Maybe its my hearing

I'm perplexed. Looking at some of the reviews for these speakers, and I've seen the same "complaint" regarding other similarly shaped speakers, that they sound "boxy". I live in a very, very rural location and so I order a number of supplies from distant vendors and Amazon delivers them in boxes. I put the empty boxes aside awaiting their final journey to the burn pit but while they sit and wait I have yet to hear a single thing from any of them, and I tried listening to various size boxes. I've placed my ear right next to boxes and have to admit that one very small box did give off an "ocean like" sound when I placed one ear near an open end. The sound was slight, almost imperceptible, but it was there. Perhaps on my next visit to civilization I will stop by the college's Physics Department and try to get an explanation as to sound output that boxes purportedly emit and can once again get to sleep easier at night.

These speakers are amazing. I listen to Reggae and the bass is just what was needed. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to them all day. No fatigue at all.

Very happy with these speakers. I was using Klipsch floor standers before and were a bit too "in your face", so set out to find a warmer laid back sound. The Linton got me where I needed to be. Powering them with a Yamaha as801 and they sound great. Primarily listen to vinyl, so they sound very warm and helps take me back to my younger days when everyone had home receivers/speakers.

Overlooked Gem

"Pleasing!!" Quality begins with their packaging and carries through their build to the sound. I was going to buy the Super LINTON, at the time out of stock. After making the trip to Charlottesville, when they had them, I preferred the 85ths. Like many attest online, these make most every track sound sweet. Effortless and deep, good detail. Blend really well with stereo REL T5X. Chris at the store was patient, accommodating and a pleasure to work with. Highly recommend the value of this speaker against some current well reviewed speakers. Put the savings into subs.

Absolutely hands down best speaker for my taste. Warm, detailed, but strangely crisp and musical. Love the vintage look, and the complete lack of a need for a subwoofer. Fantastic speaker for the money.
Pros: Clarity, complete frequency response, excellent soundstage and beautiful to look at.
Cons: Speaker covers are a tad flimsy and difficult to remove for listening

Natural sound.drums, vocals and subtitles are better. Still breaking in, experimenting with locations/toe in, settings etc. Looking forward to 100th album . Guessing break in may be done around then. Satisfied now and am fine with them performing even better.??

Everything about the experience and the speakers has been perfect. Thank you for the team at Crutchfield for giving me a "workable option" instead of the never coming (?) KLH Model 5s - you listen to what I wanted and steered me in the right direction! The Lintons are BEAUTIFUL and the sound is amazing. Take a serious look at these folks!

Fabulous full range speakers

Great speakers I can highly recommend. They are full range speakers with an excellent visceral bass response that does not need a powered subwoofer. Great midrange for vocals and drums and the tweeter shimmer. I love listening to them for hours with no speaker fatigue. The stands are amazing and keep the speakers at the perfect listening height. I have an old 1990 Denon 40 watt receiver that easily powers these speakers. I guess you could tell I like them.

Great room filling sound

These are incredibly good sounding speakers with a timeless look. The construction of them and the stand is top notch and while heavy, gives them a very nice premium feel. These will be perfect for any medium to large room. The bass response almost makes a subwoofer redundant.

Great speakers at this price point

Very pleased with these Lintons. I listen to both analog and digital sources and they handle both very nicely. I think they are a good value for the money and even more so If you catch them on sale. I have had these for over 2 months now and I agree with others who have stated that these speakers tend to open up and smooth out the more they are played (broken in). I have driven them with a few different mid-powered vintage receivers/integrated and they have impressed. Now looking for something in the 125-175WPC range to try with them. I wanted new speakers, but also wanted a vintage look and these checked both boxes IMO. The bookmatched walnut veneer is also very impressive. I would highly recommend getting the stands as well. No regrets so far.

LINTON WOW!

I just installed these LINTON bad boys with the stands. The sound that comes out of these is amazing! I am not an audio-file-snob, but I do know audio and have been working in the field for over 30 years. First, when you get the four giant boxes of goodness and unpack, Wharfedale gives you a pair of white gloves. Who does that? The build quality is amazing and they are nice and heavy. I plugged the speakers into my NAD C316BEE V2 and Audio-Technica AT-LP60XBT turntable, perfection. I was blown away. My wife and I sat there for hours listening to our records, Bob Marley Exodus, Daft Punk, Nina Simon. Amazing! I am only listening to LPs and you hear every detail. I am now organizing my records based on the mastering and sound quality. Big claps to Wharfedale and thanks to Crutchfield for the amazing service.

Old school style with modern sound.

I replaced some unidentifiable floor speakers I'd bought at a thrift store. These had replaced some 40 year old generic speakers I bought with my grandmother at a mall in the early 80s (with budget Technics components that lasted an impressively long time). So these are the speakers I'm comparing these Wharfedales to. I prefer the old boxes to the new towers, maybe for nostalgic reasons, but what an improvement! I don't think of myself as having golden ears. Maybe tin foil? I didn't realize how poor those generic floor speakers were until I replaced them with these beauties. The sound is warm, clean and precise. They're connected to a Yamaha A-S301 also from Crutchfield. I'm a classical music listener who doesn't crank the volume. The first CD I played was of Bach's Partitas played on a fortepiano. Incredible. I had never heard the clarity before. I felt like I was in the same room as the instrument-could really hear the strings being struck by the hammers. There was no "dampness" in the sound. One didn't feel like the music was being played in the room next door. The base and treble were precise, rich and clear. I couldn't be happier with these speakers. My writing loft is complete. Now to write the next 4 novels in my fantasy series.

She is simple and yet so beautiful. You will probably not notice her in that corner but when she speaks she draw attention. Like a river she is both deep and refreshing. She traps you with her embrace and let you forget you already have someone you think love and will never leave until you meet her.

These are terrific speakers. Perfect clarity, plenty of bass. I've had them for a couple weeks now and I've given them Rock and Jazz and Sinatra and Sammy. They're handling all of it perfectly. Surprised at the sturdiness of the speaker stands. They are heavy and great looking. Listening to music is now the first order of buisiness when I come home from work.

Right out the box these speakers made me say 'WOW'. They are physically beautiful and they sound even better. They are easily the finest speakers I have ever owned. Everything sounds better on them. There has not been a genre of music that these can't handle. I am so glad I listened to the reviews and pulled the trigger on the purchase. Review after review mentioned how 'warm' they were and how they could handle bass without the need for a sub. This has proven to be true. I'm so sick of speakers that shout their clarity at me. Make no mistake, the highs and clarity are there but no longer painfully so. I have them as part of a home theatre setup, where I listen to 90% music. What I have found is that they work well here too. So for me they do it all.

First impression, I'm disappointed. I'm not sure if I have a bad speaker or if they all have this issue. The 5 inch speaker seems to crackle rather easily a high pitch sounds. I've tried different wires, cleaned all the connections, tried a different tuner, and the are results still the same. There is great resonance in the speaker. It does have a good sound. But at certain levels the sound isn't smooth, the speaker buzzes.

Simply the greatest value in speakers. I own KLH 5, Klipsch Heresy, Tekton Lore, Magnepan LRS, and Galion Voyager SE. The Lintons not only keep up with all of them in general sound quality, but surpass all of them in the bass department; I checked my sub TWICE in disbelief. On first listen I was impressed by how similar their strengths are compared to the KLH, which cost quite a bit more. And then to top it off, they look like $3k in my opinion, with super-sturdy and useful stands. After listening for 2 days, I bought a 2nd pair for a friend of mine to replace his overly-bright Klipsch Forte 3's. Buy the Lintons with confidence.

I did a lot of research before buying these speakers. Much has been written about the sound of the Wharfdale LINTON Heritage and after a week of dedicated listening I am very pleased with the purchase. I place a great deal of importance in Erin's reviews on Erin's Audio Corner. I am particularly sensitive to over-emphasized treble and was looking for a neutral speaker. I believe Erin's review of the LINTON is right on the mark. They have ample base and great balance overall. Listening for several hours at one sitting is not tiring. I have noticed a substantial improvement in sound when listening in very familiar recordings and new detail is obvious. Chrutchfield's service was excellent. Speakers arrived in three days. I am extremely pleased with these speakers.

I got these manly because the retro look but also good reviews from various sites there well made and sound great to me. I use these on a fisher 800c tube receiver I fully restored and it drives them fine the bass was somewhat boomy with my setup but I plugged the rear ports with pipe insulation and huge difference ' bass is really good and punchy normal sounding now. overall really happy with with these speakers

Received the 4 boxes as scheduled, 2 day shipping. No damage to the boxes. Speakers were doubled boxed. Warfedale did an excellant job with packaging inside the boxes. Got the speakers set up on the stands and experimented with best placement. Sound is excellent, understand a breakin period. The highs and mids and soundstaging excellent with blues and accoustic type music such as steely day, neil young, doobie bros, etc. The blues guitar excellent, can hear all the various strings and notes. Havent played much type of music yet to produce bass, puts some metalica in, was very good, O and santana, Excellent bass, mids and highs. Have a 15' by 20' room with cathederal ceilings. speakers are on a 20' wall. They sounded better near the corners about 19' apart instea of 10' apart on either side of fireplace. These are not very big speakers, but they will the room, maybe because of wood floors and catherderal ceiling.
Pros: Highs, mids and soundstaging. Bass will come after breakin period. Fit and finish, Excellent. the construction of these are better than most speaker up to $3000. Very solid, same with stands look very nice and solid.

