About the JBL L100 Classic MkII

Archer A.

A revised JBL classic

The original L100 came out in 1970, and it became the best-selling speaker in JBL's history. A few years ago, the company released their popular L100 Classic, a modern take on that vintage speaker. This new L100 Classic MkII version offers slight improvements to make a great speaker even better. It has that same iconic JBL styling, but its upgraded drivers and crossovers deliver even better performance across the board.

It has that same iconic JBL styling, but its upgraded drivers and crossovers deliver even better performance across the board.

3-way driver layout for exceptional separation

The L100 Classic MkII uses a three-way driver layout that's very similar to the original. It's made up of a huge 12" cast-frame Pure Pulp woofer, a 5-1/4" polymer-coated Pure Pulp midrange, and a 1" titanium dome tweeter. All the drivers have benefitted from some tweaking since the last iteration. The woofer now has a better, more efficient motor structure with dual spiders, the midrange has a rigid cast basket, and the tweeter uses a custom acoustic lens and waveguide. The net result is smoother response with lower distortion.

An updated crossover network delivers improved soundstaging and imaging. And JBL has kept the high- and mid-frequency attenuators on the front baffle, which let you dial in the highs and mids to better match your room.

3-Way Driver Design: The JBL L100 Classic MK2 loudspeaker utilizes a 3-way driver configuration featuring a 1" titanium dome tweeter mated to an acoustic lens waveguide, 5.25" polymer-coated pure-pulp cone midrange driver, and a 12" pure-pulp cone bass woofer with a dual-spider suspension. The L100 Classic MK2 Loudspeaker delivers room-filling, full-range sound with exceptional dynamic range and detail, clean and effortless high output, and precise deep bass with low distortion.

Controls & Adjustments: The L100 Classic MK2 has front-panel adjustments that let you balance the levels of the midrange driver (MF) and tweeter (HF) relative to the woofer. You can use these controls to adjust the speaker's sound according to your room's acoustics, or your personal taste. The "0dB" default position is a good place to start. Whatever sounds best to you in your room is the right setting. As with most speakers, after you start playing the L100 Classic MK2 it will take the drivers' suspensions several weeks to "break in" and achieve optimum performance. During this period, the balance between the woofer, midrange, and tweeter may change, so JBL recommends that you adjust the midrange and tweeter controls again after the break-in period.

Note: The front-panel control adjustments are located behind the Quadrex foam grille. There is also a protective plastic film on the front control panel label that needs to be removed.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The JBL L100 Classic MK2 loudspeaker employs a bass reflex enclosure with a front-firing port for higher efficiency and bigger bass response. The enclosure is finished in walnut veneer with a black, blue, or orange Quadrex foam grille.

Dual Binding Posts: The JBL 100 Classic MK2 is equipped with two sets of  gold-plated binding post terminals allowing you to bi-amp or bi-wire the floorstanding loudspeaker. These gold-plated binding posts ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors, while provide excellent audio signal transfer and resistant to corrosion. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-lugs, and bare wire (up to 10AWG).

  • Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier (the upper set of binding posts are for the high frequency drivers; the lower set of binding posts are for the low frequency drivers).
  • Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.
Note: If you decide to bi-wire or bi-amp, you must remove the jumpers between the terminal posts (failure to do this could result in damage to your amplifier and loudspeakers).

Mounting & Placement Options: The L100 Classic MK2 may be stand mounted with the included JBL JS-120 metal stand that angle the speaker upward. If not using the optional stands with built-in angle, then JBL recommends you to position each speaker so that its tweeter is approximately at ear level. The L100 Classic MK2 weighs 58.5 lbs. Before placing the speaker on a shelf or platform, be sure that it is sturdy enough to support the speaker's weight.

  • For best results, place the speakers 6' to 8' apart. If you set the speakers farther apart than this, angle them toward the listening position.
  • The speakers will produce the most accurate stereo soundstage when the angle between the listener and the speakers is between 40 and 60 degrees.
  • Generally, bass output will increase as the speaker is moved closer to a wall or corner. For best performance, JBL recommends that you place the speakers at least 20" away from the sidewalls.

Note: This speaker does not offer any bracket, keyhole, or threaded insert for wall-mounting.

Speaker Dimensions: 15.4375" (w) x 25.375" (h) x 14.5625" (d)

Stands

JBL Speaker Stand: The JBL JS-120 stand is designed specifically for JBL's L100 Classic loudspeaker. The metal stand angles the speaker upward 7-degrees for better sound imaging. Follow these guidelines when mounting & placing your JBL L100 Classic loudspeakers.
