Great integrated amp with elegant sound

Alex from Roswell, GA on 12/13/2024

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Needed an integrated amplifier for my office system to pair with B&W 805 d2 speakers. The room is small 13x13, wanted "one box" to limit clutter, had to be Roon Ready (yes, latest firmware made it Roon Ready), being able to provide detailed but non fatiguing sound with good bass and smooth highs, and did not want to spend more than $3000. Really enjoy this integrated amplifier, looks very good, quality is great. I previously tried the Marantz M1 and as much as it a great little box it sounded a bit too clinical with my speakers and bass was too lean for my taste (thank you Crutchfield for easy returns) the 40n sounds much more "analog" and smoother and fits more my taste. Bass is full and power rating is misleading as this amps performs very strongly with my B&W speakers which are known to be a bit power hungry, detail retrieval is great but again not harsh or too bright. An other comparison I can give is against some older gear I also tried consisting of separates Parasound P5+Parasound classic amp 150 watt, the 40n is more refined and balanced with better detail, and overall better imaging. I am used to McIntosh amps in my primary system and this sounds very similar even if just missing some little things in presence and of course power but also costs MUCH less. In short, I would recommend this integrated amplifier for anyone looking for an elegant and smooth sound in small to medium room, I am personally very happy with it.

Pros: Great quality Roon Ready Great smooth sound with excellent detail retrieval I like the way it looks

Cons: Of course it could have more power! But for how much more money? Heaps could be improved but due to the fact I mainly stream from Roon it does really affect me.

A Marantz for the modern age.

Austin from OWASSO, OK on 8/12/2024

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I'm really enjoying this amplifier. To my ears it's actually very similar to the warm and robust sound of the vintage gear I'm used to hearing. I'm using it for both 2 channel stereo listening and 2.1 home theatre and I've got a pair of Wharfedale Lintons & an SVS PB2000-pro hooked up to it and what can I say? It rocks the house! The modern features this amp possesses makes it a great option for someone like me who mostly uses it to listen to music but occasionally dabbles in movies/Tv shows.it's probably 80/20 for me. For most normal people, this could easily be an end-game amplifier. The 70 wpc on tap here is more than enough to drive my speakers to ear-drum shattering volumes so unless you have super inefficient, power hungry speakers I think this amp will be just fine. This amp, to the best of my knowledge, does not reset to a lower default volume when turned off and back on so if you have the volume cranked up for a movie and then you go to bed, wake up the next morning, connect to Spotify and press play, be ready to get jump-scared completely off your couch and spill your coffee everywhere with an unexpected blast of volume. So, check the volume before pressing play. For sources I'm strictly using digital streaming and Spotify connect has been flawless so far. The quality of digital streaming has gotten so good that it makes it hard to want to fool around with finicky vinyl. Overall, the 40n absolutely gets my recommendation.

Pros: Aesthetically pleasing design, great build quality, awesome sound, great features, ability to turn off front display lighting for movie night, satisfying relay clicks when powering the amp on & off.

Cons: These are super nit-picky things but only 1 subwoofer output. At this price, 2 would've been nice. Some kind of default volume reset to a lower volume when the amp is turned off would be nice.

Previous gear: 2.1 channel separates system with Marantz AV7703 and Parasound A23 amplifier. A23 failed and I wanted to switch from a separates system to an integrated to reduce clutter (and I need HDMI). Did a ton of research and settled on the 40n. I figured at best the 40n would sound about the same as my previous setup given I was using a Marantz preamp. I was wrong. Totally blown away by this thing. Deeper and more holographic soundstage and absolute control over my speakers drivers. This thing is a beast and I'm more than impressed.