I've researched large bookshelf speakers for a long time and I've been focused on the Lintons ever since I heard them at an audio show. There are a lot of strong speakers in this price range, and choosing is not easy. I love the performance of these speakers. At low volumes I added a bit of bass boost. They are warm, and forgiving speakers that help average recordings sound good. I am extremely pleased with my decision to finally get these speakers. The speakers are also beautiful and the stands are outstanding.

Effortless Musicality on KLH Model 3 Stands

Marantz PM 8006 Node with Spotify Premium REL t7x I realized they call them bookshelves because the bass isnt as deep as you would expect from their size Been 4 weeks and they loosened up and they are dialed in just like any Wharfedale I have had in this set up the Rel set just under 40 the PMs treble minus a quarter as the mids minus a quarter 2 weeks on some old wooden boxes sounded pretty good the Model 3 stands arrived and oh my they went dead silent with just the music coming through toed out about 5 - 10 degrees off the wall aways the stands cleaned them up and added a spaciousness they did not have set flat the texture from all instruments is really good from drums to guitars is it airy I would say not but it is textured and so real I have a set of Denton 85ths I love but they are nothing like the Lintons there is no internet demo to let you experience what I am hearing there is a set of YT demos with the top integrated amps and he has them toed out just a bit and I found that works best for me the individual notes voices drums pianos are forceful and loud each one has enough loudness and separation to really entertain you It allows me to not turn the volume as loud and getting greater satisfaction they have presence I had the rel disconnected and they were good but I put it back and they became so complete can they please without a sub yes but I will be keeping the rel in the mix the spl is strong together I want to say jf you like the dbr 6.2 you will love these
Pros: The treble is there do cymbals shimmer no but jt is very pleasing the DBRs bass is faster but the only comparison I have to give you an idea of their character The PM 8006 matters in the mix do not expect great results with an AVR unless jts Yamaha Aventege type I believe they will scale up very well people refer to Marantz as warm I would say yes in the bass but the PMs treble and midrange can really bite my last were Oberon 5s which had very little bite which I loved until the Lintons
Cons: More pros music extends outwards beyond my speakers backing vocals are hauntingly real and not heard by me on other speakers instrument separation is outstanding you can hear the drummer roll across his kit piano strikes roll a bit too guitars crunch bass lines can be heard evenly with the rest of the music vocals and mids are the star of the show you give the Lintons a good source and some eq and the sky is the limit I got them in black open box they look like never taken out of the box

Great speakers at a great price. Using an NAD C298 with a Rogue RP-1 Preamp. Have noticed that vinyl (Rega RP-6, Ania cartridge) sounds better than my DAC (Schiit Yggy). While that has always been the case regardless of speakers used, it is a fair bit more pronounced with these speakers. Hence, if you listen to vinyl exclusively, then these should be high on your list.

Great Speakers

Ordered these Lintons to replace my old Advents. They are wonderful! Got them for the smooth, mellow upper middle/treble character that is superb with classical music of all kinds. They also create a great, focused, 3-D soundstage. At first listen I thought they were a bit bass-shy, especially at low volume--as if the bass got lost in the room. So I fiddled with placement which helped a bit and did a 24-hour break-in. That made it better but still a bit bass-shy. So I ordered an SVS SB 1000 Subwoofer which solved the problem, especially (as I said), at lower volumes. But (and this is a BIG "but") as mentioned in comments about other Wharfedale speakers, these Lintons apparently require even MORE break-in. So after another few weeks of normal listening, they opened up even more! Now they are beautifully transparent with a graceful, easy presentation but with real impact when called for. I didn't really need the sub, but I'm keeping it because I like the subtle low foundation it provides. So if you get Wharfedales of any kind, and think you need a sub, you might want to hold off for a few months. Sub or no sub, I love my Wharfedales!
Pros: Smooth, non-irritating yet extended treble and upper midrange. Deep, well-controlled bass. Fantastic for intimate chamber music, but can give a huge, powerful orchestral presentation when called for. Excellent 3-D soundstage and imaging

These speakers are awesome! I've owned several pairs of Wharfedale speakers and I continue to be a big fan after purchasing these. The sound is warm and detailed, and very engaging. I listen mostly to classic rock but also some other genres and so far everything sounds great with these. I'm driving them with a Marantz 7025 power amp which provides plenty of clean power and I'm very happy with this combo. I do believe they need break-in time as I notice the sound improving the more I play them (treble detail especially is getting better). The bass output by these is phenomenal, tight but not overdone. I do use a subwoofer but with these I turned its crossover frequency way down so the sub only covers the extreme low end. On their own they produce a very nice balanced, full-range sound. I also love the vintage look of these (red mahogany), and did I mention the stands? The stands are solid and sturdy, and look beautiful. I expect I'll be happy with these for a long time.

Very nice sound, mids are kind of strident and highs veiled initially but the speaker undergoes a transformation as it burns in and 50 hours in the sound is breathtaking. Clear but not strident highs, refined prominent midrange and whopping bass once you dial in the port-to-wall distance.
Pros: Beautiful looking like fine retro furniture, very solid. Stands are great. Sound is wonderful, best speakers I have ever had.
Cons: Buyers should be aware of burn in time, the sound gets much better and different.

Build quality and craftsmanship are excellent and I couldn't find a flaw on them. Veneer is perfectly mirror matched for the pair and the grain continues across the top and down the side. Great attention to detail. The stands are very solid and well built. They are completely assembled so all you do is pull them out of the box and adjust the spikes to level the stands. The speakers and stands provide a very nice vintage look and that's exactly what I wanted. Now for how they perform. I like to listen to a lot of classic rock and to be honest. I was having a hard time enjoying the music because the various speakers I tried in my system exposed to much. The vocals and instruments sounded grainy with a lot of the music. I started swapping out equipment and speakers and never could make correct the issue. With modern high quality recordings I didn't have an issue with any of the speakers I tried. I read some reviews and watched a lot of videos about these Lintons and there was talk about the highs being very veiled and made listening to poorer recordings better. That sounded exactly like what I needed and so I decided to pull the trigger and with Crutchfield's return policy I had nothing to lose. I made the right choice! These speakers sound fantastic listening to just about anything. They are not exceptional in any one category, but do everything really well and very smooth sounding with no fatigue. I did add a couple of smaller 8" subs that helped fill the deep lows.
Pros: Great classic rock speakers with vintage looks. Best bang for the buck out there.
Cons: They do have 8" woofers so a sub definitely does them justice if you like hard bass. Not a deal breaker as do pretty good on their own. The sub just takes them to the next level.

Love my Lintons

I love these speakers. Originally bought the Klipsch Heresy IV loudspeakers but found them to bright and unnatural sounding. These Lintons are lovely to listen to, and not fatiguing at all. Definitely recommend them with the stands, it's a great value!

Cons: Wish the speakers had a mating system on the bottom to mate with the top plate of the stands so they wouldn't accidentally slide around or get knocked off.

The Hype is Real

ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! My room is a 750 sq ft Great Room and these speakers absolutely fill it! But just as important I wanted speakers that would sound good played at low levels, as my wife is not as into music - and they do. These speakers are often described as "laid back" and "warm", this made me a little worried as part of the reason for me moving up was I wanted speakers with better mids and highs - they sparkle without being harsh. The hype is real!

Only about a week in to my experience with the Lintons and have to say that I am impressed so far. Incredibly well packaged and the finish and design do indeed give a great first impression. I have been running a pair of early-80's ADS L520 2-ways for the last several years. In many ways they are very similar speakers. Both are very engaging and non-fatiguing to the ear. The ADS have a bit more top end clarity as of now, but the Lintons definitely give a more full and well rounded presentation overall. The bass response is inarguably a step up with the Lintons and the soundstage and imaging are significantly better. That was the main thing I wanted and felt that I was missing with the ADS. I have only been able to put 20 hours or so on the Lintons so far and all reports are that they do tend to open up more as they break-in, so I am excited to see where it goes from here!

Day 2 (yes I am enthusiastic). Bought the Wharfedales for my unfinished garage (30' x 32'). Running 4 speakers through my Yamaha R-N803. Polk RTi A7 Towers and a Polk PSW125 Subwoofer. The Wharfedales sound amazing and the big space is now full with amazing sound. Two thumbs up!

Relaxing with Linton

Please keep in mind, this review is from my personal music taste, it could be different depends personal's music preference. The great speakers, you can listen music for continuously without any tired or headache. I used to have LS50-Meta, which is another great speaker and gives super clear sound at mid-high range, but I usually feel tired , sometime headache after listening music a couple of hours through LS50Meta. I also saw some listener have same complained as I have. I spent tons of time to find good speakers with reasonable prices, under my budge, finally I changed the speakers to Linton Heritage in order to relax when I doing photographic editing works as listening music for serval hours. Occasionally, I miss the super clear sound from LS50-Meta, but most of time I really enjoy the mid-range and bass sound from Linton Heritage. Two thumbs up for the Wharfedale Linton Heritage.

