Should have bought this years ago
Seth from Anacortes, WA on 4/23/2025
Not only was this extremely affordable, but the installation support made this one of the best purchases I have made. I have purchases many items from Crutchfield and they never disappoint. I wanted to add keyless entry to my 98 econoline camper van. The Viper 412 did this and had many more options. When I first received the kit, I got a little overwhelmed by the apparent complexity of the wiring installation, but a 10 minute conversation with tech support had the unit up and running and working flawlessly. I should have made this upgrade a long time ago.

Viper 412V
Jamaun from Aurora, CO on 4/22/2024
My factory keyless entry crapped out so I bought this. Works how I need it to. Easy install as well.
Pros: Locks and unlocks my doors.
Cons: My factory option of the doors locking once the car is in gear, and unlocking once the car is in park, is a thi g of the past.

Viper 412V Remote Keyless Entry - Universal
Milo from Conway, AR on 3/17/2024
This remote worked exactly like I needed it to, which isn't much, just the original driver unlock, doors unlock, and trunk unlock. Crutchfield was great in trying to supply information for my 1992 Caprice. Fortunately, for everything except ground and power, I was able to use the existing module plug and placed the Viper in original location. I got an assortment of plug pins and a crimper, so that was fairly easy. The '92 Caprice doesn't have any the the remote bells and whistles that modern cars do, but I thought about trying to add them, such as parking flash, but decided that could wait. Now I have been doing car wiring and mods for fifty years, but this was the most daunting thing I have ever attempted, no fault of Crutchfield or the manufacturer. I first wired it up on my work bench to verify that indeed, everything worked as it should. After all, laying upside down in the trunk of a car is no fun for a 76-year old man. I did install the blue light under the back glass where it could be seen, as I thought it would be a good deterrent. I had no intention of using the switch for the special programming features, however. One piece of information the manufacturer left out, which I think Crutchfield shold supply, is that the little black cord on the module, with the keys attached, SHOULD NOT BE CUT! It is the antenna. The factory module has no such external antenna, so someone might think the cord is only to keep keys attached, since they are programmed with the modu
Pros: Small and compact. Has lots of extra features, none of which are necessary to basic operation, such as keyless entry. I would hate to think what it would cost for a professional installer to install. Probably at least 2 or 3 times what the unit cost.
Cons: They supplied a relay output for up to 30 amps for the DOMELIGHT? But couldn't supply relays for all the basic lock and unlock functions? They put a relay on the parking light flash, which is nice, but not necessary. I HAD TO USE TWO EXTERNAL RELAYS just to make the basic driver/passenger unlock and lock work. When you see poorly, or cheaply designed units like this, you realize you would have gladly paid more for a unit designed properly with some actual thought to how it would be used.

Good quality and lots of features. Complex wiring needed
Ryan from Spartanburg, SC on 1/27/2024
Quality aftermarket keyless entry option. Lots of functionality options depending on what other accessories and features you're after. Requires a good bit of wiring know-how if you plan to DIY. Crutchfield may be able to provide wiresheet for your specific vehicle to help you locate correct connections to make. I found many of the harness wires too short and required extending these to make connections needed. The key fobs are programmable and long-range. Reasonable price.
Pros: Good quality, reasonable price, lots of features
Cons: Complex wiring involved, some harness wires too short

Replaced failing 1998 Ford E150 RKE module
RJ from Bartlesville, OK on 10/13/2023
I replaced the RKE module in a 1998 Ford E150 custom van with the Viper 412V and eight relays. I have the Ford shop manuals for the vehicle. Could not have done it with out them. There are several relays in the RKE that had to replaced with external relays. The only functionality I did not retain was the dome light coming on when the door handle is pulled. I could have retained it, but I did not want to keep it. The remotes have excellent range. The installation did require a significant effort, but has worked flawlessly.
Pros: Replaced all of the RKE functionality. Staged unlock. Driver's door and then other doors. Great remote range.

Installed in my 2006 F250 w/o factory keyless entry. My first time ever installing something like this, crutchfields customer support is unmatched. They walked me through every step. Once you figure out what wires to tie in, product is nearly plug and play.

Ordered it for my 92 f150 mostly for the remote start function, but most indefinitely will using the keyless entry. It seems well built, pretty easy to understand instructions. If you don't know much about electronics or vehicle wiring. I would recommend taking it to a professional.
Pros: The staff was super helpful. Made sure I had everything that I needed. And made sure it was shipped out as soon as possible.

Directions were a bit lacking and assumed a bit more knowledge than I had. Crutchfield really went above and beyond, talking me through it and giving me a customized wiring diagram which completely made it a breeze. Fantastic service.
Pros: Works as advertised.
Cons: Instructions suck but Crutchfield will get you what you need.

Works great
Crutchfield customer from Merritt Island, FL on 7/15/2021
1977 Chevrolet Corvette
Does exactly as it is advertised to do. I wanted to add a remote lock/unlock capability to a 1977 Corvette. Using this and the audiovox lock actuators also sold by Crutchfield, I was able to make that happen. As with any vehicle, extreme patience and knowledge of the electrical system is necessary for a successful installation - there are a lot of wires that need connecting. This Viper system doesn't interfere with the simplistic factory alarm in this older Corvette but the factory alarm is not sophisticated enough to recognize the existence of this system so the owner must choose how/whether to deal with the factory alarm. There are workarounds for the imaginative installer but completely replacing the factory alarm with an aftermarket system might be an alternative for someone wanting to have all the systems play well together.
Pros: Crutchfield may want to include the door lock actuators in the list of related accessories for this product. I found the actuators by accident on the Crutchfield site and bought a set at a significantly lower price than available elsewhere. The products work perfectly together.

Directed Electronics, the absolute worst in customer support/service
Crutchfield customer from Placitas, NM on 9/12/2019
Crutchfield gets 5 starts, Directed (company that makes the unit) owes stars. I spent some time researching a remote unlock device for my Ford E450 and the Viper 412V was recommended. I ordered one from Crutchfield who was excellent in trying to provide a wiring diagram even though it did not exactly match my vehicle. I also noticed the documentation included in the brand new box said it was for a 211HV and not the 412V. I called Directed who rudely told me they don't support retail customers????? and to call Crutchfield. What kind of company includes incorrect documentation with their product then slams the door on the customer without any help. I called Crutchfield who expressed they thought perhaps Directed updated the model but not the box. Considering all the roadblock I decided to return the unit to Crutchfield who happily provided an RMA label and refunded the price paid. I will always use Crutchfield as my no.1 goto company but Directed can suck eggs.
Pros: Very capable if you can get it to work
Cons: Zero Customer service/support from manufacture, incorrect documentation

1996 Toyota Camry
This purchase from Crutchfield was my third Viper 412V remote system. This is by far the best solution to add/replace keyless entry. I added to two classic Mercedes (made work with vacuum system) and one late nineties Toyota Camry. The purchase with Crutchfield was phenomenal as usual (have been a customer since 1986). The quality of service and the products offered are terrific and the support staff are second to none!
Pros: Excellent keyless system. Very durable with terrific range. Phenomenal customer service from Crutchfield.
Cons: None I can think of.
