I was really looking forward to try this audiolab CD transport. I have seen some reviews about some failures such as scratched discs and other malfunctions, in my case I have noticed malfunctions for example the CD ends and when I press to remove it again, it pulls it back in without touching any buttons, just like I press the buttons on the remote and sometimes they don't work. The sound quality and construction are excellent.

Pros: Buen sonido y construida como un tanque. Good sound and constructed like a tank.

Cons: Las reseñas de fallas están hay todavia esperaba que atraves del tiempo las mejorarian pero veo que nó. The malfunctions reviewed are still there, I was hoping that over time they would improve them but I see that they haven't.

Welp, my poor ol' ears aren't the most reliable narrators thanks to that Ted Nugent concert in 1978. Still, initial impression impressive. Optical connection to my Peachtree M25s produces delightful detail to faves longtime and novel. Greatly appreciate its straightforward facade and substantial-feeling remote. Three year manufacturer's warrantee and Crutchfield's solid rock support I sense a LTR!

Brings CDs to life!

Was getting back into audio after many years of raising kids, etc. Have long since lost my old CD player, but still have many CDs. I have the AudioLab 6000A Play amp, and this CDT is a perfect match. I can not believe how good CDs sound. I love vinyl, but the convenience and sonic quality of CDs is amazing. It's been so fun rediscovering my old CDs, and now I'm buying CDs again (which is a plus because CDs are usually quite cheaper than vinyl). I highly recommend this for anyone interested in renewing their love of CDs, or discovering them for the first time. And, typical, AudioLab build quality. I wanted to add...I read some reviews that this unit scratches CDs on load/unload. I have never seen that happen, not once. Love this thing!

Pros: Super easy digital connections. Works perfectly. Matches my amp!

Cons: None.

Well built, slot loading works well, and I like the idea that it's not encumbered with its own DAC-I'd much rather use a downstream DAC. Both optical and coax outputs sound excellent and alike. A nice addition to a two-channel system for those who still have a large collection of CDs and are convinced that there's a quality to the music that's somehow different from that obtained by streaming.

Excellent transport

James W. from SOUTH HAVEN, MI on 4/17/2024

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This is a transport in that it has no internal DAC. It uses slot loading which works great, it's faster to load than other decks I've owned. I've read other reviews saying this scratches cd's. I haven't seen any damage that is obvious. Besides, car cd players used slot loading and unless you were careless, they didn't cause damage that could be heard. The cdt6000 sounds great hooked up to my Pioneer sc-lx 501 AVR. And in the future I might upgrade to an external DAC.

Pros: Extremely good transport for the price

Sounds great, but too annoying to live with

I was excited about this transport when I first got it, because it really does sound wonderful. My only reservation beforehand was that it can't display text, but I could accept that trade-off. Then the frustrations started to pile up. The currently fashionable rows of tiny, undifferentiated buttons are charcoal-gray-on-black, and so nearly flush with the face-plate that they can barely even be felt by those who don't read Braille. You need a flashlight to determine which one to push and then find its location. The remote control has a more narrow field of view than I have experienced before, so you have to get more nearly in front of the player for it to respond. It responds slowly to any command - especially Eject. (what is there for it to contemplate when you want to get your disc out?) The deal breaker: after only five minutes it dumps out of Pause to the beginning of the disc. Six minute phone call? You can just listen from the start of that symphony again. Finally one day I realized that my experience of the Audiolab was joyless. I bought a player from a brand known for durability, and that also can play high res music files from a flash drive. It sounds slightly different, but still really good - and I am content. I feel a bit guilty about giving this machine just one star, but the annoyance factor so outweighed its excellent audio performance that I got rid of it. Isn't that the bottom line?

If you want to be able to enjoy a spaciously airy sound stage, to be able to discern the various instruments being played, and experience smooth frequency response with expressively natural dynamic range, then this is the cd transport for you! Don't resist or force the loading mechanism and you will be fine. Any scratches that very rarely may occur are so fine they are hard to see and don't affect audio playback at all, so relax and enjoy the fantastic sound. Note that there is a functional eject button on the remote, contrary to what is noted under Product Research.

