Nice upgrade over not having a back-up camers
Ed from DACULA, GA on 5/27/2025
Let's be honest. Taking a component that starts outside a vehicle, bringing it inside, and then wiring the whole interior length of a car is not the easiest task for an amateur (apparently some professionals struggle with it too). After watching some Crutchfield Videos and Vehicle Specific YouTube Videos, I got a good idea on the path I wanted to take, and it worked out well. This item was fairly easy to install. I say fairly because I haven't gotten the lights on the camera to work. I know I grounded and tapped into the reverse light wire, but maybe i don't have a strong connection. (Wish I would have just tapped into my license plate lights) Everything else about this install was "easy" and worked as expected. This camera connected/worked easily with my new Boss BE920WCPA Head Unit. The video feed is a bit grainy and it's not the sharpest of images. However, I've found it to be responsive and for the price, a pretty good option.
Pros: Fairly easy install
Cons: Bit grainy video feed

Looks good, but
Patrick from Rock Island, TN on 3/19/2025
The camera looks like good quality plenty of wire to run. My only complaint really is I have not got to test it out yet, but the ground and the hot wire to go to your reverse lights is the smallest gauge wire I have ever seen really hard to splice in to a connector how small it is And afraid that it'll just rip out of the connectors at some point in time

Installed camera on 2002 2500HD Silverado. Hookup was fairly simple, and I tied wiring into backup lights for reverse only. Picture is pretty good but a little grainy looking. For the price though you can't really complain. Jury is still out on the active backup parking lines. I may wind up cutting the jumper since my stereo has the option of displaying as well.

Camera quality is garbage compared to my low dollar "on line special" I have in my other car. Decent BC for the Price
Nathan from FAYETTEVILLE, GA on 9/3/2024
This inexpensive backup camera works well enough for the price point. The camera is easily mounted to a standard license plate, and the wiring is thin enough to push behind panels and to route through tight spots. I drilled a hole through the rear of a 2007 Nissan Frontier floor panel and installed a rubber grommet to fit the larger ends of the cable through the cab. There are a few down sides to this camera. The power and ground wire are extremely small, so be careful when cutting. The resolution is not fantastic but it works. The low point for me is the parking lines are useless, as they jump all over the monitor and lack consistency.
Pros: Price
Cons: Low quality

Finally my van has a backup camera. I was in parallel parking and couldn't see below the back glass of my 2004 Sienna van. But with this, everything was visible in the rear and the field of view was wide. I've only installed this in a week so I don't know how reliable this is , but for now it is really good and the price is really good.

Nice picture
Matt from Temecula, CA on 8/26/2024
This was not easy to install! The vehicle was a 2012 Ford Expedition, and the camera was for a back up. The wires for the reverse light ended up sort by 3-4'. I had to extend the wires to get them to my reverse light. Running the wire through the back hatch, into the headliner and the floor channel was a pain. After install the camera the backup directional indicator was incorrect. After speaking to tech support and discovered the camera is bad. They have a new camera on its way and luckily the camera wire has a plug about 10' from the camera that is easy to get to. I will have to do a little fishing but not as bad as the main run. Thank you, Tech Support!
Pros: Two part wire harness. This made the run a lot easier.
Cons: The rear power cable for the reverse light was 3-4' short. It what be nice to have that longer to reach easier.

Overall I'm very satisfied with this camera, good picture quality. I disabled the guidelines as my stereo unit had better customization for those lines. If you want this particular unit to have power while in drive, you'll need to run an additional power wire to the cab and add to switch power. Otherwise if you only want it usable when in reverse the instruction setup is fine.
Pros: Nice minimal mount bracket, good picture, decent night vision
Cons: Wiring harness doesn't account for constant power, had to run my own 18 gauge wire with it to power it for when not in reverse. Otherwise no complaints

DO NOT PURCHASE (complete garbage)
shane from CLIFTON, CO on 6/7/2024
I purchased this camera after installing it, I thought the camera was defective due to the screen being so dark and almost completely unviewable at the head unit. I contacted Crutchfield and told them of my issue. Crutchfield was very fast to replace the camera with a replacement. After installing the second camera I have the the exact same issue. This camera is a 100% unless regardless of the the outside lighting conditions. I would highly recommend the manufacturer discontinue this model and for Crutchfield not sell such a low quality item. I would really like to replace this item but don't really want to spend the half day pulling out and replacing the wiring to do so. I truly wouldn't install this item again if it were free and I couldn't be more dissatisfied .
Pros: none
Cons: con job

