A versatile performer

The R2-W8D4 handles up to 350 watts RMS, so it's ready for your high-powered amp. Its dual oversized 4-ohm voice coils offer wiring flexibility for multiple subwoofer setups. Since it works well in sealed or ported enclosures you'll enjoy your music the way you like to hear it.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible.

Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine R-Series subwoofer has a two-piece structural parabolic Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an oversized inverted polypropylene/ceramic composite dust cap, which increases rigidity and reduces cone distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of Santoprene Rubber, that allows a large linear excursion and greater SPL. The HAMRS design allows extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area.

Progressive Spider: The progressive spider has reinforced layer tinsel leads to ensure reliable and consistent control of the tinsel leads and eliminate any mechanical noise or interference often seen in high excursion cone designs.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensures a symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to reduce distortion and further improve power handling and output.

Dual Voice Coils: For system flexibility, the woofer has two 4Ω voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2Ω load; when wired in series, the woofer presents an 8Ω load.

Spring Terminals: The spring post terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire up to 12-gauge, pin connectors, or single banana plugs.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers, allowing you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2Ω load) or series (for an 8Ω load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: The recommended sealed box volume (gross) range is from 0.2 cubic feet to 0.5 cubic feet, with 0.3 cubic feet being the ideal size.

Ported Box Volume: The recommended ported box volume range is from 0.3 cubic feet to 0.75 cubic feet. The ideal size is 0.73 ft³ using a slot port measuring 8" (width) x 1" (height) x 17½" (length), resulting in a tuning frequency of 39 Hz.

Customer Q&A

Q
Would a Nippon 8 inch subwoofer tube, mount to this subwoofer?
barry k.  Feb 11, 2023

A
I cannot guarantee fit with products we do not carry, Barry. That being said, This Alpine R2-W8D4 R series 8" subwoofer has a hole cut out of 6.9" and should fit in most standard 8" subwoofer boxes (or tubes in this case) like the Nippon. It's a good idea to accurately measure your enclosure before order. Alpine Type R subwoofers have always been a top choice of mine for deep, quality bass in any vehicle!

Q
Would this fit as a replacement for the factory alpine sub in a 2016 ram crew cab?

A
It looks like if you have a 2016 Ram Crew Cab with the Alpine audio and factory subwoofer under the right rear seat Daniel, this Alpine R2-W8D4 Type-R 8" subwoofer is not a good fit. Sadly, it looks like all 8" Alpine branded replacement subwoofers are too large to fit in the factory enclosure. This Audiofrog GS8ND2 8" sub is a good replacement only requiring you to re-drill the subwoofer's mounting holes. This Audiofrog subwoofer will also work well with your factory amp OR a mono amp that does not exceed 250 watts RMS. If you are adding a powerful subwoofer amp, you can also use this amazing Focal P 20 Flax Evo in the second link. The Focal would not be a good choice if your plan is to run your new sub off the factory amp. I hope this helps Daniel! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_898GS8ND2/Audiofrog-GS8ND2.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_091SUBP20S/Focal-P-20-FSE.html

Q
Is it a noticeable improvement from the S-W8D4? I just swapped my S-S65C components to R-S65C and can't believe the difference. Wondering if it's worth doing the sub now too.

A
There is a noticeable difference between the two subs, although it may not be in the same way as you would notice with full range speakers. The R series is going to be a more heavy duty design with double stacked magnets and even though it has fairly similar power requirements, it's going to hit harder and give you tight, accurate bass at both high and low volumes. It will give you more thump than the S series if that is what you are after.