After a few months of a vinyl swing, I got fully into CDs, and now dove in the deep end with my first dedicated transport, the Audiolab 6000CDT, replacing my pretty darn good Sony UBP-X700 UHD Blu-ray player. It's mainly what I expected: better top end, separation and imaging. Some surprises: improved timbre on all percussion, clearer background sounds, and very oddly some better bass presentation (small low end effects I missed before with much better bass texture). Plus it reads and plays almost instantaneously, which is nice. The display is nice and big, and the remote allows me to type on numbers for specific tracks. I inserted and ejected a spotless CD about a dozen times to test scratching, my main concern, and saw none. The convenience of the slot loader is nice when I want to switch around a few CDs, and it appears covered by foam to prevent dust incursion. I really appreciate the temperature-controlled high accuracy clock, so I have more confidence using it with more DACs without concerning myself too much with jitter. And bonus is its capabilities in reading extremely scratched CDs. One of mine was keyed deeply, and only had a skip on one track! While not specified for CD-R, I found it played one of mine just fine.

Pros: Excellent, detailed sound Fast, damage-free slot loading Large bright display Easy-to-use, solid remote Temperature-controlled crystal clock

Cons: I didn't experience the slot loader scratching CDs after a dozen tests, but some have.

Audiolab 6000CDT - Buyer Beware

Bill from LOUISVILLE, KY on 7/15/2023

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Great sounding, well made transport. From that perspective I made the right decision. Unfortunately, it is totally 100% unacceptable that this player scratches my brand new CDs. Any CD, really, at any given time. I played 2 new CDs in a row and closely inspected them before and after 1 play. Both had 2 scratches in exactly the same place. Went back and looked more closely at a handful of CDs I've played recently and although they were new too, all of them had some kind of scratches. You can hear it when you put the CD in the slot that it is "grinding" to grab the CD - I think it happens then, not when playing or ejecting. I am as mad, disappointed, frustrated and depressed as I can be. I could have bought the new Denon for the same price. May have not sounded quite as good, but would not destroy my valuable CD collection. Being an overseas brand, not much hope in getting this addressed, but believe me, I will try. If leaving bad reviews all over the place works, I'll update my post here. I would NOT suggest buying this thing and be skeptical buying any Audiolab product.

Pros: Sounds great.

Cons: Scratches all my CDs

I turned it on fed it a CD played it for a while, turned it off, and it never turned on again. Troubleshooting it with a Crutchfield again, and asked them if they could replace it with the Cambridge CD transport which they did and my Cambridge CD transport works fantastic. two audio lab CD transports. They both had the same problem. While it was working, the audio lab transport sounded good but when you turned it off, it would not turn back on. and Crutchfield was very nice and returned my two CDs that were stuck in the units. I admit I was one of those skeptics that thought "bits are bits," and as long as I was hooked up via digital, the player didn't really matter. I had an entry-level NAD CD player (purchased here) hooked up to a premium Burson DAC and I was happy for the most part. Well, fast forward to being offered a deal on the Audiolab 6000CDT. I took the bait and hooked it up to my stereo. First off, the build quality is superb for the money here. No complaints, other than that the remote is bit bulky (but Audiolab uses it for multiple products, so understandable). The sound is noticeably airier and spacious compared to the NAD. It is enough of a difference to make me cycle back through my favorite albums again. Thanks for making a great transport at a reasonable price!

Pros: Build quality, Spaciousness, Better than my previous NAD

Cons: Not 100% confident in the slot-loading mechanism

I picked this to match the Cambridge AXR100 I purchased. It is simple to set up and operate and having the option of a digital connector makes playing my CD's fun and satisfying again. 'As Good As It Gets' for the numbers

Verified employee review (What's this?)

