I used to be a big believer in NAD and have purchased over $20,000 in products from them and Crutchfield. Unfortunately, I was left out to dry on this unit. Crutchfield refused to help me when my unit died. NAD put me through a very long back and forth within my warranty. It fell out of warranty during the back and forth, then they sent me to two defunct repair shops. It started with a BlueOS related error, then the unit put out an explosive sound and shut off, needing a full firmware update to boot (repeats followed). I understand you are always rolling the dice with high-fi gear, but I was really let down on this one.

Finally a great product with great support

This is actually my second review of the product. You can see my one star review earlier. So what happened? NAD were very helpful - they replaced my dead T778 with a new refurbished model. Unfortunately that also turned out to have a problem with audio over HDMI failing after the unit was on for an hour or so... So they replaced it again and it's third time lucky. Everything seems to be working well and I have to say NAD's support and help was absolutely fantastic. The sound is very good. In my earlier review I said it sounded bad from streaming sources but now that is not the case and I think the original product may have had some issues that impacted this. So at last I have a great product. Obviously still some questions about reliability, but its a great product and NAD will be there to support you if you have problems or issues.

I had previously owned the classic NAD 3020 amp which still works after 40+ years. So when I saw the reviews for the T778 I thought it would be a good investment. What a mistake! The documentation is worthless. It took hours to figure out how to connect this thing to WiFi. Perhaps this has improved since I bought this 3 years ago. Sound quality is really disappointing when streaming from my iPhone. Dynamics are flat and it sounds like lots of detail is lost. This was one of the main reasons I bought it and I actually just ended up never listing to music because it sounded so bad. It gets really hot. The fan comes on and makes a lot of noise. And sometimes it doesn't come on and the unit gets baking hot. Finally it was making popping noises. Initially annoying but I tolerated it. But then it got worse and worse until it basically blew up making a huge popping sound that may have damaged the speaker. Now it is unusable. Probably the worst product I have ever bought. It's now an expensive piece of junk. Don't buy this product. You can buy a far more reliable better sounding amplifier at a fraction of the price.

DON'T BUY THIS THING!

2nd unit since 2021. First unit went out before the warranty ran out. Crutchfield was fantastic in getting the unit shipped back and a replacement sent. Had the replaced unit since 2022 and it went out again in 2024. Tried everything to troubleshoot and got really frustrated and lost faith on this product and I literally threw the unit in the trash and walked into the local electronic store and bought me a Yamaha AV receiver RX-V6A as I needed a replacement ASAP. I am extremely disappointed and heart broken, as I paid a lot of money for this unit, thinking it will outperform and outlast my Denon AV receiver, I had for 9 years and gave to my son and it still works.NEVER buying a NAD product ever again, but will always shop at Crutchfield as they provide excellent customer service and support.

Pros: Great look and features. Best looking AV receiver on the market with tons of functionality.

Cons: Too complicated to setup correctly, with limited information on how to. Not reliable at all.

Dead after 10 months. Junk

Crutchfield customer from QUINCY, MA on 5/29/2024

Verified employee review (What's this?)

My unit died after 10 months. The receiver was making some strange tones during the past few days then suddenly went into protection mode (red light on power button). A quick google search reveals this is common problem for the NAD T778. Beware, a lot of them seem to do this. This unit replaced a Meridian 561 preamp that was working reliably for over 25 years. I was only using the T778 as a preamp even that wasn't so great as it had some HDMI handshaking issues (see cons). I would avoid this unit and buy something else. I now have to go through the hassle of getting service on the unit. I will never buy another NAD product.

Pros: I like the looks of the receiver. DIRAC worked nicely and so did BluOS.

Cons: #1 It died. #2, HDMI handshaking didn't work well between a Windows 11 HTPC and 4K projector. Sometimes it detected the projector as a 720p display device and the only way out was to restart the receiver which then sometimes totally loses sync with PC and then I had to reboot the PC. I got tired of this so I directly connected the PC to the projector and all has been fine. What's the use of buying the T778 if I can't use it for video switching properly?

Not a fan or too much fan

Joshua from CHICAGO, IL on 5/6/2024

Loved it until the fan just turned on permanently. From the display: Temperatures between 24-26 Centigrade (about 76 Fahrenheit) Requested fan speed 1000 rpm Actual fan speed 4100 rpm The noise is infuriating and starts the moment it is plugged in even after sitting unplugged for months. Don't know if it an issue with the temperature reading or a problem with the fan itself. Saved up for a long time for my first true top notch av receiver. Regret this purchase thoroughly. Do not recommend.

Pros: In the beginning it was incredible.

Cons: The darn fan

An Outstanding AVR

Max from MAITLAND, FL on 10/31/2023

Verified employee review (What's this?)