Functional as a camera, not for guidance in (My case)
Sam from Louisville, KY on 5/6/2024
Camera works, it is a very wide angle which works for rear view camera, the night vision is fair. The electronic guidelines are terrible (its possible that I have a camera with a bad accelerometer), I've installed the unit per instructions with voltage filter provided by Crutchfield. In my honest opinion I'd recommend a better camera if you wish to rely on the automatic guidance lines. If you have this camera, I'd cut the wire to disable guidelines and use the head unit created lines if so equipped. I also recommend installed the cable from the unit in some sort or wire loom, dielectric grease in the connector with heat shrink tubing to protect from moisture and abrasion. Mine was installed in a Dodge ram 2500 PU truck. Magnetic cable tiedowns mounts make installation way easier.
Pros: its inexpensive, easy to install, decent video quality.
Cons: Guidelines are unreliable and problematic (showing backing direction correctly or changing direction entirely a few times.

easy setup and image looks great!
Josh from Raleigh, NC on 4/28/2024
easy to setup and wire up as expected! there is some slight jitter in the image, however i think this is mostly due to being a composite (interlaced?) analogue image, but it still looks great!
Pros: image looks great! not dim or washed out connection from camera to power/video cable is skinny, so hole in car body is minimized.
Cons: images in instruction booklet are like... thumbnails and can be difficult to read.

Thomas from Rochester, MN on 4/26/2024
The camera assembly arrived in excellent condition. It worked, but failed after installation due to the power cable going to the head unit came loose due to the small Gage wire. it was so small the crimp connections would not hold the wire securely. We had to double back the wires several time to get enough thickness . The enclosed wire connectors did a better job.

This is a great camera BUT - do NOT do as the Boyo instructions in the box say and connect both the 12v to the reverse light AND the RCA Siamese red wire to the reverse trigger. You'll fry the camera. Luckily Crutchfield rocks, acknowledged the bad directions and sent me a replacement camera, which works 100% without the red wire on the RCA jack.

Drunk guidance stripes
Jelle from Anchorage, AK on 1/12/2024
This camera comes with guidance stripes that move through something you can't turn off. Unless you cut the wire and they are gone. It makes it like you go drunk down your driveway. Maybe a good idea on paved smooth driveway but not so much on a dirt one. My radio unit has the guidance stripes too so not a big deal for this install. I silicone seal the back of the camera housing to avoid water intrusion. Decent quality picture in reverse.

2008 Outback CAM
James from Carson City, NV on 1/5/2024
Initially thought the instructions must be lacking until you actually install it. The cam works well so far and integrated with my 2008 Subaru NAV unit. For Subaru owners though, be prepared for an exhaustive install since the cars are built utilizing every square inch of the car for wire harness's and fluid lines. The cars do come apart and go back together nicely, but it does take a lot of time to do it. Just glad the camera worked as well as it does for all of that effort. I would not recommend a cheaper camera purchased form other sources, too much effort is involved to save a few bucks.
Pros: Worked well as expected, no glitches.

Ok camera, big safety improvement
Al from Madison, WI on 1/3/2024
The camera works well and the video quality is fair. One important thing to note about these cameras with the license plate bracket mount - if your license plate light is directly over the center of the license plate, like mine is, the camera will block the light over the center third of the plate. It looks kind of strange at night. Plus, the license plate light will shine onto the camera body, making it appear to glow. This does not seem to cause a problem with the functioning of the camera, however. This is my first backup camera installation, and now that I have a better understanding of the installation process and the issue with the license plate light, I would have ordered the Boyo VTK601HD instead of this one. In fact, I just placed an order for one and plan to replace the VTL17IRTJ with it . There is trim piece on the rear hatch above the license plate where I can mount the replacement camera. It won't be centered, but that's ok - I've noticed many factory installed backup cameras are not centered in the rear of the vehicle.

Install was easy, you will need to find some videos on how to install cameras on your vehicle. But very simple, didn't have to tie it in the reverse light wire as it suggested, tied the red into the reverse wires at the radio we installed and it worked fine. This camera has the cartoonish like lines that help you park. The lady tried to tell me about it, but she didn't describe it very well. Luckily the stereo we got gave us a better option. Still recommend

Good unit/value
Doug from SALTILLO, MS on 11/4/2023
Read several negative reviews on this unit but there were enough positive ones that I decided to go with it. Truly, I have not been disappointed! The picture very good based on the resolution that was advertised. To get any better you will have to spend much more money and after the purchase I do not see the need. The only negative that I read and agree with is, at night in low light the picture is washed. Bested describes as foggy. When you are in a mall or shopping center parking lot a night there are no issues. The pole lights compliment the camera. As stated, this occurs only in basically no light to very low light conditions.
Pros: Great value for replacing OEM camera.
Cons: "Foggy" in low light conditions.

