Keep your trunk space and get good bass
Geoffrey from ROUND ROCK, TX on 1/15/2025

XJ pod fit very nicely. I used 4mm cell foam mat vs the included egg crate foam and have no vibration. The sub I went with is a Rockford Fosgate P3S-D28. The only issue I ran into was not being able to use the included mesh grille or the RF grille.
Pros: Takes up minimal space in trunk. Very durable hard plastic
Cons: Not all subs are compatible with the included grille. Not all grilles are compatible with this enclosure

Money Excellently Spent!
Kameron from Wentzville on 1/12/2024
1995 Jeep Cherokee
Installed this in my 96, and it's a perfect fit! Pairs well with dual voice coil kicker subs such as the Kicker 44CWCD84. It is 0.1ft² undersized, but you'll never notice the difference. To truly have the best experience, ditch the foam pads and pick up some $20 sound insulation like Dynamat or a generic, you won't regret it. The unit comes with a steel mesh grille to prevent damage to the sub. There's an easy access cable hole in the bottom that lets you easily run 4 10-gauge wires, so you can really go all out. It does hard mount to the body panel, so make sure you're certain before purchasing. I don't regret this purchase in the slightest, I actually wish I hadn't waited so long. I have an amazing sound system, while maintaining my precious cargo space!
Pros: -Saves cargo space -Steel mesh cover for protection -Cable holes holds 2 sets of 10-gauge wire
Cons: -Hard mounts to plastic paneling, so removal would leave damage

Nice little box. Depending on your setup or if your Jeep has been messed with, you'll want to get some Dynamat for behind the stock body panel and for behind this box. Mine installed pretty easily but the mounting/drilling hole locations they want you to use aren't the easiest to get to while still trying to hold the box in place, but if you're able to get one or two started, you should be fine.

Good Product All Around

110% recommend this product. Looks clean in our jeep, we paired ours with a Memphis power reference 8 inch sub with our power acoustic amp and it sounds GOOD! Only thing I would point out is the raised writing but it doesn't bother us! 10/10 recommend.
Pros: Everything!
Cons: So far not a single one.

Installed in just a few hours. Followed advice of others. Dynamat on exterior, did not use the egg crate foam. Paired a Kicker 8" subwoofer with a Kicker mono amplifier. No rattle and exceptional bass. Kenwood head unit. Stock Infinity amplifier is powering the front and rear speakers, also Kicker. Like a new sound system. Highly recommended.
Pros: Easy install and doesn't take up any room in the cargo area.
Cons: Don't like the XJ Pod raised letters on the box exterior.

If you want something cheapish that doesn't take allot of cargo room in an XJ this is ok choice. Fitment is not the best I will need do something about the top left side it sticks out. Also I wish there were brass thread inserts to screw sub into instead of plastic.
Pros: Save on cargo, metal grille
Cons: Fitment, speaker mounting material

Fit the Alpine S-W8D4 perfect could have had a bigger mesh screen protector did fit my sub. Needs more foam depending on your bass setups. I also added more nits and bolts to hold it down just because im a moderately off-road. As well as daily on about 15 miles of dirt road every day? Other than that fits perfectly. Would buy again or recommend to friends.
Pros: Fits like a glove
Cons: Mesh screen was to small I think it needs better mounting options depending on what you use your vehicle for.

This product has a solid, stiff housing. Does not flex as some cheaper boxes do. The fit is exceptional and follows the factory panel lines perfectly. The install is easy and straight forward. I do recommend that you attach a sound deadening material to the areas behind the box and behind the factory panel also, I did not use the supplied foam.

Works great and good fit. I wish the description would just tell you to use Dynamat. I installed it without it and the sound sucked. the egg foam that comes with made it stick out and not look good. I read another review after I installed it talking about using Dynamat so I took it all apart and re-installed it and wow! what a difference.

Perfect place for that bass!
Graham from Montrose, CO on 11/15/2018
1998 Jeep Cherokee
The XJ-Pod is brilliant! In my 1998 Jeep Cherokee, it completely overhauled the soundstage. 1) read the instructions--it'll prevent headaches and sound loss (or add rattles) if not followed. 2) buy a box of sound deadening mat, 80mil, 10 sq ft. 3) be sure to take off the plastic quarter panel and line the inside of the metal quarter panel with the mat. Then, add pieces to the back side of the plastic quarter panel as well. Use a heat gun if you're working in the cold to warm up the mat(and CLEAN all surfaces with some Simple Green to ensure good adhesion PRIOR to applying--use a roller). Don't put that mat away yet! Once you get the quarter panel back on, line the backside of the XJ Pod. BE SURE to mount mat between the Pod and the quarter panel contact points. Why? Because if you use the egg crate foam that comes with the Pod, it'll cause it to stick way out from the quarter panel and just look crappy. You'll get a tighter, more finished look if you ONLY use the mat. After that's done, follow the manufacturer's instructions and complete the install. Other reviewers complained about the grill not fitting over their sub. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS: the grill mount (metal ring) goes over the sub, facing UP, so the grill can pop onto the metal mount ring. I installed an 8" Kicker CompR43CWR84, and everything installed perfectly. And the bass is beyond my expectations! Wish I'd done this install when I first bought my Jeep. Do it right,
Pros: Great fit--out of the way of your cargo space. Solid construction. Easy install. An 8" sub will give you plenty of bass when paired with the right amp, such as a Kicker's 43CXA300.1.
Cons: Only in black, it'd be nice to have some colors that match Jeep plastic gray, brown, etc. The included egg-crate foam will push Pod way from quarter panel--don't use it! Use sound deadening mat instead for a tighter fit and finish.