So far, so good. I have this paired with Klipsch Heresy speakers and a Martin Logan sub in stereo mode. For Dolby Surround I have a Polk center channel with Klipsch rear surrounds. The stereo sound is simply sublime with this unit and a major upgrade from the basic Yamaha unit I had. The separation and clarity of all chords in the background exceeds what my already high expectations were. The screen is just as awesome as I hoped it would be; the feature that shows the albums cover that track is playing from is truly an increased immersive experience. Seeing the album covers not only connects the artist and the era but it is also a fun reminder of the nostalgia when album covers mattered. So far, I believe this feature only works with the Radio Paradise app or Apple Music so hopefully they can expand on that. Big shout out to Crutchfield tech support. "Root" was very helpful with my fusses as I was getting the unit set-up. Worked with me for hours on the phone and followed up in emails. The unit is not difficult to set up, but knowing the nuances and how to make certain things function can be tricky initially and tech support did work with me to get me over the finish line. The cost of the unit is certainly high and there are most likely AVR's out there that sound as good for half the price. But again, this NAD T778 offers an experience that, at this time, is unrivaled in my opinion. I took 6 years to make a decision on my upgrade and I feel satisfied wit

Pros: Sound Quality (Incredible and I haven't even set up the Dirac) Album covers displayed in certain apps Fit and Finish of the Unit The Remote Control is nice. Different from all other AVR's currently Crutchfield tech support

Cons: No bass/treble control on unit. Some manual adjustments on set-up that some other AVR's might do autumatically.

Pleased, but no Balanced inputs

Charles from RALEIGH, NC on 6/15/2023

Verified employee review (What's this?)

After 7 months of ownership, I am pleased with this unit. It is the most expensive AVR I have ever purchased. It replaced a Marantz SR7007 which was great, but a little outdated. I've read several negative reviews and paranoid at every glitch I have with my system. The sound compared to my old Marantz is outstanding and runs cooler. The touch screen is also great, and you don't need your tv or remote for setup. Very configurable and has a Phono input. Another good feature it uses expansion cards for optional future features. The sad thing is NAD haven't offered anything useful yet. I gave (4) stars because a $3k AVR should include balanced inputs. The other reason is you must connect a (supplied) dongle for wireless features which hangs behind the unit. This would have been a great opportunity to put this on an expansion card. Overall, I'm pleased with the performance and hope it will last as long as the Marantz I sold which is still working.

Pros: Great Features (Streaming & Dirac) Can customize each input Touch Screen Sound Enough power to run mostly any speaker

Cons: No Balance Inputs for price Use Dongle for wireless access Remote not very user friendly Quality Control is questionable No Useful Expansion boards available for this model yet. Expensive

Overpriced and not worth the money - look at other receivers

Liam from Morrisville, NC on 5/23/2023

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I really wanted to like this unit, but now that I'm on my second unit and have had nothing but problems, I would highly recommend you don't make the same mistake I did. Initially when I bought the T778 two years ago, I was very impressed with the depth and quality of sound this unit produced! Listening to vinyl and many of my favorite movies on Blu-Ray was almost like an entirely new experience. However, this honey moon phase ended rather quickly as my first unit failed within ten months and was replaced under warranty. It was the most bizarre thing I've ever experienced where I was watching a movie and then all of a sudden, the T778 powered down for no reason, without my doing. I was then unable to turn the unit back on and have it boot back up (there was nothing but a black screen and the firmware would never boot). Now that I've had my second unit for just over a year, the sound to the rear channel consistently cuts out after about 5-10 minutes after turning on the unit and I've tried nearly everything imaginable to troubleshoot the problem. After connecting my system to an ONKYO receiver, everything works just fine! So now, I'm outside the warranty for the unit and NAD Support says I need to ship this defective unit to an authorized service center to have it repaired and possibly spend hundreds. NAD support is also really sub-optimal - they have no phone number to speak with anyone and it seems they don't care about their customers. Not a great company to deal with.

Pros: Rich, immersive depth of sound (when the unit works as expected) Nice inteface that works well for BluOS Ability to upgrade hardware

Cons: -Many problems with updating firmware and BluOS software -Very difficult to configure Dirac -Configuration of anything with this unit is overly cumbersome and unnecessarily difficult (by far the most counter-intuitive setup of any receiver I've ever owned) -NAD Support is the worst I've ever dealt with in my life - no phone number to speak with a live support rep and their response times are lengthy. The remote control is not user friendly

Great Tidal Streamer

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I purchased the NAD t778 to do double duty as a home theater receiver and as a Tidal streamer. I set it up with 7 around, 2 in the ceiling and 1 subwoofer. I put a pair of Thiel 3.6 in the L/R for the Tidal and I upgraded to the full Dirac Live. I am very happy with the performance of this system for both music and movies. I have been a fan of class D since I heard the Spectron driving Avalon Ascents so many years ago; this continues in that tradition. Well recorded material is lively and completely grainless with good space and dynamics. It is not hard to go from my much more expensive all vacuum tube system to this. The Thiels have a very low impedance dip to 2.7 ohm and there is no evidence of strain. BluOS is easy to set up and functions seamlessly with Tidal. MQA is the real deal, too. Of course nothing makes a bad recording good, but a good recording with MQA on the t 778 stands it own against a CD on an expensive player.