The LS50-2 is an outstanding all in one hi-fi system. IMO the only speakers that surpasses it are electrostatics. That said, it has a dynamic range electrostatics cannot match and the cost differential is pricey to say the least. My set up is a near field system in front of my computer (I am in a NYC apartment lacking space for a traditional setup) mounted on IsoAcoustics speaker stands that decouple the sound from the desktop surface. This adds a great deal of detail to the soundstage. It also helped to add a pair of KC62 subs that freed up the bottom end, extending to phenomenally deep bass which in turn added more support to soundstage clarity. But what really took the LS50-2s to the next level was adding a Furman Elite 20PFI that cleaned the power coming up from the grid. This added even more warmth, soundstage and clarity as the icing on the cake (definitely not snake oil). You will feel, sense and hear the difference. Couple this with your favorite streaming HiFi digital source app and you have the world of music before you. The only caveat is that when the original recorded music source is flawed you'll hear the holes that happened within the studio engineering. This might disappoint you, but when the source material is truly HiFi the sound is absolutely jaw dropping. If the LS50-2s are deployed for video you will throw out your sound bar as the experience of watching video is completely transformed. For the $ this is as good as it can possibly get. Highly recommended.

Pros: Best all in one system for the money. With the addition of decoupling stands, K62 Subs and power grid cleaning, I think you achieve the best of what is possible for budget HiFi. Amazing detail, warmth and soundstage.

Cons: They sound so good you have to keep the volume reasonable to protect your valuable hearing.

This was a toss up between the drawer loading Cambridge Audio CXC v2 Transport versus this slot loader Audiolab 6000CDT. Despite the fact that many reviewers had reservations with slot loaders, between computers and cars, there are many more slot loading applications than I realized. Although I had come across reviews that claimed that the Audiolab "scratches" CDs, I did not experience this. Even if it did, the Audiolab was able to read "defective" CDs that other players cannot, which is a good thing because I have many very old CDs. The beauty of the Audiolab is its clarity in presenting massed strings, such as massed violins. This was true when I was listening to Saint-Saens Organ Symphony Piano Concerto No. 2. I noticed how "quiet" the quiet passages were and the lack of "distortion" on the whole. One negative is the remote, which has too many small buttons. But I guess the remote was intended to control more than the Transport. Another point is that I am glad I had gotten the Silver version, instead of the Black, as the Silver shows exactly where the CD slot is located, instead of fumbling in the dark.

I took my time with this review, the unit arrived on September 30, and I am just now getting around to posting the review. First, this thing sounds incredible. I have it hooked up to a Schiit Bifrost 2/64 (newest model) and it sounds fantastic. Compared to my previous Marantz CD5005, the soundstage is both wider and deeper. This pairing is also much kinder to compressed recordings. It also reads CDs that no other player I have tried can read. A few months ago, my local public library sold all of their CDs for 50¢ each, and about 10 of the discs I got were too badly scratched for the Marantz, and the cheap Sony unit I had before that, and for the player in my car. This thing reads them all with no problem. I also read that this unit has the potential to scratch discs. I have found that, yes, it does scratch discs, but in my experience, the scratches are very minor. They are also not present on every disc, maybe only on one of every 5 discs. I am going to attempt to attach some pictures, the first three are discs that were unreadable by other players and the last is the scratches left by this player. The scratches are the horizontal line of marks below the center hole, the line on top is a reflection. They are very minor, but I am knocking a star because at this price, there should not be any scratches.

Pros: Sounds great Reads anything

Cons: Does have potential to scratch discs, though the scratches are minor, don't impact every disc played, and this thing will definitely still be able to read them afterwards!

Try a CD Transport instead of a CD Player

I thought that all CD "spinners" were the same as long as you could feed the digital into a good DAC. That's why I was so surprised at the difference this made when compared with the digital out from my NAD C 516BEE, a rather decent player in its own right. The difference was immediate and the ability to play older worn CD (bought used) was also noticeable. The limit is that this transport only reads "red book" CDs, but, if that's all you have, then, by all means get this (and pair it with a good DAC).

