Product Research

Features

1" Horn-Loaded Tweeter: The R-51M bookshelf loudspeaker features Klipsch's proprietary Tractrix Horn technology mated with a 1" aluminum LTS tweeter, for impressive high-end response and greater extension, enhanced imaging and powerful dynamics.

  • 90°x90° Tractrix Horn: The square Tractrix Horn delivers a 90° (w) x 90° (h) dispersion pattern for a broader sound-stage. Klipsch exclusive Tractrix horn technology ensures that the speaker's high frequency energy is aimed at the listener and reduces artificial reverb or filtering caused by indirect sound bouncing off of walls. Using this proprietary focused technology provides clarity, dynamics, and detail for your movies and music
  • LTS (Linear Travel Suspension): Behind each horn lies a 1.0" tweeter with a linear travel suspension. Klipsch exclusive Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) minimizes distortion for enhanced, detailed performances. In addition, Using Kapton (an extremely light and rigid material) in the tweeter suspension provides high efficiency and improve resolution and detail.

5.25" Copper-Spun IMG Woofer: The Klipsch R-51M bookshelf speaker houses a single 5.25" Copper-Spun IMG woofer. The Copper-Spun IMG (Injection Molded Graphite) woofer is exceptionally light while being extremely rigid - providing remarkable low frequency response, with minimal cone breakup and distortion.

Flared Port: The Klipsch Reference series bookshelf speaker features a rear-firing port that is perfectly matched to the cabinet and drivers. The port is precisely flared to minimize turbulence even at the lowest frequencies.

MDF Cabinet: The Klipsch R-51M bookshelf speaker features a MDF cabinet with a scratch-resistant, textured wood grain vinyl that seamlessly integrates into almost any room or decor. The enclosure's reinforced MDF construction reduces cabinet vibration for less audible coloration and improved sonic accuracy.

Acoustically Transparent Grille: The Klipsch R-51M bookshelf speaker comes with a removable, black cloth grille that is magnetic and acoustically transparent.

5-Way Binding Posts: The Klipsch Reference series bookshelf speaker is fitted with sturdy 5-way binding posts to ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors. The 5-way binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single or dual), pin-connectors, spade-lugs and bare wire (up to 10AWG). Two plastic caps will need to be removed to use banana plugs.

Mounting Options: The Klipsch R-51M can be placed on a speaker stand, bookshelf, table, or other flat surface. The bookshelf loudspeaker comes with self-adhesive rubber feet to secure the speaker in place and prevent any damage to your stand's or shelf's surface. The rubber feet add approximately 0.3125" to the overall height of the speaker.

Note: There is no included bracket, keyhole slot, or threaded insert to wall-mount the speaker.

Application & Placement: The Klipsch R-51M bookshelf loudspeaker can be used in a dedicated stereo application or in a home theater application as front and/or rear speakers.

  • Front Placement: For optimum performance in a stereo application or as front speakers in a home theater application, Klipsch suggests placing the loudspeakers 6' to 15' apart. They may also be toed-in slightly for better stereo imaging. The listening position should be about 1 to 1.5x the distance separating the speakers.
  • Rear Placement: When used as surround speakers in a home theater setup, the loudspeakers should be placed approximately 2' above the listening position. Typically this will be approximately 5' to 7' above the floor. The surrounds should be placed on the walls directly adjacent to the listening position. Another option would be on the wall behind the listening position.

Reference Series: The Klipsch Reference series consists of four floorstanding speakers (R-610F/R-620F/R-820F/R-625FA), two bookshelf speakers (R-41/R-51M), two center channel speakers (R-34C/R-52C), and one Dolby Atmos speaker (R-41SA) - all sold separately. The Klipsch Reference series line-up of loudspeakers sound great in stereo and home theater applications.

Optional Powered Sub: For bigger & deeper bass response, pair the Klipsch Reference series loudspeaker with one of Klipsch's powered subwoofers (sold separately).

Q
I bought an Audio-Technica LP-120XUSB turntable. Are these speakers compatible?
charlie  Feb 28, 2023
1 answer
A
These Klipsch Reference R-51M bookshelves are a great choice for LP listening Carlos, but you will need a receiver connected between your sweet Audio-Technica LP-120XUSB deck and the speakers. IF you do not want another piece of gear, consider using the Klipsch R-15PM's in the link below. These speakers have an amplifier built-in, so you can directly connect your new turntable to these and enjoy! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_714R15PM/Klipsch-Reference-R-15PM.html

Q
Where are Klipsch speakers made?
steve  Feb 25, 2023
1 answer
A
These Klipsch R-51M Bookshelf speakers are manufactured in China, Steve. Speakers from the Klipsch Heritage line like the Heresy IV's in the link below are handmade stateside in Hope, AR. Klipsch continues the longstanding tradition of fine hand-built speakers, and that quality is apparent even in models made overseas! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_700HRSY4CH/Klipsch-Heritage-Heresy-IV-Natural-Cherry.html

