About the Devialet Gemini

Wire-free headphones with striking looks and strong bass

The water-resistant Devialet Gemini earbuds are 100% wire-free, feature active noise cancellation, and serve up clear, powerful sound.
Wire-free headphones with striking looks and strong bass
Devialet knows how to make a first impression. Just like the French audio company's Phantom wireless speakers, their Gemini earbuds first grabbed my attention with their head-turning looks. Then it was their deep, head-nodding bass — the best bass I've ever heard from a pair of true wireless earbuds.
But, it was my rewarding repeat-listens that really made the Gemini earbuds truly memorable. The more I Iistened, the more musical detail the 10mm high-excursion dynamic drivers revealed. That hard-hitting bass helped punctuate the textured, well-rounded overall sound. Devialet also offers adjustable noise cancellation and some convenient features to boot.
Up-to-date Bluetooth for wireless freedom
Music plays wirelessly via Bluetooth 5.0, a newer, stronger version of the popular wireless technology. I noticed the wireless range didn't extend as far as some other true wireless earbuds, but I could keep my phone at my work desk and move around my basement. I could also use both earbuds together, or pop one in — for, say, a podcast — while the other stayed in the charging case.

The included charging case banks up to 18 hours of power to recharge the earbuds.
Solid battery life and snazzy charging case
Devialet has one of the better-designed charging cases I've seen — it's smooth to the touch and feels pleasant in-hand. It slides open and snaps shut with a quick, joystick flick of the thumb. The earbuds have about six hours of battery life with noise cancellation, and the case banks enough power to recharge them about three times.
Strong noise cancellation for earbuds
Noise cancellation is activated by pressing and holding either earbud. At the highest level, the noise cancellation is above average for in-ear headphones. With music or podcasts playing, I couldn't hear the loud rat-tat-tat of my oil furnace firing up.
Press and hold the earbud again to activate "transparency" mode, which uses the built-in mics to pick ambient sound and voices. You can further dial in the level of noise cancellation or the amount of external sounds you hear with the Devialet Gemini mobile app. It's a free download for Apple® and Android™ phones. And while I don't always recommend headphone apps, this one is worthwhile.
Better fit — with a twist
In-ear headphones are only as good as their fit. A secure seal is crucial for comfort, noise cancellation, and sound. So Devialet includes four sizes of silicone ear tips for finding the right fit. These earbuds slipped right into place with a slight twist and remained stable when I moved my head. When I got a good seal on both sides, I heard proper imaging and even punchier bass.
My impressions — clean, clear sound
The Gemini app also has one of the better "audio preferences" sections I've used, too. You can customize the sound with the built-in equalizer, or choose from six built-in sound profiles. For music, I found that the default "Flat" EQ was the way to go — but I'll admit I was fascinated by the "Bass" EQ. I put on a playlist of grimy, funky instrumentals from the hip-hop group Griselda, and couldn't believe that earbuds this small are capable of delivering that much bass!
Still, the Gemini's serve up plenty of low-end knock in the default setting. And heaps of high-end detail, too — they sounded clearly defined, but never felt harsh or rolled off. On a live recording of Bill Evan's "Mother of Earl," these earbuds handled the stark juxtaposition between the stand-up bass and higher-range keys with grace and ease. Actually better than some high-end over-ear headphones with super-sized drivers.
The soundstage is pretty intimate, not exactly between the ears, but more right in front of the face. But the detail is rich, with clear separation between the different instruments and vocals. As for the mids? A fun, full-of-life presentation that brought a tactile energy to all types of musical genres.
Vocals sounded realistic, nuanced, and full — from Bill Withers to Minnie Ripperton, and every voice in between. Margo Price's twangy, soulful crooning on "Hands of Time" sounded as earnest and lovely as ever. And the bite of the percussion elevated the urgency of the song.
In fact, I noticed a similar presentation of the percussion on several tracks I played. These are not the earbuds for passive, background listening — when I pressed play, I was paying attention!

