Features
Overview: The Canon PowerShot V1 is a compact point-and-shoot camera that is designed specifically for vlogging and live streaming. It features significant feature upgrades over its predecessor (PowerShot V10), including a wide angle zoom lens, a 1.4-type image sensor, a larger touch-screen monitor that swings out horizontally for self-portraits, a built-in cooling fan, and a removable, rechargeable battery.
Image Sensor: The PowerShot V1 is equipped with a 1.4-type (18.4 x 12.3mm) Dual-Pixel CMOS image sensor with 23.9 total megapixels. It has approximately 22.3MP for still photo shooting and 18.7MP for movie recording. It uses the DIGIC X processor for sharp, high quality images.
Lens: The camera features an 8.2-25.6mm zoom lens, which is equivalent to approximately 16-50mm in 35mm still photo photography and 17-52mm for movie recording. Its focusing range is 0.16 feet (1.92") to infinity at wide angle and 0.49 feet (5.88") to infinity at telephoto. Maximum aperture is f/2.8 (W) to f/4.5 (T), and the minimum aperture is f/11 (W-T). The angle of view is 107°-46.8° for still photo shooting and 104.4°-44.9° for movie recording. Lens configuration is 9 elements in 8 groups with 3 aspherical elements.
Digital Zoom: A digital zoom of up to 10x can be applied when recording movies at 30fps or 24fps.
LCD Screen: The 3" LCD capacitive-touch screen has an aspect ratio of 3:2, with approximately 1,040,000 dots. The panel can be flipped outward approximately 175° and rotated up to 180° backward or 90° forward so you can frame self-portraits and self-videos or low- and high-angle shots. It has a 170° angle of view vertically and horizontally. When the screen is rotated toward the subject, a mirror image is displayed automatically.
Cooling Fan: The camera is equipped with a built-in cooling fan to exhaust excess heat, keeping the inside of the camera cool. You can set the fan to Auto, letting it activate when internal temperatures exceed a preset temperature. The rotation speed increases when the internal temperature rises and decreases as the temperature falls. You can also set the fan to run constantly at High, Medium, or Low Speed. To prevent the sound of the fan being picked up by the microphone, you can manually turn the fan off.
Microphones: The PowerShot V1 features a high-quality stereo microphone on the top for excellent audio pickup. You can choose between auto or manual recording levels. The included "furry" windscreen attaches to the hot shoe to reduce distortion caused by windy conditions. The camera includes a 3.5mm stereo mini jack for plugging in an optional external microphone (plug-in power supported), such as the DM-E100 found in the Canon Creator Accessory Kit (sold separately).
Multi-Function Shoe: The camera's Multi-Function Shoe (hot shoe) supplies power to compatible accessories, such as microphones and flash units, and offers communication between the camera and the attached accessories. When not in use, the provided hot shoe cover should be attached to prevent dirt and debris from blocking the contacts.
Recording Media: The PowerShot V1 record still images and videos onto SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards, regardless of their capacity. The camera is compatible with UHS-I and UHS-II cards. New cards, or cards previously formatted by another device should be formatted in the camera.
Still Images: The camera shoots still images in JPEG, HEIF, RAW, C-RAW, and Dual Pixel RAW recording formats. There are four image sizes and four aspect ratios to choose from, plus a 1.4x crop. RAW and C-RAW images are generated in 3:2 aspect ratio only. You can also choose from Fine or Normal image quality in all but S2 size images. The available still image sizes are as follows:
Image Size | 3:2 | 1.4x crop | 1:1 | 4:3 | 16.9 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Recording Modes: The top-mounted Mode Dial lets you select the shooting mode you desire. The Mode Dial is divided into two zones: Basic Zone and Creative Zone:
- Basic Zone:
- A+: Fully Automatic Shooting (Scene Intelligent Auto): The camera detects the type of scene and sets all of the appropriate settings for best results.
- SCN: Special Scene Mode: The Special Scene mode lets you select the shooting mode that is most appropriate for the subject and scene. Movie special scenes include Smooth Skin, Close-up movies, and Movie IS mode for movies with reduced camera shake. Still image special scenes include: Self-portrait, Portrait, Smooth Skin, Panoramic Shot, Food, Handheld Night Scene, HDR Backlight Control, and Fireworks.
- Creative Filters Mode:
- P: Program AE: The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value to suit the subject's brightness.
- Tv: Shutter-Priority AE: You set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value. A faster shutter speed freezes the action while a slower shutter speed can create a blurred effect.