Best Bookshelf Speaker on the Market!

I was about to purchase the KLH model 5 speakers when I began reading reviews about Wharfdale Lintons. The LINTON reviews were stellar..clarity, soundstage, bass tight, it didn't matter what your choice of music you played the Lintons were favorable. I have been an an audiophile for twenty years and these speakers are outstanding. If you connect the Lintons to a decent amp, cd player and turntable you will be mesmerized. I have them connected to Marantz PM 8006, Marantz CD 6007. and Music Hall Classic turntable. If you truly enjoy listening to music better run & purchase the Wharfdale Lintons. I have no idea why it is categorized as a " low budget speaker". The sound quality is superb and I am so glad I purchased the Lintons.

I ordered the Linton's because I was getting ear fatigue. I had older Aperion tower speakers powered by onkyo and russound amp, which are very nice, but the ears are not as young as they use to be. Tina at Crutchfield recommended the Linton's or the Evo 4.4's. I went with the Linton's because of their great reviews and their throw back unique looks and character. I am not an audio file, but I love music. These are really good at everything. Their best quality is they are just balanced in everything they do. They bring you into the music in a friendly and inviting way, and show you everything. They also sound great at low volumes, and work well as home theatre speakers. Their weakness is they are not the best speakers to rock out to. For example Black sabbath sounds good, but it rocks a little better on my Aperions in my opinion. I did also purchase a Yamaha r-n1000a amp to pair with them. They compliment each other really well. I would not pair these with a warmer amp. They need something to give them a little life in my opinion. Out of necessity my speakers are placed 12-14 inches from the rear wall. Which works well most of time, but they can get a little boomy at higher volumes. There nothing to their sides but plants. Living room is 15 X 26. The speakers seamed to take 20-30 hours to break in and the Yamaha seemed like it took about 8 hours or so to loosen up some of its harshness and open up. Best of all no ear fatigue.

Really wanted to like these

Recently decided that I wanted to upgrade our home stereo system. Originally the Linton's weren't on my short list (bigger than I really wanted & rear ported which I was trying to avoid) but the large number of positive reviews convinced me to give these a try. Plus the stands double as storage for vinyl records. Super cool! Got these hooked up and initially liked them quite a bit. Very easy to listen to and they have a mid-range richness that can really bring vocals right into the room. However, the more I listened, the more I felt something was... missing. The treble seemed a bit rolled off and while I wasn't wanting more frequency extension in the bass I did find myself looking for slightly more clarity. At this point I was afraid I was going to drive myself (and my wife crazy) so I did something I don't usually do; I picked up the phone and called Crutchfield for some professional advice. Big shoutout to Crutchfield and Mason who recommended I look at something from Focal and landed on the Aria 926's. Usually this wouldn't be a fair comparison since the 926's are in a totally different price bracket but with the current sale (clearance?) they were almost exactly the same price. With both pairs connected to a Rotel A11 Tribute and using the a/b option to switch between them in real time the difference in clarity, punch and soundstage was night and day. Now I just have to find the right amp for the 926's. McIntosh perhaps?

The warm full sound I've been looking for! These retro look speakers take me right back to my dad's 70s era speakers. My permanent speakers. They just keep sounding better. They are rolled off a tiny bit at the high end. Crutchfield customer service is the tops!

Cheap Overpriced Junk

I give them this low rating because of the following facts I am listing here making them one of the biggest scams in loudspeakers that I have ran across in the 21st Century: (1) Build quality 1 star: The reason is because they fail the "Center Knuckle Test" miserably, this test simply requires you to use your middle knuckle and rap the cabinet on the sides and top, a well made speaker will only make a dull thud sound indicating the speaker cabinet is well made on the other hand if you get a hollow ringing sound that tells you the speakers are made with thin cheap materials, I checked into the construction of these speakers, they use cheap 1/2 inch MDF board instead of the much better 3/4 inch board. (2) Drivers 1 star: The reason I give this low of a score for the drivers used in this speaker is because they are nothing special they are about the same quality drivers used in speakers selling for less than half the price of these. Speaker design (1) star: I have never had a even a cheap pair of speakers selling 150.00 or less a pair that you have to use a screwdriver, knife or some other foreign object to pry off the grills, every speaker I have seen in the past that have the grills completely surrounded by the enclosure include a cheap little pull tab at the bottom so you can pull the grill out enough to slide your fingers behind them and remove the grill. At 600.00 a pair I would go 3.5 stars.
Pros: Power Handling: I used 2 Parasound 2250.2 power amps bridged pushing over a 1000 watts, I had to be sending at least 400 watts through them and they didn't sound distressed at all.
Cons: Poor enclosure, below average sound for speakers at this price, you DO NOT need to purchase some special high price amp to drive them I also used a cheap 50 watt Sherwood receiver made in the 80's and they did not sound any worse, my suggestion is don't buy the speakers at all there are many speakers out there for far less money and sound as well if not better than these.

I'm very happy with the Lintons

Four years ago, I was impressed by Herb Reichert's positive review of the Wharfedale Lintons in Stereophile. Herb said the Lintons "play the songs well," and he was right. I waffled over buying them simply because there are so many other speakers to consider. I'm so glad I finally decided to buy the Lintons. They are the best sounding speakers I've ever owned, by far. They easily beat my floor standing JBL and PSB speakers. The Lintons have a full, clear sound that makes them appropriate for all genres of music, including classic rock and classical, both of which require some oomph. With the Lintons, I don't use my subwoofer. I power my Lintons with a Schiit Aegir amplifier, as did Herb in his review. These 20 quality watts are plenty for the Lintons. A word of caution: The Lintons require a lot of break in time to sound good. Out of the box, they sound dull. After an hour, they sound OK, but they only start to wake up after 20 hours or so. I have about 40 hours on mine now, and they are sounding really nice. The Lintons are heavy stand mount speakers. Be sure to buy the stands. Finally, the Lintons look really good. I have the mahogany veneer finish, and it's beautiful. I recommend the Wharfedale Linton speakers highly.

These speakers pair very well with my Prima Luna Dialogue Premium HP. I have an 18'x13' living room. These speakers sound beautiful right out of the gate. I am very happy with my decision to make this purchase. I listen to mainly Jazz, Avant Garde and Classical LP's and CD's. So far everything from ECM, Blue Note, Riverside, Impulse, Decca, Deutsch Gramaphone, ENJA and Naxos sounds amazing! Crutchfield was on point with the delivery. The speakers were packed very well!
Pros: Sound excellent with my amplifier. They look amazing. The stands are beyond heavy duty.

Still positioning and adjusting for the' sweetest spot' in a smaller listening room-but overall impression has been nothing short of excellent in so many ways. Audio sensitivity, build quality, physical appearance and an abundance of some chest pounding sound (even with a Yamaha AS 501 amp). Replaced a pair of forty year old Yamaha NS 690-2's with the the Linton Heritage's and was amazed at not just the technology but the noticeable astounding quality of sound. These also fit well in a smaller living room with no sacrificing of lows or highs accuracy. My only regret-wish I would have got the Mahogany finish. Totally satisfied!

Clear, gentle sound

Extremely happy. Bought these after listening to a bunch of high-end audiophile reviews, Erin in particular but several more to confirm, and I love these speakers. They have a sound that I can only describe as gentle, but which doesn't sacrifice anything in terms of detail and presence. There's no harshness at all from highs to lows. I've been happy with metal, blues, jazz, dubstep, rap, and everything else I've thrown at them. They're all-day listening speakers. Check out some reviews and then buy them. You won't be disappointed. I am using them paired with a JBL subwoofer and Topping E50 DAC and PA5 II amp.

Bass drum kicks!

4.5 stars. If a friend who knew nothing about audio asked what speakers to get for this price range I would send this link. For me everything I played through it sounded good. But also, it all sounded the same. I could no longer tell a big difference between SACD, CD, certain vinyl. My components sounded like more like an all-in-on you. I was hoping to find a winner coming from the KLH Model 5 but now I see that I should not ruin a good relationship. Used Marantz 40n, Technics 1210gr, Denon PMA-1600NE, Bluesound Node using Roon. I'm used to enjoying how each of these components bring in certain life to its format. Fun watching older horror movies through these. Bit of nostalgia.

I just installed the Wharfedale Linton Heritage speakers. Awesome sound right out of the box. I am sure once the Lintons break in the sound will open up and improve. Due to space limitations, I had to place the speakers 12 inches from the wall. I did turn down the bass on my Marantz Model 30 to prevent the sound from being too bass heavy. I also purchased ELAC 12 gauge speaker cables from Crutchfield. It was a challenge setting up the speakers and stands. As I live alone, I did the install by myself. The stands and speakers are heavy. The Linton speakers and stands are beautiful and very well constructed. I am very impressed. Crutchfield is excellent!
Pros: Beautiful look and sound. I purchased the walnut finish and it really works well in my living room.
Cons: Except for the weight, there are no cons.

