A classic amplifier for the digital age

NAD C 399 Integrated Amp with MDC2 BluOS Module

NAD's C 399 integrated amplifier gives you pristine power and forward-thinking flexibility.

The C 399, NAD's flagship integrated amplifier in its Classic line, will give you the fantastic sound we've come to expect from NAD. It gets the basics right, including a precise volume control with accurate channel balance and low-noise circuits. And it also features a high-performance DAC and future-ready expansion slots.

Masterful power

This amp will render your digital and analog sources in sparkling, authoritative detail. Previously featured only in NAD's Masters Series, the C 399's HybridDigital nCore amplifier is super-efficient and effortlessly powerful. It can deliver 180 watts per channel continuous power, and 250 watts per channel instantaneous power. That means it can handle crazy dynamic peaks, from hard-hitting electronic dance tracks to explosive Marvel movies. And it'll drive demanding low-impedance speakers with cool-running, high-current power and vanishingly low noise and distortion levels — even when cranked.

High-end digital decoding

The high-performance built-in ESS Sabre ES9028 DAC previously only came in NAD's Master Series components. It's capable of decoding high-res music files at up to 32-bit/384kHz, and it's known for its wide dynamic range, ultra-low noise and distortion, and near-zero levels of jitter (timing errors that can smear musical detail).

Flexible connections

The C 399 has two optical and two coaxial digital inputs for taking advantage of its great internal DAC. You also get an HDMI eARC port for playing TV sound and controlling the amplifier volume with the TV's remote control. Analog connections include two pairs of RCA line-level inputs, plus a moving magnet phono stage that gives you precise, natural sound with extremely low noise. The phono preamp's circuit design cuts down on frequencies below the threshold of human hearing — that inherent turntable rumble — without conceding fantastic bass response.

In addition to two sets of speaker outputs, the C 399 has preamp output jacks and dual subwoofer outputs. Two-way Bluetooth with aptX® HD allows 24-bit streaming from mobile devices, and high-quality output to compatible Bluetooth headphones. A front-panel 1/4" jack connects you to a built-in headphone amplifier that can drive even demanding high-impedance cans.

Future-ready expansion slots

The C 399 is the first component to feature NAD's next-generation MDC2 architecture. MDC (Modular Design Construction) is a concept NAD introduced in 2006 to "make obsolescence obsolete," and this new version allows two-way communication between the module and the amp.

The optional MDC2 BluOS-D module gives you 24-bit high-res music playback from sources on your local network or from the web. Stream music from personal drives or from internet streaming services. The selection of supported services — including TIDAL, Spotify®, Qobuz, and Amazon Music, among others — is one of the most impressive we've seen. Apple users can easily stream from their devices using AirPlay® 2.

New two-way communication also lets this module stream music from your connected sources — even a turntable — to BluOS components in other rooms. And its built-in Dirac Live function lets you compensate for your room's acoustics to get clear and accurate bass and a balanced soundstage across the listening frequencies.

HybridDigital nCore Amplifier: Trickled down from NAD's Masters Series, the C 399's HybridDigital nCore amplifier is highly efficient and remarkably powerful. It can deliver 180 Watts per channel continuous power, and 250 Watts per channel instantaneous power, allowing the C 399 to produce musical transients effortlessly. The HybridDigital nCore design is renowned for its wide bandwidth, flat frequency response, clean clipping behavior with instant recovery, high current capability, and stability into demanding low-impedance speaker loads. With an extremely low level of harmonic distortion, noise and distortion are incredibly low under all operating conditions. As a result, the C 399 is able to produce neutral, distortion-free sound even at very high listening levels, with thrilling dynamics, exquisite detail, and superb portrayal of space.

32-Bit/384kHz ESS Sabre DAC (ES9028): Also trickled down from the Masters Series is the 32-bit/384kHz ESS Sabre high-resolution DAC (ES9028); a design noted for its wide dynamic range, ultra-low noise and distortion, and near-zero levels of clock jitter. This premium DAC (digital-to-analog converter) enables the C 399 to reproduce all of its digital sources with amazing musicality, a precise soundstage, and stunning clarity.

