Yamaha HA-L7A amp with YH-5000SE headphones

A top-notch personal audio listening rig.

The large headphones offer a lighter feel than you might expect, and the combination deliver an even-keeled, breezy listening experience to match. It's at once revealing and detailed, while also forgiving of less-than-pristine recordings and tracks. Let's face it, some of our favorite and most moving tunes aren't exactly the cleanest productions — but the Yamaha system effortlessly delivered our entire genre-spanning playlist with spaciousness and well-defined sense of place.

Cutting-edge take on a classic headphone design

The YH-5000SE open-back headphones serve as the company's striking new flagship, and a nod to their personal audio roots. These are the first Yamaha 'phones in over 30 years to use Orthodynamic drivers — their take on the planar magnetic principle.

As you can imagine, Yamaha has taken major leaps when it comes to build materials, structural engineering, and acoustic design. These special headphones are crafted alongside the company's legendary grand pianos at their famed Kakegawa, Japan factory. And they're tuned to sound musical and dynamic with vivid accuracy and resolution.

Robust, dynamic, and versatile

While the HA-L7A complements the YH-5000SE well, the amp can power any set of headphones or IEMs in the range of 32 to 600 ohms. The front panel offers an unbalanced 1/4" headphone output along with balanced 4.4mm and XLR4 connections. And the amp certainly delivers plenty of clean power. Yamaha uses their unique "floating and balanced" system that's been a key stalwart of their legendary two-channel amps for years. This amp can deliver quick bursts of power when needed for abrupt peaks and valleys in music.

Built-in DAC and Yamaha DSP

There are several digital and analog inputs in the back of the amp, including a USB Type-B port for connecting a computer. Yamaha uses a high-grade ESS 32-bit DAC to squeeze out more musical detail from digital audio sources — including Spotify®, Apple Music®, Qobuz, and YouTube. It is also the first headphone amp to ever feature Yamaha's famed CINEMA digital signal processing (DSP). There are six different "sound field" modes, so you can choose the proper acoustic vibe for the listening moment.

    Headphone Amplifier

Overview: The YH-5000SE is Yamaha's newest flagship model over-ear headphone that uses an Orthodynamic® driver to immerse you in sound. The headphones are hand-built by skilled craftsmen at the Kakegawa factory in Japan, where many other top-of-the-line Yamaha products are made, including grand pianos and audiophile audio components. The YH-5000SE comes with two types of earpads, two types of headphone cables, and a dedicated headphone stand.

Orthodynamic Driver: The YH-5000SE's Orthodynamic driver made its debut in 1976 with the famous HP-1 headphone. The newly redesigned driver takes advantage of 21st century technology and materials to deliver Yamaha's True Sound concept. As the world's leading manufacturer of musical instruments, Yamaha is dedicated to reproducing sound as the artist intended, with detail, accuracy, and emotion. The Orthodynamic driver is a type of planar magnetic driver with a circular spiral-shaped coil and circular thin-film diaphragm with concentric circle corrugation to maintain its shape. The driver is more responsive than a dynamic driver, and offers superior high-frequency performance with low distortion.

Open-Back Design: The headphone's large housing and ear cup total envelops the ear. Its open-back design allows air to flow in and out the large acoustic chamber to prevent sound reflections and eliminate distortion. A new Japanese-designed rolled plain Dutch weave stainless steel filter controls the air pressure inside the housing. Inside the chamber, an arch-shaped protrusion reflects the sound to provide accurate reproduction and proper control of the vocals and musical instruments. The result is a smooth, highly accurate reproduction of the music.

Headphone Construction: The YH-5000SE is built with lightweight materials that make it comfortable to wear for long sessions without fatigue. The earcup has a lightweight and rigid magnesium body that dampens vibration. The two-layer headband has a stainless steel band that exerts lateral pressure to holds the earcups to your head. The thick, stitched leather head pad evenly disperses the weight and pressure of the headphone for a comfortable fit. You can make fine adjustments to the headband with the stepless slider for a precise, comfortable fit. The headphones have an inclined swivel mechanism that lets the earcups fit any size head.

Earpads: Two distinctly different types of earpads are included with the YH-5000SE. The leather earpad features soft sheepskin at the point of skin contact that offers some absorption of moisture and protection from odor. The outer ring is a flexible synthetic leather with small perforations for ventilation. The inside mesh provides ample air circulation without obstructing or altering the sound. The suede earpads are made of Ultrasuede® by Toray Industries. The soft non-woven material has the texture of suede with a comfortable feel against the skin. The earpads have 4 locking tabs that make them easy to remove and replace. Replacement earpads can be obtained directly from Yamaha.