Pros: Sounds noticeably better than comparably priced CD players

Cons: Only reads "red book" CDs

Read most all reviews pros and cons, and comparisons at this price point. Arrived plug and play Diane Schuur & The Count Basie Orchestra into a NAD C 388 Kilpish Hersey iii speakers I was told I needed to add a sub woofer wrong what I needed was to add the 6000CDT. The heavens opened right there in my living room. A most beautiful melodious sound quality probably unmatched at this price point. If you have 4 plus figures for a transport knock yourself out show off that you have disposable income but it won't increase a discerable difference of pleasure to your ears that this unit delivers. Again an "extremely" nice unit for the price point.

Pros: Great sound

Cons: Have yet to discover

I have been using the digital output from my 30 year old Sony CD player connected to my dac, so I was skeptical that the Audiolab 6000CDT would make that much of a difference. Afterall, "bits is bits, "right? I was amazed at the difference I heard with the 6000CDT. The soundstage width expananded, the spread throughout the soundstage was more evenly distributed, there was improved clarity in the sound. It was as if there was some signal processisng going on before the data stream left the player. When you hear something like this, you more fully appreciate the skill recording engineers have. Highly recommended.

Pros: Assuming you have good downstream components, the Audiolab will present them with accurate information.

Cons: It may be too revealing for your ears or equipment.

A worthwhile upgrade to CD sonic performance

The 6000CDT is an amazing transport that really does wonders for my CD collection. Every CD I've played through it has been rendered with greater clarity and spaciousness than ever before. I don't know how they do it, but it is a fantastic transformation. A well-made CD recording, such as my Verve Stan Getz, suddenly comes alive with much greater presence and authority. I give it 4 stars only because I find the supplied remote to be a bit finicky. I am feeding the output of the 6000CDT into my Bluesound Powernode digital input and powering my KEF Q350 stand mount speakers. I should note that I replaced my prior Onkyo CD player with the new Audiolab 6000CDT. I expected a small improvement but was pleasantly surprised at such an astounding and obvious upgrade in sonic performance with the Audiolab.

Pros: Clear and accurate sound More space and authority CD sonics much improved over standard players

Cons: The remote is a bit finicky

First off...Crutchfield customer service is 5/5 stars. No complaint whatsoever. Worldclass all the way. I returned the Audiolab 6000CDT after owning it for maybe 1.5 hrs. Two tests it had to pass...#1 - Not mar my CDs, and #2 - Make an improvement on my system. I inserted a new, unblemished CD that I cared nothing for multiple times into the player; no mars. Test #1 passed. The 6000CDT was to replace a 10-12 year old cheap DVD player that I currently use AS A TRANSPORT. This was to be the ONLY change in my system. A slam dunk, right? Wrong. I couldn't believe it! It sounded like an FM broadcast! Horrible. Again, only the transport changed, nothing else. I thought I'd be going from an entry-level Honda to a Porsche...any Porsche...I did NOT expect a downgrade. Then, the salt in the wound; inspecting the ejected CD, MAR! WHAT? The "test" CD was fine, why now? Ultimately, the 6000CDT is being exchanged for the Cambridge Audio CXC v.2. Honestly, I am floored by how thin and lifeless the 6000CDT sounded compared to an old, inexpensive, DVD player used as a transport. Am I wrong? When using anything as a transport only can it color the sound this much? I didn't expect this. I can't accept this. Could this particular 6000CDT be defective someway? Really...night & day difference in favor for the cheapie DVD player used as a transport. Also, I'm NOT of the opinion that a transport is a transport...the 6000CDT should have stomped all over my cheap transport!

Pros: Quality construction. The remote feels solid. Good display.

Cons: Marred my CD and sounded like an FM broadcast vs. CD audio.