Q
Can Klipsch bookshelf speakers be set up on their sides, without effecting sound quality? I have height limitations in my record room.
benjamin  Dec 31, 2022
1 answer
A
These speakers dispersion, optimized for when the speaker is upright, would be impacted when rotated 90 degrees and may not sound as room filling. We do not recommend installing these on their side. Instead, we suggest contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation

Q
are these speakers blue tooth compatible?
walter  Oct 10, 2022
1 answer
A
These are not powered speakers and do not have Bluetooth functionality. These speakers would require an amplifier or receiver. For a similar set of powered speakers with Bluetooth, we may consider the R-15PM, which is linked here: www.crutchfield.com/p_714R15PM/item.html

Are there limits I need to know before buying a receiver with correct watts-ohm's for these?

A
Excellent bookshelf cant go wrong with these sound great with a sub If you getting a amp with more power go with the rp-600 or rp 400 enjoy whatever you decide...
david  Mar 04, 2022
A
Klipsch speakers are very good with low power amps. Having said that, I would recommend a high quality amp with the most power you can, or want, to afford without greatly exceeding the max advertised power of the speaker(s). The R-51M is 8 ohm compatible with a published power handling capacity up to 85 watts RMS or 340 watts peak power. Power these with a 50-75 watt high quality amp and I think you will be pleased.

Q
What should I set the crossover frequency for these?
geraldo g.  Jun 30, 2021
3 answers
A
Set the low-pass filter to 80 to 100 Hz. Set the high-pass filter to 60 to 80 Hz. To make it easy on yourself, set both filters to 80 Hz and adjust to taste.
ronald  Jul 15, 2021
A
I couldn't tell you that specifically. They are hooked to a kenwood receiver from the seventies at my moms. I did adjust the bass and treble knobs a little bit.
jordan d  Jul 01, 2021
A
Not sure if this answer will be of any assistance or not; the pair I have is in another location and, if I remember correctly, there is no crossover adjustment on the speakers. If you're wondering about a sub's crossover frequency, paired with these speakers, I've always thought that to be a subjective choice, and/or a matter of personal preference, i.e. does one set the crossover above the lowest freq response rating, in the mix with the lowest freq response rating, or below. But, as I said earlier, I'm afraid this response may not be of much help. Best wishes.

Q
How would I wire these 2 speakers up with an amp that makes 50 watts per channel at 4 ohms to make it the 8 ohms it needs? And there is 2 channels.
niko  Jun 15, 2021
1 answer
A
It is not possible to make each of these speakers present a 4 ohm load to an amp. The good news is that an amp which can handle 4 ohm loads will also handle 8 ohm loads. It should work with the chance that the amp will output less than 50 watts. If the specifications do not state how much less and you want to give the speakers the 50 watts RMS they can handle, I recommend contacting an advisor by calling 1-800-324-9695 to discuss the setup and any other goals you have to get a personal recommendation on an amp that will work.

Q
What kind of kkipsch speakers can i use for the Yamaha amplifier?
donna  May 29, 2021
2 answers
A
Klipsch R51 or R41 with a subwoofer work great with Yamaha receivers. I have a Yamaha TSR 7850. They both have very high efficiency and get loud with less power.
richard  Jul 25, 2021
A
As long as your amplifier has speaker output any bookshelf, floorstanding or satellite klipsch speakers will work.
benjamin  Jul 24, 2021
Q
Can these speakers be used for rear surround speakers?
richard  Jan 30, 2021
4 answers
A
Absolutely! I use them as my fronts in my set up and I use the R-41M for the rears. They sound amazing together!
jason  Jan 31, 2021
A
Yes I am using them for my rear & they work great
terry  Jan 31, 2021
A
Yes they can, and many other speakers as well. Do keep in mind these are passive speakers and hence need to be connected from an amplifier output. Active speakers, which these are not, have their own amplifier and need a preamp connection. So assuming you already have a HT receiver, or a HT preamp/amp you can use these as surround speakers. And they will do an outstanding job at it. These are really great speakers. Klipsch designed a winner here. I have used them as main L/R speakers with a subwoofer with really satisfying results.
derwin  Jan 30, 2021
A
I don't know. I haven't tried to use them as surround speakers.

