Wow — progressive-scan video from a brand you trust, for under $100! If you already own an HDTV or HDTV-ready TV, select progressive-scan output on this player and start enjoying a smoother, more filmlike look on your DVDs. Or choose interlaced-scan video for a great picture with your regular TV, until you're ready to upgrade.

This well-connected model has the component video jacks that progressive-scan signals require, and it also has composite and S-video jacks so you can choose the connection that works best with your TV. Both optical and coaxial digital outputs are provided to connect to a Dolby® Digital/DTS® receiver. The included remote control makes DVD playback a breeze.

This model also offers extraordinary disc-playing versatility, whether you're talking about CDs or DVDs. It can play your audio CD-Rs and CD-RWs, and ultra-long-playing MP3-encoded CD-Rs and CD-RWs. And it's compatible with the most popular recordable DVD formats (but not DVD-RAM). Nice work, JVC!

Features

Digital Direct Progressive Scan: Progressive-scan video has less flicker and fewer motion artifacts than the traditional interlaced-scanning method, resulting in a superior picture. To take advantage of this feature, you must have a television which supports the progressive scanning mode. The unit has a 3-way Video Signal selector on the rear panel for the component video output. You can select Progressive Scanning (480p), Interlaced Scanning (480i), or Remote (for selecting scanning mode with the remote control). Note: The Video Signal Selector changes must be made with the power off.

Express Play Start: Once the disc is inserted and the play button is pressed, this unit quickly displays the first scene of the movie (or menu). A single-layer DVD should begin play in under 4 seconds.

Video D/A Converter: This player uses a 54MHz/10-bit video Digital to Analog Converter. This high-bit, high sampling D/A converter helps to reduce digital artifacts to give you a better picture.

Audio D/A converter: This unit has a 192kHz/24-bit audio Digital to Analog converter. Note: When the unit is playing a DVD recorded with a sampling rate of 96kHz or higher, the signal is down-sampled and output through the Digital Out jacks as a 48kHz/16-bit signal.

MP3 Playback: This unit will play MP3 audio recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 format. Although the front panel display will not show file names, the file names can be shown using the on-screen display.  During MP3 playback, rapid forward/reverse playback is not available, and tracks cannot be played back in random or programmed order. The unit will not display ID3 tags on the front panel or the on-screen display. This unit will recognize up to 99 Groups and up to 150 Tracks per Group. Note: No compatible bit rate information is available from the manual, however, it recommends that discs be recorded using the 128 kbps bit rate.

JPEG Disc Playback: This unit will play back JPEG files recorded onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc using the ISO 9660 format. This unit will recognize up to 150 files per group, and up to 99 groups per disc. It is recommended that the material be recorded at a 640 x 480 pixel resolution. Available functions during JPEG disc play include Zoom (1.8x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x and 64x), Slide Show playback, and Repeat (Group and All). Note: The unit has a Picture Preference setting, allowing you to choose between MP3 and JPEG files. If a disc with both MP3 and JPEG files is inserted, only the files of the type selected in the Picture Preference setting will be played.

3D Phonic Surround Sound: When playing a Dolby Pro Logic or Dolby Digital disc, this feature allows you to obtain a surround sound effect from only two speakers. You may select one of the following modes: Action, Drama, or Theater. The amount of the effect can be varied from 1-5. Note: This feature only affects the analog audio outputs.

Zoom: The Zoom feature allows you to get an increasingly close-up view of the image. Each press of the Zoom button doubles the magnification for a total zoom of up to 64 times. You can also move the zoomed image around the screen.

Resume Play Modes: This unit features three Resume Play modes: Resume, Disc Resume, and Off. The Resume feature allows you to resume playback of a disc from the point where you last stopped. The stopping point is saved even if the power is turned off, but is lost if the disc tray is opened. When Disc Resume is activated, the interrupted position is saved even when the tray is opened or the unit is turned off. The unit memorizes the interrupted positions for up to 30 discs.

Quick Playback: The Quick Playback mode allows you to search for a particular scene at 1.5x normal speed with audio and subtitles (when engaged). The digital out jacks output a stereo linear PCM signal, except the audio from a DTS-encoded signal is not output.

Display Dimmer: You can select one of three display brightness levels.

Parental Lock Function: You can select a parental control rating from 0-8, which is protected by a 4-digit password.

Screen Saver: You can protect against TV screen burn-in by a static image (such as an on-screen display or menu) by activating the screensaver. After approximately 5 minutes of display with no activity the screen automatically darkens. Pressing any button will release the screen saver function.

Auto Standby: When the unit is stopped for more than 30 minutes or 60 minutes (selectable), the unit automatically enters the standby mode.

Video Fine Processor (VFP): The VFP function allows you to adjust the picture character according to the type of programming, picture tone, or personal preferences. There are 4 settings:

  • Normal: for watching TV in a room with normal lighting
  • Cinema: for watching a movie in a room with suppressed lighting
  • User 1/User 2: you can adjust parameters that affect the picture character, and store the settings as a user preset. The parameters include:
    • Gamma: if the neutral color is bright or dark (range: -4 to +4)
    • Brightness: if the overall picture is bright or dark (range: -16 to +16)
    • Contrast: if the far and near position is unnatural (range: -16 to +16)
    • Saturation: if the picture is whitish or blackish (range: -16 to +16)
    • Tint: if the flesh tones are unnatural (range: -16 to +16)
    • Sharpness: if the picture is indistinct (range: 0 to +3)
    • Y Delay: if the picture looks separated or overlapped (range: -2 to +2)

AV Compu-Link: JVC's AV Compu-Link system simplifies operation of connected JVC-brand audio and video equipment. When this unit is properly connected to a JVC television and/or a JVC audio/video receiver, simply pressing play on the DVD will automatically turn on and make all necessary settings on the TV and receiver for playback. The unit has two mini-jack inputs for connecting optional Compu-Link cables (part #10624160). Depending upon the receiver and TV inputs used to connect this unit, you will need to set the proper AV Compu-Link mode in the menu (DVD1, DVD2 or DVD3).
