Mind blown
Crutchfield customer from CHANDLER, AZ on 6/15/2025
I've been at this hobby for numerous decades and have owned Marantz, Yamaha, and Denon. I'll take this unit over them all. I believe this AVR brings about 85% of a $14000 Marantz combo of preamp and amp. Movies or music. Incredible achievement by Onkyo.
Pros: Everything is exceptional. The sound, the power, the processing, the speed of the interface, even the backlit remote with tone controls, and Dirac included.
Cons: None.

Good old school POUNDING
David from KANSAS CITY, MO on 4/26/2025
I needed to replace my pioneer head unit and used Crutchfield's years of experience to help guide my purchase. I detailed my current equipment and based on that I was given a few options that should suit my needs. I decided to go with the onkyo rz70 because of the expandable platform and the higher output per channel. I performed the initial setup which was frustrating because the unit kept shutting off and running a diagnostic when trying to adjust RH Front sound levels. Check speaker wire kept flashing. Performed a factory reset and the same issue resulted on the RH channel. I inspected all the connections at the rear of the unit and all were good. Proceed to inspect the connections at each speaker and found one positive cable had somehow pulled out essentially making a open circuit. I fixed the issue and continued the sound level adjustments. I do like that the unit was smart enough to protect itself and gave me a direction when I finally was smart enough to listen. Let's just say WOW this thing is a beast compared to my pioneer. I have it dialed up to run at 90% output and have found the sweet spot is between 75-79 on the volume. Was looking for some old school pounding with some new school features and I think the onkyo is a great fit. This thing is heavy and large but I'm very happy with my choice. Doesn't appear to have any of the issues like the RZ50 has. Would recommend this to a friend.
Pros: Lots of features good expandable platform allows you to connect several devices to the unit. Multiple HDMI ports
Cons: None so far

Greetings everyone. I had a Yamaha RX-A2060 that I loved, but it broke, now I bought the Onkyo TX-RZ70 wow I love it!!!! And I'm still learning with the receiver, the first calibration with Dirac completely eliminated the bass, but I looked for a video on YouTube and managed to tweak it pretty well and I still have a lot to play with the Onkyo. I downloaded some Harman target curves and I need to apply it to see how it goes lol.
Pros: Excellent sound separation and boost. Dirac Excellent.

I wanted the best "processor" with the most features but to remain in the ~$2k range....this one check all the boxes but the internal amps are powerfull and beeffy on their own. Build quality, ESS Dac's, Dirac, gui, app etc. I tested a yamaha a4a for about a week and it sounded good but this one takes everithyng to 11. It gives you finess and a 3d soundstage in music while having the impact and dynamics you crave in movies. I dont think it gest much better than this specially in the 3k range.
Pros: Build quality, a swis army knife av system. 4v on the pre-outs makes it a nice pre-pro + has the the ability to turn off the amp section.
Cons: Heavy and deep for some tv/media stands

Great value for price, Superb sound!
Jeffrey from Blaine, MN on 2/17/2025
This is really a wonderful piece of equipment. After dialing it in with the Dirac, it sounds suberb! Plenty of inputs for most systems. I am using this in a second system that is a 5.1.2 configuration. This system sees the bulk of our streaming and television watching. I have a 4k blu-ray player, turntable, cable box, Apple 4k tv streamer, CD changer, laserdisc player and a ps5 hooked up to this receiver. It replaced an older top of the line pre-pro and separate multi-channel amplifier that did not have Dirac. The sound of this receiver with the Dirac is much better than the old system. Very satisfied with this purchase and would highly recommend!

Feature rich receiver with good power and Beautiful sound
SP_FL from Wellington, FL on 1/4/2025
The RZ 70 is an upgrade to my existing Onkyo NR656. The receiver came extremely well packed. Its quite heavy which was expected due to the transformers and current handling capacity. I've set the receiver to currently power my B&W 603 S3's and will be shortly adding the surround and center speakers for a 5.1 setup. The receiver is very easy to setup. The sound packs a punch and it can effectively power my 200W front speakers. The sound seems much more cleaner with better highs and lows. The one gripe, not a shortfall is the need for a monitor/ TV for the initial setup. You can remove once done, unless you have a home theater system with a TV. The sale made the deal extra special and affordable. I'm very pleased with Crutchfield for the 2nd day delivery and Onkyo/ Klipsch for an outstanding receiver!