Camera didn't meet my expectations at all.
Vladimir from Pikesville, MD on 10/9/2023
If it's not compoleetly darlk outside, you barely can see anything on camera in the dask. It's very diffucult to strip isolation from the wires because wires are hair thin. Active parking lines suck. The active parking lines was my main cancern of buying this camera. My factory camera didn't have any parking lines (2008 Toyota Sequoia) and my head unit (Pioneer DMH-2660NEX) has just straight adjustible but not active parking lines, which I didn't like). Parking lines worked fine during the bench test, but when I installed it on the car, there is a huge delay between the steering wheel and parking lines moves. Most of the time they don't move at all. Or they move to the most Left/Right direction and stay there forever and doesn't metter where your steering wheel is turned. It was a huge pain to pull the wires through my truck, espetially wiring the camera to the stop light due to moving up/down window on the rear trunk door. So, I don't think I am up to go through this again and remove the camera from the truck and return it to Crutchfield. I just want others be aware before makeing a desision and buying this camera.
Pros: Clear picture during the day light.
Cons: Bad view whent it is dask. Wires are too thin. Active lines don't work as they supposed to.

The most difficult piece to set up but with you'll help I got working. My only issue is I don't the placement at all, I'm sure I'm gonna destroy the camera because of the location. I utilize the back often and I'm afraid I'm going to knock off and break the mount and the camera. I want to move it now, but I don't know where!!! I would summit a photo but the vehicle is in the shop getting oil change and alignment today.

The video from this camera is about the worst quality rear view camera I have seen so far. The camera in my 2007 Honda was far superior to this with a new Pioneer head unit. The active parking lines are a horrible. Following these will almost guarantee destruction in any parking lot. I would definitely be returning the camera if it weren't such a hassle to uninstall it.
Pros: maybe price?
Cons: Video quality during both day and night Active parking lines are a joke

The camera is easy to install behind the licence plate. We were able to run the wires next to the main harness on the driver's side. I drilled a hole under the plastic threshold of the back door and installed a wire grommet. We fished the wire under the door frame and up to the radio. This took some time and a coat hanger but was.not hard. Do not use the wire connectors that come with the kit. Get some proper connections with heat shrink and splice both the hot and negative to the break light.
Pros: Easy to Install
Cons: Don't use the electrical connector provided. The images are just average

Works great, good price, and install was easy with some YouTube help. I have an off center license plate, so my only suggestion for improvement would be to be able to slide the camera left or right on the mount so you can get it more centered on the car. But really, I have no complaints. Would definitely buy again.

Great little backup camera! Image is clear (at least clear enough for my purposes). Wiring involved a lot of time and careful trim removal. Don't love the "active" parking guides that bend as you turn. They work on an internal gyroscope, not in any way connected to your actual turning of the steering wheel, so can be more distracting than helpful.

A basic rear view camera.
George from COLUMBIA, SC on 3/4/2023
Camera works but daytime color is not true and the "guide" lines move in a jerky motion. The camera's "trigger" wire taps the positive 12 volts from the power source and is meant to trigger a monitor or a radio's monitor when the vehicle is placed in reverse. This wire would have been much more convenient to use than the newly purchased radio's trigger wire source which the radio's instructions said to use. The radio's instructions said to tap into a wiring harness wire next to the firewall in the engine compartment under the hood. Giving a user a heads up would be a kind gesture and would save individual installers the aggravation of running a wire through the vehicle's firewall.
Pros: Easy installation.
Cons: Poor color in daytime mode. Guide lines do not move smoothly when vehicle is turning. Only one view mode, fisheye. No straight down view or a straight back view mode.

A great safety addition and easy to install in a pick up.
George from Middleburg, FL on 1/27/2023
So I needed a rear view camera in my 2012 Ford F-150xl that would mate with a Sony AVX 5000. The helpful fellow at Crutchfield recommended this unit. The order was shipped quickly and the install was started. The instructions in the box are limited, however, there are a ton of videos by Crutchfield and others describing how the system should go in and I had no problem. I took my time and in three hours had both a Sirius XM tuner AND the Boyo rear view camera up and running
Pros: Easy to install Plenty of videos explaining how to available on YouTube; making this a simple job. All you need is patience and some tie wraps! Works very well with the Sony I'm 82, and if I can make a pro install so can you!
Cons: Included instructions limited in scope and printed in a font only an ant can see.

Great backup camera. Clear picture.
Eric from Pittsburgh, PA on 1/16/2023
Nice camera. Easy to install. Price is right and gives much clearer picture than my other car with a built in camera. A few things to know- if your head unit or monitor can generate backup lines, you probably want to use those. The ones native to the camera stink..they're narrow and they try to adjust for turning but move wildly and often the wrong direction. The ones on my boss head unit are so much better even though they are static. Also it isn't in the instructions but this camera can tap into 2 power sources. Either the rear backup light or on the head unit. If you do what I did- attach both- then you have an always on camera that you have to manually toggle from the head unit. If you just power it from the rear backup light then it'll turn on when you put it in reverse. You'll need to then attach the Reverse light + wire from the head unit to the wire next to the yellow RCA jack on the head unit end of the cable. This took me several days to figure out as I was trying to find a Reverse light + connection at the front dude box. Crutchfield gave me a location and when I spliced it in it made it so the parking brake turned on and off the camera. Whoops.
Pros: Easy to install. Great picture. Great field of view.
Cons: Baked in backup lines stink and move wildly and in the wrong direction when backing up.

