About the iFi NEO iDSD 2

Archer A.

A new desktop powerhouse from iFi

iFi's original NEO iDSD was an excellent piece of gear that was difficult to beat for the price. But leave it to iFi to one-up themselves. The new NEO iDSD 2 features the same sleek design, but with a slew of useful sound quality-focused improvements. Oh, and it's the world's first lossless Bluetooth DAC/headphone amp.

Lossless Bluetooth for premium wireless sound

Bluetooth sound quality has improved in recent years. But up to now, even higher-fidelity versions of the wireless technology have relied upon a type of compression resulting in a loss of detail. That's an issue that iFi found a workaround for.

The NEO iDSD 2 features Bluetooth version 5.4 with the latest Qualcomm QCC518x Bluetooth audio chip. It offers aptX Lossless, the only Bluetooth codec available today that can stream lossless CD-quality audio. All other major Bluetooth codecs are supported, too, including aptX, aptX Adaptive, and LDAC.

To put it into perspective: aptX HD, one of the most popular Bluetooth codecs, streams at around 576kbps (kilobits per second). Sony's proprietary LDAC codec streams at 990kbps. aptX Lossless clocks in at an astonishing 1,200kbps. That means you don't have to give up dynamic, rich sound for the sake of convenient wireless streaming.

Plenty of power on tap for headphones

The NEO iDSD 2's internal headphone amplifier is quite the powerhouse. It deals out a whopping 5,551mW at 32 ohms, over five times more than its predecessor. Advanced, user-selectable digital and analog processing modes let you fine-tune the sound. There's also a handy iEMatch gain mode that gets rid of the hiss some sensitive in-ear monitors have when connected to a headphone amplifier.

App control for fine adjustments

You can download the iFi Nexis app on your smartphone (available on Android™ and iOS®) for more control over the NEO iDSD 2. You can perform over-the-air firmware updates and adjust various functions and settings, like turning on and off the XBass and XSpace listening modes.

Product Research

Overview: The iFi Audio NEO iDSD 2 is a compact, tabletop DAC (digital-to-analog converter) and headphone amplifier that will add smoothness and warmth to your digital music collection, and provide a boosted signal to your headphones or your home amplifier. It is designed for use with your smartphone or tablet, your home or office computer, or a home disc player with a digital output. The unit features multiple inputs (3.5mm analog, USB 3.0, Optical and Coaxial digital), Bluetooth pairing, two headphone outputs (4.4mm balanced and 6.5mm single-ended), and two analog line outs (XLR balanced and RCA single-ended). NEO iDSD 2 is designed to be placed horizontally on a tabletop, or vertically in the included custom base made of aviation-grade aluminum. The OLED display rotates based on its orientation. It comes with a wireless remote, and a variety of USB and audio cables and adapters. The NEO iDSD 2 measures 8.429" x 1.628" x 7.7" (w/cables), and weighs 2 pounds.

Digital-to-Analog Conversion: The NEO iDSD 2 plays Hi-Res audio in the native format, including DSD (up to 512 MHz), DXD (up to 768 kHz), and PCM (up to 768 kHz). You can also listen to MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) audio from Tidal Masters with full MQA decoding. It uses a dual-core Burr-Brown "True Native" DAC chip to lower noise (by 3dB) and provide better channel separation. The signal remains in its native format, so you get the best of each format. The NEO iDSD 2 portable DAC is compatible with the following audio formats:

  • DSD: 512, 256, 128, 64 MHz (Octa-/ Quad-/ Double-/ Single-Speed DSD)
  • DXD: 768, 705.6, 384, 352.8 kHz (Double / Single-Speed DXD)
  • PCM: 768, 705.6, 384, 352.8, 192, 176.4, 96, 88.2, 48, 44.1 kHz
  • MQA: full decoding

MQA (Master Quality Authenticated): The NEO iDSD 2 supports full decoding of MQA files up to 384 kHz. The full "three unfold" decoding takes place internally, allowing you to play back MQA files and stream MQA audio from Tidal Masters, Audirvana, and Roon.

Bluetooth 5.4: The NEO iDSD 2 is equipped with the latest Bluetooth version 5.4 technology, with Qualcomm's new QCC518x Bluetooth audio chip. The device supports all Bluetooth formats, including the new aptX Lossless, the first and only codec capable of streaming CD-quality audio without using a compression method that degrades sound quality. aptX Lossless provides a maximum bitrate of 1200 kbps, compared to 420 kbps for aptX Adaptive, and 990 kbps for Sony's LDAC. The NEO iDSD 2 also supports Qualcomm's aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX Low Latency, and "regular" aptX, plus Sony's LDAC and HWA's LHDC. The unit can store up to 8 paired devices.

