About the Crux SWRTY-61N Wiring Interface

Bob Bihlmayer

Keep those factory options

Crux's SWRTY-61N interface ensures that you can keep the factory steering wheel controls in your Toyota when installing an aftermarket radio. With compatible receivers, you can also keep your Toyota's backup camera and auxiliary input. Connect this interface to the wires on your new stereo's wiring harness, and you've covered the power, ground, and factory speaker connections for your new stereo.

You'll only be able to retain your steering wheel audio controls with a compatible car stereo made by Alpine, Blaupunkt, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, or Sony. No other brands are currently compatible. Check the Details tab to see if steering wheel audio controls are retained in your vehicle.

Product Research

Features

Radio Replacement Interface for Toyota: The CRUX SWRTY-61N is a radio replacement interface for select 2012-up Toyota vehicles. It facilitates the integration of select aftermarket radios to enable retention of certain factory features when replacing a factory-installed radio. This enhanced interface retains the factory rear-view (backup) camera, USB port, and aux input, plus is pre-programmed for retention of steering wheel controls. It also includes navigation outputs.

Note: This CRUX adapter will only retain steering wheel audio controls with car stereos made by Pioneer, Sony, Jensen, Alpine, Clarion, Kenwood, JVC, and Blaupunkt.

Vehicle Compatibility: The CRUX SWRTY-61N is supported by the following Toyota vehicles; with non-amplified factory audio systems (as of 9/17/2019).

Make Model Year
Scion FRS 2012-2016
iM 2016
tC 2012-2016
xB 2012-2015
xD 2012
Toyota 4-Runner 2012-2019
Avalon 2012-2018
Camry 2012-2017
Corolla 2012-2017
Highlander 2013-2018
RAV4 2012-2018
Sequoia 2012-2018
Tacoma 2013-2019
Tundra 2013-2019
Venza 2012-2015
Note: Does not support vehicles with factory JBL amplified audio systems.

Supported Aftermarket Head Units: The CRUX SWRTY-61N radio replacement interface will only retain steering wheel audio controls with car stereos made by Pioneer, Sony, Alpine, Clarion, Kenwood, JVC, Jensen, Dual/Axxera, and Boss.

Steering Wheel Control Compatible: The CRUX SWRTY-61N features a steering wheel control output for compatible aftermarket head units. The steering wheel control output consists of a right-angle 3.5mm connector and a light blue/yellow wire (use the connection that your aftermarket head unit is fitted with). The SWRTY-61N interface module will work with any of the listed aftermarket head units, by setting its dip-switches (see owner's manual for appropriate setting).

Retains Backup Camera: This radio replacement interface also retains your vehicle's factory back-up camera; the included harness contains a male composite video connector that plugs into the female composite video camera input on the back of your aftermarket head unit.

Note: 2012-2018 Toyota Highlander vehicles without factory navigation radio will not retain the factory back up camera.

Retains USB Port: The included USB-TY01 USB Retention Adapter allows you to retain the factory USB port. This port is handy for connecting your USB devices and keeping your phone charged. This USB adapter harness will work with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, except if your vehicle has multiple USB ports or if your new aftermarket radio doesn't have a high-amperage charging port (1.5A and greater).

Auxiliary Input Retention: You also get to keep your vehicle's factory auxiliary (3.5mm) input. The included harness contains male stereo RCA connectors which plug into your aftermarket head unit's rear-panel Aux input. If your aftermarket head unit contains a 3.5mm Aux input, then you will need a female stereo RCA to male stereo minijack adapter cable (sold separately).

Navigation Outputs: The CRUX SWRTY-61N radio replacement interface module provides a VSS (vehicle speed sense), Parking Brake, and a Reverse Gear output to make installing an aftermarket Navigation radio simpler and less time consuming.

Q
I am trying to install a new stereo system, (an atoto s8) would this wire harness work for a 2013 RAV4 XLE without JBL audio system? The new stereo system will connect to the back up camera, speakers, steering wheel controls, etc basically whatever the old one did. Will this harness work for that?
stephen  Sep 27, 2022

A
That Crux adapter will be able to retain features like your backup camera, steering wheel controls, and your speakers however it will not retain factory Sirius XM if you subscribed to it nor your Vehicle Settings Menu ( if you could adjust background lighting, font size etc in a separate monitor on the dash). Since we do not carry the Atoto we cannot guarantee it will do all those things for that unit, but the adapter is capable of retaining those features in general.

Q
Will this interface kit maintain steering wheel controls, backup camera and the rest of stock controls on my 2015 Tacoma TRD off-road?
kenguzca  Aug 20, 2022
1 answer
A
As long as your Tacoma does not have the JBL Audio system, you will be able to retain your steering wheel controls, back up camera and potentially everything else. If your particular model displayed certain performance gauges like tire pressure, etc then you would not retain that but we do have adapters that would. If it didn't then that Crux would keep everything with a compatible radio.

Will this work with a Pioneer AVH-2550NEX in a 2016 Toyota Tacoma?

Yes. When I originally purchased the unit from Crutchfield I purchased the Steering Wheel wiring assembly SWRTY-61N for the Pioneer unit. I have all the wire harnesses and assemblies already. I hope that answered your question.

Will the OEM backup camera work on a Toyota Highlander 2019 without GPS navigation? Info in box: "2013-2017 Highlander vehicles without OEM navigation will NOT retain the factory backup camera".
william  Jan 08, 2021

A
This wiring harness does retain the backup camera in that vehicle when installed with a compatible aftermarket radio (one that has a composite video camera input). We have advisors that you can reach by calling 1-800-324-9695 who will be happy to discuss your gear to check compatibility with this interface and help recommend all the vehicle specific installation parts that you will need.

Q
Will the backup camera automatically come on when going into reverse like OEM? (13 RAV4 if it's relevant)
karl  Nov 15, 2018

A
On my 2013 RAV4, the steering wheel controls and backup camera work, but the USB retention adapter didn't work with my JVC KW - M845BW head unit. I read elsewhere that this is because the RAV4's dash port is a combination USB AUX and the head unit can't understand the input via that combination port -- it would connect, then shortly crash. I got an after market USB-only port that fits my dash and connects directly to the USB cable on the head unit, bypassing the car wiring. It works great now.
andrea  Jan 10, 2019

Yes, I did not have a backup camera OEM, but when I installed, the camera came up when I went to reverse

Yes the camera will come on when put into reverse. But it does take a couple seconds.

Q
Anyone use this in a 2014.5 model Camry (manufactured after 12/2013, when the back up camera became standard on all models)? If so, did the camera and steering wheel controls work? I called Crutchfield and Crux, and neither of them knew for sure if it would work on the 2014.5 model.

Yes and the steering wheel works except for fast forwarding through songs and the center button. Which apparently, w/ the correct cord, you can view back up camera in motion. Useful if you're pulling something