Pros: Great for movies and music BluOS is a real value Runs cool in the AZ heat

Cons: Have not found any yet

After auditioning many AV receivers, I would say not a one should have a rating of 5/5. Each one has "bugs" that will eventually be worked out but the respective companies I suspect. However, this NAD T778 so far, has the least amount . HDMI switching has been great with minimal issues. Musicality it's very good. With video sources it's excellent. Movies sound particularly good with good separation. I was expecting to encounter annoyances but as I said, very very good. The front LCD display is really attractive but who is going to sit in front of the unit to play with it, so the remote works very well. It is a heavy remote

Pros: Good sound pretty easy setup nice speaker separation BluOs works well Dongle not as bad as advertised front panel LCD is nice touch

Cons: Not the most powerful Remote is heavy

great unit - with way too many things to learn

Louis from Elmont, NY on 10/31/2022

Verified employee review (What's this?)

The clarity of the dialogue and the soundtrack is great. That alone makes it worth every penny. Didn't give it 5 stars because there is a handshake problem between the Apple TV, the TV and the unit. Once I start the Apple TV it should automatically boot up the T 778 and my TV. It doesn't and could only imagine where to look to figure that one out. Also need to have 4K HDMI cables, which it was backwards compatible, not NAD's fault on that one.

Pros: clarity of dialogue and soundtrack, way more feature then I would ever use

Cons: way too many features that I know I will never use, need to be patient with their on screen menus to find what you are looking for.

Awesome. Coming from a denon avr s720w, this was a game changer. DIRAC lives up to the hype. Getting bluos to play with wifi was a little tricky, and the menus being finicky are totally true, but both problems were easily solved for me. Sound is great. It looks incredible. It runs cool. Only missing one star because of the network issues (I wanted to do a cable run anyways) and goofy menus.

Pros: Sounds incredible. Looks incredible. Runs cool. BluOS is cool once it's working.

Cons: Goofy menus. Connecting to network can be a challenge at first. Do yourself a favor and just run some cat cable if you can.

New Level of Audio

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I've waited some time before reviewing because I really wanted to live with the receiver in place. Bought the NAD T778 to upgrade to 5.2.4 layout. The sound stage is tight and precise. I've previously owned another large brand name receiver. It always sounded good, but the NAD just has more fidelity for music and kick for movie LFE. It effortlessly drives the speakers and has really brought the speaker system alive. I enjoy listening to stereo with all speakers driven except the center channel; the NAD T778 has a setting to turn off the center channel while listening to music. That way you are fully immersed in the music and still hear the left and right stereo separation. My speaker setup Klipsch R-625FA fronts w/ height built into them, RC-52 Center, RS-42 Surrounds & RP140SA rear height and (2) SVS PB-1000 subs. With other manufacturers as technology changes the receivers become obsolete within about five years, so another reason for looking at this receiver is MDC (Modular Design Construction) to future proof the unit as technology changes.

Pros:

Cons: Not really a con but the receiver doesn't have a built in radio receiver. With BluOS there isn't a need as you can stream nearly any radio station or streaming service. The only service I haven't found on BluOS is Pandora.

An investment worth saving for

Paul from Hanover, NH on 3/29/2022

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I bought this for the two zone capabilities. I am building a 5.1.2 main zone and a 2.0 second zone, in an adjacent room. The primary use is music streaming. But my secondary concern is streaming video content through an Apple TV 4K. Tertiary concern: minimal electronic components (one box solution rather than many separates). I love seeing cover art. I miss the good old days of holding a vinyl album cover in my hands while listening to music, but I don't have the space for hundreds of records, nor the time to keep the vinyl clean and maintain a good cartridge and get off my lazy back to change to the B-side. This large screen gives me that throwback I wanted without any inconvenience. The noise floor is incredibly low, for an AV receiver. No buzzing or humming from the speakers and high volumes can be achieved without driving your speakers to distortion. This is great for movies, with dynamic demands, or for playlists that go from mellow to bumping in one track. I'm also not a fan of complicated remotes, so I programmed the Apple TV remote to control volume and left the NAD remote in the box. I can control everything else from the touchscreen. Dirac Live room correction helped to also minimize the amount of stuff (room correction components) hanging on the walls so I could achieve the simple aesthetic I wanted while keeping some family photos and art where my wife wants it kept. I'm very satisfied, would recommend if you can stomach the inv

Pros: Great sound, versatile input capabilities, beautiful cover art display

Cons: Cost. I could have bought a cheap AV receiver for under $1K (with 5.1.2 in zone 1) and a 2-channel integrated amp for under $1K for zone 2 and still be $1200+ under this price. But you get what you pay for with this. all the power and room correction you could want for movies and all the streaming and cover art for music. Life is a balance of compromise, the only compromise here is price (in my opinion).

