The MDC HDM-2 is the latest MDC module from NAD and adds HDMI switching and audio capability to six of their most popular integrated amplifiers and preamplifiers. Based on the latest 6GHz HDMI chip, the MDC HDM-2 includes full support for UHD (4K) video pass through to a video monitor.

Compatibility: NAD's DD HDMI-1 module is compatible with select NAD Classic series digital integrated amplifiers and preamplifiers, as well as NAD's Masters series digital preamplifiers.

HDMI Module (HDM-2): The NAD HDM-2 is a HDMI upgrade module for select NAD digital integrated amplifiers, BluOS preamplifiers, and Masters series direct digital stereo preamplifiers. The HDM-2 offers three HDMI inputs and one output with video pass-through.

24-Bit/192kHz 2Ch PCM: The MDC HDM-2 uses the mandatory two-channel linear PCM soundtrack (up to 24-bit/192kHz) from Blu-ray or DVD to make a compelling two-channel high definition theatre presentation. There is no surround sound decoding.
UHD 4K/HDR Compatible: The NAD MDC HDM-2 supports up to HD 4K video resolution with 4:4:4@60 Hz. The MDC HDMI-2 also supports HDR10 for High Dynamic Range video. In addition, it is HDCP 2.2 compliant.
CEC & ARC Support: The NAD MDC HDM-2 supports Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) and Audio Return Channel (ARC) via HDMI connectivity.

I'm trying to enable HDMI ARC between my LQ OLED G3 and my HDM-2 MDC module in my C658, but haven't yet been successful. I'm connecting the output HDMI on the module to the ARC-compatible HDMI2 port on the TV. I've also ensured that I've selected HDMI ARC as my audio output option on the LG. I can't hear any audio via this configuration on my C658. What am I doing wrong? (If I use an optical cable instead, the audio works fine.)

When installing this module in a compatible NAD amp/receiver, there will be a firmware update for the amp/receiver required for the module to work. Does this HDMI add-on module work with the NAD 7225PE?

Unfortunately it is not compatible with the NAD 7225PE. It's compatible with NAD models C 390DD, C 368 , C 388, M12, M32, and C 658.

A review mentioned watching TV while listening to music. This is definitely something I would be interested in. Sometimes I may want to have a baseball game on while listening to music. How is that done with the MDC HDM-2?

Hi Steve -- it has been a bit since I've done this, but I believe I simply select my HDMI source (e.g., TiVO) first. I'll get the device on the channel I want to watch, and then I'll select a different source which isn't HDMI (e.g., optical). I'll double check later today or tomorrow, and will update my answer if I find my memory to be a bit rusty. ...but I'm recalling doing this for a football game last season.

I connected the HDMI Out from the module to the HDMI-ARC In on my Samsung TV. The TV is both a source for my C388 and a display on its own (TV speakers are turned off), so if I want to listen to music, I just select the source I want and the TV continues to display while the NAD plays sound from the new source. The TV sound is sent to the integrated amp, but the display is not turned off if I select another source on the NAD. I do this daily, streaming Amazon Music HD while something else displays. It's a satisfactory configuration for my needs.

If you switch to a video input, then back to an audio only input, the MDC will continue to pass the video to your TV while playing audio from the audio only input.

The NAD MDC HDM-2 uses a pass through design allowing video signals to pass through while you switch to different audio inputs. Works very well.

Will I get the benefits of SACD from my Sony Blu Ray player with this upgrade card? Or will I basically just be getting CD Quality out of the SACD output from the Blu Ray player

In my experience, my Yamaha Blu Ray SACD player does not pass the SACD audio via HDMI out. Therefore I get only CD (not SACD) audio through the NAD HDM-2. I would check the manual / specs of your Sony SACD player to see if it passes SACD audio through HDMI out. Even if it does, I'm not sure whether or not the NAD HDM-2 is converting the audio to PCM regardless.

It depends on the Sony Bluray player you are using. Some of the Sony Bluray players that support SACD will bitstream the Audio for SACD out through the HDMI. In this case, you would then get the SACD audio out and would be using the DAC in the NAD device. If you output via the analog outputs on the Bluray player you would be using the DAC in the bluray player.

Does HDMI sound better than optical output to the NAD amplifier?

HDMI cables can transmit more audio formats including the ones used on Blu-ray discs than optical cables. My reason for adding the HDMI module to the NAD amplifier was to add HDMI switching and control options for my system similar to those available with AV receivers. Whether HDMI cables are better than optical cables for those audio formats that both are capable of is a question for better ears than mine.

I'm trying to connect my Roku Ultra and Blu Ray player to the MDC HDM-2 and can't seem to get it to work. I have a Samsung TV with a one connect box and the only thing connected to it is the arc in to the hdmi of on the MDC HDM-2. What am I doing wrong? Obviously, I need help. Thank you for your time

Yes, the HDMI IN will support ARC, and CEC. Keep in mind that this device only supports Stereo decoding, and will not function with Surround encoding. This caused some frustration for me, as I was unable to force certain applications on my Android TV (such as Netflix) to output in Stereo mode. This resulted in *no* audio output at all from those applications.

This HDMI circuit board i for use with specific NAD stereo receivers. This allows you to have HDMI switching capabilities in the NAD receivers that did not have it to begin with. You can connect a disc player to these HDMI ports when used in a compatible NAD receiver to transmit audio and video signals.
