Alpine R2-S65C
Guest from Europe on 4/26/2025
Used this set in my 2024 Ford Ranger Raptor. I mounted the tweeters to the top of the door panels. But sound was unbearably harsh. I tried to set the crossover to -3dB, and it helped somewhat. But after some research, I used two resistors in a simple L-pad configuration to lower the tweeter level by additional 6.5dB. So total reduction was 9.5dB. And this was perfect. But still, a DSP is recommended if possible.

Great Sound When Configured Correctly

I was lukewarm on these for a while after I installed them. The tweeters were fine but the woofers were really lacking. No amount of playing with the EQ could get them to move like I wanted. I knew that they were getting enough power and verified that they weren't out of phase. I then began to read a bit online and I saw that a common complaint with this component system is that the tweeters are very bright and to lower them on the crossover. I took my door panels apart popped the lid on the tweeter and went from +3 db to -3 db. Let me tell you the difference was night and day! Long story short if you get these installed and feel they're lacking some bass or mid bass drop the db's on the crossovers!! I cannot give these five stars though. The speaker termination decks are incredibly fragile. Even with being careful I still managed to snap 2 of them.
Pros: Great bass and mid bass when setup correctly. Very clear and accurate system.
Cons: Fragile wire termination deck

Installed in 2016 Acura MDX, and these components systems are loud with a wide range of mid bass sound with all highs are in the tweeter. I advise to also amp these speakers Alpines R2 A60F that matches the proper setup of the wattage of an extra 100 watts. They lit up when you play high resolution or 4k music.
Pros: High Resolution, 4k, Fidelity, you name it. it can perform, but you need the R2 alpine amp to take advantage the extra 100 wattage
Cons: Less midrange,

Installed the components with an Alpine ILX-670 and the KTA-450. Sounds great, very detailed. Definitely a step up from the previous components I had in the truck.
Pros: Very detailed sound, highs are bright and clear, mids sound great. Not a lot of mid bass but the sub will handle that. Mounting system for the tweeter was perfect for my truck.
Cons: None so far

Just got around to installing these today. Installation was very easy, Alpine is awesome they give you pretty much everything you need to make installation easier. I installed thein in my F150 with the supplied adapter plates, then mounted the tweeters by the vents on top of the door panel. My crossover is set to 0db for the tweeters and they are still very bright, but they are very smooth and don't have a lot of shrill like other tweeter do. So far very impressed the sound great!

I'm glad I didn't spend twice the amount. These are D@MN good speakers. Please buy this set if you are using a DSP!!! You don't need the crossover, so save a few bucks on something that will not make a difference! These mids do have a large depth, so make sure they will work or plan on adapters. These speakers could use more power than what I'm giving them (Alpine PXE-C80-88) but they sound amazing as is. I highly recommended for anyone, even into higher end builds. Super picky audiophiles should probably test them out first. But I am picky and absolutely love them!!
Pros: Great sound, price
Cons: Mounting depth

Painful to listen to.

I installed these in my 1999 Mazda Miata with a Kenwood Excelon DPX795BH, and an Alpine amp (not sure what it is--installed by the previous owner). I've found that they're terribly fatiguing in the high-midrange, even with the tweeters set to -3dB in the crossovers. Some rock albums are literally painful to listen to, especially when a crash cymbal is hit. I've tried everything I could to EQ this spike out, but I can't seem to dial it back at all, unless I apply ridiculous cuts to the high-mids to the point where the music is unlistenable. I've tried every other setting the Kenwood has (Speaker size, Q-factor, loudness control, lowering the tweeter X-over frequency, turning the subwoofer and X-over up) to no avail. I previously bought Alpine S-S65C speakers with the previous stereo headunit, and they exhibited the same problem. Very disappointed in Alpine, and very disappointed in these speakers. I'm going to be returning them to try and find something better. I could believe that these speakers might work in some cars, but certainly not a Miata.

Compared To Excellent R-S65C
Eric from Omaha on 4/15/2023
I am comparing these to the excellent Alpine R-S65C with that amazing silk dome tweeter that never sounds fatiguing. Once you get these dialed in with the crossovers set, the levels set, and the time alignment set, you will be teleported to Hi-Rez bliss. I didn't even have to touch the EQ to make them sound amazing. I was very happy with my old R-S65C's from 2017 and I still think they sound really awesome but these have just a little extra in the details and some extra much appreciated mid-bass. I am still contemplating on keeping the mids in the doors and changing the tweeters back to the silk domes to compare again but this new tweeter they have here is really sweet sounding and so are the mids. I will update if I change the tweeters back to the silk domes, mixing and matching the silks with these new mids just might take it to the next level but we will see...
Pros: Definite increase in mid-bass and highs have a little more sparkle than the R-S65C but not fatiguing sparkle.