XJ Cherokee pod
Jackson from Escondido, CA on 5/19/2018

Unless you want to spend a huge amount of money having a custom box made for this space in the XJ Cherokee, this pod which is molded is the way to go. It does require a shallow speaker, It holds an 8 inch sub. I mounted it right with Dinah Matt completely It holds an 8 inch sub. I mounted it right with Dyna Mat completely lining the interior space, Then mounted it according to the directions. It was fairly easy to do it correctly. I am very satisfied with the results it throws plenty of bass in my jeep, especially for rock 'n' roll I do not really play hip-hop or rap. Super happy with this piece from Crutchfield.
Pros: Very easy to install, and fits the space perfectly.
Cons: It's not really a con, but the space behind the pod should be aligned with Dyna mat.

Easy Install, Sounds Great!
Michael from Cincinnati, OH on 1/22/2018
2001 Jeep Cherokee
I was pleasantly surprised by how well this turned out. Based on previous reviews I was expecting vibrations and limited bass. After following the directions exactly the pod installed extremely tight limiting any possible vibration from the pod itself to zero. I did notice after my initial install that the speaker wire inside the pod was vibrating which I quickly corrected by tightening up the length of wire inside as well as stuffing the inside of the pod with polyester fiber fill (the same stuff in many pillows). I cant stress enough how important it is to use the correctly sized sub and adequate amp with this pod. After a bit of research I went with the Polk Audio DB840 sub because of its good reviews and it only needs a sealed box volume of 0.35 cu ft. I would also recommend that your head unit be replaced with one that allows you to adjust speaker levels and has a high pass filters for the front, rear and a low pass filter for the sub. Overall this setup turned out very nice and cost very little.
Pros: Easy install. Sounds great. Looks great.
Cons: Need to fill the inside of the pod with polyester fiber fill or its equivalent for the best sound. Limited box volume limiting choices in subs.

Fits perfectly. Depth is great for location. If necessary, material able to be cut wider but still has structural integrity (although I'm sure that would good any company warranty that may be purchased). Strong, durable, and easy to install. Only wish the dampening was more than just sheet foam, but they sell dampeners that fit at a good price as well. The only reason it's not 5 stars is out of personal preference that 5 stars is for going above and beyond. This product does it's job perfectly. You must make it above and beyond.

I installed this box in my nephew's Jeep Cherokee along with some additional speaker upgrades and a Kenwood head unit. He is now a hit among his friends with the best sounding stereo system. Definitely buy some Dynamat and install generously to avoid any rattling. As always, Crutchfield's customer service was A+++!!
Pros: Doesn't take up much room and allows you to maintain your cargo space.
Cons: Speaker grill isn't universal. Some modifications may be necessary.

I got this box thinking it would be great to add some necessary bass to my xj while maintaining hatch storage space, I installed the box with a 250rms infinity sub and it rattles and vibrates like crazy. After dynamatting and adding several additional screws it helped a little but still not impressed, ended up buying a normal 8inch sealed enclosure for a third of the price

This hard plastic pod fits perfectly in the cargo area crevice. Mounting it was a little difficult. You get 6 sheet metal screws to attach it to the interior panel. It only secures the suboofer area of the pod. The pointy front of the pod just sits there. It might rattle when I put my sub in it. Idk yet. Other than that it is exactly what you think it is when you open the box.
Pros: Perfect fit, nice accessories
Cons: Mounting a little difficult, might rattle when sub is installed.

If you install it per the instructions, you won't have any rattles (I don't). I went one step further and installed dynamat behind the interior panel. I installed the dynamat everywhere I could see metal after I removed the panel that the enclosure mounts to. The one issue/complaint I have is the foam dampening material (looks like egg crate foam) that comes with the enclosure doesn't allow the enclosure to fit quite right into the interior panel. I may have to do some cutting of the visible dampening material. I would suggest cutting the dampening material that comes with the enclosure into smaller pieces. Other than that, it is working great and doesn't take up any room. I have a Sound Ordanance 8" 4 ohm sub with a sound Ordanance 1350 mono-block amp (210x1 @ 4 ohms) and it sounds lovely! I have an Alpine CDE-153BT CD Receiver providing the smarts. To fit the sub, I had to clearance the opening of this enclosure a little bit. I used a deburring tool (looks like a pencil), which has a sharp curved edge. I went around the opening until the sub fit just right.
Pros: Does the job
Cons: Fit using dampening material that comes with the box isn't perfect (user error?).

