Features

Stereo Integrated Amplifier: The Leak Stereo 230 is a high performance, high-fidelity 2-channel integrated amplifier designed to be the perfect match to a wide variety of both analog, digital, and wireless audio sources. It is rated at 75 watts (RMS) x 2 channels into 8-ohms, or 115 watts (RMS) x 2 channels into 4-ohms.

High-Performance DAC: Enjoy ultra-low noise and high dynamic range from your digital audio files with the included acclaimed ES9038Q2M Reference chip and ESS Technology's 32-bit HyperStream architecture with Time Domain Jitter Eliminator. The sampling rate goes up to a breathtaking 768kHz (PCM) and DSD512 (22.4MHz)

Dedicated Headphone Amplifier Circuit: The LEAK STEREO 230 uses a dedicated amplifier circuit with current-feedback technology for the headphones output. Equal in performance to some standalone headphone amplifiers, the design offers high-speed output signal transition thanks to a high slew rate. The result is a dynamic, detailed and engaging performance with all manner of headphone types. The unit is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connection of your headphones. The headphone output can be adjusted up to 4.5V for connection of a variety of headphones. Connecting headphones will mute the audio signal to your connected loudspeakers.

Audio Controls: The Leak Stereo 230 offers independent Bass & Treble control that can be adjusted from -6 to +6dB. There is also a Balance control that allows you to adjust the sound output balance of the left and right speakers. In addition, there is a Direct mode which bypasses the integrated amp's Tone controls to reduce noise and electronic interference in order to reproduce the purest sound possible.

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: The Leak Stereo 230 integrated amplifier offers built-in Bluetooth 5.0 with support for wireless audio streaming (A2DP) and control (AVRCP). You'll be able to wirelessly stream stored music, music apps, and other audio content from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, desktop computer, and laptop to the integrated amp. You'll also be able to control Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track functions from the included IR remote. In addition to supporting Bluetooth's standard SBC codec and Apple's AAC codec, the Leak Stereo 230 is compatible with Qualcomm's aptX codec for "CD-quality" (16-bit/44.1kHz) wireless audio streaming from aptX compatible source devices (including some Android smartphones and tablets).

Note: You can pair multiple Bluetooth source devices with the Leak Stereo 230, but only one device can be connected and used for playback at a time.

USB-B Input: The Leak Stereo 230's USB-B input allows connection to your Windows PC (Vista-up) or Mac (OS X 10.6.4-up) computer for playback of stored digital music files on your compatible laptop or desktop computer through the integrated amplifier. A Windows PC will require the installation of a USB driver. A mac computer does not require the installation of a separate USB driver. The unit supports playback of PCM (44.1kHz to 768kHz), DSD64 (2.8MHz), DSD128 (5.6MHz), DSD256 (11.2MHz), DSD512 (22.4MHz) music files. System Requirements include -

  • Windows Vista and up , or Mac OS 10.6.4 and up
  • Intel Core 2 @ 1.6GHz or similar AMD processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • USB 2.0 Interface

Note: There is also a rear-panel USB-A input that is used for service and firmware updates only. The USB-A input does not support media playback.

HDMI ARC: The Lelak Stereo 230 also boasts a newly developed HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) function for high-quality audio in AV applications. The included HDMI ARC connection makes the integrated amplifier perfect for home AV applications, bringing the LEAK Hi-Fi pedigree to your TV screen as well. The HDMI ARC jack supports 2ch PCM audio signals from 44.1kHz to 192kHz.

Note: The HDMI ARC jack does not support Dolby Digital, DTS, or any other multichannel surround format.

Digital Inputs & Outputs: The Leak Stereo 230 is equipped with two optical (toslink) digital inputs and one coaxial (RCA) digital input that support 2ch PCM digital audio signals from 44.1kHz to 192kHz. It also features an optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital output to connect to a higher quality external DAC.

Note: The digital inputs and outputs do not support Dolby Digital, DTS, or any other multichannel surround format.

Line-Level Inputs & Outputs: The Leak Stereo 230 integrated amplifier features two analog line-level stereo RCA inputs. It is also outfitted with a stereo RCA pre-out that allows you to use the Stereo 230 as a preamplifier and connect it to a separate power amplifier.

MM Phono Input: The Leak Stereo 230's has a built-in Moving Magnet (MM) phono pre-amplifier which allows for direct connection to a turntable record player so you can enjoy your classic vinyl collection. Experience exceptional sound quality with the included high-quality, low-noise turntable input optimized for moving magnet (MM) cartridges. The JFET-based circuit offers precise RIAA equalization, meeting industry standards for the best vinyl record playback. A ground terminal is offered to reduce any hum or noise.