Tone Control: The NAD C 399 integrated amplifier is equipped with tone controls for Bass, Treble, and Balance.

A/B Binding Post Speaker Outputs: The amplifier features A & B speaker terminals to power two pair of loudspeakers at once. The speaker terminals consist of eight binding posts that will accept banana plugs (single or dual), pin connectors, spade lugs, and bare wire (up to 10AWG). The amplifier supports 4-ohm speakers when only one pair is connected, however, when two pair of speakers are connected a minimum impedance of 8-ohm is recommended.

    • You can output sound from both sets of speaker outputs simultaneously or mute both at the same time.
    • You cannot play one set of speakers and mute the other set (they will both play and mute at the same time.
    • The Speaker A & B buttons on the remote play or mute both sets of speakers simultaneously and do not operate them individually.

Stereo RCA Pre-Outs: The stereo RCA pre-outs lets you use the C 399 as a high-performance pre-amplifier with a more powerful external amplifier (sold separately).

Dual Sub Outputs: The NAD C 399 is equipped with two discrete mono-RCA sub outputs to connect up to two powered subwoofers. The subwoofer outputs have a built-in low pass crossover that can be adjusted in the BluOS app from 40-200Hz (80Hz default).

Discrete Headphone Amplifier: The NAD C 399 incorporates a discrete headphone amplifier with low output impedance and very high output voltage capability, enough to drive even high impedance studio monitor headphones. Connecting a set of headphone to unit's front-panel 1/4" jack will mute the speaker outputs. Volume, tone, and balance controls are all operable during headphone listening.

MDC2 Architecture: The C 399 features NAD's new MDC2 architecture. The all new MDC2 architecture allows signals to be passed back and forth between the module and compatible NAD component, opening up a far wider range of upgrade options and future expansion. There are two empty MDC2 slots on the rear-panel of the C 399.

    • Currently there is a MDC2 BluOS-D module available (sold separately) that adds Dirac Live Room Correction, BluOS high-resolution multiroom audio, and USB audio to the C 399.
    • You can only use NAD's new MDC2 modules with this unit. Previous MDC modules are not supported.
    Variety Of Sources

HDMI eARC: The NAD C 399 features an HDMI eARC jack to connect the integrated amplifier to your TV's HDMI eARC or ARC input. The integrated amplifier's eARC jack only supports 2ch PCM (up to 24-bit/192kHz). Audio from the HDMI eARC jack can be played back at the C 399 and wirelessly distributed to other Bluesound and BluOS components in your home for multiroom playback.

    • The HDMI eARC jack does not support Dolby Digital, DTS or other multichannel audio formats.
    • The HDMI eARC jack only supports audio transmission; video is not supported.

Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The NAD C Series C 399 is equipped with two optical (toslink) digital inputs and two coaxial (RCA) digital input. These digital inputs will support 2ch PCM audio up to 24-bit/192kHz (not compatible with Dolby Digital or DTS).

Analog Line-Level & Phono Inputs: The NAD C 399 offers two analog line-level inputs and one MM Phono input, all consisting of stereo RCA jacks. There is an Analog bypass function for the line-level and phono inputs, allowing the analog signals to remain in the analog domain without analog-to-digital conversion. You can also adjust the gain of each analog input.

    • Line-Level: The two analog stereo RCA inputs can accommodate all kinds of analog line-level source components by offering ideal input impedance characteristics with linear ultra-low-noise buffer amplifiers to prevent any sonic degradation caused by inappropriate loading of the source device.
    • MM Phono: The NAD C 399 integrated amplifier includes an MM Phono stage with precisely accurate RIAA equalization, high overload margins, extremely low noise, and an innovative circuit to suppress infrasonic noise that is present on all LPs - all without affecting bass response.

Bluetooth aptX HD: The NAD C 399 features two-way wireless Bluetooth capability that is powered by aptX HD for the highest possible sound quality available. aptX HD supports 48kHz/24-bit LPCM audio over a Bluetooth wireless connection for a "better-than-CD" listening experience. The C 399 can act as a Bluetooth Receiver or Bluetooth Transmitter (but not both at the same time). The C 399 supports SSP (Secure Simple Pairing) for wireless Bluetooth connectivity of compatible devices. You can pair multiple devices with the C 399, but only one device can be connected and used at a time (the BluOS Controller app must be used for pairing). The NAD C 399 has a Bluetooth wireless range of approximately 33'.

