About the JVC HM-DH30000

Melanie Seibert
You've discovered digital TV's superior picture quality, and now you want to capture those digital broadcasts in all their high-res glory. No problem! JVC's HM-DH30000 connects to a compatible HDTV tuner (such as Samsung's SIR-T165) via an i.LINK™ (IEEE 1394) connection, and uses high-capacity D-VHS tapes to record HDTV broadcasts at full resolution. This innovative VCR also upconverts or downconverts HDTV recordings on playback to match the television's display rate — even when connected to a regular analog TV! Note: Many HDTV tuners and TVs with an i.LINK jack cannot output an HDTV signal. Check compatibility before ordering.

Digital VHS currently offers the highest resolution recording and playback of any consumer video format, delivering a level of clarity and detail that surpasses even DVD! A single DF-420 D-VHS tape can hold up to 3.5 hours of material recorded at a display rate of 1080i, including a 5.1-channel Dolby® Digital soundtrack.

But not only does the HM-DH30000 record digital signals; it can also record analog signals in Super VHS's impressive 400-line resolution. S-VHS ET capability gives you S-VHS-quality recording and playback using high-quality standard VHS tapes. And for playing back VHS and S-VHS recordings, this deck makes use of JVC's most advanced DigiPure circuitry, with time base correction to remove jitter from the video signal and a digital comb filter to fight dot crawl. This circuitry delivers crisp image edges and clear color separation without bleeding.

Need a convenient way to archive your Mini DV footage? The HM-DH30000's second i.LINK input and advanced MPEG2 codec let you make gorgeous D-VHS copies of your Mini DV movies. And home video enthusiasts will love JVC's Video Navigation System — it enables the VCR to store the titles, dates, and tape locations of approximately 2,000 individual programs! The system assigns a number to each of your cassettes, which you mark on the tapes themselves. Then, when you want to find a particular show, just browse through the program memory menu. Once you've found the show, the VCR prompts you which tape to insert. It even remembers where on the tape the program begins, fast-forwards or rewinds to that point, and begins play!

Consumer Alert: This component has only an analog broadcast tuner and will require a converter box after February 17, 2009, to receive over-the-air broadcasts with an antenna because of the Nation's transition to digital broadcasting. Analog-only TVs should continue to work as before with cable and satellite TV services, gaming consoles, VCRs, DVD players, and similar products. Overview

Overview: This is a (D-VHS) High Definition Digital VHS/S-VHS VCR. Cassettes marked "D-VHS", "S-VHS" and "VHS" can be used with this machine. However, D-VHS recordings are possible only with cassettes marked "D-VHS". D-VHS is a digital memory system that uses D-VHS tapes. D-VHS was developed as a memory system for multimedia applications that require storage for large volumes of information such as digital video.

Standard Features

Plug & Play: Without turning the VCR on, it will automatically set the clock and automatically tune in all receivable channels in your area. You can also, of course, manually add or delete channels and set the clock.

Cable Box/DBS Control: You can timer record TV shows and control channel changing on compatible cable boxes and DBS receivers. You can even change the channels on the cable box when the VCR is turned off. To use the cable box control, you need to connect the JVC Cable Eye.

Auto Daylight Saving Time: This feature automatically adjusts for daylight saving time. This feature can be turned on or off.

Front Panel Input: There are both analog (RCA audio, RCA video & S-video) and digital (4 pin IEEE 1394) inputs on the front panel.

VCR Plus+ and Express Timer Programming: The VCR Plus+ feature allows you to set most items of a timer recording by simply entering a special code number (PlusCode programming number) found in TV Guide and selected newspaper TV listings. The Express Timer Programming feature allows you to directly program the VCR's timer to record events. You can also record programs on a weekly or daily basis by using Express Timer Programming. Up to a year in advance, a total of 8 events can be programmed to be recorded using the VCR Plus+ and Express Timer Programming features. Note: The specifications section of the manual incorrectly states 24 events can be programmed.

Instant Timer Recording (ITR): You can record in 30-minute increments using ITR. After the specified recording time, the power to the unit will turn off.

Jog/Shuttle Controls: This model has a Jog/Shuttle dial on the remote control.

Two VCR Control: The remote can be set to control two JVC VCRs (A or B).

Super VHS Features

Super VHS ET: This VCR can be used with S-VHS tapes to record either S-VHS or regular VHS, or you can record regular VHS or S-VHS on regular VHS tapes. Note that this is not quasi S-VHS, it is true S-VHS with 400-line resolution. Note that tapes recorded on S-VHS ET may not play back on some Non-S-VHS ET machines and, like any S-VHS recording, will not play back on a standard VHS deck unless it has quasi-S-VHS playback.

Digital R3 picture System: This feature applies edge correction to the luminance signal to enhance picture detail. This gives you clear color separation with no color bleeding, sharp image edges and recovery of color in small areas.

Picture Control: Allows you to adjust the playback picture quality. You can select:

  • Auto: automatically adjusts the picture as noted above
  • Edit: used when dubbing tapes
  • Soft: softens the picture when viewing a worn tape
  • Sharp: sharpens the picture

Active Video Calibration: This feature automatically calibrates the tape quality and video head condition for best recording and playback quality.

Auto SP-EP Timer: When selected, the speed on timer recordings automatically switches from SP to EP mode if there is not enough time left on the tape.

Pro-cision 19 micron Heads: The Pro-cision 19 micron heads improve EP performance.

Video Stabilizer: This feature corrects vertical vibration when playing back unstable EP recordings made on another VCR.

Repeat Play: You can play a video tape up to 100 times. While the tape is playing, hold down the play button for 5 seconds. The play indicator on the display will begin to flash. To stop this feature, press the stop button.

Digital VHS Features

i.LINK Connections: i.LINK is a digital serial interface that allows devices so equipped to exchange digital video signals, digital audio signals and device control signals bi-directionally over a single cable. This VCR uses four-pin i.LINK connectors to input and output MPEG2 video signals, audio signals, and control signals. The i.LINK connector is also used as an input for DV compressed signals from the DV output of a digital video camera; although this unit will accept DV signals from DV and Mini DV camcorders, it cannot output signals in the DV format.

Component Video Output: This VCR outputs a component video signal (Y-PB/CB-PR/CR) for connection to a Digital (HD) television.

Optical Digital Output: This is a Toslink connector that can output bitstream data (for Dolby Digital) or PCM Audio.

Remote Control

LP20465-013 Remote: The remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other A/V components, including TVs, cable boxes, and DBS receivers. The Jog Dial and Shuttle Ring give you fingertip control of frame advance, slow motion, multiple-speed search and Index Search.

Inputs and Outputs

Front Panel:

  • F1 Input: stereo RCA jacks, RCA composite video jack, S-video jack