Modern Take On A Classic Speaker

Wharfedale Linton Heritage speakers are worth both every purchase dollar and the personal time needed to properly set them up in your room. I was concerned at first about trying another dual rear ported bass reflex speaker design in my main room. Previous rear ported speakers I tried tended to "boom" and produce a lot of unpleasant bass "overhang" even when the front baffle was placed 3' in front of the wall behind them. It's a difficult room to tame. However, the Linton's are more than a pleasant surprise! Despite the dual rear ports there was no flabby bass "boominess" in the room. I plugged one port on each speaker to slightly tighten up the upper bass. That minor tweak also helped to reveal more of the already excellent mid range detail produced. Works for me. The stand spikes are also fully removeable if you prefer to use felt or rubber pads for placement on hardwood flooring. Despite the overwhelmingly positive reviews, I was very reluctant to try these speakers given my previous experience with rear ported designs. However, Crutchfield's generous return policy backed up my "experiment." Shout out to LJ my advisor for assisting with the purchase. I'm more than surprised they're not going back! Definite keepers. Take the time to properly position the Linton's in your listening room to bring out their classic sounding best. The Linton's are a real budget audiophile bargain. Enjoy!

I purchased a pair of brand new Linton a while ago. You will think what bad experience you could possibly get from buying a brand new set of speakers? Well, here was the story. I found out the speakers were labeled LEFT and RIGHT because of the off-center positioned treble driver. However, the serial numbers were not sequential which might later affect the resell value. So I called back and the salesman named Steve (Steven?) answered the phone. After hearing out my complaint, he actually threatened me that I can not sell the speakers otherwise I will be banned forever from making any other purchase from Crutchfield. First of all, I do not intend to resell the speakers, rather I was saying IF I want to resell them many years later, non-sequential serial number will hurt the resell value. What kind of customer service is that? I ended up with keeping the speakers because I like them and do not want to bother with the return. But I was threatened and humiliated and I chose to do nothing. I only take away one star from the rating because I do not want to hurt the reputation of this wonderful set of speakers. I deducted a star primarily to express my extremely resentful feeling toward this particular salesman. Are you doing anything to compensate, Crutchfield, or do you choose to take your employee side?

Bought these in Jan 0f '23. I have over 200 hours on them. They just got better and better as the "burn in" commenced. I am not going to give you the all the grand BS on the sound stage etc. It's an old school 3-way speaker. I thought I would be wanting more bass, but these are just fine. My 15" sub is sitting idle at the moment. It took me awhile to find the "sweet spot" with these. The rewards are many if you have patience. They are so good that you may find that some pressings (vinyl) fall short. Revealing and efficient. I REALLY like them and have no regrets. I have them running off of a Harman Kardon 730 Twin Power. Digital or analogue both sound great. Beautiful to look at also, the stands pair perfectly and even my S.O. has come to like their style. I have the red mahogony which is a wood veneer and not a vinyl wrap

Very good sounding speakers that keep getting better. Powered by an OA 7000x amp. through a Denon 3700h. They pull double duty as part of a surround system and phono/stereo setup. I do have a subwoofer and it definitely makes a difference. In my room, they're not picky at all about placement. Up against the wall, away from the wall - doesn't matter. Less toe-in seems to work better. Again, that's my room and I'm no audiophile. If your into deafening volume levels, these things will go there without distortion. Deducting one star because the wood laminate looks cheap. The stands aren't great either but they match the speakers. No thanks to the delivery driver, everything arrived in perfect condition thanks to excellent packaging.

If two are good, four are better

My background is as a classically trained pianist combined with participation in orchestral and concert bands as a percussionist. I first encountered Wharfedale speakers in 1960. My remembrance is they were quite good for that era. My current experience with Wharfedale speakers came in February of this year when I ordered a pair of the Linton Heritage from Crutchfield. After a 72-hour break-in, I was ecstatic with the sound - these speakers are extremely musical, detailed, and warm. The level of bass output can be tuned by moving the speaker(s) closer to or further away from the front wall. The highs are not strident, but musical. Superb attack! Lots of voicing. Great soundstage. The strength of the Heritage series speakers is the mid-range where most music is played. My listening room is 12' wide by 26' deep with a 10' ceiling. The first two Heritage speakers filled the room with great-sounding music well enough, and then I read an article about stacking two additional speakers on top of the first two. In March I ordered a second pair of the Linton Heritage speakers and stacked them. WOW! What a difference!!! Everything is enhanced! The soundstage is wall-to-wall and much deeper than with the initial two speakers. I am running a Rotel 1592 MKII integrated amp with a Marantz SACD 30n. If you are tempted to try two additional speakers do not hesitate as Crutchfield's return policy is the best in the business and their customer service is wonderful.

White glove treatment? Cool!

If you're on the fence about buying a pair of these, as I have been for almost a year now, just hop on over and buy the darned things. If you're into vintage-looking stand mounted "bookshelf" speakers, you will be hard pressed to find a better pair of speakers in this price range. Regardless of them being built in China, the build quality is exceptional and has surpassed my expectation. The speakers are beautifully constructed and I couldn't find a single flaw on them anywhere. I'm impressed with the overall fit & finish, I feel like these punch well above their weight in terms of a cost to quality ratio. To remove the grills, simply take a plastic debit/credit card in each hand and GENTLY pry around the corners and they come off very easily(I would caution you to be extremely careful doing this as any damage you cause will negatively impact a possible return). The stands are both physically heavy and heavy duty in their construction, no doubt these are built to last. My system is simple. My amp is a '74 Pioneer SA9100 and I stream Spotify through my tv/roku and to my ears all the music I enjoy sounds great through these speakers with zero fatigue and none of those nasty cabinet resonances that my Cerwins had which could make some songs very unenjoyable. Bottom line.I dig the look and sound of these speakers and would highly recommend them. Lastly, be very careful if you actually wear the white gloves provided, against the satin finish they are very slippery.
Pros: Aesthetically pleasing to look at and will receive compliments from guests. Build quality, sound quality. Not fatiguing at higher volumes. Will make you want to sit around and listen to more music. Sound great either with varying degrees of toe in or straight ahead.
Cons: Depending on your flooring situation, these could be a little tricky to move around. Just be careful and maybe have a family member or friend help you.last thing you want is a speaker toppling over off the stand and hitting the ground. However, this is a nit-picky thing because if you're buying stand mounted speakers of this size, you should be ready to accept that moving them around to find the sweet spot may be a little difficult.

My opinion of these speakers are similar to what you hear from the others. Absolutely spectacular build quality, and they do sound very good. I gave 5-stars because these could very well be THE perfect speaker for someone else with different tastes, in a different environment. In my opinion, they lacked a bit of bass, and I just don't want to have the extra money for a good sub. I'll do just that if the other speakers in this price range don't solve the problem. But, for now...the search continues. Will be interesting to see how the SVS Ultra Tower compares. All in all a very good sounding speaker, with tremendous build quality and beautiful stands. I'm a huge Warfedale fan, now.

I wanted to give a shout out to Dutch who helped me pick these. I had purchased the SVS Prime Pinnacles which were extremely fatiguing, bright, harsh, and thin. They might make for a good home theatre speaker for someone who doesn't listen to a lot of music. Crutchfield made the return very easy and I am very happy with the Wharfedales. They are just beautiful and exceptionally well made. Very easy to listen to with an amazing lush midrange and great texture to the bass. Drums have never sounded better. Not fatiguing in the least. Only downside is I am spending too much time listening to music!

Love these heavy speakers

Wow! These speakers have a big crisp sound that I love. I completely recommend them. It probably helps the sound, but these speakers as well as the stands are quite heavy to really heavy depending upon your physique. The stands have pointy feet that freely stand on metal thick metal disks. I think this is also for better sound. I think it looks high end, but the feet combined with the speaker's weight make them hard to move.

A speaker, I prefer 3 ways. I play the Beethoven 9th symphony CD which by Arturo Toscanini conducting NBC Symphony Orchestra (recording 1952) of RCA Victor (gold seal). The sound of all kind instruments, the vocals of male and female, the chorus, the sound of volume as low as mosquito hum and high as jet engine, and the sound of drum is deep and clear enough. In between the speakers, I felt the orchestra was in there. It's sound in clarity and clear. Also you may test Chicago Symphony by Solti as well, but E. Ormandy's one, I feel it looks he recomposed this 9th of his own caused a big deference with other two. Therefore, any other genre of music they are all to be sounded in good lever of hi fidelity as well. I don't know how excellent sound about MKLN system and others at 00000 unit price. To me this set which is very good to enjoy all kind of the music.