Spectacular! I was initially skeptical about spending so much for a CD transport, but was convinced to give it a try after reading a few reviews on the internet. I certainly like how it pairs with the 6000A integrated amplifier. My CDs sound wonderful. Even 10 to 15 year old CD-Rs I cut on my computer back in the day - and not treated very kindly over the years - are read flawlessly (to my ear) and sound fantastic. If you can afford it and especially if you own the 6000A, I highly recommend this device. I have been an audiophile for almost 30 years. I recently went back to vinyl, and was ready to trash my CD collection. But with audiophile vinyl's costing almost $60 an album, I decided to give my CD collection a second chance. My Rotel CD player plugged into my MicroMega DAC produced a blaring, harsh, and bright sound. It was too fatiguing to listen to. After reading so many reviews about the Audiolab transport, and from watching this Youtube video: https://youtu.be/JAfk5a5M5ds I decided to give this unit an audition. Crutchfield had a 60 day in home trial period. I also swapped out my digital Coax cable with an Analysis Plus Black. After 3 weeks of listening to this unit, I found the sound to be very natural, neutral. Instruments were detailed, the imaging was just right, not too forward. Highs were sweet, airy, and not harsh. I could hear the brush strokes from cymbals on my jazz CD's. Female Vocals were warm and clear. Even old magazine subscription sample CD's came alive. I am quite sure this unit will continue to open up further as it breaks in.

Pros: Great budget transport

Cons: None

If you don't think it matters whats playing your CD's, you're mistaken

This review is for people that have a large CD collection and still love to play them & probably are still buying them, (like me). For people that are using a DVD or Bluray player to play your CD's (Like I was). For people that have an older or basic CD player (Like I did). For people that didn't think there was a very big difference as far as what you played your discs on as long as the downstream components were good (like me). I replaced my 20+ year old Panasonic DVD-RV32 player with this transport. I have been using an external DAC via the optical out for years on my Panasonic. It'a actually a nice high quality (for the time) CD player that just happens to play DVD's. I have literally played thousands of CD's on that player over the years as I listen to them daily. So I know what my CD's sound like when played through it after having it for so long. All I did was unplug the optical cable from my panasonic and plugged it into this transport. Everything else down the chain is exactly the same. The first CD I played was my original purchased back in the day Alice In Chains MTV Unplugged. I was stunned as I sat there and listened to it. I am not an audiofile so I wont use any fancy terms, but the detail and clarity is amazing. The bass tones are so real sounding. It felt like I was in the audience. I always thought I felt that way before with my panasonic, but this is a whole different level. All my CD's sound better through this 6000CDT. Highly recommended.

Pros: Look and feel, nice remote, Large readable display, fast disc reading, silent operation, solid disc handling, immediate response to onboard controls and remote

Cons: Mat finish shows every fingerprint and holds onto dust

If you still have your Cds from back in the day. Buy this. If you don't have a DAC. Buy one, so you can buy this. In the Hi Fi world its all to normal for one to spend thousands of dollars for small incremental gains. After falling into the surround sound AV trap long ago. Then followed by the simplicity of steaming, I felt for years my once great system just wasn't what it used to be. Deciding to make a move back to two channel stereo and having hundreds of CDs, I purchased the 6000cdt. All it took was the first 30 seconds of a CD I haven't listened in 25 years. Candlebox "Don't You" jumped out at me like my Klipcsh Epic CF3s ( bought new in 1994 ) just received a shot of adrenaline. I was in a state of shock. After years of making excuses ranging from " the horrible acoustics in my home" to " its just an AV receiver mainly for movies" I was dumbfounded by what I was hearing. The depth, the soundstage. It was if my two CF3s were one. They haven't sounded like this since the 90s. This piece makes all your components better. My Marantz AV is producing sound like it never has before. My CF3s are singing like I always knew they could. See Cody if you have questions. He was a great help and also refunded me $100 cause the Audiolab went on sale just after I purchased it. My current setup: marantz sr5011 av- Schiit mode dac- audiolab- Klipcsh epic CF3s & 12" sub.

Pros: It makes all your components perform better.

Cons: I'm sure there's some. But I cant go there right now cause I'm so happy.