Q
WILL AN INTEGRATED AMP WITH 40 WATT RMS 4CHANNEL WORK WITH THESE SPEAKERS?
nancy  Sep 16, 2020
2 answers
A
These speakers sensitivity rating is 93db. So they are more efficient than the great majority of speakers out there. Hence, they will require less power to reach similar volumes than other less efficient speaker. As a rule of thumb, sound from these will be perceived twice as loud as a 90db efficient speaker. I have used these with a 50watts per channel class D tube amplifier with satisfying results in a 15'x 25' room.
derwin  Jan 30, 2021
A
Probably. But you might have to push the volume a little higher since the wattage is pretty low. What is the amp integrated with?
taylor  Sep 16, 2020
Q
Will these work with a Mac1900?
greg  Aug 04, 2020
3 answers
A
i run my r-51's through an old analog nad 7045! they crank with very little volume! they're clear with no detectable distortion! the classic 1900 should be a perfect match!!!
brian  Aug 05, 2020
A
Why....yes they will, if you have banana plug connections. If not you'll need adapter with left and right connection or you can just strip the wires, observing polarity......of course. Enjoy!!!!!!!!
luis a  Aug 05, 2020
A
If it's the old school receiver, then yes, it should work.
taylor  Aug 04, 2020
Q
can you pair these with klipsch promedia 2.1 computer speakers / sub? will i need a splitter of some sort?
gmuhagcsaka  Jun 20, 2020
3 answers
A
I'm not sure. I used them for my 7.2 surround system. I wish I could be of any help. But I'm really not sure. I would contact Klipsch directly.
jorge  Jun 20, 2020
A
This depends entirely on the subwoofer. If the sub has normal (+ -) connections for the speakers, then yes. If it has RCA you'll need RCA to speaker wires, and if it has something else, probably not. Or not easily.
taylor  Jun 20, 2020
A
i am using mine with a 10inch klipsch powered sub. im sure it would work as long as the amp you are using has a sub line out. these are not powered speakers like the ones that come with the pro media. an amp or receiver is needed.

Q
How do these compare to the R-15M? Is it worth upgrading to these?
jay  Nov 25, 2018
10 answers
A
i bought a pair to upgrade from a pair of Sony SS CS5s. I would suggest upgrading to the Premier Reference series, these don't have the base response or high end I expected with Klipsch. The tweeter in this budget model is aluminum not titanium. The cases are very thin. These might be ok for a theatre system but in a 2.1 audio system you will be disappointed. Soundstage is nonexistent both high and low end response is subpar. I've always been a klipsch fan but this speaker is obviously designed for the mass market. Upgrade to the Premier Reference series it's worth the $.
brett  Dec 05, 2020
A
The 15s and 51s are basically the same thing. It would be a better investment to upgrade to RP bookshelf speakers than to the 51s.
taylor  Jun 20, 2020
A
it depends more on price. at the price i paid for the R-51's (124.99), it's worth picking them up on their own! the sound is terrific!
brian  Dec 03, 2018
A
Not familiar with the R-15M, but I'm very pleased with the R-51M speakers. My only suggestion would be if you are going to get the R-51Ms, make sure you have a decent subwoofer or pair them with another set of speakers with a substantial low end. I have my R-51Ms paired with a set of Elac B6s "and" an old Infinity sub. My goal with buying the R-51Ms was to raise the ceiling of the highs and enrich the mids that my Elacs were lacking. Adding the sub just rounded out the bottom end and really added some extra bass punch. I read somewhere that a great way to get better performance from your speakers without spending a fortune was to pair two sets of speakers that have different strengths. I can verify that my "Budget Wall-0-Sound" kicks ass and it didn't have to sell any of the kids to do it. (Though I've been tempted) If the half price sale is still going on, take advantage and pick up a pair of these. Hell, you can always send them back if you don't like them. But I think you will want to keep them. Cheers!
michael  Dec 03, 2018
A
I Think the 51 IS JUST A NEWER MODEL THE 15 THE LOOK ALMOST THE SAME WITH SOME MINOR DIFFERENCES THE SOUND ON THE 51 SEEMS A LITTLE BETTER BUT OVER ALL IF YOU HAVE THE 15'S SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR NOW.
lathrop  Dec 03, 2018
A
Well if your referring to the R-15pm. I'm not sure the R-15pm are powered speakers. The R51m are not. I haven't heard the 15pm's so I can't give you an honest answer. But I'm using four 51m's as my surround and surround backs, and I'm using an Emotiva power amplifier with a Marantz pre amp and they sound amazing. For both movies and music. You won't be disappointed.

Q
Can these be mounted on the wall?
mike  Nov 21, 2018
2 answers
A
They can be wall mounted with the appropriate mount. There are several options to consider through the internet. However, any speaker mount will require drilling holes on the speaker. Make sure you are ok with that before proceeding. Another option is to use a shelf design. There are many options on shelves for speakers. Just make sure they are of the appropriate size to reduce risk of falling of the shelves.
derwin  Jan 30, 2021
A
I don't have an answer for that. Sorry. I plan to have them eventually on pedestals for better sound production.