I was concerned that this was a class D amp. To be honest I probably have a bias to class A/B amps. However, this amp has dispelled and preconceived notion of class D being somehow inferior to A/B. The amp sounds amazing. The best I've heard. Very, very clean without being too bright or fatiguing. The bass is very strong and natural sounding. Love the touchscreen and being able to stream high res audio from my NAS. BluOS is great! Haven't run the Dirac Live setup yet. It's hard to imagine this thing sounding any better than it already does. But I'm anxious to try it out. The cost was a bit if a stretch for me but it's in a whole different league than the Denon, Onkyo, and Sony's I've owned in the past. If it fits you budget, you should give this one strong consideration.

Pros: Sound quality Beautiful - and sensible - touchscreen display Easy to configure the different inputs

Cons: Nothing significant

Next level in sound-Not reliable and no good options to repair

Anatoly from Bozeman, MT on 2/5/2022

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I've got this receiver as replacement of Marantz 6014 - that is about half of NAD price. I don't want to repeat others review - just want to say that the price difference is justified - and this is not including DIRAC room correction. The change in sound is unmistakable, it became much more accurate and detailed. The possible reason is that I'm using 4-ohm high-end speakers and I have feeling that the problem is Marantz (that formally supports 4 ohm speakers) was actually overloaded, especially at low levels. Regarding DIRAC room correction - it does great job and much better than Marantz software (that was doing decent job as well). For me, it is especially convenient to have multiple easy-to-switch calibrations for different listening arrangement. I was really surprised, but there is a clear difference if the sound is optimized just for me on an arm chair or me with wife on sofa. To be clear - this is only partial correction for poor room acoustic. But most of us have cannot rebuild house to improve sound. UPDATED 12/17/24: I purchased it 3 years ago, and at the time was very happy and gave 5-stars review. While I still stand by what I wrote at the time, there are some new developments that forced me to change my opinion: 1. The receiver has just died after 3 years. By itself, it is not a statistic. But looks like I'm not the only one having this issue. 2. So far, I was not able to find any repair options. Just a few repair centers across US. The one suggested asked not to send them unit - as the waiting line is more than a year. I'm still looking for repair center to ship it to. 3. Finally, it looks like there are more reliable options with same or better sound quality. Just listened to new Marantz (flagship version) and did not hear any significant difference in sound quality. Grunted, Marantz is quite more expensive and has a lot of bells and whistles that I don't need. But it is very reliable and can be repaired. Also, now it has DIRAC room correction option that used to be a big advantage of NAD.

Pros: UPDATED 12/17/24: Sound quality

Cons: UPDATED 12/17/24: Poor reliability, luck of repair centers.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Overall, I really like the receiver. I haven't experienced any problems in the month I've been using it so far. The receiver is not monstrous and fit well in the cabinet I needed to use it in. This brand wasn't on my radar when I was shopping for a replacement for a 10 year old Yamaha receiver I was using, but decided to try it out when I saw the lack of availability for so many other receivers I was considering. I would like it more if it were a $1000 cheaper, but I don't regret the purchase.

Pros: Color touch screen display. DIRAC calibration. Relative small size. No unnecessary and outdated inputs. Music streaming. Performance. Single row of speaker inputs along bottom at back.

Cons: Remote operation takes some getting used to. Dual sub outputs not discrete. Some minor noise through speakers when changing sources, though nothing startling. Full range DIRAC calibration requires $99 license. On-screen menu seems sparse in depth compared to others.

Simply Superb! Upgraded an aging Denon AVR-3311CI with the NAD T 778, now the foundation of a 7.1.4 home theater. The rear channels are externally amped since the NAD only amps up to 9 channels but preamps 11... The configuration also sports an SVS-3000 micro subwoofer and a 65" LG OLED display. Used the T 778's DIRAC to balance, particularly important since I have a mix of legacy B&W, Polk, and Cambridge Audio speakers. As with any complex and flexible solution, there was a learning curve, especially with respect to both enabling and balancing the externally amped rear channel, but once I backed-off some initial assumptions, it was a cakewalk. I'm hoping the T 778'a modular architecture will spare me the cost and complexity of a complete replacement as Dolby and DTS continue to evolve, moderating the upfront cost over time... Crutchfield support was characteristically outstanding and unparalleled in my experience. My Compliments!