Binding Post Speaker Output Terminals: The Leak Stereo 230 integrated amplifier is outfitted with 5-way binding post terminals for connection of a pair of 8-ohm or 4-ohm loudspeakers. These 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 12AWG), pin-connectors, spade-lugs, and banana plugs (single or dual).

Simple Control: The Leak Stereo 230 offers simple front-panel controls, plus comes with an IR remote for wireless operation of the stereo integrated amplifier. The IR remote uses two "AAA" batteries (not included).

  • Front-Panel: Front-panel controls include Power, Volume, Input, Bass, Treble, Balance, & Direct.
  • IR Remote: The IR remote provides Power, Volume, Input, Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track, and Direct. The Play/Pause and Previous/Next track functions are only supported when Bluetooth is selected as the source input.

12V Trigger: The Leak Stereo 230 features a 12V Trigger Input (3.5mm) which allows the integrated amplifier to turn on at the same time as a connected source device or amplifier with a 12V Trigger Output. There is also a 12V Trigger Link (3.5mm) that allows you to daisy-chain the 12V Trigger Input signal to another component with a 12V Trigger Input, so the system can turn on at the same time.

Auto Standby: The Leak Stereo 230 will automatically go into Standby mode if there is no audio signal or no operation for a set period of time. You can set the Auto Standby time to 20 minutes or 1 hour.

Protection Mode: The Leak Stereo 230 is protected by a thermal switch which interrupts the AC power supply if the amplifier is grossly overloaded for a period of time. It is fully protected against gross overload and short-circuit protection.

Note: The unit does not protect against high or extreme temperatures. Make sure to install the Leak Stereo 230 in a well ventilated area.

Q
Can I hook up my television to this amplifier to listen through the speakers?
gerhard  Feb 13, 2025
1 answer
A
The LEAK Stereo 230 features both an HDMI ARC connection and an optical digital input, Gerhard. Whether your TV has HDMI ARC audio features or a digital optical audio output, you'll be able to connect and enjoy TV sound through the LEAK Stereo 230 and your connected speakers.

Q
I note Leak 230 manual states depth is 414 mm (16.29 in). Your specs note depth of 17.38 in. Does your depth include allowance for connections (power, speakers, etc.)? Thanks.
jim f  Feb 08, 2025
1 answer
A
Hey James, that is correct. Our measurements are taken with the power cable, banana connectors and RCAs when we measure to ensure we get the correct maximum depth to ensure we do not cause strain on the cables for those tight spots.

Q
I have connected my MacBook(USB-C) to USB-B in the back of the unit. It will not play music from Apple on my MacBook. The turn dial is selected to USB. What am I doing wrong?
shawn  Jan 23, 2025
1 answer
A
Hey Shawn, looking at the owners manual, they listed the following: Connect to a Mac or PC via the type-B USB interface on the LEAK STEREO 230's rear panel. Rotate the INPUT selector on the front panel (or press the INPUT select key on the remote control) to select the USB input, the selected input indicator will light. Select the unit as the playback output device on the computer and then start playing music with your chosen music software program. If that does not work and you purchased the product from Crutchfield, feel free to contact our Tech Support team. They can walk you through the settings on the product and see if there may be a fix. Our toll-free Tech Support number is printed on your invoice, and is also available under the "My Orders" tab in the "My Account" section of our website. If you did not purchase the unit from Crutchfield, then you may want to contact the manufacturer.

Q
Can the Leak CDT be stacked on top of the 230 without compromising ventilation for the 230 or overheating the CDT?
lauri e  Nov 16, 2024
1 answer
A
If you plan to use the LEAK Stereo 230 and the LEAK CDT while stacked Kenny, the Stereo 230 will need proper ventilation. Since the CDT does not feature any venting on the top panel, placing the Stereo 230 on top of the CDT would be the best move for ventilation.

Q
Can I pair the leak 230 and leak CDT with powered speakers? In my case Klipsch the Nines?
alan  Oct 21, 2024
1 answer
A
Hey Alan, this is certainly possible. The Leak 230 has a pre-out on the back that we can run into your Klipsch Nines line in. This way you can run all your sources through the 230 and push the signal out into your Nines.

Q
Am I correct to assume that the RCA Pre Out is Variable via the Volume control and that I could connect that Pre Out to a Subwoofer and the volume will vary along with the main speakers connected to the 230 ?
jeffrey w  Aug 07, 2024
1 answer
A
The pre out connections can be used to send audio to a powered subwoofer that has a low pass filter to ensure that the sub only gets bass audio.