Beautiful rich balanced sound. Phono stage is all you will ever need. Bass response is deep and powerful. 70 watts in this integrated amp is plenty of power. I use the Marantz 40n with Polk R600 tower speakers and a Polk 12 inch sub. Drives them with clean incredible sound with the volume all the way up to literally making anything in a 500 sqft room vibrate/buzz with no distortion. Even helps with sound acoustics in a less than perfect room setup. Comparing this amp to the Arcam Sa30 in the same room I don't need to use a room correction like Dirac Live. With the Arcam I had to use Dirac to cancel out very noticeable poor sound acoustics. Really an amazing integrated amp.

After reading reviews, I was interested in the Marantz model 40n and the Stereo 70s. The 70s was my assumed solution but I wanted to compare this to the much more expensive 40n. Looking at both up close, the 40n quality is so good. The features, amplifier design, obvious build quality, the weight, and the "made in Japan" stamp on the back all really impressed me. The setup also was so easy, especially using HEOS, as it just powers up automatically (better than the AVRs that usually need to be manually powered up using the app) and plays. The sound was the deal closer and after listening to it, I decided that you would need to pry the unit from my cold, dead fingers. Paired with an SVS 300 micro sub and Revel m105 speakers, this thing is just awesome. Rich, clean, and neutral sound that, honestly, I've never heard before. Familiar music has more detail and such a beautiful sound stage. As you may have guessed, the 70s was never opened and got sent back :)

Pros: Easy setup Beautiful design Great sound

Cons: Cost is above my budget so don't tell my wife No preamp outputs Lack of web interface for setup (all of my denon gear has a great web UI for setup and I miss this.) On top of the lack of the web interface, setup MUST be done through the remote, so don't lose it!

Solid, Heavy, Great Sound

William from Kailua Kona, HI on 1/29/2024

Verified employee review (What's this?)

The Marantz Model 40n is a solid two-channel receiver. It's really heavy, and everything about it exudes quality. It's pricey, and there are options out there for 1/2 the price that have similar sound, but not the look and feel that this unit (and its heavy remote control) have. My first firmware update took about 30 minutes, then failed. I had to reboot the unit and redo the firmware update. The second time, it only took about 10 minutes, and it worked! The HEOS streaming is great, and it works with both the HEOS app and the Amazon HD music app (among others). Highly recommended for two-channel sound where a ton of power isn't needed. I'm running this with the KEF R3 Metas, and it's a match made in heaven, IMHO.

Pros: Great Sound, Great Looks, Luxury Feel

Cons: Pricey, Heavy

Exellent streaming amplifier for music

Guest from Palm Beach Gardens. florida on 1/14/2024

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I bought the 40n recently along with B&W 703 S3 towers and the DB4S subwoofer. The Marantz is excellent when paired with the Bowers and Wilkins speakers. Set up was very easy for streaming music. I listen mostly to jazz. HDMI arc hookup to my 75 inch Samsung smart TV was easy but it doesn't always work. I have to unplug and plug back the HDMI cable which is annoying. However, I bought the Marantz mainly to listen to music so it is not a big concern for me. The amplifier is very big and very heavy and the display is rather small compared to other streaming amps.

Pros: Excellent sound quality, easy to set up.

Cons: Very heavy, display screen is tiny, HDMI arc hookup to a Samsung smart TV is inconsistent.

This receiver has exceeded my expectations. The build quality is amazing. Everything about it feels premium. The weight of the knobs and the construction of the chassis is a pleasure to the touch. Even the remote has a nice premium weight and feel to it. As for the sound - I am blown away. I am stepping up from an older Marantz 1402 that I was using in a stereo configuration. I wanted to upgrade to a proper 2 channel amp, and after months of research, I finally decided to pull the trigger on the 40n. It was between that and the PM7000N. I ultimately chose the 40n because of the HDMI ARC functionality that the 40n sports, since I use it for TV audio as well. I also prefer the newer look of the 40n over the older design aesthetic of the PM7000N. This amp has brought new life into my aging speakers. Originally I was going to upgrade them as well, but the 40n is able to bring tremendous depth and clarity out of them in a way that my older 1402 wasn't able to - so much so, that I am going to put off upgrading the speakers (for now). Phono stage sounds incredible. Very detailed, wide and warm. Throwing on Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" sounds like you are sitting live front row in a jazz club. The DAC for streaming is superb as well. I am only streaming Spotify and everything sounds spot on and detailed. I don't even think I'd be able to tell much of a difference between that and something lossy, like Tidal or Apple Music. If you have the budget for it, I h

Pros: Amazing sound and build quality.