Brittle Wires
Tim from Binghamton, NY on 11/29/2022
At first I was happy with the camera and included cable. The installation seemed to be going fine until I had to connect the power and ground leads for the camera. The insulation on these wires is very durable, but this was not a good match with the gauge of the wire, as the wire strippers simply cut the conductors too. I ended up carefully using a razor blade and carefully pully the insulation from the extremely brittle strands inside. It looked like the wire had half the number of conductors as the wire on the back of the Sony unit i was installing (this wire easily stripped with the strippers I had). It would be great if Boyo would change out this wire to something a little easier for the end user to work with.
Pros: Camera has nice options
Cons: Power and ground wire conductors EXTREMELY brittle.

Spent a lot of time running the wires to the lift gate on my 2013 Jetta SportWagon but when I plugged it in.nothing. I need to verify it again, seemed when I was backing up the lines moved the opposite direction I was backing up. Otherwise its a nice looking camera. Need to try out the IR on it. Wish it had another connection like the one from the camera past the block where the wires all come together. I had to install the wire backwards. I followed the wires as it came from the factory thru the boot the wires run thru into the vehicle which is a tight fit getting the AV connector thru the rear hatch to the body of the vehicle. Still adjusting the camera so the lines are on the ground not in the air.

Good Backup Camera
J Shipley from Saint Paul, MN on 8/10/2022
Once installed, this backup camera works really well on my 2014 Subaru Outback, which came without such a unit. Routing the cable required disassembly of the back gate lining, which is a bit tricky to replace, especially if you are working alone. The parking guidelines seem to respond to left-right motion of the camera image. I suppose this is useful, but it doesn't really match the vehicle steering wheel position and turning radius.
Pros: Good camera

I was disappointed with the quality of this camera. Unfortunately my helper had striped the wires and added connectors or I would have returned it. The wiring is very light scale, maybe 22 ga. Works and a decent picture. I used the direct mount and not the license plate bracket. Looks good. It's a great way to add a backup camera feature to an older car with new head unit. Not sure if all of these need a reverse wire connection front and back of the harness, but that was a bit of a pain. I ended up just running the same connection to the front from the reverse light to avoid trying to find a wire under the dash.

Weird reversing lines
Daniel from Glenn Heights, TX on 6/22/2022
It's a decent camera the resolution is ok. Not sure if that's the screen or the camera. I would advise cutting the wire for the reverse lines because they have a mind of their own. It has like a line curve feature that guesses what direction you're turning and curves the line that way. The radios lines work just fine

Bad image quality, front set up not working
Crutchfield customer from Wichita Falls, TX on 3/28/2022
Image quality is not great at all. I operate a rear camera from another company for half the price, and their image is way better. Next issue is to set it up as a front camera, which displays a mirrored image, though I cut the white loop as per the manual. Customer service isn't very helpful, as the agent was unable to use a microphone on his end which allowed clear communication. A different issue with customer service I had before, when the agent wasn't able to answer a simple question regarding my Pioneer unit, wanted to email a wiring diagram which he never did. If you praise your customer service as to be that great, live to your proposed standards.

Camera works great but wiring too thin.
Dave from Sicklerville on 12/9/2021
The Camera seems to be working great, but not after some installation problems. The wiring with this camera could be a little bigger (awg). The wiring is nowhere near typical auto wiring and breaks very easily. I would also like to thank Crutchfield Tech Support for the help that I needed to troubleshoot a wiring problem.
Pros: Great picture from camera
Cons: Installation wiring too thin

Works nicely. See installation tips.
James from EVANSVILLE, IN on 8/4/2021
It works just as advertised. Tracking lines are indeed useful. Installation was easy enough- instructions are in tiny print, but clear. The wiring from the camera head has a nice narrow connector with just over 1/8 inch diameter. To get from the license plate mount into the trunk, I chose not to destroy the existing license plate light wiring grommet. Rather, I drilled a 1/4 in hole nearby it, used a tiny 1/8 Dorman grommet (AutoZone assortment pack was $4 see pic). I used 2 snap splice connectors. Unfortunately, the grommets and splice connectors are not included in the Boyo kit. Anyways, the Boyo system allows easy replacement of the camera head, should it become damaged, via its quick connector to the rest of the wiring.
Pros: A good value
Cons: It would be nice if kit included some splice connectors

Good Camera with Good Options
Crutchfield customer from Wildwood, MO on 7/6/2020
Nice camera with decent picture. The backup guide lines turn when you turn but they look a little low res and grainy. I turned those off by using the "cut line" in favor of my receivers backup lines. It installed and worked perfectly on the first try.
Pros: Power and RCA cables are combined into one cable making it easy to simplify all your connections in one place. Multiple mounting options are nice.
Cons: If you use the "cut lines" to change settings, those wires are so tiny, you may not be able to reconnect them if you want to go back to the original settings.

