Doesn't keep correct time 2. Sound is not alpine standards( I don't know if amp would help but other reviews say no)

Been a loyal Apline customer for over 30 years, and this is probably the worst unit I've ever owned. I've owned this unit for 2.5 years now and it's been nothing but problems. It shuts off randomly and will freeze from time to time. I'm already looking for another unit that is more reliable.

A hard "Meh".
Fred from Portland, OR on 7/30/2024
2016 Subaru Forester
I would not buy this head unit again. It sounds good and mostly works. Mostly. One major issue is that it will randomly switch inputs (e.g., from SXM to USB), so you can be suddenly blaring L7 while you were trying to listen to a quiet podcast. But mainly, the touch-screen is beyond awful. It goes unresponsive or doesn't do anything though it got an input. You have to tap it multiple times to get it to respond to a button push. Typing an address in the Nav is especially painful, you can tell you're hitting a key (it gets highlighted in the UI), but nothing happens. It's done this since day one. It's unsafe. I'm sorry I didn't send it back right away, but the installation was so epic and expensive I thought I would just live with it. Bad call. In addition, there is no available update I can find for this model, neither firmware nor map. (Maybe that's a blessing, since map updates look to be an epic process involving a Windows computer, a USB stick, and dozens of steps. Painful.) It has a bunch of other, more minor annoyances (antiquated file limitations for USB sticks, long startup time, etc.) that are not what I expect from Alpine. Very disappointing. Maybe I should just fix my long deceased Alpine 7618 h/u...
Pros: Sounds good, FM reception is good.
Cons: Unacceptably bad touch-screen. Like unsafe for driving bad.

It was a little rough getting through the wire diagram. It was not really step-by-step. There was some interpretation. I made a call to Crutchfield and the tech helped me immensely. As for the Alpine INE-W970HD, it is awesome! Takes a little getting used to after that, the navigation is stereo a back up camera CD player all work fantastic!!
Pros: Nav, HD radio, Backup camera work great
Cons: Wiring instructions interpretation.

Remember the good old days when you purchased an alpine stereo and it was awesome. Thats not the case anymore. This unit sucks. Installation was easy, i had Crutchfield pre wire it and as usual they were great. The unit itself is a huge letdown, gps notifications stopped working, it ejects music cd's whenever it wants to, the speeding voice chime goes off all the time, even when im not speeding, the tuner is terrible, the display does whatever it wants to when i turn it on. for the price i expect a lot more. It is out of warrantee now so i am stuck with a boat anchor. I do not recommend this unit at all.

Lots of problems
Clyde from Greenville, TX on 2/21/2024
2006 Toyota Camry
Very, very disappointed. Both the remote control and the manual were not in the box. Also it seems to have some internal problem that makes it think it is driving mode all the time, so I can't change most of the settings, which means I can't use many of the features. I twice watched the installer take the dash apart and do a continuity check through the harness, and the harness was OK. The only positive is that the sound is OK through the standard 2006 Camry speakers.

I purchased this unit about a year ago, what's the fluid overseas so I just recently installed it and I really like the sound that comes out of it, I have three amps one for front second one for rear and a third one for sub, at first every once in awhile the CD playback would make a noise like distortion or something but it doesn't do it anymore, for those of you who claim that the backup camera does not work, you have to go into settings and actually turn that feature on otherwise it won't work.
Pros: Reproduces music that I like,
Cons: It does not have cd changer control.

Good, but a tight fit for a 2013 Tacoma
Michael from Fair Oaks, CA on 11/6/2023
2013 Toyota Tacoma
New to installing a receiver into a vehicle. I was not mentally prepared for the number of connections that need to be made from the back of the unit to an adapter harness and then into the truck. When my SO helped out things went a little better. Also had a few helpful calls into Crutchfield support for GPS receiver placement and location of the parking brake wire.. which you absolutely have to splice into fuse box wiring.
Pros: Seems full featured. GPS is helpful and accurate. Radio is good. CD player is a nice feature for those of us who still you them occasionally. Mostly fits the interior aesthetic of the Tacoma's interior. Not as 'schwoopy' though. Still exploring functionality
Cons: There is very little extra room behind the unit for the nest of wiring that needs to be back there. I'm still wrangling one of the plastic clips to get it o stay in place. Hopefully I'll be able to get it to snap it in tighter.