Cons: None.

The marantz 40n arrived in perfect condition safely packed in 2 boxes. It is built like a tank, very heavy. The knobs, symmetrically arranged across the front are metal and of high quality. The sound, coming out if older b&w 805 Nautilus (120w max rated 8ohms) is warm but very clear. I can recommend crutchfield and Marantz 5 out of 5.

Just Add Speakers

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Truly a wonderful product. Just add speakers isn't a lie or a exaggeration. Top marks. Sonics: Runs my pair of Wharfdale EVO4.2s effortlessly and with panache. Coming from a Cambridge Audio AXR100, the difference is noticeable (as is the price difference so it better be) but I thought the AXR was good. I got to bust out the old cliche on my wife, "I've never heard that before in this song," many times. It is on the bleeding edge of perfect sonic recreation? No, and it isn't designed to be. It's designed to be able to play anything you want, clearly, cleanly, musically, and without fuss. And it does just that. Adjust the knobs, dial in the filters, set it and forget it. It really is that simple and effortless. Build Quality: Out-freakin-standing. It is drop dead gorgeous. Pictures don't do it justice. I have the black version and it's sexy. HEOS and Integration: HEOS set up was a bit fidgety for me using my Wi-Fi. After a few failed attempts I got off my rear end and used the WPS functionality of the system and it worked instantly. No problems since. HEOS connects to all your favorite stuff and the CEC/HDMI just works and works well.

Pros: Quality Quality Quality

Cons: None I've experienced

First time getting into audio 4/5, I don't have a reference point. Enjoyable experience paired with KEF R3s. Heos app leaves much to be desired therefore lost a star. Rare clipping when streaming through Heos over Wi-Fi. Still have much to explore with this device, such as home theater bypass and other music inputs.

Pros: Music sounds great. Easy to setup. Nice aesthetic.

Fantastic Amp

Fantastic, quality unit. I started with a Rotel A14. Turned it in and splurged for the Marantz. Very glad I did. You definitely get what you pay for. Although the Rotel was powerful, it did not have the audiophile sound the Marantz does. The Marantz has beautiful sound, fantastic depth and character. Loud volume sounds as equally as impressive. My Marantz is pushing a pair of Martin Logan 40I, and feeding signal to a pair of JL Audio Fathom F113. Cons. Heos app is not user friendly. Connecting to my wifi was cumbersome and took several attempts. The display is also very small.

Pros: Fantastic sound. Plenty of power. Has a sub output.

Cons: Heos app is not user friendly. Difficult to connect to internet. Small display.

Big bold sound

This purchase was a splurge to replace my Yamaha R-N602 network receiver. I liked all the features of the Yamaha, but the sound was just too bright for my taste. The features I gave up were AM/FM tuner, and bluetooth transmitter. Workarounds on the Marantz: HEOS app gives me access to free internet radio stations around the world. I did have to purchase a separate bluetooth transmitter, but that works seamlessly. Just connect the transmitter to the headphone jack, and that cuts off the wired speakers. I wanted that option so I can listen to wireless headphones without disturbing my partner in our small house. There was a minor glitch connecting the Marantz to my wireless network, solved by restarting the amp so it could install a firmware update. The amp's sound profile is much more to my liking--big, bold sound, with plenty of power for my Totem "Rainmaker" speakers, which have never sounded better. By far the best-sounding amp I have ever owned, highly recommended.

Pros: Great sound, easy to configure and operate. Wireless network capability plus easy to switch to analog sources such as phono and CD player

Cons: No bluetooth transmitter built-in

Sounds Great / Looks Fantastic

Darrell from Boise, ID on 3/1/2023

Verified employee review (What's this?)