This is a great sounding, solidly built transport. I was already using the digital out of my previous CD player with a separate DAC (Denafrips Ares II). I have a few discs that would not play reliably and areas of my wood floor I could stomp and get the player to skip. This Audiolab not only plays the slightly damaged 'I survived your college years too' discs and hasn't miss-tracked or skipped, it's detail retrieval, sonic clarity and even soundstage depth have improved notably. I was hoping/expecting the Audiolab to handle the damaged discs, I was pleasantly surprised by the sonic improvements. If you have CD's and already care about your playback experience enough to be running an outboard DAC, the 6000CDT is a serious piece. My only small gripe is the textured Matt finish. The texture tends to hold onto lints and dust even with microfiber rags. Long live the compact disc.

Pros: Sounds great, plays marginal discs.

Cons: Black textured finish is a little high-maintenance.

As others have noted the sound is great on this unit. I bought it to pair with the 6000a. I did, however, read the reviews indicating scratches on CDs with this unit and tested it thoroughly as soon as it arrived. I was hoping the reports were an anomaly, perhaps a couple defective units. As soon as I powered it up I took 7 brand new CDs from my collection, inspected the surface thoroughly in the light, loaded and unloaded them, and then inspected again. 3 out of the 7 were scratched just after loading and unloading. Very light scratches, but in a repeating pattern. Probably due to the slot loading mechanism. I returned it and am sadly considering the Cambridge CXC v2 to replace, even though it doesn't visually match the 6000a and adds an additional remote. I did listen to some older CDs I didn't care about scratching and they sounded great, noticeably better than through my older Denon CD player with it's own DAC. And one that was badly scratched from car play did not skip in the Audiolab as it does in the Denon.

Pros: great sound, great looks, solid feel

Cons: slot loader scratches CDs

Since DACs continue to improve steadily, and there is one in my network player, I decided to replace my fine fifteen year old Marantz CD player with a transport. This rig weighs twice as much and is built like a tank. I wish it could display CD text and that it came with a simpler remote that just controls this unit's functions, but otherwise it is entirely satisfactory, and I expect it to serve me well for many years.

this is my second CDT6000. 2 separate systems. Loading mechanism a little sticky at first. Seems to have smoothed out after some hrs of play and numerous CD's loaded. The sound is just great, providing you have a good DAC. You wont be disappointed. You could pay a lot more, but, I don't think you can justify it. You may upgrade the DAC for better sound, but NO need to do that with 6000CDT. True winner.......

No fatigue after hours of listening. The slot for inserting and ejecting discs is very smooth. I've put in some discs that were less than perfect, no skips. Scratches CDs

Daniel from Littleton, CO on 7/1/2021

I just received this and regrettably I will be returning it as it does indeed scratch CD's. I sacrificed about a half dozen CDs making sure I was right and it seems to scratch only about 10% of the CD's I tried but that's significant enough that I'm in the process of returning the unit. Very disappointing as the songs I did hear sounded fantastic and I wish this thing wasn't defective I'd love to listen to it more. Clearly, however there is a QA issue here as others are reporting this not just here but elsewhere across the internet. Hats off to Crutchfield for making returns so easy but I do have to question why this is being sold with what appears to me to be a significant design flaw... maybe it's a small failure rate and I was unlucky but I'm moving on to other brands at this point.

Pros: From what I did hear it sounded fantastic. Build quality seemed excellent.

Cons: Scratches CDs. Remote is clunky and works if you push the buttons lightly but if you depresses hard it doesn't work... very odd.

After reading all the glowing reviews I figured a new dedicated transport would probably best my vintage high end cd player. Unfortunately, it did not, and I ended up returning it. This transport is detailed, and reproduces bass ridiculously well, but overall did not sound near as pleasing to my ears as my player. The Audiolab just couldn't match the effortless, fully fleshed out presentation of the other player. I will miss the bass though. To be fair, my player is twice the size and weight , and was over 2k when new, and as it turns out unfair competition. The Audiolab transport is quite good and deserves the praise it gets, however it is not a giant killer. I connected it with Straight Wire Info-link cable to a PS Audio dac.

