About the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM

A value-packed, multi-talented lens
A value-packed, multi-talented lens
This 85mm lens packs a number of features that I look for into a compact, lightweight design. It has a fast f/2 aperture, image stabilization, and macro capability — a potent combo for photography hobbyists and enthusiasts alike.

Built-in image stabilization helps you get crisp, blur-free shots in low-light environments.
Take fantastic portraits
The 85mm focal length is my preferred choice for taking portraits. It lets me get close enough to my subject so that we can communicate naturally, but lets me stay far enough back so that they don't get camera shy.
This lens is a fantastic choice for capturing crisp, in-focus subjects with beautiful blurred backgrounds in senior photos, headshots, and candids.
Capture up-close details
This versatile lens lets you capture action from a distance. But it also lets you get ultra-close to your subject — about 14 inches away.
Use it to take detailed shots of the bride and groom's wedding rings. Or look for interesting, intimate perspectives of everyday objects like water droplets on fruit, an ice cube melting in the sun, or your pet's soulful eyes.

Product Research
Features
Overview: The Canon RF 85mm f/2 MACRO IS STM is a medium telephoto lens designed for Canon RF-mount full-frame and APS-C cameras. On cameras with an APS-C image sensor, the lens provides a 136mm equivalent focal length range. The lens is ideal for portraits and street photography, as well as low light photography. With macro capability, you can capture extreme closeups with excellent results. It is compatible with Canon EOS R series mirrorless cameras.
Lens Construction: The lens is constructed of 12 lens elements in 11 groups.
Macro Photography: The RF 85mm f/2 MACRO IS STM is designed for extreme closeup photography with a minimum focusing distance of 1.15 feet (13.68"). With its maximum magnification of 0.5x, you can capture close-up half life-size macro photographs.
Image Stabilization: The lens works in conjunction with EOS R-series cameras, sharing data between the lens and the camera to greatly reduce blur caused by camera shake. When Optical Image Stabilization is engaged, you can enjoy up to 5 stops of stabilization. During Macro shooting, the Hybrid Optical Image Stabilization compensates for both angular and shift-type camers shake, giving you up to 3 stops of stabilization.
12-pin Communication: The Canon RF-series lenses feature a 12-pin communication system between the camera and the lens (compared to 8 pins for the EF-series). This 12-pin system is the fastest available for a Canon lens and camera combination, and provides faster AF, Digital Lens Optimizer, and more. In addition, the EOS R camera can display lens information directly to the viewfinder, making it easy to confirm the lens' focal length without looking away from your subject.
Controls: The RF 85mm f/2 MACRO IS STM has a 2-way Focus Mode switch that lets you select AF (autofocus) or MF (manual focus). The Image Stabilizer Switch lets you turn the Image Stabilizer on or off. The 3-way Focusing Distance Range selector switch helps prevent the lens from focusing on unintentional subjects at the following distances:
- 1.14' to infinity (Full)
- 1.64' to infinity
- 1.14' to 1.64'
Control Ring: The RF-series lenses feature a control ring on the lens barrel, which can be assigned to functions that are commonly used on the camera. These functions include shutter speed and aperture settings, or exposure compensation. The ring has a clicking mechanism (with 54 clicks per revolution) that acts as a confirmation that the settings are being changed.
Note: The clicking sound could possibly be picked up by the microphone while shooting movies. If you desire a silent control ring, the clicking mechanism can be removed by a Canon service provider (for a fee).
Focusing Ring: Regardless of whether the lens is set to manual or auto focus mode, the focusing ring always works. This means you can auto focus on a subject, but manually fine-tune the focus by turning the focusing ring.
9-Blade Circular Aperture: The lens has a 9-blade circular aperture. Combined with the f/2 maximum aperture's narrow depth-of-field, you can experience beautiful bokeh (out-of-focus areas) and soft backgrounds which makes your subject stand out even more.
Stepping Motor (STM): The RF 85mm f/2 MACRO IS STM is equipped with a ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM) to drive the fast autofocus system.
Optional Filters: The RF 85mm lens has a 67mm mounting thread on the front of lens for attaching screw-on type filters.
Optional Accessories: The lens is compatible with the ET-77 bayonet-type lens hood which cuts out unwanted light and protects the front of the lens from rain, snow, and dust. When not in use, you can reverse-mount the lens hood for storage. In addition, Canon offers an optional soft lens case (LP1216), which protects the lens when it's not in use.