great product
bryan from holland, mi on 3/14/2014
I read all the reveiws before installing to see some of the downsides to this box. most of the complaints were not that the speaker sound was bad but the rattling from flimsy install directions and the vibration thru the entior panels was the issues. i first removed the factory interior pannel and taped plastic to the inside fender wall. i took the xj pod and used a whole tube of cylicone to cover the whole back side of the pod then screwed the xj pod into the enterior panel and let it dry. i cyliconed the out side edge of the pod to the panel as well, i used four cans of expanding foam and sprayed the plastic i put on the inside fender and allowed the foam to expand and dry between layers before i put the enterior panel back in with xj pod attatched. i did have to cut some of the foam back for a snug fit. i am using a infinity 8" referance with a 200 watt rms infinity amp and it sounds great. the only vibration i get is from the front enterior dome light above my head.. it was all worth the few hrs in a weekend total for the cylicone and multiple layers of foam to set. i can tell you i have plenty of bass as my out side and inside mirrors shake and it sounds clear.....i would only recomend this box if you are willing to put in the extra work to avoid the issues of vibration and rattling.....i would recomend to use the corect speaker for the sealed enclosure size as well. as i stated earlier it is a good box and i am very pleased with it.
Pros: good sounding box overall with the right speaker, components and a little extra work to ensure quality bass.
Cons: installation for good sound takes more work than what people may be willing do.

Clean, tight bass
Adam from Fresno, CA on 12/1/2009
After reading the other reviews about rattles from this box, I decided to go overboard on the sound dampening. I used Dynamat on the inside of the box, as well as on the hidden side of the plastic panel, and the inside of the sheet metal in the back corner. I also used weatherstrip on the backside of all plastic parts in that corner of the vehicle, then put polyester fiberfill in the cavity behind the panel. I installed a JBL GTO804 and hooked it up to an Infinity Kappa Five amp. I have clean, loud bass with all types of music from rap to classical, and rock to techno. Beautiful sound.

3 stars for sound, 5 for utility
Curtis from College Station Texas on 10/19/2008

Lets face it the basic concept is: lets mount a single sub expected to fill a medium sized suv cabin with sound to a thin piece of plastic in the back corner. It is IMPOSSIBLE to put a powerful sub into something like this without getting rattling. that being said, the box is .40 cubes, which means that aside from the rattle its a near perfect match to my 8" polk momo sub as far as size goes, and the bass is tight and clean(if occasionally dirtied by plastic rattling), it only rattles on extremely strong, low notes, especially sudden ones like strong kickdrums. All in all, its at a major acoustic disadvantage compared to a traditional box, but mount it carefully and securely, and dont expect to run more than 250 watts to the sub in it, and it'll do exactly what it claims, fill in the bass (which the tiny 5 1/4 factory speaker mounts assure you dont have) without filling your trunk. side note: the polk momo 8" sub has performed beautifully as has the profile 65Wx2 amp bridged to power it.

Better than expected
Matthew from MN on 1/27/2008
I purchased this box with relatively low expectations given the review that was previously made for this product. I have to say that it more than exceeded my expectations and was the right product for my needs. I compared this product to the Infinity Basslink II, which is a fantastic unit, but found this box (with an Infinity reference 8" sub and rockford amp) to be the perfect compliment to my infinity system (6020cs & 5022i). It does not produce bone shattering bass but adds a kick to my sound system. I did not want to be heard a block away. The sound is contained within the vehicle and the box is barely noticeable in the trunk. I would rate this box a 5, but the instructions included with the unit were less than helpful, the manner in which it attaches to the panel is awkward and flimsy, and it does have a tendancy to rattle the panel on certain notes at higher volumes (it is very minor and would probably be remedied by applying dynamat, which I plan to do when it warms up outside). Besides those minor problems, I am very pleased with this unit. If I could do it all over, I would still purchase this unit.

Disappointed
dj strict from Saugus, MA on 9/26/2006
2001 Jeep Cherokee
Unfortunately, the truth is it's just not a great design. A really great idea- but not logical. I was looking to installing some power into this enclosure to save space as I'm always using my cargo space for my business, (and got a little tired of lugging the dual 12" bandpass box in and out everytime I needed the room,) but this enclosure just can't handle decent power without vibrations. I knew there was an existing possibility of getting some rattling when installing a sub in this box, so I took the time to apply Dynamat to the entire metal body behind the factory panel, along with some additional sound proofing between the enclosure itself, and the plastic cargo panel it was being attached to. (In addition to the foam inserts and wraps that come with the enclosure.) Running a mono Alpine amp into an 8" 200w RMS Polk Momo subwoofer, (an amazing subwoofer I learned with this project, by the way!) it was just too powerful to pound out of the XJ pod. The unit was secure, but even after a second attempt of securing it with the screws in different mounting positions, this one corner of the pod in particular was vibrating beyond belief. I would say it MAY be possible to mount the pod with minimal vibrations, but would suggest possibly considering even more sound dampening than I used, (and that was what I thought would be enough precautionary measures,) mount it differently than using the supplied self-tapping screws, or possibly just using a lower rated subwoofer. I tried, but returned it... just have to stick with the task of moving the bandpass from time to time. It was discouraging though, as it did look really neat and clean, matching the interior perfectly.