After the sub outs on my X4700h went bad I and knowing Audyssy pretty well, I decided to try something new. Dirac with bass control after the purchasing during the holiday sale, is a game changer, my Klipsch Rp speakers have never sounded better. The RZ70 has all the power my 5.2.2 system can handle. At full tilt, which is 10db lower in volume compared to the Denon the Onkyo barely gets warm. Sound is not as warm as the Denon but my ears are getting used to that. However the settings do take a bit of fiddling with and the receiver is much deeper than the Denon.
Pros: Dirac live, powerful, inputs all 4k 120hz.
Cons: Lack of dynamic volume feature Probably won't fit in most ent centers

Initial Thoughts
Carlos from Fort Pierce, FL on 11/28/2024
Bought a Onkyo TX-RZ70 on sale for $2,000. Its an awesome home theater receiver for the price. Setup was straightforward, build quality appears high. I upgraded from a Denon AVR-X4300H 9.2 Channel receiver. I haven't pushed the audio or video to its limits; audio is crisp and the transition to the Onkyo has been seamless. I love how the video screen does not fade when moving from one format to another when commercials pop up in Youtube videos. That was so annoying. AppleTV 4k works seamlessly as well. I am very happy with my purchase. If you don't need all the features, the RZ50 may be a better route for some customers because a number of the features are identical between the two and the RZ-50 sits at about 1/2 the price.

This Onkyo receiver in one word is Amazing. I replaced my Denon 4700 and couldn't be happier. Lots of power on hand. Drives my 5.2.4 Polk speakers with ease. Including my Polk Legend 400 center channel which is 4 ohms. My Denon would get hot when pushed hard. The Onkyo RZ-70 doesn't even get warm. The Dirac live is also amazing. Movies sound better than ever. Better surround sound than I've ever had. Especially in Dolby Atmos. My LG 77" Oled looks better than ever. The video processor is so much better than before. Couldn't be happier. Thanks Crutchfield

TX-RX70 May Be Your Best Option
Barry from Calico Rock, AR on 11/3/2024
This is a very good home theater receiver, it replaced an Yamaha RX-V1065 that was beginning to act up on HDMI source switching. The TX-RZ70 is better in every way accept for the remote (not learning and cannot control other devices, i.e. TV). So far I've only set it up with Dirac and it sounds great in my room. I have it set up in a 7.2 speaker configuration, all the speakers disappear and sound just come from all around and where it is suppose to. The stand alone power seems to be more than adequate for my speaker setup. I haven't explored all the features of this receiver, but for music and movies/TV it has been outstanding. The video processing has made my TV come alive with more vibrant colors, brighter picture, sharper picture and darker blacks. It's like getting a TV upgrade with the receiver. I saved money with the open box option, everything seemed brand new, except for some scuffs on the box and some cracked foam inside.
Pros: +Ease of use +Dirac Included for free +Lipsinc with the video is perfect +Lower price compared to other manufacturer unit on the same tier. +Receiver runs cool and quiet.
Cons: Remote Unit may be too deep for your cabinet.

Great Receiver!
Timothy from Bluefield, WV on 9/1/2024
The Onkyo RZ 70 is an absolute powerhouse of a receiver, packed with all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a premium unit. From the moment I set it up, the sound quality was nothing short of remarkable. Whether I'm watching movies or listening to music, the clarity, depth, and immersive experience it delivers are exceptional. One of the standout features is Dirac Live, which has truly transformed my listening area. After running the calibration, the sound is now perfectly tuned to my room's acoustics. It eliminates the common pitfalls of room dynamics, and I can hear every detail with precision. The improvement in clarity, especially in the low-end frequencies, is noticeable-bass feels tighter and more controlled, while vocals and instruments are incredibly well-defined. With support for the latest formats like Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and HDMI 2.1 features like 8K passthrough and 4K/120Hz gaming, the RZ 70 has everything I need for both high-end home theater and gaming experiences. The user interface is intuitive, and setup was surprisingly easy for a receiver of this complexity. Overall, the Onkyo RZ 70 is a game-changer in terms of audio quality and features. If you're looking for a top-tier receiver that offers incredible sound, advanced room calibration, and future-proof technology, this is the one to get. Highly recommended! I'd like to thank Crutchfield for contacting me on a Sunday to verify it was me that made the purchase. Outstanding c