Cables: The Yamaha YH-5000SE headphones come with two high-quality braided cables made with highly-conductive silver-coated OFC (oxygen-free copper). The unbalanced cable has a specially designed 3.5mm 3-pole plug. For audio components and professional consoles, a 3.5mm-to-6.3mm (1/8"-to-1/4") screw-type adapter is included. The balanced cable features a 4.4mm (pentaconn) 5-pole plug that works with many headphone amplifiers and DACs. Balanced cables provide a stronger signal, and are less susceptible to induced RF and EFI noise, compared to unbalanced (single-ended) cables. Both cables are 79" (2 meters) in length, and attach to the earcups with left and right 3.5mm plugs. Replacement cables can be obtained directly from Yamaha.

Headphone Stand: The YH-5000SE comes with an aluminum and copper alloy headphone stand (HST-5000) for hanging your headphones between listening sessions. When assembled, the stand is 4-5/8" x 11-1/8" x 5-3/4" (WxHxD). It weighs approximately 34-1/2 ounces.

    Headphone Specifications:

    • Frequency Response: 5 Hz to 70 kHz
    • Sensitivity: 98dB/mW (at 1 kHz)
    • Impedance: 34Ω (at 1 kHz)
    • Weight: 11.3 ounces
    Headphone Amplifier

Overview: The Yamaha HA-L7A is a standalone headphone amplifier with a built-in digital-to-analog converter (DAC). It has four inputs and five outputs (3 headphone outs and 2 line outs). Not only can you connect headphones, you can connect the unit to an external amplifier or a pair of powered speakers. This unique L-shaped desktop component features heavy duty construction and a highly rigid aluminum and steel frame to suppress vibrations which can negatively impact the sound. The HA-L7A is supported by five conical solid steel feet for exceptional stability. The headphone amp comes with a wireless remote control, USB cable, and power cord.

D/A Converter: The HA-L7A is equipped with the ultra-high performance ESS Technology ES9038PRO digital-to-analog converter. The 8-channel converter applies four channel conversion to the left and right sides, respectively, with exceptionally high-quality audio, broad dynamic range, and excellent signal-to-noise ratio (>120dB). The dedicated master clock utilizes a crystal oscillator with ultra-low phase noise for highly precise D/A conversion.

Patented Design: The headphone amplifier utilizes Yamaha's patented Floating and Balanced Power Amplifier technology. There are four sets of power amplifier circuits on the output stage, plus and minus sides of the left and right channels, all floated from ground to give you a symmetrical push-pull operation. All circuitry, including the power supply, is completely independent of the ground, so all effects of ground noise or voltage fluctuations are eliminated. The result of these technologies provide a natural, pleasing sound that lets you listen for long periods of time without fatigue.

Inputs: The HA-L7A features a wide variety of digital and analog inputs for connecting source components. A Type B USB port lets you connect your computer for listening to digital music files or stream audio. A USB-A to USB-B cable is included. Two S/PDIF digital inputs, one optical and one coaxial, are for a CD player or transport, Blu-ray, or DVD player. There is also one analog input (stereo RCA) for connecting a digital audio player or other audio source. The digital inputs are compatible with the following formats:

    • Digital Optical: PCM 2-channel: 32kHz, 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz (16-bit, 24-bit)
    • Digital Coaxial: PCM 2-channel: 32kHz, 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz, 192kHz (16-bit, 24-bit)
    • USB Type B:
      • PCM 2-channel: 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz, 192kHz, 352.8kHz, 384kHz (16-bit, 24-bit, 32-bit)
      • DSD 2-channel: 2.8MHz (DSD 64), 5.6MHz (DSD 128), 11.2MHz (DSD 256), ASIO Native, ASIO Native and DoP-compatible
Note: If connecting to a Windows computer (Windows 10 or 11), you must first install the Yamaha Steinberg USB driver. No USB driver is required for macOS (12 / 11 / 10.15 / 10.14 / 10.13)

Outputs: There are three separate output jacks for connecting one pair of headphones: XLR-4 (balanced), 4.4mm (balanced), and 6.3mm (unbalanced). You must select the appropriate jack using the Output button on the top panel. (The headphone outputs cannot be used simultaneously.) You can also connect an external amplifier (preamp or power amp) to the PRE/LINE OUT jacks via XLR or RCA cables. You must set the PRE/LINE OUT switch according to whether the connected device has its own volume adjustment features. For devices that have a volume adjustment, the switch should be set to LINE OUT. For devices without a volume adjustment, the switch should be set to PRE OUT. The Line Out Gain can be set to 0dB (audio signal is output as-is) or ATT (attenuated) if the input level going to the external amp is too loud.