Camera works but website picture of wires incorrect
Crutchfield customer from Hampton, VA on 6/30/2020
1. First, this product does not come with the three piece wire set-up shown in the picture on the Crutchfield website. The wiring shown would allow the camera to be wired always on plus triggered in reverse or only on when triggered in reverse. However, the product received only has two wire pieces and cannot be wired always on with the wiring supplied despite the assurance from tech support that it could. What you will have to do in this case is run your own separate wire from the rear red wire to the radio ACC, and ground the rear black wire (no fun to discover after you have already run the main wire to the radio). Then connect the reverse trigger wire from the radio to the reverse light wire under the dash. Do not get this camera if you desire the always on option. If you only want the camera to be triggered on when in reverse, then you won't have any problem. 2. I give 3 stars since the camera did work Fine after extra effort for wiring. 3. Camera installed on 2010 Honda Civic.
Pros: 1. Wait time for Crutchfield tech support very short. 2. Crutchfield Tech support courteous and professional.
Cons: Wiring supplied not designed for always on option.

Nice Upgrade to 2006 Suburban
William from JERSEY SHORE, PA on 5/10/2020
Purchased for use with a Pioneer DMH-1500NEX. Camera integrated nicely with the Pioneer, and there was plenty of cable to run from the dash to rear of a 2006 Suburban. I ran the cable along the drivers side under the trim, and did the final connections behind the tail light. I was able to tie the power leads into the reverse light wiring at the taillight. Connection to the Pioneer was a simple RCA input. Camera provides a nice clear image. Backup lane indicators do turn with the steering wheel...not super precise, but I like the fact they do help tell you which direction you are headed. Overall, it is a great addition, especially for a larger vehicle.

Good Value - Nice Back-up Camera
Crutchfield customer from Weston, MA on 4/15/2020
Purchased and installed this unit to go with my Pioneer AHV-221EX in my 2013 Silverado Regular Cab. Camera mounts easily and works well. Running cable to head unit was quite involved, but that is vehicle specific. Very good / clear pictures day and night. I was going to purchase auxiliary back up lights if warranted, but they were not required. I like the optional back up lines and ability to reverse the field of view if necessary. I would have to say that this is as good as you'll get to a stock back-up camera for a vehicle that did not come with one.
Pros: Good pics day and night. Nice aftermarket device.

I've never really been one for camera's and I still and hopefully will always rely on my mirrors but I got this mostly for my wife and my teenage boy to use BUT having said that I will say that this camera works way better than some of the other cameras that I've seen out there. The image/picture is great, especially in dark or low light situations. I'll have to get more used to the lines turning on the display when my wheels are turned. Still haven't quite figured that part out yet but again I'm still spending more time using my mirrors.........just an old school guy, but overall a great camera and glad I bought and installed it.

Not that great
Robert from MARLBOROUGH, NH on 3/12/2020
Purchased this backup cam by request from Crutchfield sales rep while on their website. Camera just barely reached 1yr since purchased and so many things wrong with it. For a while, I thought the actual picture was very poor - the guidance lines acted as if the camera was on the front of my vehicle. The images was mirrored when it was not supposed to be. That was in the beginning of it's life with me. Skip to now, the screen will give me either a black screen when reversing, an upside down screen, flip back to normal with no guidelines screen, a screen that really resembles a CVT footage, or flip a couple of times while reversing. Needless to say, it is not my idea of a backup camera. I know we always want to try and save money somewhere - but maybe cheap isn't necessarily good. I reached out to Crutchfield tonight to see if they can help me out with a replacement. Hoping it does not have to be the same one, but I am pretty sure it will be. Good luck! I know not everyone will experience the same thing.
Pros: Cheap and easy to install
Cons: Poor Manufacturer instructions - Poor picture quality - Poor design (a bit flimsy and sticks out - barely made it a fully year.

Installed per the instructions. Camera worked for a few days then starting to come on for a sec the screen went black. Crutchfield sent a replacement and I installed it. It started doing the same thing after a few days. Frustrated I called Crutchfield tech support and they said I should power the camera from the aux power instead of the reverse tail light power as called for in the installation instructions. That involves installing a relay on the reverse light and pulling more wire. I just didn't have it in me to crawl under the truck again so I procrastinated. Meanwhile the camera started working just fine...I don't know why. I gave it a two stars because of my troubles. I would have given it a 5 otherwise as I like the camera and the image is good for the price point.