A beast
Kevin from Bethesda, MD on 8/28/2024
This is my third Onkyo receiver. I've loved every one, but this is by far the best one I've owned. Three zones, more channels, new compatibility with Apple and Amazon devices. We were particularly impressed the way it can play music based on our oral requests to Alexa. Handles different inputs to the various zones effortlessly. Love it! But because it has so much capability, the RZ70 is big and heavy. Had to do a bit of retrofitting on our media cabinet to get it and all the accompanying speaker and other wires in - so check the specs beforehand to ensure you have sufficient room for this beast.
Pros: Affordability Power Handling multiple inputs in different zones effortlessly Compatibility with Apple and Amazon devices

I was looking for an upgrade for my 20 year old Yamaha RXVI avr receiver that served me really well. It was one of the top home theater receivers back in the day. This Onkyo TX-RZ 70 has all the bells and whistles that any audiophile enthusiast could asked for not unless you are putting together an extremely outrageous system consisting of 13 to 15 channels of amplification. Onkyo RZ70 > Anthem 1140, Yahama A8A and Denon 6700
Saunder from Saint George, UT on 8/7/2024
I've owned an Anthem MRX 1140, Denon 6700H, Yamaha Aventage A8A and now Onkyo RZ70. Honestly it's super close between the Anthem and the Onkyo, which is saying something since the Anthem is double the price. Anthem: best design; ARC is really good; best mobile app; sound and power were great; not worth the $ IMO (at least for my current use case). Previously, I had a very nice 6 figure theater and it made more sense in that use case with the different amps. Denon: I'll probably never buy a Denon again...died after 3.5 years, which was my fault due to ventilation. The sound was good but Audyssey is kind of trash. DIRAC probably would've changed my mind. The Yamaha is unreal when it comes to watching movies, but was pretty meh when it came to music and anything with streaming content; hence, why I went to the Onkyo. +1 for the PEQ on the Yamaha. Didn't hate YPAO. Definitely the best remote. Slight edge to the Yamaha on stereo music listening. The Onkyo is the best bang for your buck, and honestly just might be the best receiver when you factor in DIRAC. Onkyo under reports their wattage (according to Gene), you get DIRAC for free, and it's much better when it comes to streaming content. DIRAC has been a big game changer. I also have a Klipsch Reference Premier 7.2.4 system, so I added all of my speakers in the settings; honestly, not sure what difference it made. Atmos music sounds better on the Onkyo than the Yamaha.
Pros: DIRAC, Price, Power, Klipsch Integration
Cons: Remote

Right now I am running a 7.1 while working to get to 7.1.4 but I cannot wait. As you can tell I am more of an audio than a visual person. HDMI does not support 1440P
Guest from Australia on 3/23/2024
So I bought one of these (Australia $4300) and was stunned to find the PC resolution for 27 inch monitors , QHD,, 1440P is not supported. This is astounding for something "built for gaming" as it's a standard resolution for 27" and 32" gaming monitors, which I was inputting into GAME and outputting to "Zone2+HDMI" , for now I've had to accept a 4k/60 signal instead of the much preferred 1440P/120. Quite upset to be honest after I had tried the Yamaha RX V6A which did support and was AUD $899... I've paid up over four times the price for yet another product with dodgy HDMI signals compatibility. Why can nobody get this right?
Pros: Solid build ,and easy to directly hook up the 7.2.4 plus Zone2 speakers on their own terminals. not yet really tested
Cons: HDMI does not support 1440P

this is a phenomenal performer on movies, that is mostly subjective though most will not admit it. i prefer it slightly over anthem and emotiva mr1, slightly, they are great as well in regards to pure audio performance. and this is much better than sony's 5000es, which is grossly overrated to me. music performance is more of a mixed bag. there are a few traditional options for music, but i prefer anthem's more customization approach and emotiva's one stop approach for music and movies through hdmi. for controls this is the best of the 4 mentioned, giving us the flexibility to do adjust fully.
Pros: too many to list
Cons: fans are on often and are audible