Features
Overview: The Devialet Gemini (TX101) True Wireless earbuds are designed in France to deliver outstanding sound quality, elegant style, and true comfort. Gemini is ergonomically shaped to fit every type of ear, with four sizes of ear tips to choose from. The earbuds recharge in the supplied charging case, so you're ready for the next song or phone call. Gemini also features on-board controls, active noise cancellation, and transparency mode, and are covered by a 2-year manufacturer's warranty.
Drivers: Each earbud features a 10mm custom high-excursion full-range driver to deliver outstanding sound quality.
Ear Tips: Four sizes of ear tips are included (X Small, Small, Medium, Large) to help you find a comfortable fit. Finding a size that prevents acoustic leakage will provide the best listening experience. A quick Fit Test in the Devialet Gemini app will help you find the best size of ear tip.
Pressure Balance Architecture (PBA): Gemini's use of cascading decompression chambers helps to provide the ideal pressure in the inner ear. Each chamber is coated with an acoustic mesh to help provide an optimum seal to prevent external noise from entering. This passive acoustic block makes the Active Noise Cancellation even more effective to give you a more intimate listening experience without annoying external distractions.
Bluetooth 5.0: Gemini is equipped with Bluetooth Version 5.0 to give you reliable wireless performance for music listening and phone calls from your smart device. With Qualcomm's aptX codec, you can enjoy your music from your aptX-enabled devices in high fidelity.
Devialet Gemini App: Control of your true wireless earbuds is greatly enhanced by the Devialet Gemini App. When you first pair your earbuds to the app, you can check the battery charge in each earbud, and conduct a fit test to determine which ear tips best suit your ears. The app lets you customize the earbuds to your preferences, with three levels of Active Noise Cancellation, two levels of Transparency Mode and a Neutral mode. Audio preferences include a 6-band EQ with 6 presets, and full balance control. With Smart Pause activated in the app, the music will pause when you remove one earbud, and resume when it's replaced. To keep Gemini working at top level, firmware updates can be downloaded when available. The Devialet Gemini app is available from the App Store for iOS devices running version 12.1 or later, and from Google Play for devices running Android version 6.0 and up.
Ear Active Matching (EAM): The earbuds use a proprietary Ear Active Matching (EAM) algorithm to automatically tune the music to the shape of the user's ear canal. The algorithm adjusts the music signal to the ear up to 10,000 times per second to provide a personal listening experience, and the best sound quality possible for that listener.
Active Noise Cancellation: The Gemini earbuds feature Devialet's patented Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Microphones on each earbud pick up ambient noise, which is mixed with an opposite-but-equal signal to cancel out the noise. Using Internal Delay Compensation, Active Noise Cancellation is significantly enhanced, especially for higher frequencies. You can choose from three levels of ANC: Low, High, and Plane. An adapted level of noise cancellation is applied whenever you answer a phone call to help you hear your caller clearly.
Transparency Mode: In addition to Active Noise Cancellation, Gemini has a two-level Transparency Mode. Similar to ANC, Transparency Mode lets you stay aware of your surroundings by picking up ambient noise and mixing it in with your music or phone call. There are two levels of Transparency: Low and High. If you choose not to use ANC or Transparency Modes, you can select a Neutral Mode in the Gemini app.
Onboard Controls: The Devialet Gemini earbuds have a touch-sensitive area for controlling your music or phone calls. A single press will pause/play your music. A press-and-hold action lets you switch between ANC and Transparency Modes. A double-press lets you activate your phone's Voice Assistant (Siri, Google Assistant). When receiving a phone call, you can answer with a double-press, or reject with a press-and-hold. A double-press also hangs up your call. You can configure the controls in the Devialet Gemini app if you want to change the default controls.
Equalizer: In the app's Audio Preference section, you can adjust the sound of your Gemini earbuds using the built-in equalizer. The EQ features six bands (50Hz, 125Hz, 400Hz, 1.25kHz, 4kHz, and 8kHz) and you can adjust the bands +/- 6dB in 0.5dB increments. There are also six preset EQ curves: News/Podcast, Bass, Treble, Dynamic, Low-Mid, and Flat. In addition to the EQ, you can adjust the balance between the left and right earbuds from 0% to 100%.
Dust and Water Resistance: The earbuds offer IPX4-certified protection from dust and water splashes to keep them going in adverse conditions.
Batteries: The Devialet Gemini have rechargeable batteries in each earbud and the charging case. The earbuds charge inside of the charging case. The charging case can be charged wirelessly on a Qi-certified wireless charging pad, or using the included USB-C cable. Fully charged earbuds provide up to 6 hours of music playback, or 4 hours of voice-call activity. The charging case stores enough power for three additional charges (18 hours) for a total of 24 hours of listening on a single charge. Fully-exhausted earbuds recharge in the case in approximately 1.5 hours.
Devialet Care: The earbuds come with a 2-year manufacturer's warranty. Optional Devialet Care, available from the manufacturer for an additional charge, extends the coverage for up to three years. It also covers one accidental incident to keep your earbuds in top working order.