I am very happy with this CD Transport. My CDs sound better than ever. Every time I put one on it's like hearing it for the first time. The definition, separation, and delicacy of the music is remarkable. There were some issues with getting the correct connection to my specific DAC. I'd recommend taking a little more time selecting the right cable up front. Obviously we need to pick a digital out that is compatible with the digital in options on my specific DAC. A few frustrating days were had. BUT, Crutchfield tech support is responsive and knowledgeable so quickly resolved the issue.

This is very good transport for the price. I was apprehensive about purchasing a slot loader, but this became non-issue. The 6000CDT is almost silent and the read-ahead buffer really makes a difference. I have not had a CD that this player could not play. Originally I had purchased an Arcam CDS50 (For SACD support), but my CDS50 was defective - the tray would not eject, so I returned the CDS50 to Crutchfield and picked-up the 6000CDT (Decided not to have SACD support). Crutchfield was excellent as always. My only real item on my wish list would be to have a AES/EBU Digital Audio out-put on the 6000CDT.

I wanted to updated my digital frontend in my audio system and decided to try a Cd transport even though I had a late model Marantz CD player.. My long time audio buddy suggested the Audiolab 6000CDT as a possible model to try without spending megabucks.. The Audiolab is a very solidly built unit but I was a little apprehensive about not having the traditional type Cd drawer to load a Cd into.. The slot mechanisms works perfectly which put my fears to rest.. I paired the Audiolab with a Chord Qutest Dac which I was using in my headphone system. The sound quality I'm getting now is the best digital system I've owned to date. Delivery is always prompt and well packed. Thanks Crutchfield..

I have never owned a CD transport prior to this, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm pleasantly surprised, using the Toslink SPDF optical connection to my DAC, and it compares favorably to streaming high resolution music from TIDAL. So far I get a 'calmer' sound from the Audiolab than from streaming, with less listening fatigue. The bass is a bit tighter, the highs are a bit more analog sounding, which is a good thing in my book. The unit operates really well too, it feels solid, the buttons have nice quality, and everything needed to play CDs is there on the front of the machine, without looking cluttered. The remote control functions well, but it's definitely a generic type since many of the buttons have no function with this product, so it can definitely be characterized as being a bit cluttered. All in all I'm very happy with this investment, and hope the impression of high quality will last. I enjoy having the base to grow from as I upgrade my DAC in the future.

Pros: Beautiful and clean appearance. Great sound from CDs (relative to streaming via the same DAC) Solid piece, impression of quality is high.

Cons: Remote control is functional but the extra buttons with no function are a bit unnecessary (not that I would pay more for a better one).

I recently upgraded my system to an integrated amplifier by PSAudio. Their DAC is amazing and sounds natural. I was previously using an old Onkyo to play my CDs and I was floored by how much clearer each instrument sounded with the PSAudio acting as the DAC instead of the Onkyo. I was expecting an improvement, but that that big! Anyways. Then I managed to convince myself to also upgrade my CD player. So I started looking into transports, because there was no point to buy a player, because I would never use its DAC. I was fairly skeptical of spending so much money on a transport, because I figured I wouldn't really be able to hear the difference. Boy was I wrong. The Audiolab sounds absolutely amazing. Everything I've thrown at it so far is very crisp and clear. Instruments are easily identifiable, evne for metal albums. This leads me to conclude that the Onkyo was quite mediocre at reading CDs. Well worth my money, and that's saying a lot from an "audiophile" skeptic.

Pros: Very nice aesthetics. Perfect digital reproduction of the CDs. Nice display.

Cons: Doesn't show the list of tracks. Doesn't show remaining album time, only remaining track time. Remote is a combo for their amplifier also. I would prefer it was standalone. Slight delay when pausing and skipping tracks. Probably has to do with their buffer.