Nice, balanced sound. I think what is called 'British'. Replaced Marantz 7701 + Balanced Audio VK-250 Class A amp. Also tried Emotiva XMC-2, much harsher and compressed sound. First thing I do I play CD with familiar music, direct, no corrections. If unit does well, it certainly will do much better with the room correction. NAD played well even with pretty reflective room. I enjoyed CD and didn't want to turn it off. My wife is not electronics expert but she mentioned from another room - 'hey, this one sounds nice'. Looks like using Class D amps has benefits as it is not necessary to convert digital to analog internally. Highly recommended.

Pros: Nice, balanced sound. I think what is called 'British'. Touch screen.

Cons: User manual could be better explaining what to do in various cases, like what to do with Amazon stick that outputs signal all the time and keeping unit at ARC input no matter what. Could use parametric EQ per channel.

Bottom Line: Fabulous!

Crutchfield customer from Berkeley, CA on 9/27/2021

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I'm rating by the "bottom line": Performance AFTER a fair amount of set up work. When I first set this up (without Dirac), I was amazed at the improvement out of the box. My old towers (Aperion, ported 150 watt woofer amps) got instantly better; cleaner mid & bass, even tho I had an excellent receiver before--80 watts RMS, all driven. I had come to assume we'd just reached more-or-less perfection in amplification. Nope! Phase correction is a whole new thing. After Dirac, the wide, deep, complex soundstage is a whole new experience. I added height speakers, and good ATMOS is to die for for. Remaining mid-bass bumps in my speakers got flattened to the point I could not hear them anymore. Amazing control and clarity in the bass. You MIGHT mistake it for less bass, but, for me, that's an illusion. I get better extension (below 30 hz). When there is bass, it's strong and tight. Just no "boom" that people mistake for good bass. Dirac setup was tricky, and it turned out I was doing a part of it wrong. (Truly wonderful technical help; took me through several rounds of debugging!) The problem was not degraded sound, but a surprising limit in loudness after calibration. In the end, not a big deal. Limits: I had to bear through software bugs (including totally freezing), and setup really takes time and attention. For me, the struggle over several months was well worth it. Hint: A narrow calibration gives you MUCH better sound stage, if it suits your setup. Do one wide, one n

Pros: Truly exceptional sound. Even good speakers are much improved. Soundstage for good sound sources, especially ATMOS, is just amazingly complex and entertaining. Kudos to the technical service folks at NAD.

Cons: Complex setup. Be zen: patient & careful. Contradictory Dirac instructions (partially from software changes not documented everywhere). I also had to live through buggy software for months, but it's almost all straightened out now.

Short and to the point. I've had my NAD T 778 for about two weeks and am absolutely thrilled with it's performance. Upgraded from a Marantz SR-7007 - a World of difference in sound. The sound quality and detail I hear from my Focal Aria 906 speakers are simply outstanding with the NAD T 778. Using the OSD output to TV screen - setup was really easy and straightforward. I did have an issue with Roku video output (especially in passive mode) BUT that was the fault of an incorrect 4K setting of the Roku's tv type selection. Playing music from my computer using BluOs sounds great and changing songs on my phone app has virtually no delay. Best home theater unit I've ever owned - worthy of 6 stars

Pros: More power output than my old Marantz SR 7007, great sound

Cons: The price :-)

This is an AMAZING AV-Amp. I'd give it 5 starts if was not so difficult to understand. However after living with it for a little while I think I've sorted through most of the tech and have everything working as it should. The only disappointment is the lack of a true OSD - so don't expect to see volume or any other settings show up on your TV, they don't. The OSD is only used for settings. On the up side, this means that all video is honestly passed through and images are much sharper now than when I was passing video through my old Denon AVR. There is a free app that does provide OSD-like info so I'm using that and not missing the TV display now. The Touch Screen is very nice, not something I see often as the 778 is in a cabinet, but it is great for setting changes and the album artwork, and meta-data are nicely displayed. Dirac Live, while a bit complex made a huge difference, more so than Denon AVR ever did. I'd strongly recommend, just be aware that you will need to spend some time with the set up and with understanding the Dirac Live software

Pros: Amazing sound, incredibly powerful, room never sounded this good. Dirac love works wonders

Cons: Settings are a bit complex , no true OSD

Almost Perfect!