Wharfedale Linton in Mahogany Red

I bought these here on Crutchfield and I've been blown away by every aspect of these wonderful speakers. I researched these extensively before deciding to take the plunge. For the last 5 years I've enjoyed a pair of B&W 705 S2 bookshelf speakers, but I always wanted more bass. As wonderful as the B&W's are, I found with the Linton everything I had been missing. The Wharfedale's 8"woofer is rated down to 40HZ and will deliver useful bass to 35 HZ. The 705's were good down to 50 HZ. The extra bass extension on the Linton gave me a richer, well controlled deep bass which has been a game changer for me. Another major upgrade I love is now having a 5"midrange driver. The 705 was strictly a 2 way speaker. The Linton is serving up richer and more detailed vocals than The 705's, it's no comparison. Treble is refined, sweet and detailed. The speaker cabinets are beautifully built and finished. The matching Mahogany stands are gorgeous and together they make a dynamic statement in my room. On the music front, everything I play is richer and more impactful than I've had in many years. Every genre of music sounds superb. Classical and Jazz are real standouts, but everything else I play always sounds great. So I will always love my B&W speakers, but the Wharefedale Linton, (at a fraction of the price), are putting a much bigger smile on my face. This is my end game speaker, this is audio Nirvana for me.

Wharfedale Linton

I'll start by saying, if your looking for an "in your face" or "ear piercing" speaker then the Wharfedale Linton's won't be right for you. My intrigue with these speakers was the constant mention of neutrality and non fatiguing and the Linton's delivered! I have 8 sets of speakers with many different sound signatures but none that have the smooth sound of the Linton's. I am strictly using these in a 2.0 setup with a Yamaha AS-501, Pro Ject carbon debut evo, Bellari VP 130 MK2 preamp and streaming music from an Auris bluMe Pro. (I'm also running Audio Quest speaker cable to them) I've played them for about 40 hrs at this point and have yet to find many flaws ( keeping in mind their neutral sound signature ) also curious to see if "break in" makes these sound any better. I was concerned that the AS-501 wouldn't have enough power to push them but at the listening volumes that I need they pair up very nice. Aesthetically these speakers are great looking, they def have a large footprint. Fit and finish on the speakers and stands are top notch. I was concerned that they might lack filling up my audio room but they have a nice wide sound stage without having to be in the "sweet spot".
Pros: Great sounding right out of the box, yet to be fatiguing ( longest listening stretch was 4.5 hours ) With a 90db sensitivity are relatively easy to push.
Cons: They do take a fair amount of floor space, prying the grill covers off is tough ( no pull tabs and you have to wedge something in to pry out ) hoping not to cut the mesh or gouge the cabinet. No complaints on their sound as of yet.

Very nice speakers

Very well packed. You could probably drop them 10 feet without damage. The build quality is amazing on these. The veneer is matched left side to top and down the right. I've never seen better made furniture, much less loudspeakers. Even the stands are built to a high standard. Sound-wise, I'm a little flummoxed. I have a pair of Buchardt S300s, which are true stand-mounts with 6.5" mid woofers and they have both deeper and "better" bass. I decided to try the Lintons because reviewers stated that they had great "punch" in the mid bass. Now, I know that the S300s measure deeper in low frequencies, but they are also a bit louder there. In comparison, the Lintons are downright thin. Maybe they are flatter, but the S300s seem fleshed out better. The mids and highs are very similar in both and fatigue-free. I will check to see if the woofers are out of phase (it's happened with some NHTs I tried), but I doubt that. I did move them back quite close to the wall and they are still somewhat thin. I'll give them some more time, but I suspect that I will be returning them. I do have renewed respect for the Buchardts, so it wasn't a waste of time. I won't say that the Lintons are not great. After all, it may just be my preferences (bias). After all, how could all of those reviewers be wrong?

These speakers aren't just good, they're magical. They make me feel like I'm a kid in the late '70s again, lying on the floor between the speakers of my Sears combo radio/cassette/phono stereo. Except these sound WAY better than any speakers I've ever owned and I'm absolutely obsessed with them. My setup is simple: Apple TV 4K connected via HDMI to an LG 4K television, then optical out to a Yamaha A-S501 integrated amp. No subwoofer, no other gear (yet). Did I mention I have no subwoofer? I was afraid I might need one, but the Lintons go deep down and I can feel the bass in my chest. I can't imagine how a sub could possibly improve the sound. I'm not going to mess with it. The construction and quality are as perfect as everyone else says, and the matching stands are a must have. It pains me to not have LPs to store in their bases, so I guess I'll go down the phono rabbit hole next. Oh, and a million Internet points to Crutchfield for making my Klipsch RP-600M II and Wharfedale Denton 85 returns so painless. Their team really is the best in the industry.

Best Value Speakers Ever

Best built speaker you can buy for the price easily. I recently had a friend over and they asked how much I paid for the speakers and they said, "Wow, I thought they would have cost a lot more." The sound is smooth, full, and non-fatiguing. I have owned approximately 20 pairs of speakers over the years including JBL Century L100, Paradigm Studio Reference 100 v.2, Denton 80th, and most recently Kef Q900. Although these don't have the same amount of bass as the Q900's four 8" woofers, they have more than enough to satisfy me in my 16'x24' vaulted ceiling room. The highs are just as clean and detailed as the Kefs, just maybe a bit smoother. The standout feature about the Lintons though is their furniture grade cabinets and stands. The packaging comes with white golves, seriously. Most speakers these days are made with 15/32" particle board with cheaper than cheap vinyl wrap. The build quality of the Kef Q900s is what I would call acceptable, but the new Q950's build qulaity is crap ($2400 w/grills). Lintons put every other speaker I have EVER seen in person to shame. These are most likely the last pair I will buy. I am using a Yamaha R-N 803 to power these and consider it a bit overkill. I think any modern receiver or amplifier would drive these just fine. To protect the finish I had a local glass shop cut some 1/4" thick glass for tops and it cost about $50 and used Blu Tack to hold the speakers to the stands. Pros: Outstanding value for the money. Heirloom quality finish. I honestly believe Wharfedale could offer a money back satisfaction guarantee on these and never lose a dime. I purchased these to pair with a vintage 7070 Sansui, but the receiver is out of commission at the moment, so I set them up on my Yamaha AVR RX-Z7. They sound great but take the time to get them positioned for the best sound. Primary music was played, Jazz and classic rock, and I could not be happier; great speakers for the money, and they look fabulous with the stands.

It took a lot of effort to click the "Buy" button. I am sure it is going to be the same for most of you. These are expensive speakers even when they are on sale. For readers that might find this useful, my journey has been from Onkyo receiver (TXSR608) with Mirage satellite speaker and then Bose 700 sound bar with sub. The location of the speakers is in a 16x20 room. I am using it with a Marantz Cinema 60. The combination is amazing. I don't think I need the extra bass (Andrew Robinson is right) for the room size. I listen to a wide range - but mostly its English, Indian, Instrumentals - mostly from 70's and 80's. All I can say is the music is pleasant. I am enjoying the FIFA World Cup as well. I don't have the budget for surround speakers. But the more I use the more I feel, I really don't need the surround. The speakers are best described as "Pleasant". It sounds the way it looks. I debated between KLH, Klipsch 600M2 and a few others. It all boils down to the taste, but the fact is you cannot really listen to all the speakers and then decide. But the conversations in YouTube and forums will help you to get a sense and then you can co-relate to what you have heard before. Hope this review helps.

The Linton's are Balanced, Warm & Full

I have never had a "quality" pair of stereo speakers and I personally don't like the looks of modern floor standing speakers. I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews on several vintage style offerings from Klipsch, JBL, KLH, etc. After a lot of thought I decided to try the Wharfedale Linton Heritage speakers and I have to say I think they sound wonderful. Compared to my old KLH speakers from the early 90's (before KLH became the quality they are now) they sound completely balanced from top to bottom. The highs, mids and lows all sound in line with each other without one area over powering the others. The old KLH's sound bright, harsh and mid-scooped in comparison. These Linton's are very relaxed, not bright or harsh in anyway so they will definitely never fatigue your ears. I'm using a Yamaha R-N803 Receiver with them and they sound great with it. I listen to all genres but a lot of Rock and Classical. Listening to Bach's Cello Suites performed by Queyras the cello sounds so warm and full-bodied. The violins in Honeck's recording of Beethoven's 5th sounded harsh and screechy on my old KLH speakers, but warm and balanced with the Linton's. Dark Side Of The Moon sounds wonderful, Waters bass sounds great and I didn't feel the need for a subwoofer. I'm listening in a large concrete basement that has no treatment other than some rugs and wooden shelves to help cover some concrete walls and it sound amazing. I can't imagine how good they sound in a proper room!
Pros: They look great, very pleasing to the eye. They sound great, warm and balanced with no chance of ear fatigue. They are the lowest priced vintage-styled speaker.

By far, the best value in speakers for the money. From what I can tell, they sound as good (if not better) than many speakers that cost more.
Pros: Exceptional sound for the money. They came well-packed and undamaged. Also, they arrived well within the two day window Crutchfield advertises. Set-up was easy.
Cons: The speakers are a bit heavy (45 pounds per speaker; 40 pounds per stand). I couldn't persuade the UPS delivery person to deliver them beyond the front porch which made hauling them up to my media room on the second floor of my house a real adventure.