Headphone Amplifier: The iFi NEO iDSD 2 has a strong headphone amplifier that can drive most headphones and in-ear monitors. It is five times more powerful than the original NEO iDSD with a maximum headphone output power of 5551mW @ 32Ω, outperforming many dedicated headphone amplifiers. There are two headphone outputs: a 4.4mm balanced output, and a 6.3mm (1/4") single-ended output.

Gain Control: The NEO iDSD 2 features four gain modes to choose from: Normal (0dB), Turbo (+6dB), Nitro (+16dB), and iEMatch (-12dB). Auto iEMatch reduces the gain for high-sensitivity headphones and in-ear monitors (IEMs). This reduces the hissing sound in sensitive headphones, maintaining the dynamic range of the device. The Turbo and Nitro settings can be used for more power-hungry headphones.

Sync Clock: The device is equipped with iFi's GMT (Global Master Timing) femto-precision internal clock with a smart storage cache to dramatically reduce digital jitter for clean, accurate sound. It has an input for a 10 MHz External Sync Clock for even greater clock signal accuracy. If no 10 MHz External clock is detected, or if there is an error in the external clock, the NEO iDSD 2 automatically switches back to the internal clock.

Inputs: The NEO iDSD 2 features three digital inputs: USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 compatible), Optical (Toslink), and Coaxial (RCA). The USB audio input connects the unit to your computer's audio source. The S/PDIF optical (Toslink) and coaxial (RCA) inputs connect digital sources such as Apple TV, Google Chromecast, PS5, Xbox, or a high-end CD transport. The digital audio data is processed by the built-in XMOS 16-Core microcontroller chip, which is optimized for sound quality. It has double the clock speed and four times the memory as 8-core chips. The front panel input selector cycles through the USB, Bluetooth, Coaxial, Optical, and 3.5mm (Analog) inputs. An "Auto" setting detects any incoming input signal and automatically switches to that input.

Line Outputs: In addition to the front-panel headphone outputs, the DAC/headphone amp features both balanced and single-ended analog outputs on the rear panel. An audio signal is sent to both outputs, so you can use the outputs simultaneously. The analog outputs can be configured as fixed for connecting it to an integrated amp or preamp, or set to variable for connecting to a power amp or active speakers. When set to fixed, you can no longer adjust the volume using the multi-function knob. You can switch between fixed and variable output using the multi-function knob and power button.

Digital Filters: There are four Digital Filters, selectable from the front multi-function dial:

  • Bit-Perfect (BP): Bit Perfect (i.e. no digital filtering); no pre- or post-ringing
  • Standard (STD): Modest filtering; modest pre- and post-ringing
  • Minimum Phase (MIN): Minimum phase, slow roll-off; minimum pre- and post-ringing
  • Gibbs Transient-Optimized (GTO): Up-sampled to 352.8/384 kHz, minimum filtering; no pre-ringing and minimum post-ringing

XSpace/XBass II: Two newly added analog processing modes, XSpace and XBass II, have been added to help you fine-tune the sound. XSpace Matrix recreates a holographic sound field for listening with headphones, making it sound as if you're listening to external speakers. XBass II adds back the bass response lost during the conversion process. There are three settings: XBass (low frequency boost), Presence (upper midrange boost), and XBass + Presence (low frequency + upper midrange boost).

TFT Display: The easy-to-read 2" TFT color display shows the current audio format, sampling rate, volume, and input mode. It is located on the left side when the device is placed horizontally, and at the top when vertical. The display rotates to match the unit's orientation. You can set the brightness of the display by selecting one of the following: High, Med, Low, or Off. If Off is selected, the display goes to sleep 3 seconds after an operation is performed. You can adjust the brightness using the multi-function knob or the included wireless remote.

Wireless Remote: The NEO iDSD 2 comes with a small wireless remote control that lets you control the OLED display brightness, select the input, mute/unmute, and adjust the volume. The remote is 1.6" x 3.4" x 0.27", and is powered by a CR2025 coin-cell battery.

iFi Nexis App: The new iFi Nexis app offers a long list of features and settings for the NEO iDSD 2. Not only can you control the device through the app, you can perform over-the-air (OTA) upgrades. The app helps you connect the NEO iDSD 2 to your Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz network or nearby Bluetooth device. The iFi Nexis app is compatible with iPhone and iPod touch with iOS 11.0 or later, and Android devices running version 5.0 and up.

Power: The NEO iDSD 2 is powered by the included iPower 2 DC power supply (12V / 1.8A). Optional power supplies from 9V / 1.5A to 15V / 0.9A can be used. The iPower 2 features Active Noise Cancellation II to actively cancel incoming EMI/RFI noise.