A review and some info
Rob from Newport News, VA on 7/6/2019
I installed two Boyo VTL17IRTJ cameras recently, specifically for rear view use (backup). These cameras do the job nicely. The installation is not likely to be quick and easy. The instructions are minimal and the print is abominably small. (What were they thinking?) Routing the cable is probably going to be the hardest part of the installation. You are likely to have to drill a hole in your car and pull down some trim. Get a set of trim removal tools. They are cheap. You will have to hunt up at least a back-up lamp or reverse indicator connection and a ground to connect to. Once installed, you will find that you have parking guidelines in the view, unless you cut the blue wire during installation to disable the option. These guides are often a love-hate thing, so be sure you can get to the blue wire easily in case you want to cut it after the installation. Some reviewers complain that the lines go off into space. This is simply because the camera is aimed too high. Tilt it down. The picture can appear washed out (saturated) during the daytime, and the colors aren't true. It seems to be a compromise so that you will have good night vision, which is when you need this thing most. This camera is well worth its price.

Camera is okay , parking lines not so good. first thing I did was cut wire to remove parking lines as the curved lines didn't seem very accurate. I am using the lines within my Kenwood receiver if I need parking lines, but I mainly use the camera for hooking a trailer to my hitch. Resolution is pretty good for a price to quality ratio.

Cons: Parking guidelines not very accurate

First experience with a back up camera, so I really have nothing to compare it to. Overall though, I'm very satisfied with it. It works well, and performs as advertised. Installation was a bear, but that's kind of to be expected when you're running wires the entire length of a vehicle, and trying to keep them completely out of sight. The actual mounting of the camera was easy, and the instructions were clear.

Nice camera that I used on my 2009 Ford Econoline Van. I hooked it to the Panasonic 4400 which I bought at the same time. I recommend you have Crutchfield make the wiring kit as it made installing this a no-brainer. The documentation with the camera was useless but it was pretty self-explanatory. I did not use the licese plate holder as this camera needs to be in the middle of the vehicle. I bolted it to the bumper.
Pros: Stupid simple
Cons: Needs to be mounted in middle of the truck.

A good price and seems fairly simple to install but the instructions provided are lacking. Still trying to figure out where the red cable on the monitor end should connect to. The picture currently has horizontal noise lines running thru it. Hopefully the image will improve once the red wire is connected. :)

Documantation lacking
Rick from Longview, WA on 12/26/2018
Instructions were all but worthless. Print was so small I needed a magnifier even with glasses. Of course the instructions only show one end of the wiring. Also listed the connection this way "(12VDC rear lamp)". What they mean is back up lamp. Didn't convert from Chinese well at all. Also the red wire that is attached to the camera RCA plug goes through to the red wire on the other end of the plug. Fail to mention that also. Watch the YouTube video it will help more than anything else out there. I have no clue why the instruction are never updated, the feedback on the defective instruction is old. It works, but don't expect much more than the typical Offshore Quality. Especially as far as the instructions are concerned.
Pros: works
Cons: Directions are worthless

Great little camera. Installation is fairly easy, depending how far you want to go to hide the wire. The documentation is not all that good and lacks an explanation of different setup options. This youtube video answered all my questions and made my install so much easier. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHORKUqlEM4). Would definitely recommend this camera
Pros: Good picture quality

Camera is okay, guidelines are worthless
Rob from Spudville, Idaho on 11/3/2018
I've had this for about 1 year now, and I finally am getting around to taking apart the back end of my Lincoln Navigator and cutting the wire for the stupid guidelines. Couple of annoying things about the guidelines: 1) There's no adjustment and they extend up too high, so it looks like it is trying to guide to to back up and fly into the sky. 2) The active parking lines are ridiculous! Since they of course don't tap in to any actual steering system, they must use G-forces to make them respond. Maybe if you always backed up at 20 mph, a design like this would work, but since I don't back up that quickly, there's just not enough g-force, so the lines lag waaaaay behind. Too bad. Seemed like a cool idea, but the reality is the sensitivity is just to low, so I'd call it a fail. (was a big selling point to me compared to others I was considering). Might be better if you could choose to leave the lines static, but maybe not, since they are the guidelines to heaven. Camera quality is okay.
Pros: Camera is fine. Not great, not bad... just fine.
Cons: Guidelines look like they are trying to guide you to heaven, and to get them to be active in a responsive manner, you have to back up at about at about 20 mph. ;)

Great Picture, Great Price
Rusty from Ellettsville, IN on 10/15/2018
first time installing a backup camera and it was fairly easy. The instructions were horrible, basically just a diagram in very small print but after watching a YouTube video everything was very simple. The only knock on the item is the connection from the camera unit to the cable running to the head unit is just a slide in plug with no locking tab. I taped it together when i installed it and it worked fantastic until i went for a drive and the next time i started the car it had NO Signal show up on screen. Pushed connector tighter and came right back on. Happened again on second trip. Redid the tape again and hoping it stays, if not i will be using some LocTite on the connection. Otherwise fantastic picture, washes out a little in direct sunlight but so does the factory one on my Jeep GC.
Pros: Easy Install Great picture
Cons: Poor connector with no locking tab Instructions could have been better