Q
Auditioned Wharfedale Lintons with the Leak 230. In a 12' x 16' room 8 ft ceilings for a nice volume listening to pop/ jazz at 80 to 85 db we had to set the volume at the 12 o'clock position. That sure seems like the 230 is underpowered. ??? That concerns me. I'm wanting the Lintons and love the sound of the 230. Plus there is a fair amount of heat off amp. I am curious about these issues. I want the Leak cdt to go with the rig. Thank you for your input.
handyman1  Aug 04, 2024
1 answer
A
Hey Dennis, thanks for the question. So normally I would advise this combo as being a great pairing for music listening in a space such as yours. The Lintons are not a power-hungry speaker, and the Leak has plenty of power to get the most out of your setup and size space. 50% on the knob is not too worrisome as you still have plenty of more drive on the amps if you need it or wanted it. The heat is very normal for a Class AB amp like that as they have a tendency to run hot for that power and sound quality they are able to produce.

Q
Does it have enough juice for KLH Mod 5's?

This integrated amp sure can run the KLH Model Five speakers!

Q
Is the walnut on the leak 230 the same as on the denton 85 speakers?
john  Apr 20, 2024
1 answer
A
Hey John, upon comparing real time photos rather than stock photos, they look to be very close but the Dentons look to have just a slight darker finish to their walnut color. They are close enough that I think most will not have an issue as they should look great together on a same piece of furniture, but if you are after a shade by shade comparison, they are off enough if you are looking for it.
red  Apr 20, 2024 (Staff)
Q
What are the 'Type 2 Wiring' posts (seen on the back)? This looks like it could be used for a 2nd pair of speakers or is that not the case? I checked the Home A/V Connections Glossary which is a nice resource but didn't see it there.
greg  Mar 30, 2024
1 answer
A
Hey Greg so those Class 2 binding posts on the back are the main connectors for a pair of passive speakers. The LEAK is designed to just push one primary pair and those posts are the only speaker binding posts on the unit.
red  Mar 30, 2024 (Staff)
Q
Is it possible to hook up two pairs of speakers to this amplifier?
tom  Jan 17, 2024
1 answer
A
Technically, it is possible to connect two sets of 8-ohm speakers to this amplifier, but it will require special consideration since there is only one set of L/R speaker terminals. Depending on whether you're using bare wire, banana connectors, or some sort of less common connector, you may need an adapter.
zachary  Jan 18, 2024 (Staff)
Q
Is there any way to separately purchase a silver-colored metal case for the 230 ( like the 130 ) to use in place of the wooden one? The thick walnut case is just too retro for me.
randy  Jan 10, 2024
1 answer
A
We do not offer any other color options or a replacement chassis for the LEAK Stereo 230 at this time, Randy. The Stereo 130 does have a preamp output for use with larger external amplifiers, so if the color choice is a deal-breaker you can always choose the 130 and add a larger component amp. I hope this helps!
bo  Jan 10, 2024 (Staff)
Q
In the specs listed on your website, the version of Bluetooth listed is 4.0; on the manufacturer's website, Bluetooth 5.0 is listed. If I were to buy a Stereo 230 from Crutchfield, which version of Bluetooth can I expect to be installed?
greg  Jan 09, 2024
1 answer
A
We checked these specifications, and the LEAK Stereo 230 does have Bluetooth 5.0, as per the LEAK information listed in the owner's manual Greg. You can expect Bluetooth 5.0, and we have updated our info listed on the website to reflect that!
bo  Jan 10, 2024 (Staff)
Q
Is there any way to connect this unit to powered speakers? I'm currently looking to upgrade my system, which is chained like this: laptop (via USB)>Aiyima tube preamp (USB)>Schiit EQ>Powered monitors (Yamaha HS8s). Was looking to upgrade (Schiit Modi Multibit>Schiit EQ>Schiit Valhalla tube preamp)...But then I stumbled across this unit, which appears to have a solid DAC and additional functionality that I'd like to have. Is there a way to make this happen?
steve  Dec 29, 2023
1 answer
A
The Leak Stereo 230 is outfitted with a stereo RCA pre-out that allows you to use the Stereo 230 as a preamplifier and connect it to a separate power amplifier, or in your case powered speakers Steve. The HS8's are a studio monitor used for balanced input (XLR or 1/4") so you'll need to add the Rolls MB15b Promatch in the link below to make the connections to your Yamaha monitors from the RCA unbalanced output on the LEAK. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_172MB15B/Rolls-MB15b-ProMatch.html