Purchased T778 with high expectations after reading the multitude of positive reviews by admirers of the device. Then reality set it! Powerful A/V receiver loaded with features but setup turned out to be incredibly confusing and not intuitive for even the more technically experienced customer. Needed to reach back to Crutchfield customer support for help and currently still using trial and error method to figure out even the most basic configurations. in addition to a complicated setup with little guidance from NAD included in the box, I found the remote control to be equally difficult and worthless in navigating through the complicated mapping required to reach my desired settings. Also not a fan of needing to use a dongle for BLUOS which is extremely out of place at this price point. ON the other side, T778 touch screen is easy to use and provides a great view of the source and album covers when playing music. found DIRAC live equally confusing and complicated to set up and not made for the average user. I still recommend this divide but warn buyer to go into this marriage with your eyes open and prepare for a difficult setup.

Pros: Powerful unit with attractive touch screen

Cons: extremely difficult setup, complicated remote, and uses a clunky dongle to connect BlueOS. Dirac sound correction adds to the difficulty of setup

Amazing AV amplifier

This is not a simple AV system to set up, however the rewards are so worthwhile. On setup, you need to connect to your Wifi via BlueOS, update BlueOS, update main system firmware, run DIRAC room acoustics optimization from a computer, tweak response curves and then you have the most amazing sounding and flexible AV system. Sound stage and clarity for both music and HT are significant improvements to the big box names. It also allows you to assign presets (speaker configurations, sound processing) for multiple scenarios (HT, music, ATV4,...). You are limited to the number of HDMI ports but the amount works for me. I also am running two zones with the primary being a 5.1 set up, but you can do more if your would like. Front panel display is novel, allows for touch panel (or remote) control, and displays music album covers, volume meters, or can be turned off. I also find BlueOS to be an excellent streaming app with emphasis on high fidelity sources. Yes, I am betting that NAD will offer upgrade MDC modules for HDMI 2.1 once the chip issues are resolved. Online reviews are mixed but the unit I received recently from Crutchfield seems to be free of bugs stated by others, plus I received the best-in-class support as part of the purchasing process.

NAD T778: Lots to Like

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I like the onscreen setup/options menu with its clean, logical design. Clarity of movie dialogue is quite appreciated, too. Crutchfield bills the NAD T778 as a "Home Theater Receiver," but the box, in large lettering, says "AV Surround Amplifier." This clears up my confusion about the missing FM tuner. Older audio equipment consumers think of receivers as "receiving" AM and/or FM radio signals. However, I can always add an outboard tuner to correct this. Looking forward to tweaking my speakers with the sophisticated Dirac Live software, too. My new toy has more to play with!

Pros: Onscreen menu & vocal clarity.

I really wanted to like this, I really wanted to believe that the negative reviews on here were just a small percentage of people venting on isolated bad experiences. I wanted to believe that this was a solid reliable piece of gear with great sound and great looks. Well, I'm sad to report that the NAD T778 is the former and not the latter. After having it for just 3 days it was riddled with issues. First off the screen would randomly boot up and not boot up. I'd often have to restart the receiver to get the display to work. Then there is Dirac which would not find the receiver if I had it hard wired to the internet so I had to do it wirelessly, but the Dirac program would not even get past the initial volume equalization before giving me a recurring error message, so that didn't work. Then the HDMI input module began to fail one by one. As I was watching Netflix on my Roku the receiver lost the signal, and then the input for my blu ray player stopped working and then the EArc output for the tv would only display green. I did a factory refresh but that only fixed it for a few minutes. Suffice it to say that the modular design this offers needs more work, a lot more work. This made me sour on NAD and the new direction they are going in with the modular design. I think it's a great idea but poorly implemented. I've seen modular designs in the past on old B&K gear and they eventually abandoned it, I guess the same will happen to this. Don't buy this, look at something else.

Worth The Money and Small Issues

Crutchfield customer from Ashburn, VA on 12/28/2020

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I returned my Denon X8500 for this for a couple of reasons: - Denon was way more than I needed, i.e. amplified channels and inputs (analog, HDMI, etc.) - Reviewers were saying the T778 has some of the best sound they had heard from an AVR for 2 channel music listening - Cost, i.e. 1K less - Looks great I had them both for an evening and used the same speakers and volume level (used meter to check), with 2 channel music. In my opinion, the T778 sounded better, it had a wider sound stage and better bass. This was before I setup Dirac live and with Audyssey turned off on the Denon. I tried to make the Denon sound as good, but I could not. Using the equalizer, turning Audyssey on and off, etc. The T778 does have some small issues, namely a popping sound when it first turns on. I don't experience the popping when switching inputs like others have reported. I contacted their support and they are aware and working on a solution. The remote feels super cheap, but I use Harmony so, I don't care. Setting it up is not as straight forward as the Denon, but I think it's worth it in the end. Dirac live seemed to make the bass better.