After living with the Polk Legend 800, they make me wonder about speakers that do not have stereo dimensional array technology interaural crosstalk is very real. They put sound exactly where it should be that is in the recording, the detail, clarity and base is amazing. I went from Onkyo NR7100, then Onkyo RZ50, and now the RZ70. The NR7100 was awesome on the Polk Legend 800, then the RZ50 was beyond expectations and now the RZ70 is just mind blowing, I hear things in recording the creator may not have been aware is in the recording like a musician turning sheet music and hearing a gnat flying around the mic on a top of the chart Hit, all the Onkyo's I mentioned are Bi-Ampable, I Bi-Amp them all I would recommend to anyone purchasing any of the Polk Legend Series to Bi-Amp. If I had purchased originally just the Onkyo RZ70 paired with the Polk Legend 800 I would never know what I have, but all these Onkyo RZ50 paired to the Polk Legend 600 and the NR7100 paired to the Polk Legend 200 tell me what I have so I appreciate the Onkyo RZ70 paired to Polk Legend 800 even more. Onkyo NR7100 paired to Polk Legend 200: Bi-Ampable, Just the Left and Right Channel no Center Channel Bi-Amp. A game changer
Sid from Bel Air, MD on 9/27/2023
Before I express my thoughts on the RZ70 allow me to give you some context. I am in the market for a flagship AVR and I want to be sure I get what I'm paying for. I have tested the Sony AZ5000 and 7000, Denon 4800, marantz cinema 50 , Yamaha A8A and of course the RZ70. I can tell you with full confidence that the Onkyo impressed the hell out of me. It's more dynamic and punchy without being bright or dull. I have a small room and always had boomy bass but the Onkyo shines with tight bass and clarity. The included Dirac is a game changer. You can tweak the sound accordingly to your taste. You will not regret buying this. It truly is the best AVR I've heard. It's not laid back like the Marantz and is much more enjoyable for movies. Happy buying! Sid

David from Parma OH on 8/2/2023
Purchased this from Crutchfield. They are great to deal with as usual. But the RZ70 I received had issues. I am hoping they can be fixed with future firmware updates, but they were not tolerable for me. First off my HT Tv was a Vizio M7 and the RZ70's configuration screen refused to display. All I got was white noise on the screen. After trouble shooting with Crutchfield and experimenting I invested in a new TCL QM8 and got the same results. I returned the RZ70 and exchanged it for a Denon AVX6700H which has no problem displaying its menu on the TV. FYI the RZ70 displays its menu at 720P. Its seems newer TV's may have an issue with that resolution. I suggest to Onkyo, to up the resolution to at least 1080i. But what really upset me was after Audyssey calibration it stopped playing ATMOS sound tracks from my Fire TV. It would never lock-on to the signal. It just toggled back and forth between ATMOS and Direct mode all by itself. That's when I sent it back. It is a shame because for a brief time that I did have it to listen to, it seemed very good. Hopefully Onkyo can resolve what seems to be software related issues and this receiver takes its place along all the original excellent Onkyo from the past.
Pros: Sound
Cons: Software/Firmware Bugs

OK I've had the receiver for about two weeks now, and I am very pleased with it to this point very good sound lots of options and very good separation. Also I had ordered back in April an az 5000es Sony which I was happy with up until the morning that it malfunction and shut itself down, I called Crutchfield, and as always returning, it was no trouble that's why I still do business with them and they got me the new stereo shipped right away oh and by the way, the remote for Sony was horrible
Pros: sound and ease of operation and a Remount with a back light
Cons: Heavy
