Not cheap but a great unit . Nice compact size, good sound, plenty of power and has all the hook ups to work on my gear from my Apple TV to my legacy Bowers and Wilkins bookshelf speakers and subwoofer. Perfect solution for my cigar lounge!

Pros: Compact, HDMI, optical, RCA's and a sub out. Good sound

Cons: $$$ pricey, no remote, must use the HEOS app

Generally, I like the M1 as a one box solution. Relatively small form factor with ample and clean power. Like many, my experience with Heos is that it is "good enough." That said, the M1 provides easy access to the streaming platforms I use, such as Apple and Tidal. I also appreciate setting both high and low pass filters--something I have not found on similar units. Moreover, I appreciate the "virtual" setting for the tv input. For me this was among the keys to enjoying a one box solution. My experience thus far is that the unit's tonal characteristic leans toward "bright." Good detail but approaches fatigue when using High-Res platforms like Tidal. Just to test what might happen, I ran my Cambridge Audio streamer (with internal dac) into the M1's analog and digital inputs simultaneously. Let me preface this by saying I understand that the MI digitizes information from the analog input. Nevertheless, when switching between the two inputs the analog sound profile was noticeably smoother, that is, balanced, than was the digital but with as much detail retrieval. Interestingly, the digital input had a higher gain than did the analog. Of course, taking this route somewhat defeats one of the primary purposes of using a one box solution. Nevertheless, if, like me you find the M1's sonic profile on High-Res platforms a bit too "forward sounding," exploring such options may be useful.

Worth Considering Where Space Is An Issue

Holy Crap!!!!!!!!!! You can hold this little sucker in one hand but that is the only thing that is small. Paired with Linton Heritage speakers and WHALA . All the stuff that audiophile's rave about and get off on. All I know is that I now here "stuff" I didn't hear before from my vast cd collection. My main issue was that my wife only allowed me a small shelf in the living room if I wanted those speakers next to the fireplace. Thanks Marantz , problem solved ! Happy wife/Happy life. My Yamaha R-N 1000A has a nice spot in the man cave with my Klipsch Floor standing Heritage series giants.

Pros: All Good

Cons: Can't think of any yet

Nicer pairing KEF LS50 metas.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This little amp has really made my KEF LS50 Metas sing. I'm currently about a week in and I'm very impressed. I have an emotiva basx stack that I'm considering replacing with this amp. Tough decision ahead. Clear and meaty presentation with well defined sound stage. Integrated easily with my sub for those banging house tracks. Running an nad cd player(optical) and a fluance tt/schitt mani2 (rca) into it as well. No complaints.

Pros: Price for performance

Cons: The app loses connection if I try to connect from my iPad. Then I have to physically unplug amp for either my phone or iPad to control the amp again. Could be deal breaker as others from WiiM, bluesound etc have very reliable apps.

I truly love this amp. It's a great package deal with it's connectivity , power and integral streaming via the HEOS app. The app does take a while to understand and become user friendly but once you're there you fly. I feel like someone needs to write a good HEOS usage summary instead of the pointless video they put out (hint) and its reputation for being clunky and non intuitive would largely be mitigated. Class D, but not sterile at all, great sound profile , for whatever that may mean to you. For me it simply sounds amazing paired with a set of Ascend Sierra series 1 / V2s (sans sub woofer in a 290 sq foot room). Put on Massive Attack Mezzanine, give it some juice and prepare to be astounded. I listen to this in my work studio 10 to 12 hours a day, beautiful , smooth ,coherent sound you can listen to all day long. At 2k for the whole set up I cant' imagine anything as a better package; convenient, compact, efficient and, as I said, throw 60% of this amp at the 1/V2s and you'll be a believer.

The little engine that could

Sounds is excellent, which makes it tough for me to pull a star but... Not having a room correction software is a huge negative. At least let me set the high pass for a sub woofer! I knew this going into the buy, which doesn't completely make it fair. Yet, hopefully that someone at Marantz who reads reviews will shoot up a flare someday on this decision. Using this to run KEF Q7 Metas and SVS 3000 Micro, and boy is it an incredible combination. Using in a medium/large, oblong room. I'd love to A/B this with the Dennon version to see if the Marantz up brand is worth the $300 extra. I believe the Marantz is supposed to have a different DAC from the Dennon, but just be aware it exist. Overall, I'm very pleased with the buy. Purchased this over the Dennon and the NAD C 3050 BluOS-D, which time will tell if it was a good choice

Pros: -First and foremost, the sound. -Virtual mode is great for a 2.1/2.0 setup with movies and TV. -EARC works great so far which is my primary source for audio. -HEOS is alright too. I was expecting some issues with how polarizing the reviews are for heos, but it works fine for me. -Size is just amazing. No having to measure inside dimensions with this little jewel.

