Sonos vs. Bose

Although this is my review of the Sonos Ace, because I have the Bose Ultra Headphones also, I thought I would write a review that primarily compares them. Sound Quality The Immersion mode separates the Bose from the Sonos and thus results in better sound quality, even though that quality may be somewhat manufactured by the technology. Case Because the Sonos case is more flat compared to the Bose, I find the Sonos is better suited to travel. Notifications Bose is the winner here. With the Sonos, you have to check the app to find out the remaining battery charge and/or to verity what mode you are in; with the Bose, a voice tells you the percentage of battery charge remaining, and what mode you have activated. Knob Controls Slight edge to Sonos. You can easily feel the volume control knob on the Sonos, whereas you slide your finger along an channel on an earpiece on the Bose, so the feedback isn't as certain. Plus, the on/off switch is more consistent on the Sonos (the Bose automatically connects, which it sometimes doesn't). Comfort The specs indicate the Bose is lighter, but I've worn both on long conference calls, and the comfort is a bit better with the Sonos. ANC I tested both while sitting on my lawn tractor. The Sonos was slightly better, but I think its because the seal was better around my ear. Look, these are both wonderful headphones. I'd say the Sonos is better for business purposes, but the Bose is

Pros: On/off switch ANC (seal around ear is better) Knob Controls (better tactile function) Case (better for travel) Comfort

Cons: Notifications (via voice) Sound quality (no Immersion mode)

Good, but controls and app are seriously lacking

After a horrible Apple Airpod Max experience I decided to try the Sonos Ace. While these are way better the sound quality on the Apple Airpod Max is better. Unlike the Airpod Max these are very stable while listening on my iPhone 16. No drops or problems while taking phone calls and these headphones have recent quality when listening to music. But, they are not audiophile quality. I appreciate the hardshell travel case. The worse part is controlling the active noise cancellation, I can only do it reliably from the app. The buttons on the headphones themselves are useless. The length of the USB-C cable is good and I do like the USB-C to 3.5 inch adapter as well.

Pros: Hardshell case, corded accessory cables

Cons: Controls and Sonos app is horrible

Pretty nice for use with Sonos system

They are pretty nice. The noise canceling isn't as good as some others. The case for travel is cheap. Sound is good though and these sit on a headphone stand for use when I don't want to disturb others while watching movies or listening to music in house. Got on sale and think worth it.

Pros: Easy to switch from speakers to headphones for tv use. Sound nice.

Cons: Cheap travel case, soso noise canceling

Very comfortable and secure. Well built. Use while walking and talking on phone is great. Music Sounds good, but not as rich or detailed as my old B&W p9. Noise cancellation is great, I can do laundry, etc and only hear music even at the lowest volume. Looking forward to seeing how they are on a plane. This is my first pair of noise canceling headphones.

Pros: Noise cancellation. Long battery life. Pauses when you take them off so you don't miss one note of your music.

Cons: Not as rich and detailed as my B&w P9. The feel of the case makes my teeth cold and I will try to get a different case, which rather defeats the effort recycle d material. Can I recycle this case? But clearly that doesn't affect function.

Perfect for traveling

I have a lot of headphones. Mark Levinson, Focal, Beats, Bose, Apple.... I did not need to purchase these but I was curious and since I travel a lot, swapping out pairs is fun to me. The first thing I noticed was how small the case is. It's literally half the bulk of the Focal and Levinson case. That's big for me. Build quality is great, and comfort is very good. I like the controls as well. Sound quality is really nice but I've only tested bluetooth from my ipad to the Ace. Noise cancelling was better than Levinson, Focal and Beats. It was on-par with Bose in my opinion. I want to check out movies soon. My only complaint is the power button is at the bottom and clicks in and out. When I try to adjust the headphones on my head, I mistakenly hit the power button. Something I just need to get used to.

Pros: Small case, great build quality, above average noise cancelling and clear dynamic sound

Cons: I hit the power button when adjusting the headphones sometimes.

Headphone Goldilocks

I waited for a Black Friday discount and Sonos to make software/firmware upgrades before purchasing Ace headphones. I ended up with more frugal cans with significantly improved audio quality. While the sound of all wireless headphones with a software/firmware interface can be enhanced, the challenge is whether Sonos will continue to advance the Ace's post-purchase audio quality and noise reduction. To their credit, so far.so good. Most reviews have lauded the Ace's comfort and ease of use. D'accord; the Ace uniquely feels like a broken-in hat. Reviewers also accurately explain that the Ace uses a frustratingly different interface than Sonos speakers. The product's other challenges include optimizing user access to very high-resolution and Spatial Audio sources via future updates. Still, the Sonos Ace's current combination of audio quality and noise reduction, user operability, lightweight, comfort, 30-hour battery life, price, support, and aesthetics now befit Goldilocks. IMHO, the headphone's combination of features is just right. Three tips: be patient for the Ace to turn on, turn it off after use, and pair it with high-quality/lossless music apps. I also salute Crutchfield's helpful advice and swift delivery.