I recently purchased these speakers to replace my old set of Spica TC-60s that I handed down to my son, and was looking for something with that classic look to go with my vintage equipment (McIntosh MC-250 power amp/Yamaha C-6 control amp). Before making the purchase, I devoured all the reviews I could find online and with few exceptions there was nothing but high praise for these. Of course, with the trust I have in Crutchfield, the purchase of these was a no-risk proposition. The initial set up is done but I have not spent a ton of time listening to them yet and am still fine-tuning their placement for that ideal soundstage. However, based on first impressions, I am very pleased. I do feel like it is a stretch to classify these as bookshelf speakers due to their size - I have never seen a residential bookshelf that would comfortably hold them. The build quality is amazing, and the matching stands are exceptionally well made and, frankly, pretty darn cool with their record storage spaces at the bottom. The final test was spousal approval. The wife had to sign-off on the looks so as to not ruin the décor aesthetics of the room, and this is part of the reason I went with the black ones - there was a concern that the wood-tone finishes would clash with our other furniture pieces. In short, these speakers have checked all the boxes for me. Looks, sound and value (and of course the Crutchfield factor). You won't be disappointed if you choose the Wharfedale LINTON

These speakers are absolutely awesome if you like Rock, Progressive, Techno, and R&B, and perhaps Country too. For classical, they sound less pleasing. They have a wonderful midrange, and a very punchy bass. I can highly recommend them

Nostalgic Speakers !

After being a audiophile for practically 50 years, I have had quite a array of equipment and speakers. I always have a few pairs of speakers in my home with 2 pair at the moment that are much more expensive examples than the Lintons. These Wharfdale Linton speakers remind me of the 1970's when the box type speakers were very prominent in every audio store. The Lintons have a wonderful mid-range and tweeter that isn't too extreme like other brands. I am very sensitive to high-end listener fatigue. I don't get that with these. The bass is little more than most but placement is everything. I have been playing these Wharfdales' well over 150 hours in which you need to break them in properly to have them "open up" and then they really come alive ! You won't be disappointed with the Lintons and are one of the best bangs for the buck !
Pros: The Red Mahogany is a Lovely cabinet as well as the finish. Well made overall with quality drivers and crossovers with a 5 year warranty to boot.

I love the nostalgic look, especially in the natural walnut veneer. Very well executed and beautiful to look at. Packaging was first rate and beyond their price point. I'm still breaking them in but the sound is rather neutral and true to the recording. They stage and image quite well, bass performance is strong and midrange is pleasant. I believe they are still opening up on the top end. I would recommend these to anyone!

Remarkably simple

I reserve the right to update this review. I have only had the Lintons for a week. I am blown away by their looks , style, quality and sound so far. Their accuracy is remarkable. I am a musician (drummer) and know what some things should sound like. Percussives sound like they should. The Lintons sound staging is impressively huge. I had a small REL (tx/5) already running , so it is chiming in (barely). I like the Wharfdales with that little bit of help. I am using a Marantz NR 1711, a Bluesound Vault, Brennan 2, Marantz CD 6007 and Amazon Prime Streaming. No matter what the source is, the Lintons do well. I must admit that volume helps. I think that they sound better at medium to high levels. Low volume levels are more of a challenge. I think that a week is not an appropriate test period and that I can get a lot more from the Lintons in the next few weeks. I have the speakers placed in front of windows (curtained) and plan to move them as soon as find a place. I cannot come out very far into the room, but can move them further apart. The sound spectrum is accurate from low to high. I want to call them slightly forward, but I am not quite sure yet that that is the right term. I think that the Lintons are remarkable simply. Is that a contradiction? I think I will love them more as time goes on. I will not look further any time soon. I might try a different receiver but fully expect to hear the same speakers. The Lintons are winner

Before I could make an ultimate decision to get this wonderful pair I had been searching the net, especially on Crutchfield, talking to friends who are audiophiles and watching videos where experts talked about different speakers. I must say this pair is ideal for my bag of music: ROCK and all types of ROCK! Dynamic, separate walls of sound, fast, punching base lines that I can follow. No need for a sub: I don't want earth-shaking boomy roar for base but noticeable base lines that weave into electrifying guitar riffs and dynamic drum beats. I can now hear details that I couldn't with my old Chario Pegasus speakers which I don't think can handle the rock dynamics. If you love rocks as I do don't look far this is the PAIR. You won't regret as I didn't.

These speakers are smooth with detail. There is clarity in the highs and mids that make these sound awesome. You can listen to anything for hours without fatigue. I recently bought JBL Stage A170 and loved them. These blow the JBL's away.

These are really wonderful speakers. It's hard to put your finger on what the one standout feature is on these - the sound, the finish, appearance, etc. I think the way in which these speakers shine is really the all around package - these are a case of, the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts. Sonically, these are very nice. These speakers are replacing some rather nice but very old Magnepans, and so the bar is set pretty high. That said, I'm very happy with them. They don't have the soundstage of the Magnepans, but I do hear some details in music that I hadn't heard before. They're smooth, and they have a nice relaxing tone. They can still create a nice soundstage too. But really the defining quality in these speakers, and the reason I wanted to buy them for the past two years, is just the whole package. The sound is great, the fit and finish on these is amazing, the look and size and total package - it's really a bargain! On the stands, these are top notch. I'm very happy with the purchase! I can't wait to have these in my collection for many many years.

I have had the Linton's running for about a week now and I am forced to say they are fabulous! I spent quite a bit of time researching speakers within my budget and when I saw Crutchfield had put them on sale with stands, my mind was made up. I spent most of my time reading reviews on the internet as well as YouTube. Everything I read and watched was positive so I thought I would give them a try. I can't tell you how pleased I am with the Linton's. They are as advertised. Do not hesitate, they are wonderful and you can't beat Crutchfield for service, knowledge and technical support.

Vintage made modern!

I am very happy with these speakers, they are absolutely what I was looking for. Play with positioning. In my room they needed to be pulled out about 2 feet from the front wall and the same from the side walls. Love the vocal quality they produce. My amp is a Peachtree Nova 150 and I think they are matched well. Also, the stands are very well made.

I dig these speakers, but with a few caveats. I was coming from Goldenear Triton 7's. I love those, but there were a few things I was missing. The Tritons are accurate, detailed, and have an AMT style folded ribbon tweeter that is amazing. They sound great with modern music and movies, but I also listen to a lot of 60's jazz vinyl and classical CD's, soul, classic country, blues, exotica, etc.. Basically I missed that big room filling sound of big box speakers with a dedicated woofer in a 3 way design. I did a lot of research on all the new reissue vintage speakers and the reviews consistently sounded like these would do it. That was totally accurate! Now solo piano, and jazz ensembles have a more natural live quality that I absolutely love. More air around the instruments and a sense of the room they were recorded in. The other genres I mentioned are also sounding brand new and just right now. I have to also agree with reviews that the tweeter might be the weak link in these. Some have described it as slightly grainy and I think that's fair, but I'm coming from an ultra smooth tweeter in my other speakers. That slight grain sounds exciting on older vinyl, but can be less so on modern digital productions. The mids are really good though. Vocals often sounded slightly recessed on the Goldenear's. Now I'm hearing all the way to the back of the throat, and harmonies have a wonderful separation. Bass is big, but still controlled. Also sound great for low level listening.
Pros: Room filling sound. Excellent vocal presentation. Big, but controlled bass. Sounds just right with a lot of older vinyl.
Cons: Tweeter has slight grain. Large production modern music can sometimes sound a bit messy.

BLUF: Sound fantastic and the fit & finish is superb I purchased these with the stands bundled (highly recommend you get the stands). UPS delivered the order in four boxes, heavy boxes, very well packed ... so well packed they could have even survived shipping via FedEx (we've all experienced that frustration). The speakers weigh in at 40 lbs/each and the stands are not far behind that. The beefy metal stands could easily support my weight (6'4" & 253 lbs) and are the perfect match for these speakers. Rubber bumpers provided with both the speakers and the stands give good support and separation between the stands/speakers. I'm driving the Lintons with a PrimaLuna Evo300 Tube Integrated, 36-wpc max, and the Lintons sound fantastic. I'm finding in my 2-channel setup, no sub is required with these. They have lots of low end with their 8" woofer, cabinet volume, and dual port design. Mids & highs leave me wanting nothing, just an all around great speaker. It's certainly a personal choice, but I love the look of these, especially with the real wood walnut and matching stands. I also like the ability to store LPs in the stands. Sufice to say, these are keepers! Very highly recommended!!

The Lintons are really a very special speaker. Very good bass, very good midrange and sweet smooth highs. When I first hooked them up to my Rogue Cronus Magnum 2, I was a little disappointed. But to make a long story short, these speakers need some special attention to set up and break in. After approximately 150 hours of playing time and playing with positioning these babies are awesome. They sound very good with the Rogue but absolutely beautiful with the Pass XA 25. I own much more expensive speakers but the Lintons are truely something special.