Pros: Built in GPS EQ /DSP options Slow linking up to Bluetooth on start up of vehicle Fit the Dash of my 2005 Chevrolet SSR ..straight forward install I bought the prewired harness too made install faster ..?
Cons: Annoying going over speed limit warning ?? you can mute it but then you cannot hear your directions?! I agonized over this radio, because it was kind of pricey. Did I need the stand alone navigation? Was the screen big enough? Were the buttons big enough? Could I live without a volume knob. It went on and on. But, in the end, I am really happy I bought it. The screen is fine. The menus are intuitive. The buttons are very tactile and plenty large. The touch screen works very well. It is a very nice radio. The stand alone navigation means not having to worry about phone connections. Bluetooth is easy and stable. I have not tried talking on the phone yet. I have not tried a CD yet. I expect both will work well. Installation was a lot, but I also installed an amplifier and subwoofer, front and rear cameras, and the satellite radio. Installing just the head unit would have been straight forward, especially using the wiring adapters. It sounds great!

Navigator THX Disaster
Todd from SEAL BEACH, CA on 11/21/2022
2006 Lincoln Navigator
This purchasing and installation experience has been absolutely terrible. First, Crutchfield didn't have the correct information on my 2006 Lincoln Navigator with THX option in their knowledge base, but they thought they did, so everything I was told I would need basically didn't work. Nothing was plug and play and the Crutchfield provided wiring schematics were wrong, so in the end, the stereo installer had to cut the original harness, hardwire all of the speakers, bypass the amp in the car, incorporate a separate powered subwoofer I wasn't counting on, the head unit will play to the video screen in the car (I will have to replace that separately at a later time), spent hours on the phone with a Crutchfield tech to no avail, fiddle with the steering wheel controls to no avail, and I had to pay three times the installation costs I was expecting. But I guess you could say other than that, it went smoothly. Now that the head unit is almost in (I will have to take out the bezel and trim it later as the radio is behind it and doesn't quite fit into the slot), we aren't exactly thrilled with this radio. It is simply slow to do anything and I would have bought another unit if I knew the video wouldn't work. Now we are fighting an issue with the volume going up and down all the time despite all of the troubleshooting guides and instruction manuals. Frankly, if I had the choice, I would buy a stock radio off of the internet and save myself weekends of pain.

Where Is The BASS?
David from Conrad, MT on 7/7/2022
2006 Ford Mustang
This is the third navigation/radio /CD head unit I have installed on my 06 Mustang with the Kicker System this year. Ther first two were units put out by Boss, great sound with great bass response but the navigation was always about 50 yards behind, and you could not adjust the sound loud enough to be heard while driving. Crutchfield was great about replacing the first unit under warrantee, but the second unit while better, was still slow. At that point, I decided to upgrade with this Alpine. The navigation issue was resolved, it's great. But there was almost no BASS response. I made multiple calls Crutchfield Tech, they were great at trying to help me resolve this issue. We adjusted everything that can be adjusted but with little or no success. At one point I even took the Alpine out and put the Boss back in to see if maybe, the amp in the Mustang had failed, it hadn't, it worked as it had, great bass. During one of the later calls the Crutchfield one of the tech's suggested that I might try disconnecting one of the RCA cables, I had been avoiding this because it meant taking the dash apart Again! Well, this afternoon I decided to try this last possible solution. I disconnected the white RCA. There was an immediate improvement, not as good as the Boss or the factory six disk changer but something I can live with. If great bass is what you want, then this is Alpine is probably not for you. The rest of the unit is great.
Pros: Looks good, good navigation, easy to use.
Cons: Weak BASS response.