First camera I've used
Mike K. from Wilmington, DE on 10/8/2018
This is my first camera. The install was pretty easy, and thanks to Crutchfield's customersupporrt, I was able to install it with no problems. I hooked it up to a Pioneer mvh 200ex. It works pretty well with the stereo, but sometimes the screen gets a little messed up after shifting in reverse. There will be weird numbers or faded pictures from the camera on the radio and usb part of the stereo. One time I had to actually disconnect my battery due to the camera not turning on in reverse but when I was in drive. I'm not quite sure if that was a problem with the camera or the stereo though. Overall it does what is should and works just fine. I guess technically it's a type of computer and like all the other computers out there, its gonna have glitches.
Pros: Easy install Clear view
Cons: Has glitches with pioneer mvh 200ex

Nice camera with a very wide view. The backup lines can not be adjusted so if you want to have something that works get a head unit with them. Also, the camera does stick out a bit from the license plate. I have a large SUV with a step bumper. You have to be careful when standing on the bumper so that you do not step on the camera.

Decent camera
Bryan from Belews Creek , NC on 8/14/2018
I mounted the camera on the back of my enclosed landscaping trailer above the ramp door to act as an rear-view mirror when towing. The colors are not quite as accurate as I would have expected. Greens look reddish on a sunny day but under fluorescent lighting the colors seem more correct. Could be due to the angle of light hitting the lens but haven't looked much into it. That being said, it's fine for my needs. Even with the camera 8ft off the ground the IR LED's are bright enough to see clearly behind the trailer on the head unit. I'm not using the parking lines so can't comment on them. One thing I didn't like is that the camera has about 4-5ft. of cable coming out of it to a seemingly proprietary 4-pin connector (containing both power and video leads). The mating portion of the connector splits the power and video which is fine, but no matter what your video will always pass through all 18ft or so of the composite cable as there is no way to shorten this. The Jensen, on the other hand, has about 3-4ft of video cable from the camera to a female RCA connector so you could use any length extension cable after it. My total video run is about 50ft and I am getting noticeable video noise from the brake/turn signals (but have not played with using a different ground or supply tie-in point yet). The package came with an RCA male to male adapter but that seems pointless...it really needs a female to female adapter to add an extension cable for the video.
Pros: IR LED's do a good job at night
Cons: No way to add RCA extension cable without buying an additional adapter Colors are shifted under some lighting conditions

It's okay.
Crutchfield customer from Minneapolis, MN on 7/23/2018
It's okay... but for the price, I expected better than "okay." Things I like: long cable, easy mounting and installation. Things I don't like: the backup lines. I'd prefer static ones, the constant "snaking" according to steering wheel movement is distracting and unhelpful. It's especially bad if you're checking the camera for safety reasons via an override while driving on the highway, for instance to monitor your hitch or if you're driving a cargo vehicle with no rear windows and you need to check for vehicles behind you. Every movement of the steering wheel makes the lines move on the screen which is very distracting and not what you want when you're doing a quick proximity check.
Pros: long cable easy mounting easy installation
Cons: overpriced backup lines are not static and distracting

Good Cam, No Install Instructions
John T. from St Paul, MN on 7/23/2018
Overall, good picture quality and has the ability to adjust picture settings when paired w/Pioneer AVH1440. Installation instructions are absolutely terrible/non-existent. To add insult to injury, improper installation can (and did, in my case) fry out the electronics ahead of it. Once installed properly, you realize it is so easy to install, that you have to wonder why there are no install instructions included (either from Boyo or Crutchfield). I understand that there are a variety of ways to install depending on a person's requirements, but a simple instruction sheet that briefly describes the various methods would have saved me 2 days of labor replacing damaged equipment. I did call Crutchfield's tech line prior to installing and was given bad information, and to their credit, they replaced my entire order, which is exactly why I buy from them. All things considered, cam is very easy to install once you understand which wires to connect and which ones not to connect. That is why I was so frustrated with the whole deal, it's so simple that there should be absolutely no reason why a 3-4 sentence w/diagram install sheet couldn't be included with Crutchfield's otherwise great install information. I have to believe that virtually every camera, regardless of who makes it, installs almost the same way, so there wouldn't be a great deal of work involved in creating one.
Pros: - Good cam picture.
Cons: - No instructions from Boyo or Crutchfield on install. - Back up lines are not as accurate as OEM lines.

John from Cocoa Beach, FL on 7/3/2018
It works OK, but I have it on a super duty truck and the view is not quite wide enough for where the camera mounts on the license plate. I think it would be better on a mid size car. The parking lines are shaky and weird. Easy install and extra long wire are nice. Good camera overall. Great for hitching to trailers. Not great for backing into narrow space.
Pros: Easy install. Long cable included.
Cons: Narrow view for my big truck.