    • Receiver Mode: In Receiver mode, you can wirelessly stream stored music and music apps from your smartphones, tablets and laptops to the NAD C 399. You can control basic playback functions (Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track) from the remote, but your Bluetooth source device will have to be used for more advanced music navigation. The C 399 does not display song/artist/album information. However, you can view song/artist information and album art from the BluOS app on your Apple iOS or Android device.
    • Transmitter Mode: In Transmitter mode, you can wirelessly stream analog & digital inputs of the C 399 and BluOS network content to a set of Bluetooth enabled headphones (only one set of headphones can be connected at a time). Because the NAD C 399 does not support Receiver & Transmitter mode simultaneously, you cannot listen to a Bluetooth audio streaming source on a set of Bluetooth headphones through the C 399. There is no audio output from the C 399's speaker, preamp, or headphone outputs when the unit is wirelessly streaming to a set of Bluetooth headphones.

Note: To utilize the Receiver mode or Transmitter Mode for Bluetooth, make sure the included Bluetooth antennas are connected and installed on the back of the integrated amplifier.

    Simple Control

IR Remote: The included IR remote control handles the key functions of the C 399 integrated amplifier and playback controls for BluOS. The IR remote can also be used to directly command other NAD products that respond to applicable common remote control codes (this includes NAD stereo receiver, integrated amplifier, and preamplifier models. It has additional controls to remotely operate NAD CD players, AM/FM tuners, and dedicated AM/FM/DB Tuners. It will operate up to a distance of 23'. The remote requires two "AA" alkaline batteries (included).

Remote Connections: The NAD C 399 is fitted with a 12V trigger input/output, an IR input/output, and a RS-232 port for custom integration and advanced remote connectivity

    • 12V Trigger In/Out: The +12V trigger output (3.5mm) lets you turn on/off another device along with the C 399. The integrated amp can also be turned on/off by another device using the +12V trigger input (3.5mm).
    • IR In/Out: The IR input (3.5mm)is used to control this unit using an optional infrared repeater or the IR output of another component. The IR output (3.5mm) can be used for control of another NAD component.
    • RS-232 Port: The RS-232 port allows connection to a compatible PC or external whole-house control system. NAD is a certified partner of Control4, Crestron, RTI, URC, AMX, Savant, & Elan.

Source Naming & Delete: You can customize the name of any source input for easier identification. You can also disable a source input, so you won't have to scroll through unused sources to find the source you want.

Auto Sense/Standby: The C 399 can be setup to automatically go into standby mode if there is no user interface interaction and no active source input for 30 minutes. The Auto Sense feature enables the C 399 to wake up from standby mode when triggered by an active source input with an audio signal.

    Customer Q&A

    3 questions already asked

Will this unit be able to stream to Bluetooth headphones from analog sources or only from digital sources?
    mark  Jun 22, 2023
    1 answer
You can transmit both analog & digital inputs to a set of Bluetooth enabled headphones.
    zachary  Jun 23, 2023 (Staff)
I have a Marantz NR1200 Slimline stereo receiver. Is it possible for me to connect that receiver to this Integrated Amplifier via the Front PRE OUT on the Marantz, so I can use this amp to get more power to my Focal Speakers, which are desperate for more power?
    andrew  Apr 02, 2023
    1 answer
This would be possible. However, it is important to note that you'll have two volume controls to consider--the Marantz and the NAD. A more common solution would be to use a power amplifier or an integrated amplifier with a specific input for home theater passthrough. Please reach out to our advisors via online chat or phone for additional help with this project.
    zachary  Apr 02, 2023 (Staff)
So the amp remains at 180 Watt output on 4 Ohm speakers too?
    william  Feb 22, 2023
    1 answer
Exactly correct, Zach! This NAD C 399 has a regulated power output. It is 4-ohm stable for use with lower impedance speakers, but it does put out the same 180-watts per channel to a 4 or 8-ohm pair of speakers.