Cons: - No sound correction options; Even if it were a paid option, that would be fine. Just give me a programmable DAC, Marantz. (Or the possibility of using your own inside the signal chain.) Would pay $300-400 extra for this option - A little too minimalistic: power has like six states, which all depends on the LED pattern/color. I just listen for the relay to know if it's on or off.

Using this amp to drive a pair of Sonus Faber Lumina II. The amp is a small form factor which I really like, and it still produces plenty of power for my bookshelf speakers. I can listen at a comfortably loud volume at only 50%. The virtual mode for Dolby Digital content is a cool feature that I occasionally use. HEOS app is okay, a little clunky but not the end of the world

Pros: Amazing sound and plenty of power to drive bookshelf speakers

Cons: HEOS app, not a dealbreaker but not the best if you are used to another platform

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Knowing the power in watts it is rated at I was surprised at its size and how powerful it sounds. It is an amazingly clean and clear sounding unit. I am more than impressed with this amplifier. My generation grew up on Receivers, tapes, CD's, and record players. All this other streaming stuff is intimidating. It was relatively easy though, to figure out the HEOS app and get the amplifier operating. I use it to power some speakers (Klipsch floor standing) that are connected to my receiver. My speakers actually sound clearer with this amp and sound even better when you crank it up. I may not have taken a chance on this smallish amplifier ($$) if it was not for Crutchfield's return policy. This unit is worth every dollar I spent for it and will not be returning it. Very satisfied with this purchase.

Pros: Easy to set up hardware wise and with HEOS.

Cons: Keeping a clean appearance. It has that rugged soft rubbery outer cover that's tricky to clean.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This is a really nice unit from Marantz. I bought it to help blend more movie/TV in with my 2ch listening and the virtual modes work great to enhance movies. It has a very clean and direct sound with quick bass and all the power you could want with music. I put my Roksan Attessa back in my system after about 3 weeks and the Roksan shows why it costs quite a bit more though not night and day. There is a bigger sound in in the mids/bass on the Roksan with more resolution in the highs as well. All in all I prefer the Roksan but was not disappointed at all with the M1. The Heos app though. Ugh. BluOs is much smoother to use.

Pros: HDMI ARC. Ample power. Easy to place. Nice subwoofer control.

Cons: HEOS system. Slight metallic sounding overhang on some sources. Thin upper mids.

I have owned my M1 for 2 months. I have it pushing 2 Focal Evo X No. 4's, pretty much as a soundbar-ish setup. I use my TV as a "preamplifier". Pandora and movies for large master bedroom entertainment. Please don't underestimate the power, clarity, and ease of use with this unit. Love the virtual mode. 5 stars

Pros: Powers Focal Evo X No. 4's

Cons: If you just want to watch the TV without the amp being on, you have to either unplug it or hold down the play/pause button for 5 or 6 seconds to neutralize the amplifier.

Marantz M1 makes home audio easy

David from Davis, CA on 11/3/2024

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I'm driving a pair of Klipsch RP-500M bookshelf speakers. The M1 is also connected via HDMI and TOSLINK to my LG TV. Setup was super easy. Downloaded the HEOS app, which quickly recognized and connected to both the M1 and the Spotify, Pandora and SiriusXM on my phone: pretty much Plug 'n' Play. The M1 is preprogrammed to recognize the IR volume up/down signals from most common TV remotes, so my remote can control the system's volume whether the TV is on or off. When the TV is turned on the M1 automatically switches to TV input, eliminating the need for a sound bar. The system sounds great, with clear, detailed highs, mids and bass. I'll update this review after I've connected the Klipsch powered subwoofer I have on order, but even without a sub, I'm impressed with the bass. 100 watts RMS continuous per channel is more than I need, driving the Klipsch speakers in my listening space. As a streaming amplifier, the M1 takes digital audio signals directly from my network, TOSLINK, HDMI, or a USB thumb drive, and amplifies through an all-digital signal path. Analog signals input through the RCA inputs would be converted to digital. The HEOS app is a bit clunky, but I quickly got used to it. To run Spotify, HEOS opens Spotify Connect in a separate window. At that point, Spotify runs just like usual on my phone. When streaming Spotify, Pandora, SiriusXM, or other streaming services, the actual digital audio signal to the M1 comes from the network - n

Pros: Great sound, as expected from Marantz. Easy setup. All streaming services easily accessible through the HEOS app.