For starters this is the best sounding (non-separate) I've ever heard. Performs clean accurate sound beautifully. However, it is far from perfect as the initial set up is quite a pain and this is coming from an 18 year tech. Dirac at times is glitchy and non responsive. The front panel is as nice as one can find in a high end piece in 2020 but does leave some info to be desired. Why not display the current surround mode? As with any device there are pros and cons, the flat out performance of this unit outweighs any negatives so if it's on your radar, pull the trigger, you won't regret.

Coming from several different avrs (H/K, Sony, Integra, Marantz and Pioneer Elite) I can say for sure the hype around NAD is real. This is by far the best sounding avr I have owned. It executes cinema soundtracks really well and makes speakers disappear. Sound wise, I have no complaints. However, for a flagship avr, it lacks a few things. The level of control and fine tuning is lacking, front display doesn't show channel configuration but instead only displays text noting the number of channels detected from source. it has plenty of real estate to show gfx/icons for things like: DD, DTS, THX, 4k, HD, speakers, etc. Hopefully, future firmware update would include these features.

Pros: - Looks modern - Sounds amazing - Lots of power in a small form factor

Cons: - Front display shows details in text only that are difficult to read from listening position - No graphical representation of details in the front display - No Dirac bass management

I returned this unit due to power save feature causing audio issues with menus used in user interfaces like Apple TV and Nintendo Switch. For example, on Apple TV if you pause for a few seconds on home screen menu icon and then move again, the audio engine has to wake up and you don't hear the beep the same for the first move to icon as the next one. I filed support request with NAD and they said they do not intend to fix the issue. In other cases it could cause a pop instead. For $3000 I expect more.

Man I love this thing. It replaced an old Yammy and it sounds like I got brand new speakers. This is one awesome piece of equipment. Neutral, powerful, detailed sound. Very musical. Cleared up the muddy dialogue issue I had with the Yammy. This might be the best thing I ever bought. Expensive but worth it for me. I like the convenience of a single box solution that sounds frickin' awesome with the possibility for easy upgrades in the future. Less complexity = less things to go wrong. The only fly in the ointment is it still isn't Roon certified. NAD says it's been submitted for certification but I still can't enable it in Roon.

Honest Review

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This is an excellent AV Receiver, the sound quality is exceptional. If you are at this price point for an AV Receiver, then you shouldn't pass this one up. Even if it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, that money is used instead on the things that are actually important.

Pros: Dirac Live sets this apart from other AV Receivers at this price point. Being a class D amplifier section it runs extremely efficient. Build quality is what an Audiophile expects. Modular design allows for future upgrades.

Cons: In order to take advantage of setting up 7.2.4 configuration you have to run an external amplifier for the height 2 section. It would have been nice had the front main stage of the amplifier been assignable so you can just have a really nice amplifier for your front speakers. Also it does have two subwoofer outputs, it would have been nice if they were not summed but individual instead.

Hearing my speakers for the first time.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

For the first time I'm really hearing my speakers! The NAD T 778 is the reason, I'm very happy. I've had a 7.1 array of B&W and KEF speakers driven by a Pioneer Elite AV Receiver for 15 years. I knew it was excellent for the time but something always seemed missing. I just wasn't getting the sound quality and depth those speakers ought to have provided. Wow! the NAD T778 is a night and day difference. Setup was very easy and I love the touchscreen. One wrinkle is that the remote doesn't use the select or back keys for the on screen menus. Not a good choice, out of habit I often pressed the wrong key which was frustrating. But everything else about this receiver makes it worthy of 5 stars. The Dirac-Live software that comes with the NAD is touted as the best available. I'm convinced! After downloading it to my computer it took about an hour to complete for a 7.1 system but it was easy to use with great results. I'll point out that the instructions and videos available for Dirac are a little confusing for someone not fully familiar with this depth of audio balancing but I got there and the program worked flawlessly. I do wish there was a little more easily available guidance for a novice about how to adjust target curves relative to measured values but I certainly can't argue with the unadjusted results. Crutchfield's ordering and shipping process is phenomenal. Click, click, click and two days later it was on my doorstep in perfect condition. Unbelievably excellent service.

This unit replaced a Marantz AV7703 and MM7705 combination and I couldn't be more pleased. I'm a big fan of Bruno Putzeys and the inclusion of the 9 channels of Hypex amplication has resulted, to my ears, in a much more coherent and powerful sound. The included DIRAC live facility is truly excellent and much more comprehensive than the Audyssey of the Marantz, being really simple to set up and tune. I'd buy again just for that feature alone. I really like that the front panel display can time out and the unit can disappear in my light controlled room, making it perfect for distraction-free viewing. The included Roon end-point (although not currently certified) has performed flawlessly. I've experience none of the quality control issues referred to in some other reviews and assume that NAD have now got there act together in that regard

Pros: Sound Quality. Dirac Live. Roon Endpoint

Cons: Gloss black remote auto illumination times out too quickly ( but maybe there is a setting for that!)

