Features

Overview: The Boyo VTL402TJS short bar-type license plate mounted camera can provide a wide 170˚ diagonal view from the rear of your vehicle. The camera includes built-in selectable LEDs for nighttime illumination while backing up, as well as selectable trajectory parking lines. The VTL402TJS provides a composite video output, allowing it to be used with most aftermarket screens and mobile video monitors (sold separately).

Zinc Alloy Housing: The VTL402TJS's short bar-type bracket is made from zinc alloy metal and covered in a chrome finish with a scratch-resistant coating. The camera's waterproof (IP68) housing is made from the same long-lasting, durable material.

Rear View Camera: The VTL402TJS rear view camera features a highly sensitive 1/4" color CMOS image sensor with 600 TV lines (640 horizontal x 480 vertical) for true color reproduction and clear picture quality. The camera features a wide-angle lens with a 170° diagonal viewing angle providing an excellent field of vision behind your vehicle. The rear view camera can be angled up and down within the bar-type bracket for optimal camera aiming. A 1.5mm Allen key is provided for adjusting the camera angle.

LEDs: The Boyo short bar-type license plate camera includes two built-in 3W LEDs for added visibility at night and in low-light conditions. A Green wire on the camera cable can be connected to the vehicle reverse light wire for powering the LEDs while backing up. When off, the VTL402TJS has a LUX of 0.5.

Switchable Features: The VTL402TJS includes two loop-wires attached to the camera cable that can be left intact or cut to activate or deactivate camera features.

  • White Loop: While intact, this loop provides a mirror camera image while reversing. Cutting the loop displays a normal (non-reverse) camera image.
  • Blue Loop: By default, the camera will display parking guidelines. Cutting the Blue Loop will disable the parking guidelines while reversing.

Installation: The VTL402TJS attaches to your vehicle's existing license plate frame with the supplied hardware. The integrated rear view camera features an attached 20" video/power/ground cable which connects to the 24' video extension cable. The extension cable is then routed from outside of the vehicle through your vehicle's interior to your vehicle's display monitor or optional stand-alone monitor (not included). The provided 39" power and ground wires for the camera get connected to the vehicle's reverse wire and ground location in the rear of the vehicle.

Note: The camera's power wire should be connected to the vehicle's reverse wire to prevent the LEDs from inadvertently being activated while driving.

Q
I installed on the front of my vehicle. How do I flip the reverse setting?
patrick  Sep 07, 2023
1 answer
A
In order to flip the image, you'll need to cut the white wire loop present on the camera cable.

Q
What does the LED on/off green wire hook to?
larissa  Jun 02, 2023
1 answer
A
The green wire connects to your vehicle's backup light.

Q
Can this camera (VRL402TJS) be mounted vertical, instead of horizontal? Thinking about using it as a side-view camera for my RV. Thank you
david  Jan 14, 2023
1 answer
A
This Boyo VTL402TJS would not be a great choice, David. This camera can really be oriented in any mounting position, but you would not be able to adjust the picture image. A turn signal triggered side camera won't do you any good if you have the picture sideways! Even though it is not chrome (a bummer) I would consider using the Boyo VTK691HD in the below link. This comes with various mounting provisions, but also if you notice the camera CAN be adjusted into your choice of mount to make sure the picture is the right side up! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_707VT601HD/Boyo-VTK601HD.html

Q
I have a manual transmission. If I use the wire to power the camera from the reverse lights, do I still need to hook up the reverse wire from the aftermarket radio wiring harness?
jonathan  Jun 30, 2025
1 answer
A
Yes because the radio still needs to know when you are in reverse so it can automatically display the video coming from the backup camera when you shift into reverse.

Q
Could I get a longer extension cord for my camera?
larwin  Jun 12, 2025
1 answer
A
Greetings Larwin. Thank you for your question. You can use a common composite (RCA) video cable and an RCA barrel connector to extend the cameras video cable. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120RCABFN/T-Spec-RCA-Barrel-Connectors.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120V10R9V/T-Spec-v10-Series-Video-Cable-9-foot.html

Q
Is this camera compatible with Pioneer A/V car audio?
kent  Mar 31, 2023
1 answer
A
This camera will work with any aftermarket car stereo with a composite video input (yellow RCA) for a rear camera. That should include any Pioneer radio with that connection.

Q
Camera was working good with my new Kenwood at install, I checked with camera unmounted and mounted. Then this morning I backed up and the camera came on upside down and then quit. After that I have not been able to get the camera to work at all? Do you have troubleshooting information?

Hi , yes I'm also experiencing some problems with my back up camera, just a few weeks ago the back up lights on the camera started flickering.
oscar  Feb 10, 2022
A
Sorry. No I don't. Mine is still fine. You might check for a loose connection or for damage to the camera.
james  Feb 10, 2022
A
Hey, The one I bought is been working fine. Check the power line to it. Is it from the reverse light? Try disconnecting the camera and connecting it again to the radio. Hope it helps.

Am I able to use this as a front camera? I recently bought a larger vehicle and was looking to do front and back cameras.

I haven't had a chance to install it but I guess you could put it on the front of the vehicle
dalar  Aug 16, 2021
A
I don't know any reason you couldn't.

Q
Is the camera mounted at the top or bottom of the license plate? Or is it interchangeable? I paid $100 for m new MBZ license plate frame.
bajabltz  Jun 25, 2021

A
I mounted mine at the top. You need to somehow route the wires into the trunk. I went in right above the plate for a nicely finished job. This is the 2nd backup camera I've installed. The first one was junk. This one is decent and easy to install.

Q
I am wanting to use this camera to line up my trailer with my hitch, but am concerned my ball hitch might not be visible. Can the camera's field of vision be adjusted to include the ball hitch? I will be putting this on a pickup.
paul r  Jan 13, 2021

A
My camera is mounted on a Chev 2500 HD. The camera is in perfect position for viewing attachment of ball to hitch.
billy r  Jan 14, 2021
A
The camera does pivot! As you can see in the pictures, there are two allen screws to tighten when you find the camera position that works for you (the proper sized allen wrench comes with the unit). I have not attempted to adjust the camera down far enough to see the trailer hitch, but I would be very surprised if the camera does not pivot that far. I think it's a pretty safe bet that it will adjust to where you need it. I would try it for you, but I installed the unit on my step-mom's jeep, so I don't have the vehicle at hand.
gabriel  Jan 13, 2021

I have the same camera on my truck and can see the ball hitch just fine.
donald lee  Jan 13, 2021
A
The camera position is fixed. If it doesn't catch the hitch in its default position, you won't be able to see it. (short of re-mounting it so ti can see the hitch). Other models have a pivot design. Good is that it can be adjusted when you want to. Bad is that sometimes you get in the car and someone/something adjusted it where you don't want it...