Operating Panel: The HA-L7A features a unique operating panel located on the top of the unit. The three-line OLED display can be set to display the Sound Field Mode, Input/Output, or Signal Info. You can maneuver through the menu system with the <, >, and Enter buttons. You can cycle through the inputs and outputs and Pure Direct modes with dedicated buttons. Rotary dials along the right edge are for adjusting the volume and selecting the Sound Field Mode.

Initial Volume/Volume Limit: You can set a default volume when the unit is first powered up. You can choose from: Off, Mute, -70.0dB, -60.0dB, -50.0dB, or -40.0dB. The Off setting turns the unit to the volume setting used last time the product was powered off. There is also a Volume Limit that you can apply, if desired. If the HP Gain is set to HI, the maximum volume is limited to -35.0dB. If it is set to LO, the maximum volume is limited to -20.0dB.

Balance: The output volume balance between the left and right channels can be adjusted, if needed. The settings range from Left +10.0dB to 0.0dB to Right +10.0dB. When Pure Direct is selected, the audio plays back at 0.0dB (center), regardless of setting.

Toroidal Transformers: The headphone amplifier utilizes dual toroidal transformers mounted to the top of the main frame. One transformer is used in the front stage for signal processing, while the other is used in the second stage for amplification. Toroidal transformers also reduce magnetic flux leakage. The transformers have bifilar windings to minimize voltage variations for a more stable power supply. Because of their natural vibrations, the transformers are securely mounted to a 2mm thick steel plate on the top of the chassis.

Sound Field Modes: The HA-L7A offers six Sound Field modes that shapes the sound specific for music, video, and other specific sources. These modes utilize unique signal processing and multi-channel expansion technologies developed over the years by Yamaha for its AV components. The default setting is "Straight," playing the sound without applying a sound field effect. Using the top-mounted rotary knob, you can select from the following sound field modes:

    • Cinema: The Cinema Mode gives greater presence and sense of immersion to movies with action scenes.
    • Drama: Drama Mode enhances dialog and increases the enjoyment of dramas, animated shows, variety shows, and other content where voice is important.
    • Music Video: Music Video mode gives a comfortable spatial placement of vocals and musical instruments for enjoying music videos and other content.
    • Concert Hall: Concert Hall mode simulates the echoes and space of a live concert in a large hall, making you feel you are a part of the venue.
    • Outdoor Live: Outdoor Live mode creates an open-air feeling of an outdoor setting.
    • Background Music (BGM): BGM mode uses Yamaha's proprietary high-definition HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) technology to position the sound outside of your head for a more relaxing listening experience.

Pure Direct: The Pure Direct function bypasses all circuitry not present in the original input source, such as the DSP processing and analog-to-digital converters. It delivers a pure signal direct to the headphones, allowing you to enjoy all of the subtle nuances of the music. You can select Pure Direct via a dedicated button on the top panel or wireless remote.

DAC Filters: The HA-L7A features eight types of digital filters that you can select from the menu. The filters include: Fast Linear, Slow Linear, Fast Minimum, Slow Minimum, Apodizing Fast, Hybrid Fast, Brickwall, and Short Latency.

DAC Lock Range: In the menu, you can set the level of the DAC Lock to reduce jitter and improve sound quality. Level 2, the middle setting, is the default. Level 1 reduces the DAC precision slightly, which makes the sound much less prone to interruptions due to changes in the digital clock. Level 3 increases the precision of the DAC, which may cause interruptions in sound on certain audio devices.

Auto Standby: When Auto Standby is set to On, the HA-L7A will automatically enter standby mode when there are no operations or music playback for 20 minutes. Thirty seconds before entering Standby mode, the display will indicate the unit is about to shut itself off.

Wireless Remote: The included wireless remote control (VFN4930) gives you full control of the HA-L7A in the palm of your hand. The remote lets you directly choose the Input, cycle through the Outputs, and power the unit on or off. You can also directly select Pure Direct and cycle through the Sound Fields. The remote lets you maneuver through the menu selections and adjust the volume/mute. The remote requires 2 AA batteries (included).

Firmware Updates: Occasionally, Yamaha will provide firmware updates to add new features, or to correct errors that arise. To update the firmware, you must download the firmware onto a USB flash drive from the Yamaha website, and load it to the headphone amp through the dedicated "Update Only" USB-A port on the back panel. Specific instructions can be found in the User Guide (downloaded from the Yamaha website). The current firmware version can be viewed on the unit's display in the settings menu.