What a great unit! I put this in my office, replacing a very old (>30 years) Sony receiver capable of only 30W. That Sony was using a Belkin Bluetooth receiver attached to the Tape input and playing through a pair of JBL speakers the same age. So just about anything was going to be an improvement, and what an improvement it is. The Marantz is playing through a pair of Buchardt S400 MKII speakers, with Tidal as the music source. It sounds and feels much newer than 30 years newer - it's a totally different world. The sound is clear and, as expected, warm with a great sound stage. My office is fairly large, with a high ceiling, and these more than fill it up. I have a bit of sound treatment in this room, and it almost equals my "real" setup in my listening room. I just about couldn't be happier with the sound, and it looks just as good. While the 40n lacks the display of, say, the Cambridge Evo line, I actually didn't want that, so I don't feel the lack. I wanted subdued good looks, and this device packs those in. Highly, highly pleased. Maybe I should mention that I also got and returned a Cambridge Evo150, as well as a Schiit pre-amp and a Schiit power amp with a BlueSound streamer. The Marantz is, to my ears, the better choice and I like not having cables running everywhere between components.

Pros: Size, power, sound, looks. Value compared to other all-in-one units.

Cons: Marantz does not support Apple Music or Amazon Music via the HEOS app. If I used either of those services I likely wouldn't have purchased it.

Sophisticated

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Sophisticated gear in a simple configuration. Exactly what I wanted and could not be happier. A Model 40n with a pair of KEF R3s and a KEF subwoofer. The room is about 500 SQFT normal ceilings - hardwood floors - no carpet. Every prior stereo system used individual components. I wanted a single box with full digital capability and audiophile quality for background music but work equally well cranked. Closing my eyes with most music, especially live concert music, I think the band is in my house for a personal concert. HEOS eliminates the need for a CD player, and I no longer play vinyl. No need for a NAS as HEOS plays any MP3 album from a PC, USB stick or phone. Plus, I don't need the Model 40n remote. If you have 4G/5G home Wi-Fi, your commands are quick from anywhere around your environment. Once volume approaches 30% or higher, I need to be in a different room anyway (I've had 400-Watt systems that weren't this powerful). Streaming is my next frontier and adding remote HEOS speakers around the house should be a treat. I agree setup is quirky, but stay with it because you only do it once. The small front info display isn't that important after setup. I suspect you'll gravitate toward the HEOS phone app anyway. If this is your price range and you want to future proof your gear, I recommend the Model 40n - you won't look back.

Pros: Quality, value, versatile, capable

Cons: Quirky setup

When my Emotiva amp began having issues with one of its channels, I started doing research on a replacement. This is for a garage set-up with a Samsung 75" QLED, 4 Def Tech in-walls and a Klipsch sub. Previously I was using the Emotiva with a Parasound New Classic 200 and a HEOS Link. I use the HEOS system a lot mostly for streaming music to numerous locations from my Sony HAP Z1-ES. While some folks aren't a fan of HEOS I find it works great for my needs and I rarely ever have any issues with it. Yes the app could be better. I've had pretty good luck with Denon/Marantz products over the years so the 40n was an easy option. I chose the black finish and I think it's a very good looking pre/amp. Sort of old school with a new school look. It's extremely well made and quite heavy. Set-up was simple and connecting the unit to WiFi via the HEOS app worked exactly as designed. The HDMI input and switching works perfectly without a glitch every time. Putting the 40n into the equation allowed me to get rid of the Emotiva, Parasound and Denon Link. The unit does everything so much better and has plenty of power. I rarely run it over "40". I personally like the small porthole design. Yes it's expensive but I think it's well engineered and worth it. Highly recommended. Note: Crutchfield lists it at 19" deep and about 24 lbs. Not sure where they got these figures but it's more like 17" deep and 44 lbs.