Cons: The rubber-feeling coating on the amplifier case seems similar to coatings on other devices I've had which became sticky after a few years. I hope that won't happen on the M1. The HEOS app is clunky. HEOS provides simple Bass/Treble/Subwoofer level tone controls. Although the frequencies of the high- and low-pass filters for the subwoofer output are adjustable through HEOS, there is no further DSP capability.

Marantz magic for streamers

James from Traverse City, MI on 9/2/2024

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

This is certainly not like Marantz Amps i owned in the 70's and 80's, but that seems to be the point with the M1. I needed an amp with a small foot print and enough power for my Sonus Faber Illuminati II speakers. Truth be told the Marantz magic is strong with this unit. The depth and breadth of sonic pleasure this creates is spot on! The virtual mode is an exceptional feature. In terms of performance I simply couldn't ask for more. Unfortunately, this is a streaming amp which means operationally all controls are through the HEOS app. It operates much like a computer, which means long transitions between modes and at start up. You can't really turn it off except for deep sleep mode, but wake up is slow. I eventually returned it and went with the LEAK 130. If you're okay with the app control you'll really love this amp.I tried, but being an analog guy at heart this was a bridge too far.

Pros: Exceptional sonic performance . definitely has the Marantz magic. Lots of power!

Cons: All controls are app based (HEOS).

A Power Packed Monster Under $1000

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This little amp has been an absolute joy over these last few weeks. I brought the Marantz into my home to test its Dolby Virtualization and ability to drive speakers with ease. From my testing, streaming music was a breeze once I got HEOs tied in with my streaming services. The warmth that Marantz is known for was present front and center as I enjoyed a plethora of tracks from my test list on a pair of Wharfdale EVO 4.2's. When it came to the movie side of things, I ran the audio through a 2.1 setup with both Klipsch and SVS setups as I prefer them more for a dynamic movie experience and the virtualization settings on board were great. My room is on the smaller side being a 12x14 space but I was able to squeeze parts of the track I can only get with a full setup. The surround imaging for me was a bit on the weaker side but the height imaging and dialogue clarity from a 2.1 speaker setup was phenomenal. The weakest part of the experience was the HEOs app in the opening week and I had random bouts of the Marantz just shutting itself off in the middle of a movie. After doing some research, I decided to do a hard reset on the unit and shortly after, HEOs dropped an update and the issue never came back. If you are looking for a great sounding 2.1 system in a small package, this one to date has been my favorite experience. 10/10 would use again!

I took a gamble on this one, my amp finally failed after 14 years and the wife (family) was sick of manually turning the volume up/down. Now my tv remote controls the volume with ARC, I have upgraded Polk 2.3TL's and never thought I would be happy with only 100w @ 8 ohm. I was wrong...It is crystal clear! Watching Game of Thrones series again, its a whole new show with the details this amp brings out. I did lose my awesome low end bass of course, that is not Marantz issue, that is just the size of the speakers attached to this unit. If they ever make a 300w @ 8 ohm version, this would change everything audiophiles know about their systems. I am adding two 12" powered subs to get by, maybe a few years from now there will be a bigger unit I can plug and play to get my large Polk's fed properly. The costs of pre-amps and amps are insane, this is a great solution for those that keep it simple with a 2 channel stereo set-up. I am super impressed and honestly shocked it is what it is, seems to be braking in after a week and smoothing out sound wise. If your on the fence and don't care about particular apps it can and can not support, this is something to consider for sure.

Pros: -Crystal Clear -Easy Set-up -Small and only 5 lbs

Cons: -Not enough power for Vintage Large speakers, make a 300w @8 Ohm version and you will get the attention of old school Audiophiles. -NEED more EQ options, hoping that is something that can be upgraded in the app.

Solid Streaming Amp with Great Sound

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Was initially skeptical in the value of this unit though I wanted more than a budget streaming amp after trying a couple. It has turn out for the best. Audio quality is awesome, just enough audio inputs for my needs, and fits neatly in the limited space I have for the unit. I'm new to HEOS though that's proven to be far less of an issue than expected. In fact, the new HEOS app is very good in my opinion. The ability to search across various music platforms and services is also pretty cool. If you want a higher end streaming amp experience, this could the one.

Pros: Sound quality, variety audio inputs

Cons: Pricey, gotta like the HEOS app