This camera is really nice, day or night especially after you adjust the light settings. I installed it forward high facing downward on the front grill guard of my Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 CTD. I installed a toggle switch on the red positive battery wire normally getting its signal from the reverse light and the black wire to ground. On the other end the one wire goes to a signal from the radio and the other goes to video in. Now when I flip the toggle switch, I go from camera one to camera two on the pioneer double din stereo . When I'm done viewing the camera I flip the toggle switch off and the camera doesn't have power running to it. I also cut the mirror wire and the on/off wire for the Gide lines that are located close to the camera end ,this way I don't see the lines and the image is correct on my stereo screen.
Pros: Great camera

Works good. Looks good. Like that I can turn the lines off if I want. Conceals the bracket nicely behind the license plate. My only issue is that the installation instructions stink. It has red wires at both ends. The instructions don't explain it. Had to resort to YouTube and buying another fuse as I blew it for my back up lights. FYI - it. You connect the red at the radio so it comes on with the radio (switched) do not connect the red at the rear to anything. Tape it off.
Pros: Looks nice and the bracket is not visible. Nice way to add on and not have to drill holes!
Cons: Poor instructions.

Bret from Tucson, AZ on 3/18/2018
I used the preinstalled license plate mount. Also comes with another option for mounting elsewhere. The picture is very clear in both day and night lighting. Significantly better than a separate, more expensive camera. It has animated guiding lines that move when you turn. It would be nice if the left/right movements were graduated based on more sensitive steering input detection like some of the nicer cameras I've seen, but that's understandable given the price. This camera only has three guide line indications: full left, full right, and straight back. Nothing in-between. Three electricity wires on the camera: two at the rear (one hot/one ground) and one that comes off the yellow RCA video cable terminal at the front, designed to trigger your screen's reverse sensor. I had already run a separately purchased wire to the front based on a previous experience with a different camera, so I didn't need this little trigger wire and taped it off. Save yourself the time and look for this feature before you run extra wires. Only complaint is that the manufacturer's instructions are HORRIBLY inadequate. But that's an industry standard, not particular to this model. Crutchfield's tech support was very helpful as usual, so this wasn't a problem. Overall satisfied. Would recommend to friends.
Pros: Excellent picture Low Price Wiring design saves you the trouble of buying a separate wire for the reverse trigger Good mounting options included
Cons: Manufacturer instructions are terrible, no help at all (mitigated by Crutchfield tech support)

Good camera for the money. I bought this camera after consulting with Crutchfiekd. I am not disappointed. It fits neatly on my car, and was reasonably easy to install. My only gripe is that the instructions are lacking. The supplied cable has a black and red lead on the camera end, and a red wire and RCA cable on the head unit end. Splice the red and black wires on the camera end to a reverse light. The red wire on the RCA end I had to splice to the purple and white (reverse) line coming from the radio. As some have noted you won't be framing any prints from this camera. It is a low-res composite signal so I am not surprised.
Pros: Easy to install License plate bracket and screw on mount included Great support from Crutchfield
Cons: Poor instruction manual

Good value, IR works well, Active parking lines: not so much.
Mike from Jamestown, ND on 12/13/2017
This is a good camera for the money. Mounting with the license plate is handy for some applications. The IR function works pretty well at night. The active parking lines have a mind of their own and are kind of distracting. They only mildly track the direction of the vehicle, for this reason I will probably disable them and us the head unit fixed lines. Allow your self a lot of time for fishing wires during the install.

Cons: The active parking lines have a mind of their own.

Nice backup camera
Sailor from Bothell, WA on 11/29/2017
Nice, simple, inexpensive back up camera that works well in the rain and dark. (Also, please remember the vertical adjustment for this camera is done by moving the camera up and down, the horizontal adjustments made inside your stereo system.) A good compatible stereo system is key. Mine sets up the movement lines, parking lines etc and allows easy horizontal adjustment. Be prepared to run the video and 12V power cable all the way up forward to the stereo from the license plate region and the also to the backup light and ground. I have a 2005 Honda CRV and had to pop off all the panels on the right side to do this properly and also the multi-light lens for the back up light access. Also removed the head unit with the stereo. I was replacing the stereo with a touch screen hands free stereo anyways, so it went well. Luckily I bought the inexpensive tool set Crutchfield offers and, although time consuming, all went really well, best of all everything went back together and worked the first time! It primarily helped me call the Crutchfield techs. Chris chatted with me for an hour and used my cellphone cam to point out key potential problem items and really saved me a lot of time. It also helped to see a Youtube video showing how to do the rear door panel removal and access/install of a camera in a CRV.
Pros: Well made camera. Installation is straightforward with panel removal tools. Simple to adjust. Good vision in low light and rain.
Cons: Takes time to do correctly.