Pros: Exceptional build quality, looks great, sounds very good, easy set-up, plenty of inputs, HDMI works perfectly, excellent remote, faceplate ambient lighting, warm Marantz sound

Cons: Could use another HDMI input, balanced inputs would be nice, has LPF needs HPF too, volume memory and custom naming for each input would be a nice feature

Crutchfield response on 1/25/2023
Hi Randy, thanks for providing such a detailed review! We're sorry for any confusion our measurements may have caused. We list a 19" depth to account for the power cord and other cables. We make this adjustment to make things a little easier for folks installing the unit in tighter spaces. We measured product itself weighing in at approximately 36.8 lbs. The 44 lbs. in question is the item's shipping weight including the box and packaging. I hope this helps clear things up a bit! If you have any other questions, just let us know!

As the old expression goes, 'You get what you pay for'. Right out of the box you'll notice that this thing is HEAVY and stunningly beautiful. Even at $2500 the Model 40n punches above it's price point. It also pairs brilliantly with the Marantz cd 60. Put on an old favorite like Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue' or Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' and be prepared to hear them as you've never heard them before. This amp is also incredibly compelling with classical music and movie scores. Hans Zimmer will pin you to the wall. The built in phono stage is marvelous as well. So good in fact that I put my trusty ol' tube pre-amp away for now. Depth. Separation. Soundstage. They're all here in spades. This baby really sings. I can listen to it for hours and it's not fatiguing on the ears. If Marantz is your sound then just get it. This is the last amplifier I'm ever going to buy. A big thank you to the entire team at Crutchfield. You were all tremendously helpful.

I have been impressed by this amplifier! Built like a tank! I bought this since my old Rotel died. I'm using this to drive a pair of Tannoy X8TF and B&W703s and the amp has been more than capable to drive both the speakers (the 703s are not that efficient generally). Love the connectivity through HEOS. The DAC is great and has very good spaciality to the sound even with my CD player. I'm leaning towards the Filter 1 setting for the DAC more as I like the sound better with that setting. Although very beautiful, don't have to use the remote much as most things can be controlled thought the HEOS app. It's a keeper!

Let me preface this by saying I've only got about 3 hours on this amp; it's no where near broken in. So far, pretty good. This amp has very good bass control and dynamics. The soundstage is wide and deep but the overall sound lacks the 3 dimensional liquid "presence" compared to my 45 WPC class A tube amp. The sound is on the warm side of neutral but definitely more arid. It has a quiet, black background, but just lacks that air and space that my tube amp provides. The phono preamp is fantastic and compared to my tube amp / phono preamp combo is much less compressed. The sound is fuller with again, way better dynamic control in the lower octaves. Streaming via Bluetooth and HEOS has been easy and the sound is pretty good but not quite CD/WAV file good. I'm looking forward to seeing how the sound opens up over time from break in and cable tweaks.

Pros: Enjoy

Marantz Model 40n

This thing sounds nothing short of spectacular. Replaced my amp, streamer, and phono preamp with this one unit and it sounds FANTASTIC. Solid, full bass (but not overpowering) and crystal clear, fast response across the full spectrum. I mainly stream from Spotify which is seamless and sound quality is at least on par with my previous streaming box (Bluenode 2i). The phono preamp is dead quiet and is not a compromised like many in-built preamps. I would give it 5 stars, were it not for the HEOS app that is so-so (but adequate), and out of the box there were a couple hiccups during setup with a couple back to back firmware upgrades of the unit. Overall this unit feels like a bargain at this price point.

Pros: Sound quality, ease of streaming, phono preamp, USB audio port, price point

Cons: Heos

Marantz 40n review

The Marantz 40n was very easy to set up and operate. I have been streaming music and tv , and have been very pleased with the sound quality. When I press the on button on my tv remote the 40n starts up as well, I find this very convenient. The remote that came with the 40n is very substantial. I tip my hat to Marantz, the 40n a very good product. -SW

Pros: Easy to set up and operate. Good sound quality. Reasonable price.

Cons: An instruction manual for the remote would be helpful.