Pass this one by. For some reason, it emits a beep and displays a picture of a road sign every now and then, even if thete are no road signs present. And if there is a sign, the two do not match. It has an "e-brake" wire that needs to be hooked to something and if now will not allow you to pair your phone car on or off. I asked Crutchfield for instructions to redy tbis and they were of no help. The disply is nice, but it is a clunky radio.

The representative walked through a vew systems and I decided on Alpine W970HD. OVER ALL, it is a very good unit. Haven't yet tried the DVD.
Pros: It has an awsome sound system. Was thinking about upgrading my speakers but I didn't have to. Being able to play music off my cell or other devices is great after never having this feature on my factory unit.
Cons: I miss having a displayed clock without having to turn on the unit, but when going to a custom unit and not a factory unit you lose this feature. The system came with USB extending cables and not mounting ports which the representative did not advise me of, looked pretty stupid with two cables dangling off the unit until I purchased a mounting port. I wish there was a default setting to allow calls to ring my cell letting me decide to transfer it to the unit. Just my pref.

I bought this Alpine for my 2001 Lincoln Towncar Executive Series as an upgrade to replace the INE-w960HD I have in there right now, In order to fit, the dash had to be cut and shaved, im pretty sure more shaving and cutting might be involved to maker her fit, the 970 is bigger, I wanted the 7" screen but it costs $1400 .5 inch bigger and $500 more with no dvd/cd? Well it was sold out when i was looking so i saved $500 for being impatient and grabbed this one before they sell out again+ i bought the optional remote control also?? I haven't installed yet I'm hoping next week for this custom install

Alpine is no longer a high end car aidio anymore
Colin from Richmond, TX on 11/23/2021

I've had problems with this since day one. I believe I installed this in February and Everyday something acts up. AM/FM/HD radio reception is nonexistent even in bigger cities. And I live in one of the largest. I understand most don't use terrestrial radio anymore but I do. In fact I knew Apline AM band is awful so having HD radio was a must. It's just a wasted feature and I'm not sure why Alpine even bothered adding terrestrial radio to the unit. According to Crutchfield, this radio has the most powerful tuner out of all the head units compatible with my vehicle. XM doesn't work either. Every once in a while when my iPhone is streaming IHeartRadio, the head unit skips...Like a CD.. Even after I unplug the phone. The only way to fix it is to reset the radio while driving. I also lost a lot of factory options and features. Alpine isn't what it used to be. This thing is pure junk! If your vehicle is equipped with a decent radio, I suggest keeping it or replacing it with a factory one if it has failed. You'd be stupid to downgrade to aftermarket head units if your vehicle has a premium infotainment system.
Pros: None!
Cons: It's pure crap.

I was hoping for more from an Alpine unit
Crutchfield customer from Greenville, SC on 11/23/2021
2006 Toyota Highlander
Very slow interface. In you are searching within the Navigator for a destination, the keyboard seizes with every letter typed. If viewing navigation while listening to music, it takes a minimum of 3 clicks to switch audio input. If viewing audio input, it takes a minimum of 2 clicks to change audio input. If you set up your own 'custom' menu, it takes 2 clicks to get to that menu (sometimes 3, depending). Because of the way your 'custom' menu is buried, it's essentially a useless feature for trying to make menu selections more accessible. If the unit is turned on, the system is compelled to maked noise: for example, if you were listening to BT from your phone and turned your car off and come back later to start your car, the unit will not have found active BT so it will cycle to the next audio input (FM radio, for example) which will be at a very different volume level. Seems like a small issue, except when you've owned other head units that don't behave this way. It's my suggestion that a head unit should stay where I last had it so I'm not compelled to A) hush the aggravating thing down, with volume controls that are so slow that they don't acknowledge you when the system is starting up then B) cycle through the poorly-designed menu system just to put it back where I had left it when I turned the car off. There is no 'standby' mode, which is actually extremely useful if you want to hush a system while using other features. A 'mute' is available.
Pros: The navigation works nicely and has been accurate for me.
Cons: Menu design is poor, and quite slow (see my written details) So-called "custom" menu feature is useless, since it's buried in the menus. Seems to be a fine piece of hardware, let down by frustrating interface design.