Outstanding high-current audio performance, ease-of-use

Outstanding audio performance and excellent ease-of-use has been our experience with the NAD T778. The T778 drives all of our KEF R-series speakers effortlessly, especially at low listening volumes. It's a great match with KEF speakers where impedance to drive some frequencies can get down to 3.2 ohms. We were drawn to the T778 because all 9 amplifier channels are driven with more than ample high-current power into this low speaker impedance, simultaneously and equally. Competitive receivers do not. The screen display on the front of the T778 makes initial setup and configuration easier because you can see what you are doing. The display tells you what type of audio signal is being received and sent, your speaker setup, and even details about the video signal being passed through the receiver. The free version of Dirac Live LE that NAD provides does not generate a full-frequency room correction for the speakers, so we set up and used the full version of Dirac Live 3 with no issues. We found easy-to-use guides with step-by-step instructions on the AVS Forum in the Official Dirac Live thread here: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/the-official-dirac-live-thread.3137722/ It was actually fun to use! We purchased all new Certified Premium High Speed HDMI cables with 28 awg wire to guarantee that the full 18 Gbps bandwidth is delivered to and from the T788 with each connected device. This is critical for viewing Dolby Vision video as well as for many g

Pros: High-current amplifier, designed to handle 4 ohm speaker impedance on all 9 channels simultaneously with equal power, excellent Dirac Live room correction, touch screen display, outstanding multichannel sonic impact for video, smooth and detailed audio for music

Pretty bad experience so far. With the price point of this receiver, you'd think they'd nail it... but they don't. It sounds great, but the set up instructions are vague at best, it doesn't seem to work with Amazon Echo at all, and the BluOS app is complete and utter junk. I thought Yamaha MusicCast was bad, this seems to be made by the same company, but somehow worse. It connects maybe when it feels like it, and troubleshooting is about as painful as it gets. HIGHLY likely that I'll be returning this, which is extremely disappointing. I can only fathom that all the great Youtube reviewers were paid to love this or only told to listen to the audio output. Dirac Live is a real pain to set up, but it does sound good. However there are loads of receivers that sound good but won't leave you frustrated for hours because NAD doesn't know the first thing about user experience. Well... not true, they really know how to create a poor user experience.

I am very happy with the T778. I love the sound quality & ease of use. I did install the latest firmware update. Super simple to do using the BluOS app through my phone. I have not had any issues in my system. It drives 4 & 8 ohm speakers (5.1) with major power & there is no distortion. The Dirac Live Full version is worth the money to completely fine-tune the room correction. It is on par with Anthem ARC if not better(I used Anthem ARC with my old MRX700). The UI is more modern & very powerful. Plus, you can load a new custom Dirac profile over Wifi or network. No cables required & it only takes a few seconds. Spotify streaming is flawless. SACD's sound perfect. This is definitely the best receiver I have ever heard. The next step would have been separates, but would have more than doubled the price & size of my system. For the price & features, this is the best single solution available that I could find.

Pros: Latest audio & video format support, powerful clean & natural sound, very user friendly, compact, efficient, looks awesome, well thought out design, made for music, touch screen is nice & easy to navigate

Cons: Parallel Subwoofer outputs

TLDR: Never worked, waiting for replacement. Will revise rating if new unit works. Great support. Bad outcome. Unboxed the unit, plugged in power cable and ethernet cable, turned it on. "Error Amplifier Too Hot. Please Wait." Called Crutchfield, they said: send it back. I said: OK, want me to call NAD? They said "sure, can't hurt." Gave me the number. Gave me the code to get straight to support. (Nice job folks!) Called NAD, they said: Do this. I did this. They said: Do that. I did that. They said: Install the Android app. I installed the android app. They said: see if the unit can be found in the app. It could not. I said: the ethernet lights come on if I turn the unit on. They said: OK, see if you can find it in the app. I could. They said: update the firmware. I did. They said plug in a cable to the TV. I did. Same error. They said: Is there anything on the TV? No. They said, is the light on the power button red or blue. Red. They said, it's in protect mode. They said: There's no hard reset. They said: contact Crutchfield to return. Here's the thing. The Dirac room correction software gets great reviews but I'm having a hard time finding a reliable piece of gear that actually has it. :) I'm waiting for another unit I suppose, even though the replacement is back ordered. Here's hoping that NAD gets the quality control sorted on this unit. At the time of this review, the only other review states: "stopped working, waiting for replacement."