I love these speakers! I got them to replace B&W 603's and these are much more musical, while the B&W had more detail. These are so easy to listen to and have great bass and a nice warm sound. I wasn't sure I'd like these more than the 603's but the Linton's are much speakers for me. Highly recommended!

I've only got a few days on these, but so far I am really enjoying them. They have a warm presentation, and are pretty forgiving of questionable recordings. Very musical, fun, and full-bodied. Not analytical or highly resolving, but pretty well balanced. For the money, they're hard to beat if this is the type of voicing you're after. My other speakers are from Totem and PMC, so these are a nice complement to those. The low end is solid and extended. I tried both with and without a sub and they get by juuuust fine without. The most interesting was crossing over at 40hz with the sub to get that bottom octave, but this is really not needed. Mids are laid back and warm, but balanced. The high end is subdued by audiophile standards, but they still sounds modern. Just a bit less bright than some. They take eq well (tried them with a Schiit Loki Mini+) so would probably work in home theater but I haven't tried that. I've driven them with an ancient Adcom amp and a slightly less ancient Rotel. While reasonably efficient, bear in mind the 6 ohm nominal load that can dip to 3.5 ohms. They really like current. At low to mid volume on the Adcom they sound incredible, but once I get past the class A/B bias point on that amp they start to fall down (this is no fault of the speaker, it's the design of the amp). The Rotel is double the power and handles 4ohm loads better, so it did a better job. Highly recommended.

I went from Evo 4.2 to Linton. Linton proved to be smooth, dynamic and punchy compared to Evo 4.2. For certain hi-res music Evo 4.2 was even bright for my ears as well as fatiguing. I paired Linton with Cambridge CXA81 integrated amp and CXNv2 streamer. This combination is just perfect to drive Lintons. I am still streaming music but haven't played cds or vinyl yet. The Linton sound punchy and easy to listen. I have SB 1000 sub to supplement lower frequencies. The treble is just right without any harshness. I think Lintons are easygoing with all kinds of music, good soundstage, imaging, punchy bass, clear mids and smooth highs. Very pleased with the performance thus far.

Perfect example of the British sound.

Before buying these, read up on the "British Sound" these speakers offer. It's a more relaxed presentation, not in your face shrill, meaning you won't get ultra detailed highs some prefer. You will get amazing midrange and excellent lows. Don't get me wrong, the highs are there, just not the kind that hurt your ears after a long listening session. This same style also applies to some really big names in audio like Audio Note, Harbeth, Graham Chartwell and Spendor, among others. In my opinion, to get the most dynamically out of these, pair them with a solid state amp with 100 wpc or more. I put them in a small living room setup with a Peachtree 150 integrated. After a loooong break in period of about 200 hours, they sound wonderful. Note that I prefer the British presentation. I can listen to these all day long without any fatigue. Soundstage is deep and broad, and I find the detail perfect for my listening requirements. I listen to jazz, rock and weird stuff. Complaints about looks are subjective. I happen to love the simple style and walnut veneer. Reminds me of speakers from the 70's as a teen. Perfect for my mid-century modern decor in my home. Lastly, I purchased the open box version and saved a few hundred bucks. Same as new. I didn't buy the stands as I already have adequate stands. I cannot recommend these enough. One of the better audio bargains on the market today.

Wasn't planning on getting new speakers, but one of my old beloved Linn speakers was dying. I couldn't stop admiring the looks of the Linton's, so I splurged a bit. I don't have them set up optimally, much too close to the wall because they are in a small living room, but even so I am mighty impressed. Some people really knew what they were doing when they designed these. They are a feast for two of the five senses (they don't have a smell, I haven't tasted them and try not to touch them too much). I'd say they have the midrange purity and overall relaxed sound associated with BBC heritage monitors like Spendor and Harbeth, but to my ears they are a little more energetic than those lines and, if nothing else, a relative bargain. The furniture-like appearance is a big plus, since I needed to integrated them into a living room. It's true that they're a little boxy sounding considered to most modern speakers, but for me this does not detract from musical enjoyment. When I'm done with one record, I want to play another. Then another. Wouldn't ask for more than this from a pair of speakers. Should add that it would be rather criminal to get these without the matching stands, especially when they are packaged together at a discount. Props to Crutchfield for friendly and efficient service.
Pros: Resolving and beautiful midrange, full and natural bass, sound good from any listening position, zero listener fatigue (for this listener, anyway). Furniture quality veneer.
Cons: Need some clearance to sound their best (as do most modern speakers). They have a distinct relaxed British vibe, which will not please everybody.

Might Need a Lot of Room to Perform their Best
I have been running KEF R3 and Polk LSiM 703 bookshelf speakers for the last few years. I thought I'd try the Linton in order to get a bigger sound and a bit more bass, and maybe better low volume fullness. In my experience and in my room, the Lintons did did those things, but there was a trade-off in soundstage and imaging that didn't work for me. In short, they are box speakers that are somewhat boxy sounding, at least in my space. To be fair, I have practical constraints for positioning of speakers in my living room, and was probably not giving them enough breathing room (maxed out with rear of speaker about 18" from the front wall). Straight ahead or toed-in, they just did not do the trick for me sonically, and due to their size they were pretty visually overbearing in my space. If you have a dedicated listening space you can probably address the concerns I have, and you might rate them much higher. I've reverted to 20-year-old Thiel CS1.5s that are working out better than my prior bookshelves, and do imaging magic: sonically (and nearly visually) disappearing in the room (but with less bass weight and thinner low-volume sound compared to the Lintons). Trade-offs.
Pros: Deep bass. Relatively sensitive. Beautiful finish and retro looks. Amazing quality stands.
Cons: A bit boxy-sounding. Large and visually present in a room. With the stands, they are basically large floorstanders. Grilles tricky to remove (I gave up).

Real speakers, true sound

My son in law was gifted the walnut variant of the Linton and I got to burn through about 10 hours of trying to remove what is left of my hearing. Great speakers that are "real speakers", aka three way speakers. I dont recall much of the seventies, most folks that lived through that decade share that fog, but they sound "complete", like the musicians are rendering their wares in your room. As for the packaging, one can hope that Wharfdale can perhaps update their packaging to use recycled whiners from Santa Cruz, CA as those whiners aren't good for much else.

Cons: Since I'm a skinflint they could sell for less....but I drive a $4000 car so maybe thats just me.

My previous speakers were the Martin Logan Motion 40 towers which are great speakers but had too much treble energy for my listening space that had angled ceilings. I love a warm midrange sound which the Motion 40's lacked (they were more neutral or almost cool sounding in the upper midrange). These speakers did not disappoint. They are charming speakers that beg you to play them louder. This is the quality I was looking for as I love rock music, new and old, and I like to listen loud. These are not the airiest tweeters but I like that. I am driving them with my Parasound A21+ which I am sure is overkill but these never harden at loud volumes...just incredible! Build quality of the speakers and stands is top notch for the money. Would definitely recommend these!

End game speakers for me

I received the Lintons yesterday after returning a pair of Klipsch Rp-6000F loudspeakers. I reviewed the Klipsch speakers favorably elsewhere on this site but I felt something was missing, mainly warmth and a cohesive sound. With the Klipsch, the midrange would get harsh with higher volumes. Although the treble was sweeter, it was still too much. For example, I listened to Fleetwood Mac's excellent remastered FLAC album Rumours. With the Klipsch , I had to repeatedly turn down the volume. With the Lintons, the midrange is magical and not strident or fatiguing. It encourages you to turn up the volume. The soundstage is huge when set up properly and the imaging terrific. The bass is tight, has impact, and is not woolly if kept away from rear walls. The treble, although not as detailed as the Klipsch horn, is smooth and has enough detail for me. I run a Marantz NR-1200 receiver / streamer and the combination is perfect. I run it pure direct and the music is magical. They will play loud and I will eventually upgrade to a separate power amplifier since they're at 6 Ohm nominal impedance and I believe can be even more transparent with high current. Lastly, the speakers are beautiful, book matched real walnut veneers, heavy and gorgeous with the matching stands that are necessary. I can't believe you get this much speaker with the classic BBC sound for this price. Highly recommended

Sound wise four stars. They lack sizzle in the highs but otherwise really great sound. They lose another star for their packaging. It obscenely wasteful, non-recyclable and non- biodegradable. Reviews claim their design and sound reflect the 1970s. That's fine but having such a 70s attitude to wastefullness is not.

For the last twenty years I have had Definitive Technology tower speakers as well as center, rear and sub. I was going through a Yamaha home theatre receiver. So I used the tower speakers for home theater as well as for listening to music. About ten years ago I started getting back into vinyl after I realized how bad CD's sounded. Lately, the sound of the tower speakers just didn't sound that great to me. So I scrapped everything and went with a Sonos Arc, Sub and OneSL for my home theatre use. I bought the Wharfedale Linton and matching stands and paired them with a Yamaha amplifier. Just a plain amplifier, no receiver. The first thing I played on them was Hotel California on vinyl. Wow, I couldn't believe the difference in the sound. I heard things in the recording I never heard before. I had the same results when streaming music. The speakers are very pleasant to the ears, never harsh sounding. Wonderful open feel. The lesson here is listen to music on stereo speakers, not all-in-one home theatre speakers. You won't believe the difference. I couldn't be more pleased.