Way Too Complicated.
Crutchfield customer from BRECKENRIDGE, CO on 10/26/2021
I purchased new radios and speakers for two cars. The installation on our Jeep, with a JVC radio, and Kicker speakers, was straightforward, and logical. It sounds great. Unfortunately, the installation of this pretty Alpine unit was not easy, nor logical. I believe the issue is with the complexity of this unit. It does a lot more than my factory basic radio. That said, retrofitting this new model into an old car (2004) was beyond my capability. I feel that I am reasonably competent with such matters, but this required an electrician's knowledge. The complexity appears to be hooking up to the steering wheel controls. This requires all sorts of wire connections, including the emergency brake cable. I finally got the unit to work the basic fictions, thanks to the awesome support of Evan from Crutchfield. I decided not to mess the emergency brake wire, since slicing that was a risk I didn't want to take. So, now I have a radio (with deficient reception), CD, and CarPlay. I can't use the unit's GPS since I can't turn off the obnoxious warning when I exceed the speed limit by one MPH. The Bluetooth is also inoperable. I assume all these issues are related to my not connecting the final wire to the emergency brake. While this makes sense, splicing into a key wire is not so, rating I signed up for. I just wanted an upgrade form my old system.
Pros: Pretty unit, with many functions.
Cons: Wiring too complicated.

Decent radio. A little too expensive for all the bells and whistles to not work for all applications. The GPS has a habit of nagging you about your speed. Don't know who thought that would be a great feature...
Pros: Easy installation. Easy to navigate.
Cons: Nagging GPS. Some features incompatible with older vehicles.

A big disappointment
Michael from GREEN VALLEY, AZ on 9/20/2021
In retrospect I guess I just made some simple assumptions about a product at this price point that are not there. My old cheap JVC unit ($69) was able to read the CD TEXT off my CD's but this one can't. Thought it was a setting I was missing, but after spending a lot of time going through them all I called ALPINE support. The support guy thought I was from Mars when I asked about CD TEXT. On another topic, I was very disappointed with the Navigation. You don't even see the cross streets coming up...just the street you are currently on - and the general look/feel just seemed cheap to me. My cheap Garmin at least had this 'feature', and the graphic interface was 1000% better with the highway exit signs/etc. The saving grace is a very nice interface when I play music off my USB Flash Drives - I see all the info (artist & album).

Disappointed
Crutchfield customer from Atlanta, GA on 8/30/2021
2017 Toyota RAV4
It seems like a good radio and has lots of features for the money but I spent over 3 hours on the phone with tech support trying to get 1 wire connected properly. This radio requires a connection to the parking brake ground wire and nobody seems to know which wire that is in a 2017 Toyota RAV4. After many hours on the phone we finally found a solution that seemed to work. Yay! Sadly, when I started driving the car the parking break warning went off. Even though the parking brake was not on I could not get it to stop. I'm returning the radio and will have one installed by someone who knows the wiring in this vehicle. I am hugely disappointed.
Pros: Lots of great features
Cons: Can't connect to the parking brake ground in a RAV4

I love this radio. It went in exactly as the amazing instructions that I got from Crutchfield. The customer service was exceptional as always and the staff is so very knowledgeable. Thank you so much! The only thing I don't really love about this radio is that one it Hass to be in park in order to play a DVD, and I was hoping that my mom could stay occupied while I drove. The other thing is that it constantly tells you when you go over the speed limit. Even if you only go over by 1 mile an hour. Other than that I think it's been great!