- Av: Aperture-Priority AE: You set the desired aperture value you the camera automatically sets the shutter speed. A low aperture value offers a narrow depth of field and a blurred background, while a high aperture number provides a wide depth of field with sharp focus on the background and foreground.
- M: Manual Exposure: The manual exposure setting lets you choose both the shutter speed and aperture value, giving you more control over the exposure.
- Long (Bulb) Exposures: The shutter stays open as long as you hold down the shutter button completely, and closes when you let go. Good for night scenes, fireworks, and astrophotography.
- Custom Shooting Modes (C1-C3): You can register current camera settings as Custom Shooting Modes and assign them to C1, C2, or C3 positions on the Mode Dial for later recall.
Image Stabilization (IS): The PowerShot V1 offers optical and digital image stabilization to reduce camera shake during movie recording and still photo shooting:
- Movie IS: For movies, the image stabilization is digital. The image is slightly magnified (about 10%) for better stabilization. Enhanced Digital IS can compensate for stronger camera shake than the standard IS. Subject Tracking IS can help stabilize the subject's position on the screen while correcting camera shake. Tapping the subject on the screen will "lock" the subject to that position on the screen. You can also keep the subject near the center of the screen using the Screen Center mode.
- Still Photo IS: Image stabilization for still photos is performed optically through the lens. You can select "Always On" for constant image stabilization, or "Only For Shot" to stabilize the image only at the moment of shooting. Optical IS has a correcting effect that is equivalent to approximately 5 stops at the center of the image.
Drive Mode and Continuous Shooting: The camera has a dual-operation shutter that can function mechanically or electronically. The shutter speed range for the mechanical shutter is 1/2000 to 30 seconds (in 1/3-stop increments). The electronic shutter speed range is 1/16000 to 30 seconds. The camera's selectable Drive Modes are:
- Single Shooting: available for mechanical and electronic shutter
- Continuous Shooting:
- High-Speed +: 15 shots/sec (mechanical); 30 shots/sec (electronic)
- High-Speed: 8.2 shots/sec (mechanical); 16 shots/sec (electronic)
- Low-Speed: 3 shots/sec (mechanical); 5 shots/sec (electronic)
- Self-Timer: 10 seconds, 2 seconds, Continuous (2-10 shots after 10 second delay)
Wireless Features: The PowerShot V1 is compatible with Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 b/g/n, 2.4 GHz) with maximum link speed of 72 Mbps. It is also compatible with Bluetooth Version 4.2 wireless communication for streaming or other functions. The Canon Camera Connect app (iOS 15.0 or later, Android version varies with device) allows you to shoot remotely from your smartphone, and save images to your smartphone. You can also remotely change the camera settings. Location information from the paired smartphone can be added to images on the camera.
Live Streaming: You can stream video captured by the camera through the Camera Connect app to YouTube Live or Facebook Live or other compatible streaming service. You must be connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth or connected to an access point via Wi-Fi in order to stream from the camera. The camera also has UVC (USB Video Class) support so it works with any device that supports the UVC standard and can act as a web camera without having to download an additional driver.
Battery Information: The PowerShot V1 comes with the Canon LP-E17 Lithium-ion rechargeable battery (7.2V 1040mAh 7.5Wh). The battery charges in the camera when connected to a USB power source through a USB-C cable (not included). It can also charge in the Canon LC-E17 battery charger (sold separately). Charging time is approximately 2 hours at room temperature. With a fully-charged battery, the camera has the following estimated battery life:
- Recording:
- Still Images: 400 shots (power save mode); 340 shots (smooth mode)
- 4K Video: 1 hour 10 minutes
- Full HD Video: 1 hour 20 minutes
- Video Playback: 3 hours
HDMI: The camera has an HDMI Micro output (Type D) terminal for connecting it to a TV or an external recording device with an HDMI cable. The HDMI Output resolution can be set in the menu to Auto or 1080p. In Auto, the images will automatically display at the optimum resolution for the connected TV. HDMI CEC is not supported with the PowerShot V1.
White Balance: You can choose from the following white balance settings: Auto (Ambiance Priority), Auto (White Priority), Daylight, Shade, Cloudy/Twilight/Sunset, Tungsten Light, White Fluorescent Light, Flash, Custom, and Color Temperature (2500-10000).
ISO Speed: The ISO Speed can be set automatically or manually for still photos between ISO 100-32000 in 1/3-stop or 1-stop increments. Expanded ISO speeds equivalent to ISO 51200 are possible. For movie shooting, you can set the ISO speed manually or automatically between ISO 100 and 12800 (1/3-stop or 1-stop increments). Expanded speeds to ISO 100 and ISO 25600 are also available.
