Features

Optical Digital-to-HDMI Adapter: If your TV does not have a HDMI ARC input, but does have an optical (toslink) digital output, this Optical digital-to-HDMI adapter can be used to get sound from your TV to a Sonos Amp, Sonos Beam, and other soundbars that only feature an HDMI ARC jack. This adapter will still support 5.1ch Dolby Digital and 2ch PCM.

Q
I have samsung sound bar hws800b with hdmi arc port only. My Samsung tv J series has optical output only ( no hdmi). Will this adapter work for Samsung?
rah  Feb 08, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings Rah. Thank you for your question. This works for sound bars other than Sonos as well. If you have ARC on your bar, this adapter will work.

Q
My smart TV only has HDMI. and my Bose Sound Bar has optical audio. What can I use to hook them up?
juan  Jan 13, 2024
1 answer
A
This Sonos Optical Audio Adapter will not help with your specific situation, Juan. You will need the Ethereal CS-DACA digital to analog converter with ARC support in the link below. This will allow you to harvest the ARC audio from the HDMI connection from your smart TV and convert it to Toslink optical to connect to your Bose soundbar. You can also consider upgrading your soundbar to one that supports audio return channel (ARC) features with an HDMI connection. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120CSDACA/Ethereal-CS-DACA.html

Q
I have a tv with arc i need to connect to older vizio home theater sound system with optical but no hdmi. What do i need for this?
patricia  Jul 08, 2023
1 answer
A
It is likely that your TV also offers optical audio output. If this is the case, you may simply connect your TV's optical output to your home theater system. There would be no additional benefit in using an HDMI ARC to optical conversion.

Q
My DVD player only has HDMI audio out so will this work to connect an optical cable to my receiver?
todd  Feb 26, 2023
1 answer
A
This will not work, Todd. This Sonos optical audio adapter is for use with Sonos Amp and TV's that do not have an HDMI output available. The Sonos adapter ONLY goes one way from optical TO HDMI. You will want to snag the Ethereal CS-HDMABO1 HDMI audio de-embedder with pass-through in the handy link below, this will extract the audio from your HDMI out on your DVD player and convert to toslink. Keep in mind that will only support 5.1 decoding and not any Atmos or other 7-channel content due to the limitations of the optical port. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120HDMABO1/Ethereal-CS-HDMABO1.html

Q
I have the Sonos ARC but want to use the Oticon TV hearing aid Bluetooth streamer which only uses Optical. The TV Streamer 3.0 essentially uses optical pass thru. If I run Optical from my LG C9 TV to the TV Streamer ???in??? and connect the adapter to optical out on the TV Streamer with HDMI going to the Sonos ARC, would this work? If so would it create any latency? Unfortunately the LG C9 will not do ARC and Optical simultaneously. Thanks.
robert  Feb 25, 2023
1 answer
A
The Sonos optical digital audio to HDMI adapter cable would be a great move here, Robert. You are going to lose any CEC control features on the Sonos ARC sadly (the bar turning on automatically with the TV through HDMI), but you will gain the ability to run the optical toslink from your LG C9 TV to your personal listening device, and then through to the Sonos ARC bar. This is really the best possible option to enjoy both devices at the same time.

Q
Can you use this, in a pair to take TOS link audio from your TV over HDMI then the second one on the other end, back to TOS link to a normal 5.1 receiver ?
david  Feb 22, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings David, and thank you for your question. That sounds logical, and sounds like that would work. Unfortunately we are not going to make that type of a test. This could be just a one way conversion too. It may only convert light pulse to copper, but not copper back to a light pulse. That adapter is made by Sonos to attach one of their bars that only have an HDMI ARC input, but the TV they are needing to use with the bar only has an optical out. See if you can just run an optical cable from your TV to your AV receiver.

I have an LG soundbar but my TV my TV doesn't have an optical input. Can I use an an opital to hdmi cable so I can use my soundbar.?
sara  Nov 20, 2022

A
This adapter only works with TV's that have an optical audio output. Since your TV does not have that audio output, you cannot use this adapter with your TV. We may have gear to help connect your soundbar to your TV. I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation

My TV will only output surround sound from the HDMI ARC port and my receiver only has optical inputs. Will this cable convert HDMI ARC to optical audio to fix that?
nabhan  Feb 19, 2022

A
I used this because my TV HDMI ARC stopped working. I used it so I could use a different part of my TV and now my ARC system does work, just not through the HDMI ARC.

Can this work with a PS4 because the PS4 hdmi is broken?
charlotte  Dec 11, 2020

This does not work to pass video. It connects to an optical port which is audio only. It will not work in place the the HDMI port. You will have to try to get it repaired. I wish I had different news for you there

Is this adapter bi-directional? Can it be used to connect my surround receiver's hdmi output to another device's (DAC's) Optical Input?
paul  Sep 13, 2020

Hi Paul. The Sonos Optical Audio adapter is not a bi-directional adapter, and would not work in your proposed application. Please chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. We will be happy to go over your setup with you to possibly find another solution.

Q
Can I remotely control my sound bar using my TV remote using Sonos optical audio adapter? I read you couldn't control the sound bar via a TV remote using only a optical connection, only able to using a hdmi cable. Will this converter allow me to control my sound bar using a TV remote?
fury364  Aug 16, 2020
1 answer
A
Yes, once you set up your TV to use the sound at you should be able to. However, I would suggest downloading the SONOS app to iPhone/Android and setting up and controlling it from there. I have 2 identical Sonos sound bars (one on an LG TV that required this optical, on a Samsung that didn???t) and its a breeze to set up, configure and control from there.

Q
Will this improve the Line in sound of a CD player(Integra cdc3.4)connected to the new Sonos Amp currently connected with the rca connection? In other words will it improve the sample/bit rate connection via rca in to the Sonos Amp seems to make for a loss of detail
balooo2  Oct 10, 2019

A
Hi Ty, thank you for your question! Unfortunately, using this HDMI to Optical Adapter wouldn't be your best course of action. However, adding a DAC, like the Cambridge Audio DacMagic 100 to your system would provide you with the improved sound quality, and make up for the loss of detail you are experiencing. Chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695, any of our amazing team of Advisors will be happy to go over your options!