I purchased this unit to replace a 12 year old Eclipse AVN726e. The old stereo worked fine, it just didn't have Apple CarPlay, so I needed to upgrade. The Alpine was fairly priced and in stock which is why I selected it. It has a lot of features that I like and I was able to get everything the previous unit had and more. Nav, HD Radio, SiriusXM, Bluetooth, and CD/DVD capability. With the Crutchfield installation sheets and Metra wiring harnesses, I was able to install everything in about 3 hours total. Overall I'm am very pleased with my purchase.
Pros: Lots of features both standard and optional.
Cons: It does take a bit to boot up.

Alpine head unit review
Crutchfield customer from Muskegon, MI on 6/23/2021
1998 Jeep Cherokee
Installed the Alpine head over the weekend. It went well and I only had to call Crutchfield once on Sunday. Didn't know if anyone would answer but a guy named Austin did and was able to answer my question and get me on my way. So far the head seems pretty nice which it should be for the cost... I was surprised the screen colors seem washed out though, like the colors are not very vibrant. I have to read the manual and see if there is a setting for this. One other thing is a woman's voice keeps telling me I'm speeding which is really annoying, hopefully I can figure out how to disable that...
Pros: Easy to navigate
Cons: Color of screen is washed out looking

Awesome Radio -

PROS 1) Looks like a it belongs to my Jeep (please note I ordered some special side panels to make it look extra nice) // 2) Customizable screen and buttons color // 3) Pretty easy to install with Crutchfield recommended accessories and instructions // 4) Sound is AMAZING, a significant improvement over a regular radio // 5) Screen looks great, not much glare, images look crisp // 6) Excellent connectivity: clear Bluetooth voice/calls, Android Auto connects flawlessly. // 7) Music from an USB works nicely too. // 8) The HD Radio and SiriusXM have significantly improved compared to my Clarion 2016 radio. The Alpine gives you all the information about the band, song, logos, etc... It is great when you want to know the name of a song and it looks really nice too. It has an awesome alert option: you can tag a song you like and the radio will tell you when someone is playing it. // 9) Navigation is effective and fast // 10) Accepts a secondary camera, great for front or side cam. // 11) Split screens allows you to see nav and your radio. // CONS - Only 20 presets on FM and SiriusXM, 30 would have been better // - I was not able to upload my Navigation favorites on this radio (I guess I will have to add them by hand, not a big deal) // - The radio takes a couple of seconds to start, but way faster than my previous NAV radio.
Pros: - Great look, great sound, Android Auto, nice HD and Satellite tuner
Cons: - Just 20 presets.

I looked around about a year before I purchased this radio and dash kit. The only reason I was apprehensive, I questioned my own abilities to still install a radio. I was surprised how easy it was. I called once regarding the yellow/blue wire that needed to be connected to the emergency brake. Cooper helped me out in a couple of minutes. Overall, it looks great. Have been told it looks factory(compliment in my book). Painting the dash kit was the toughest part. I have never owned an Alpine, and this thing is everything you hear about. WOW.
Pros: the pre-wiring option the support Awesome radio Sounds great
Cons: lack of physical photos, instructions - I am a picture guy, so that is just me.

2013 Toyota Tacoma
Really great head unit. Graphics are very pleasing and sharp. Has a lot of customizable colors and menu options. GPS works well, I like its search function and has a lot of interest points. I like that it still has some buttons, in retrospect I wish I had gone with a dial. I chose it because it still has a CD player and a few physical buttons. Bluetooth works well. I ran the HDMI line but have not tried it yet. Really sad about the installation kit though, it doesn't lineup very well at all with my dash. I had to do a lot of Dremeling and there's an obscene gap at the top that I'll have to deal with later. Would have been perfect if the whole thing sat about a quarter inch lower. I still can't get the steering wheel controls to work with the new unit either, though I followed the instructions to the letter. Brake line was a little tricky too, but I'm sure they all are on these new units. Long story short, their installation kit failed me. This unit has it unusually long boot up/start up time too, didn't see that mentioned in the description. I like that it has 20 presets and the HD radio function searches well. Have not tried the satellite radio. Overall I really like it for the price I got it.
Pros: Cd player, buttons, good amp, lots of menu options, lots of audio options, Sharp graphics, GPS tracks well, Subwoofer connections and controls built-in
Cons: Long start up time, can be tricky finding right menu, dial would be much easier for volume, installation can be difficult/kit may not align properly.

