp.
Cons: Not inexpensive ... but worth the price considering the quality.

Totally solved my issues
Herb from Jackson, MI on 4/2/2018
Perfect solution. When acquiring two new Peachtree integrated amps I was dumbfounded to learn they each had only a single set of speaker posts. After trying to decipher the mambo-jumbo about how to bi-wire speakers I thought the Niles was a simple and flexible solution. Set up easy and I cannot detect any sound losses. I can tune the two sets of towers for the type of music I'm playing. With rock, I prefer more volume to the Kef'sand with softer music to the Martin Logan's. Very happy with the Niles unit.
Pros: Classic answer to modern dilemma of only one set of speaker posts.
Cons: Happy to report no negatives!

KrisK from Los Angeles on 12/7/2013
it works what can I say. There is something "not elegant" about splitting up my power amps output between 4 sets of speakers. But that's the way my house is built and this unit couldn't do it any better. There is no change in sound quality running everything through the SSVC-4. It works perfect and balancing volumes in all the rooms is a breeze for me because of the layout of the house.

Fantastic product! Allows me to control 4 separate pairs of speakers and independently adjust on/off and volume level. Love having music throughout my whole first floor. (Front porch, kitchen, living room, and rear deck). Hint....it you are hooking up to the "main speakers" of an existing home theater system, you will have to recalibrate or adjust the sound level, it will be lower than before. Price seems high, but as they say, you get what you pay for!
Pros: Well constructed
Cons: Terminal Blocks are small and challenging to work with 12 gauge speaker wire.

Works like a champ
Larry from Austin, TX on 11/30/2010
Niles unit was recommended solution to attach outdoor speakers to a home theater unit by the Crutchfield advisor. Extremely happy and glad I went ahead and got the 4 speaker unit... I can finally add a set to the kitchen which I would have done years ago had I only known how easy it was. Almost wish I had gotten the SSVC-6 although I need the extra capacity right now. I really like wire connector/harness on the back. I am working in a tight space and it is difficult to hold a light and get the wires through the connector clips on the amp. With the removeable rail I was able to wireup each speaker/amp input where I could see and then just slide in the rail and screw it tight at a 90 degree angle to the back of the unit... nice engineering!

Perfect Solution
Frank from Palm Springs, CA on 4/3/2010
We bought a new property which is very open. It is a beautiful post modern glass house where all the rooms flow into one another and into two outside areas, one a pool area and one a side garden/orchard/BBQ area. We have five pair of speakers: pool, great room, BBQ area, Master Bedroom and Guest Bedroom. Putting the two bedrooms on one circuit with this speaker selector allows us to fill the property with music. Being able to control the volume in each of the areas allows a blend of sound that is very balanced. Without the individual speaker controls, we would have to have speaker controls in each area. This allows us to balance the sound from the central source. This device can handle the power, never blowing the amp. We used the Airport Express to connect our iTUNES library to our amplifier so we can fill the house with great music for our many parties. A perfect LOW COST solution which performs just as the Crutchfield advisor said it would. I am going to buy the 6 pair NILES for my primary home in Northern CA. Thank you Crutchfield! Easy set up and perfect performance!