Pros: The Ace provides an excellent combination of user operability, lightweight, comfort, aesthetics, 30-hour battery life, price, support, noise reduction, and audio quality.

Cons: Is Sonos committed to upgrading the Ace via software/hardware updates?

Solid Bluetooth headphones. Limited use w/ Sonos (for now)

Nolan from Charlottesville, VA on 8/21/2024

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

Despite being made by Sonos, for me these are really Bluetooth headphones that can also do a particular, limited thing with Sonos sound bars ("TV Audio Swap"). The Bluetooth range was excellent, the control buttons are easy to use, and the sound was pretty good across different types of music, podcasts, and phone calls. The head tracking feature works, but I don't understand the purpose, I suppose. Also not into the Spatial Audio feature: was getting a weird, speaking-through-a-plastic-playground-slide effect when listening to David Attenborough narrate a new nature documentary (in Dolby Atmos from Netflix into a Sonos Beam) when Spatial Audio was enabled. Also tried using Spatial Audio with some very-familiar-to-me stereo music and did not enjoy how it changed the stereo mix I'm so used to hearing. I don't enjoy virtual surround mixes in general, so this might be more about my preferences than how Sonos implements surround audio (downmixed or upmixed) through their headphones (they might be doing as good a job as anybody). Some technical notes to keep in mind re: the TV Audio Swap feature: 1) These can only play the TV source from the Sonos sound bar (i.e., the audio coming into the bar via an HDMI or optical cable), 2) You cannot have the sound bar/Ace grouped with other Sonos devices when doing TV Audio Swap, and 3) my LG TV remote did adjust the volume of the Ace when doing TV Audio Swap with a Beam via HDMI.

Pros: Great range and sound in Bluetooth mode. Active noise cancellation works pretty well. Metal construction feels sturdy. Tight clamping force on my larger head, so not likely to fall off.

Cons: Clamping force a bit too tight for long listening sessions. Didn't enjoy the Spatial Audio feature, and without using that, I couldn't hear a difference between my TV's Bluetooth output and the TV Audio Swap from the Sonos sound bar.

Underwhelmed

I love Sonos and was hoping to be blown away and love these headphones. I was underwhelmed. The mids are hollow, treble is strong and bass is okay. Do I think with a firmware upgrade to improve the sound and an addition of a TRIBAND EQ, they could make it better? Yes. Maybe then I'll re-purchase. Until then, I'll be returning them and enjoy my other Sonos equipment that I love.

Pros: Nice build quality

Cons: Sound is underwhelming

I've invested in Sonos products for years. Every room in my house has a Sonos product in service. My media room pairs an LG OLED television with Sonos top of the line surround system. I purchased the Sonos Ace last week. I've been writing Sonos for over 2 years to develop and introduce a wireless headphone to pair with my surround sound system. I am happy that they took their time to develop an outstanding wireless headphone. The Sonos Ace has exceeded my expectations of what a set of wireless headphones can deliver. When I watch a movie using the Sonos Ace Headphones I recieve the true audio experience that the director intended. When you consider all the time and effort that is put into the sound of a movie, you must listen to a set of these headphones to know what you are missing

Pros: Comfort Sound Ease of Use Superior Noise Cancelling Ascetics Battery Life Easy Set Up

Cons: The years of waiting.....but I appreciate the final product. In this case patience was a virtue

I really really really wish they were great. They're not. They split my head with fatigue. My fav headphones are the Focal Clear MG, the Sennheiser HD600 and the Sony XM4 (over ear). I'd take any of these long before these new Sonos. But, you have to start somewhere. I look forward to V2.

A music Ace

Bobby from Franklin, MA on 6/5/2024

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Wow I just received these headphones and they are the best sounding noise-canceling headphones I've heard. I've had 3 editions of the Bose including the latest Quiet comfort Ultra cans and the Sony 1000XM5. I thought the Bose Ultras were better all-around than the Sony. The noise canceling with the Bose and Sonos are similar so far. I haven't been on a flight which is the real test for me. The sound quality with the Sonos is superior. I'm hearing music differently than I have before with cans. The clarity and instrumental separation is outstanding. Their Spatial Audio and head tracking is very cool. When you move your head the sound moves like you were in front of the band and moving around at a concert. A real Ace from Sonos.

Pros: The sound of music. The best sounding noise canceling headphones I've heard for critical listening. The clarity of music and separation of instruments even on complex songs.

Cons: Price. More expensive than Bose and Sony top-of-the-line cans. The Sonos app is having issues but you don't need to listen to music etc. Through the app.