From Excitement to Disappointment
Crutchfield customer from ORLANDO, FL on 10/23/2020
1993 Mitsubishi 3000GT
Where do I start? Growing up Alpine was synonymous with great sounding car stereo equipment. Today, unfortunately Alpine (at least this unit) is too much focused on navigation and sound quality has gone out the window. I purchased this unit becuase it had a CD player, with the added bonus of DVD player touchscreen and blue tooth technology. I was told that it would sound at least as good as my old school Alpine 9886, but I found out quickly great sound is in the eye of the beholder. As far as sound quality, the unit is just loud, with very poor range of highs, lows, and mids. My subwoofers are just much, tweeters are non existent. It sounds like an overpriced fancy factory car stereo. Only later did I learn (after an expensive install and removal) that this unit only has a 3-band equalizer. And it takes forever to load. The sound quality of playing music on the phone, USB and DVD drops off DRAMATICALLY from store bought CD. Even if you are able to get past the sound quality issues, you still have to deal with an overpowering navigation system that ducks the and tells you "YOU ARE EXCEEDING THE SPEED LIMIT" and beeps every time you do a rolling stop sign in your own neighborhood. , but figuring out how to use the function (eject) are difficult. If you want a navigation system with all the bells and whistles, this unit is for you. If you want high fidelity quality sound, I would not recommend this unit. I expected more from Alpine.
Pros: The layout and the touchscreen are very nice. Very nice aesthetics and looks really cool.
Cons: Very poor sound quality (in my opinion) and little room for adjustment! Overpowering Navigation system.

Great sound quality that I would expect from Alpine! Also customizable to adjust even your back lit controls to match your vehicles dash running color.
Pros: An Excellent upgrade from the factory head unit. The Alpine INE-W970HD joined excellent with the existing amplified Bose speaker system, while using the PAC radio replacement interface that managed the steering wheel controls. All new features that my Mazda RX8 was in need of. The rear view camera was a great new added feature, since there was no previously camera with the vehicle.
Cons: Difficult to locate the vehicle speed signal to feed to the Alpine, but not a head unit issue.

Inaccurate description, paid nearly a thousand dollars for a head unit that is advertised with a 9 band equalizer when it only has 3 bass mid and treble. That is a huge problem I would not have bought this unit if I known it did not have a proper equalizer so now I'm out $375 for an install if they'll let me exchange it.

The Alpine W970HD was a great upgrade for my 2014 Toyota Tacoma. I had already replaced the unit once, but had a lot of problems with the first aftermarket unit I purchased 6 years ago. Crutchfield made it easy (relative as to how things go when you're ripping parts out of your dash) to upgrade, and I'm initially VERY happy with the results. Things I like: Awesome out-of-the-box sound - I didn't have to fiddle with the EQ settings a bunch - even "flat" the unit sounds good - only minimal adjustments to get the sound that I wanted. Quick boot, especially if you're in radio mode: The unit boots up pretty quickly, much quicker than the former aftermarket unit did. Backup camera: I love that the unit treats you like an adult, and doesn't have the "warning: check all surroundings" displayed across the screen that blocks parts of the view where you are backing - just simple guidelines that you can turn on or off - also has "hitch guide" as a setting. Supports Apple CarPlay seamlessly, so you can just tell Siri where you want to go. I haven't played much with the built-in GPS yet, probably not something I'll use a lot, but good to have for sure because in remote areas of the desert you do not have cell service, and this also has an "off road" and 4WD trails mode - looking forward to checking that out.
Pros: Good out-of-the-box sound. Fast boot up. Apple CarPlay. Clean backup screen.