Wharfedale Linton Heritage

These speakers have been playing great music since the day I received them. I was searching for a small floorstander and came across some great reviews of the Linton Heritage. Although these are categorized as bookshelf speakers they perform way beyond their size. I have the Lintons paired with a Marantz sacd player and an Accuphase E-270 integrated amplifier and Transparent Audio cabling. The bass, although not super low, is very tight and accurate. The bass performance will not disappoint the listener at all assuming a quality amplifier is present. The midrange is smooth and pulls you into the music, as any good midrange is supposed to do. The treble is very pleasing with no harshness or excessive qualities. The overall sound is very balanced meaning that none of the sound is too forward in it's presentation. Wharfedale has done a great job building a high quality speaker. The speaker has very traditional looks and blends well in the home especially with wood furniture. I purchased the walnut finish and it looks terrific with a little lean toward gray/brown versus what one would expect as a typical walnut color. Crutchfield did an excellent job delivering these units. I have not written many reviews over the years although I am an avid audio listener. I wanted this review to be seen especially by those who might be "on the fence" regarding the purchase of the Linton Heritage and know how pleased I have been with them. No regrets here!
Pros: A very seamless and neutral performance with very musical tendencies. This speaker bridges beautifully between a bookshelf and a floorstander. The quality of construction is impeccable. A wonderful addition to any system.

Beautiful Classic Design and Sound

I was coming from a set of Klipsch Heresy III that were smack in your face all the time. There is nothing warm or inviting about them but there was something magical when you played Led Zepplin on Vinyl at volumes that most people including my wife would cringe at. However, I'm getting older and those volumes very rarely get pushed and my listening style has changed dramatically. I sit back now and actually listen to what's being played at low to mid volumes. I have had a lot of equipment over the years and as much as I had loved my Klipsch they just didn't do it for me anymore. I wanted something warm, inviting, robust that I haven't had in a long time. I shopped around for weeks, read 100's of reviews and watched 100's of videos before I decided to pick these up. Skeptical due to there price for a 3 way design. They can't possible sound better then some of classics I have had over the years costing triple or quad what these cost. Well I can say after putting at 100 hrs on them with a tube pre and solid state amp 100 watts into 4 ohms, they are without a doubt a fantastic sounding speaker. Can you get better in this price range and up? You would have to dish out significantly more money to get what your getting here. Very Very happy with this purchase as these maybe the last set I ever own...

Can't beat the price to performance. Cabinet is beautiful and rock solid. They make quality recordings come to life. Don't need a sub with music unless it's set below 40Hz and perfectly blended.
Cons: Bass can be boomy if placed to close to the wall. Can get unwanted vibration without the rubber feet between the cabinet and stand. Some equipment can make them sound harsh on the top end.

First off, they seem bigger in person once they are out of the boxes and sitting on top of the very sturdy stands. Great craftsmanship. I have the walnut set. I'm still re-arranging my gear so I have not placed the speakers into their final spots, but in the meantime I have been listening to them and trying to break them in. Initial thoughts were amazement of the clarity, imaging, and layered depth of the music I played through them. I could hear the sounds of various instruments playing from the speakers and then the sound of vocals perfectly centered in between them. I'm hearing things I've never heard before in much of the music I listened to. The sweet spot is truly an immersive experience. There is a nice amount of bass present and it seems very punchy but not overpowering. I do like to use a sub with the setup but I'm still tweaking that out too. By themselves with no sub woofer reinforcement and no sound adjustments, the speakers offer a full range sound and provide an openness that I haven't heard since the last set of "wide" speakers I relinquished 20 years ago. Vocals come across as smooth and wonderful. I could listen to these things endlessly. Vinyl sounds great too. They are replacing an Atlantic Tech HSB 3.1 soundbase. Oh boy, what a change. I am driving them with a Yamaha RX-A2040 receiver. They play loudly and cleanly. My receiver doesn't have any problems powering the speakers, but it certainly gets a little warm to the touch. BU

I received these right at Xmas. They are driven by a KT88/6N7GT tube amplifier, 48w. Silvered speaker wire. I played a variety of music on the speakers: Cluyens Berlin Phil Beethoven's 9th; Dwight Yoakum sings Buck; CSN&Y Deja Vu; Rolling Stones Let it Bleed; Fitzgerald w/ Basie; Benny Goodman Sing, Sing, Sing; Brubeck Take 5; RL Burnside on Burnside; Basie/Fitzgerald. Something to get out of the way quickly: it'll take +/- 50hrs to break them in. The bass is strong to below 40hz and well controlled. It is well controlled and bass notes are well defined. Accoustic bass sounds appropriately woody; electric bass and bass drum / tympani do not boom. The mids are strong with refined nuance if present in the source. Harrison's electric guitar sounds like a guitar, and identifiable by make. Piano sounds the way the hammer sounds when striking. The treble is well extended. Violins can be piercing in the upper registers, the Lintons can be allow the treble to come through with definition. Cymbals shimmer. Brass assertive and musical. Soprano when loud is not irritating but is both powerful and lovely. Massed choir is not a muddle, and individual voices appear discernible. Lintons keep up with driving rhythm (Gene Krupa; Burnside trance blues. They work well w/ a slight toe-in. The stands could be taller. I use hockey pucks as isolation under both stands and speakers, so they are 2 inch higher. Sound like my old Snells (35yr ago) & more balanced

Really enjoying the big sound with these. They're beautifully made, solid and gorgeous. Only thing minus is the top end is a bit unrefined, but that might change with further break in, I've only had them for a month. Overall very happy with the Lintons! Matching stands are excellent, highly recommended.

Very nicely built speakers. Excellent definition and separation. Packaging was very impressive, included white gloves. Stands are very heavy and sturdy.

Been listening to the Lintons almost a month and they're making me smile. They're beautiful in both sound and appearance, exuding craftsmanship and quality. They're heavy! The classic design and character is just about perfect for what I wanted. I'm currently driving them with a Harmon/Kardan stereo receiver pushing approximately 80wpc@8 ohms and 100wpc@6 ohms. They perform really well with this combination. Midrange is silky smooth and powerful while treble is almost as smooth with slightly less forwardness. Bass is somewhat reserved (as it's still an 8" woofer which is not large by any means), but that's not what I'm after anyway. I've played them paired with a sub and it's big-room perfection. If you have them in a smaller room it may be optional but they sound awesome accompanied by a sub. Since I intend to keep them, I'll order the stands now. Highly recommended!

Great for LPs and vintage sound!

Thanks to an informative and entertaining visit with Tyler I had to end way too soon because of a meeting on my end, I ordered these speakers. Had not upgraded my speakers since purchasing my Polks in 1984. These are for listening exclusively to my LPs with a vintage Pioneer SX-780. Went with walnut finish for "classic" look - they came flawless. A few hours in and all I can say is they are an amazing upgrade for my vinyl collection and I'm really enjoying them. Anything from Led Zeppelin/classic rock to jazz (especially the vocals and instrumental nuances in the jazz LPs) is simply terrific! Bass great, mid-range super and I'm not sensing any issues with the treble at all that some say just needs some breaking in, but if it's possible for these to sound better, I'm all ears, lol. Great service! Also got the stands - solid as can be and each holds more than the 25 albums some reviewers out there (who probably didn't fill them up) claimed they would hold.
Pros: Clear, crisp, plenty of bottom end.

Received the pair of Linton Heritage speakers w stands within 2 days of my order placement so was able to pull them out and set them up for the weekend. The speakers and stands LOOK AWESOME! I got the Mahogany setup and they are beautiful. I disconnected my Def Tech BP30's (24 years old) and tied the Heritages into the Emotiva XPA-DR3 and fired them up. They SOUND as AWESOME as they Look! Tuned them a little by playing with the graphic equalizer on the Marantz SR8012 and ended up with them about 24" off the back wall and toed in slightly. They do like the power and at 6 ohms, they draw what they need. Plenty of nice tight base with clear distinctive vocals and the sweet highs from the warm tweeter. It is truly hard to believe that they fill my 18' x 22' living room so well especially from speakers this size!
Pros: Great sound from a rather small package. The stands are awesome as they were already assembled and match perfectly. Price was right (I feel like I stole them for this price!). 2 Day delivery (just in time for weekend!).

I've had beautiful Wharfedale speakers since 1971. They a nice to look at with soothing to the eye warm, real wood cabinets. They are a tradition unto themselves and fit with any furniture genre. The sound is impeccable. At low or high volumes still clear and precise tones. They have never failed to deliver and trustworthy friends that never fail to deliver.

these are book matched pairs!!! WOW. I have been around stereos longer than I would like to admit and have made some of my own speakers as well.So, turn it turns out I was at my neighbors house just the other day maybe a 6 or more thousand dollar system , maybe 5 ft. tall (Thiel) and I am telling you these sweet sounding little honeys (ha,,,40 lbs. ea.) favorably compare but sometimes have a sweet twinkle on top! I LOVE these!!!
